It has been nearly SIX YEARS since Mahoyo came out -- or rather, the first of its planned three parts. We still don't have a complete English fan translation #RIP #nasujapaneseishardmode, and we still don't have any word on the second game. Here: have a listen. The delightful theme song.

I can't speak for DBZ, having never seen any of Dragon Ball or its related properties, but I actually had similar thoughts regarding Fushigi Yuugi a few weeks ago. I briefly flirted with the idea of re-watching the entire thing, and only tabled it because a) the number of times things were cutting in line ahead of other things in my private life was getting to be absurd this autumn, and b) as much as I adore / may have adored the series way back when, I still remember that the villains really suck compared with the heroes and that this means I'm committing to watching a(n at best) "flawed masterpiece". But I still considered it, and I might resume watching it this coming year, who knows. (I got five or so episodes in before I put it down. The heroes were on their way to meet Tenshouin.)

I'm delighted to say that most of my favorite series have held up remarkably well. Haruhi, Hikaru no Go, and Minami-ke all remain solid 10 out of 10s, to name three of the most recently revisited of my favorites. I'm planning to re-watch Kanon 2006 with Yuki soon, and I think that one will be a delight as well.

Kadowaki Mai (Ilya) sings "Pretty Fly For a White Guy". This is apparently a thing, as is the 12-track CD from which it comes.

The other remixes I sampled ("Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Anarchy in the UK") weren't anywhere near as good as Kadowaki Mai's performance. They're too remixed -- like, genre-swapping levels of remix. But the Kadowaki Mai one exists to be enjoyed and "O_o" 'd at.

A Japanese company took Sazae-san ...

... and parsed it through the Shinkai Makoto filter to give us this:

BORKED

A 30-second CM that animates Sazae and her future husband when they were in high school.

Holy fucking shit I would be interested in watching this.

Wait, Sazae-san is female?

I always thought Sazae referred to that little kid...

Replying to your Kajiura Yuki false alarm death post here because a) she's not really dead and b) I don't think anyone will be much interested in the conversation we're about to begin except for those of us here.

I knew it was a long shot, but I was curious to see if I could find Kalafina singing Christmas songs. ¬_¬; While I didn't find that, this (above) was a pleasant discovery.

Doing some investigating on my own, it appears that she's leaving her current talent agency, a group called Space Craft, and it doesn't sound like she's taking Kalafina with her. Reportedly Kajiura is exploring the legal morass of what rights she has to the music she composed while with Space Craft.

Fans seem split over whether they think Kalafina will be okay without Kajiura or whether Kajiura was Kalafina. I'm more inclined towards the latter -- the ladies have lovely singing voices, but Kalafina was definitely Kajiura Yuki's outlet for writing Japanese lyrical songs and it seems to me that, without her vision and guidance, the band will cease to effectively "be" Kalafina anymore.

Fans are also discussing whether Kalafina's three singers wish to leave Space Craft now too, now that Kajiura Yuki has left, or whether they wish to or even have to remain behind. Which is to say -- fans are asking the question, "Can Kalafina regroup outside of Space Craft?" Can Kajiura Yuki helm the three ladies once more under the same name? If not the same name, under a new name?

Yuki and I rewatched Kanon together, Kyoto Animation's 2006 adaptation of Key's debut visual novel. We finished it yesterday, and I am happy to report that it holds up very well. It is a surprisingly well-written first work. The characters are lovely. The mystery-driven plot is exhilarating. The story is rich with themes and other ideas or messages the writers wish to explore; these include family, miracles, and coping mechanisms. The story has no shortage of symbols, with Ayu's red hairband and the certain lost something leading the way. The music is good, with several great songs. The animation is beautiful and could still go shoulder-to-shoulder with today's anime.

It's just a very good anime!

Spoiler: show
SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE STORY

Spoiler: show
BORKED

The scene of Ayu falling from the tree is as heart-wrenching and unforgettable today as it was eleven years ago. The combination of Key (in the story writing) and Kyoto Animation (in the actual animation) does a fantastic job of building up to this moment. Everything about the Child Yuuichi-Child Ayu flashbacks is darling, and when they arrive at the tree and start talking about Ayu's special school in the forest it's all so pure and innocent. While the true nature of Ayu's tragedy is hidden in plain sight from the very first episode, first-time viewers by the truckload don't see "it" coming until it happens --

And as Ayu falls from the tree, KyoAni does such a marvelous job of capturing the horror of the moment.

