My turn to chime in.
The Hobbit was spectacular and I disagree with all of you. I went in expecting to be entirely disappointed, and while it's very clearly in a completely separate tier of it's own from the Lord of the Rings movies, it was a fantastic movie nonetheless. Yes, I will agree, it was much longer than it needed to be, but it was definitely "an unexpected journey". I loved the adventure, the characters were endearing, and the story, while slow, managed to pull off the correct feeling for the first movie in a trilogy and left me satisfied. Also, I got chills when this song played:

You also (apparently) went into the film after having read the fears and criticisms posted here or else come across similar elsewhere. Perhaps that helped.

The song VGM posted sounds like it came out of the Rankin/Bass film. I had to confirm that it wasn't from it.

I just reread the Hobbit, btw. I dislike the movie even more, being able to now more accurately compare it with the source material. They made it into an action movie, and that just disgusts me.

Also, Tolkien from what I remember when reading LOTR was totally long winded. The Fellowship of the Rings was trimmed down tremendously and made into much more of an action title than what I remember of the book, which had long dragged out and unnecessary descriptions of things we really didn't need to advance the plot and quite above and beyond for setting the scenery. |