And as she lays there on the ground, dying, her little voice trembling ...

And they cut to the pool of blood, so massive it's reached her hands ...

And then, what really got Yuki and I this time on the re-view, and a line that neither of us had remembered --

"If I can't move ... we can't play. "

I'VE GOT TEARS BATHING MY CHEEKS MY RIGHT NOW AS I WRITE THIS. ^^;;

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kanon 2006 may not be perfect. Most viewers find fault with some thing or another, even if not all viewers will agree on what those problems are. But of the three Key works I have seen to date -- Kanon, Air, and Clannad -- I would say that Kanon is by far Key's strongest outing. Clannad has the biggest of the "great scenes" in Key history, quite possibly in animated history, but it's a long and tiresome slog to get there. Air is wonky. But Kanon is a pure delight. It's not just good averaged out across its entire length, as would be Clannad -- it's good most each and every episode.

If you haven't watched Kanon 2006 in years, consider giving it a reviewing, as we did. I don't think you'll regret it. And if you haven't seen it before, consider giving it a shot. Before there was ufotable and their love of all things Type-Moon, there was Kyoto Animation and their love of all things Key. Kanon 2006 is a clear labor of love, from start to finish, made possible by the critical acclaim the studio received for Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu and all the money that it generated.

I read the second-to-last chapter and realized this somehow passed us all by.

Many, many story arcs have concluded in the past 2 years. Just listing them off would be spoilers!

It seems, only One Piece remains undiscovered.

Holy moly I actually watched a show! It feels like forever since I watched a full anime. I think I'll try just watching shows after a season so I can marathon them.

Inuyashiki
This was a pretty interesting show. The whimsical nature of the teenager made it kind of unpredictable on what he was going to do next. Admittedly once you saw the pattern, that went away pretty quickly. Old man was a cool main character. He wasn't heroic or anything, but he was just a relatively shy old man. "I need help!" *camera closes in on a window for him to bust through* *doorbell rings* "Hello? Is everything okay?" Now for negatives! The show got a little ridiculous at times. The way the two main characters became the way they are was umm....dumb to say the least. The references were pretty heavy-handed. Seems a bit unprofessional to just constantly name titles. On the same note, it got stupidly opinionated. We had one episode dedicated to bashing a certain internet site. Also...UGLY CRYING FACES! The complaints are somewhat small, but still hamper the experience a bit. I enjoyed the show overall. I'd say it's worth an 8, and it was nice blazing through a show again.

I'm also going to give Houseki no Kuni and Blend S a shot.

Jojo Part V is coming.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's announced for Spring and already under development. This is exciting, as it (along with Part VIII: Jojolion) are the only two parts I haven't read/been spoiled for ahead of time. For Jojolion I read most of what was out back in 2015 or so, so it's been a while. But I've read nothing of Part V.

The long silence on Part V is doubtless due to:
  • deciding whether they would/could push on through Part VI or not
  • securing the funds necessary to make Part VI a possibility
  • working quietly on Part V (with the remaining funds available to them from Parts III and IV, as well as with any new funds secured for Parts V and VI)
I imagine that when we get our first episode for Part V, Part VI will enter production (if it hasn't already by that time).

Interesting that it's officially being subtitled as "Golden Wind" rather than as "Vento Aureo". Obviously both mean the same thing, and both serve as translations of the Japanese title, 黄金の風. But I've only ever heard fans refer to it as Vento Aureo before. I wonder if the decision was made to bring Part V into step with all of the other parts (which are all referred to in English by their English subtitles -- Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency, Stardust Crusaders, Diamond is Unbreakable, Steel Ball Run ...) or if it was an oversight by the Japanese committee, unaware that English fans have all been referring to it in Italian all this time. *shrug* Can you shed some light on this for us, Doppel?

It was Araki's original English name. I couldn't find any origin online, but I remembered the All-Star Battle trailer featured every English/Japanese name and sure enough it's listed there as "Vento Aureo".

Don't watch that trailer though. Lotso' Huggin Spoilers. :p

It turns out YU-NO is getting a serious anime adaption soon! It had a hentai adaption decades ago that was not very good, but this is a 2 season anime, so there is a force of budget behind it.

YU-NO is very influential, which was only part of the reason I played the original game. It's close to the Starship Troopers of visual novels in primacy. KID's writers grew up on this, and since KID disseminated into things like 5pb you can say it's Steins;Gate's ancestor.

The voice cast =SHOULD= be the same as the original, since when it came out most of those thespians were mere rookies.

I wonder when this is coming out? It's just concept art at this point...

As someone who's not familiar with YU-NO, can you share more with us? Not plot spoilers, per se, but like ...
  • setting and premise
  • legacy / impact; why you think it's so influential
  • how well known it is today by your average anime fan, in your estimation
  • your personal thoughts on it, if you've played it before

It's set by a small town by the sea, about a 3 hour drive from a decent sized city.

The basic premise I guess...there's a kid named Arima Takuya, whose father, an archeology professor, disappears one day. Everyone assumes he died. He lives with his father's second wife who is only about 6 years older than Takuya.

At some point he learns his father was researching parallel worlds, and after a series of events gets stuck in a closed time loop that actually bisects (and interacts with) multiple timelines.

YU-NO, along with Kichikuou Rance and toward the end of the decade, were the three visual novels that transitioned the medium away from "dating sim/eroge" into a legitimate type of game.

Rance blended comedy, RPG action with the hentai fun. Kanon gave emotional depth and heavy character development. YU-NO gave the high brow, complex narrative that integrated puzzles and mystery. It didn't have the character development of Kanon, but it had some. It didn't have the comedy (or emotional moments) of Rance, but it was interactive.

And like Breath of the Wild, nobody really tells you what to do: you do what you do, and decide to progress how you wish.

The alternate dimension framework as presented in YU-NO is unique, but like with DOOM, you can see how it arose organically: the game engine probably came first, and the narrative was built around it.

Completely obscure. It had an immensely complex, non-linear plot (like Muv-Luv Alternative but even worse) and the anime was bad/confusing and mostly porn. When the composer died 8 years ago or so, very few people even remembered who he was.

Even when Amaterasu/Ixrec translated the VN, not many people finished it. BBB gave up. There was an insanely hard puzzle toward the end of the prologue that stumped me for weeks, and I had to use a guide. Without a guide, it would take months to complete just poking around on your own (it too me 1 month with a guide).

Oh yeah I forgot to mention. The first 50% of the game is the "prologue". You practically have to beat the game to actually unlock the real deal.

We had a topic on it 7 years ago, and you were a part of it! Spoilers about but here is my review:

It feels like one step further than Ever17 in this regard. The characters were also entertaining, with a spread of quality. That's more or less what I got with G-Senjou and Sharin, with basically the same setting.

Worth playing? Yes if you are a visual novel middle-weight. YU-NO is too frustration to be an intro title, but it'll be too predictable for a VN vet. So if you the reader are someone with a few VNs under your belt, but not a ton, this VN would be ripe for you to try.
That is a pretty fair assessment I agree with today. The gameplay absolutely holds up, nothing is like it today unless you do a lot of emergent gameplay, but only if you have lots of patience. The story might have been super impressive in 1997, but some of its twist have become staple cliches of the genres it touches on.

Edit: I forgot to mention that my nickname for Kuno originated from this novel. I call him Kun-kun.

Well, this was certainly out of nowhere. It feels like we're in humanity's twilight, isolated from information that we are.

Apparently, Fukumoto sponsored a Kaiji spin-off manga called Chuukan Kanriroku Tonegawa, focusing on Tonegawa and his rise and fall at Teiai. It's been produced for 3 years now. And wouldn't you know it, it's getting an anime this Fall.

Noice.

A friend was telling me something about a "continuation" to Akagi recently. I asked him if he meant Ten, but he insisted that it was not Ten. I have to wonder, if it's not Akagi, it's not Ten, and it's not Kaiji's mahjong arc, is there some other thing Fukumoto has written in the last ten years that my friend may be confusing for an Akagi continuation? Or is there in fact an Akagi continuation not called Ten? (Perhaps something that fills the interlude between Washizu's defeat and Ten's arrival on the scene.)

As for a Tonegawa spin-off manga ... Spin-offs can be wildly hit or miss in any medium, but I feel like otaku media has been disproportionately kind to us. For every disappointment that is a Nagato Yuki-chan, we get two or more Carnival Phantasms. The most famous "spin-off" of all, being a canon prequel, would have to be Gen's penning of Fate/Zero in place of series creators Nasu and Takeuchi.

So I'd like to go into the Tonegawa spin-off optimistic. But ... for some reason, I just can't. Tonegawa is a character I'd certainly enjoy seeing more of in the future, but only in small doses. I'd like to maybe know his backstory a tiny bit and that's really it. I'm not interested in a three-year-long manga series with Tonegawa as the star. He's not a nice man, and fan revisionism that casts him as such would be unpalatable while fan faithfulness that depicts him for the terrible person he is would make it a very hard read.

We'll see. If a Tonegawa spin-off can get an anime, then I have faith that this could motivate Madhouse (or, sigh, someone else ) to work with Fukumoto to bring Kaiji S3 (and possibly a later S4) to fruition.

There was an Akagi spin-off, Washizu - Enma no Touhai! It was very weird, and like the Tonegawa manga focuses on Washizu building his empire. But unlike like Tonegawa one, which I assume is more grounded, we're treated to the crazy face nutty Washizu like he's one of the world leaders in Mudazumo.
As for a continuation, I've heard something about a "trilogy". I don't know what that is about. We've already seen Old Akagi, and Akagi the manga has ended. What more is there?

That's what it was! The Washizu spin-off.

No idea on an Akagi trilogy, but I bet those who speak of one are including the Washizu spin-off in that. Washizu = prequels, Akagi = originals, Ten = sequels, to make the Star Wars comparison.

Apparently, Goblin Slayer is getting an anime! For those who don't know (I might have talked about it before), it's unique in that it's a fantasy-medieval story that isn't an isekai, and has a pretty interesting premise.

The focus is this guy called Goblin Slayer, a psycho "adventurer" who, despite his high rank, is heckbent only on killing weak goblins. He doesn't "adventure" for fame or fortune, but is motivated both by revenge and out of concern for others.

As adventurers get stronger, they stop focusing on weaker prey and move on toward stronger foes. But the weak monsters like goblins don't actually stop propagating, and villages are raided and destroyed by them. Adventurers who grow strong move on, while rookies are often wiped out by underestimating goblin strength.

The setting appears to be a JRPG or TRPG, where characters have stylized looks and conventions. But in a commentary on JRPGs, the world actually operates similar to ours, where the goblins fight dirty. In response to this, Goblin Slayer also plays dirty, using explosives, traps, and improvisation to wipe out goblin nests. He's an exterminator, and he exterminates with extreme prejudice.

Later in the story, we learn the great irony: at the highest levels of politics in the story, there's a Demon Army lead by a Demon King that the adventurers are battling - and losing - against, because the army has an inexhaustible supply of demons. It turns out, all the monsters evolve from lesser monsters, and the high ranking demons all started out as goblins. So, by moving on away from goblins, the adventurers of the world were in fact dooming themselves, and Goblin Slayer, in his single-minded holocaust against goblin kind, is indirectly saving the world by killing the demons in their larval form.

While the story isn't super deep, it is A-ranked material that doesn't get old. It's basically a SOL where Goblin Slayer's daily routine is hunting for goblins in old churches, sewers, fields and caves. Look forward to the anime, it'll certainly be entertaining!

Been looking into freelancing work recently. Haven't really made any headway yet. Most people want journalists, not op-eds, and I haven't found anything on the journalistic side that would compel me to do investigative research.

But I did find this bishounen VN writing position on Reddit. I mean, they don't call it that, but that's totally what it is. If you look on the Apple App Store, you'll find dozens of these games: VNs optimized for smartphones which have a female protagonist navigate through a harem of bishies usually four men in number.

I was considering doing this one until I realized: why should I come up with the entire plot idea for a VN only to sell it to someone else for $100? I mean ... I'm doing most of the heavy lifting here. It is, after all, a VN. If you wanted me to come up with one specific character route, fine, but ... that's not what you've asked for at all. You've asked me to come up with the overall story, the setting, the rules of the universe, and the various routes attached to each of the bishies. You've even asked me to specify what the route hurdles will be. So ... you're ... basically asking me to write Katawa Shoujo for only $100? While you then make all the money off of the downloads on the App Store? ... Why don't I ... just write my own VN, find an artist whom I can offer an equal share of the profits, and we (auteur & artiste) self-publish?

It's much, much, much harder to solicit an artist than it is to get a writer, programmer, or even a composer. I know from personal experience when I was trying to assemble a team for Jinsei wa Hikikomogomo! (which I still want to write, by the way!) - getting a good artist is darn near impossible because:

1. Most artists who are within your realm of access are only interested in easy fanarts/subscribers
2. They're pretty limited in skills.
3. If they're hiring, they're going to be picky about work and can't be swayed my money alone, they have to share your vision.
4. The money is outrageous (for amateur talent). Professional talent is paid peanuts but you don't have access to them!

If you're an artist looking for any other position, you are in the driver's seat for negotiations, especially if you are good.

$100 for a full visual novel is definitely not enough though. That's how much I make at a minimum-wage job for one hour of work, and you're looking at hundreds of hours minimum to write that baby.

One hour? You mean one day? $12/hr times 8 hrs will net you $96, but I can't imagine a location in the United States paying a "minimum" wage of $100/hr ...

I don't think the rate of pay is inconsiderate hours-wise. They only want the storyboard. They're not asking for every single sentence of every single paragraph yet. They just want you to provide a setting, characters, rules of the universe, overarching story, and 4+ route stories with 2-3 conflicts per route. I think that's the sort of thing one could come up with within eight non-stop hours of brainstorming. (Whether what one comes up with is sales-worthy or not, that's an entirely different issue.)

The problem is that you're asking the "writer" to be the concept creator but then only paying him a writer's wages. If I'm the one coming up with the idea of seven mages summoning seven historical or legendary figures who wage battle over a cup that will grant its bearer any one wish, then I'm going to be the one making the game, not selling it to Type-Moon for $100. In many other fields of work, ideas are as cheap as water and what matters most is implementation. But fiction writing is one of the very, very few fields I can think of where the idea is as important as the execution itself. No one wants to read a great idea hidden behind bad execution (see: Star Wars prequels), but no one wants to read a horrible idea dressed up in the very best execution either.

Err yeah, I was disoriented there for some reason;

...

Some trivia about Goblin Slayer: many of the designs are actually pulled from other fantasy stories, and sometimes the personalities are too. This is more apparent with the warriors, but I've heard testimony that most of the female cast are actually based on The Idolm@ster designs. Which is a bit chilling considering the title.

In GS proper, we have:

Spoiler: show

Spearman - Cu Chulainn (similar personality)
Heavy Warrior - Guts
Dwarf Shaman - Isaac Netero
Guild Girl - Chihiro Senkawa
Barbarian - Arnold Schwarzenegger
Boy Wizard - Harry Potter

In Year One,

Spoiler: show

Burglar - Bilbo Baggins
Brutal Swordsman - Rance
Rhea Thief - Sill Plain?
??? - Iskander (party member of Rance)

Just bingewatched 2012's Sakamichi no Apollon

I think where I am in terms of emotions right now, this really struck a chord with me (no pun intended)

The music was fantastic, the animation was really pleasant to look at, and I think all of the plot points were paced in a way that really highlighted the emotional impact, even if it glossed over some details

as far as bullshit romance anime misunderstandings go, this was really not that frustrating to watch? plus all the scenes where they played music were just so good oh wow

overall, the show was just constructed in such a way that when something stupid was going on, it wasn't stupid for too long, but when something really feels-y happened, you felt how feels-y it was. It was just a ride that covered most of its weaknesses for me

9.5/10
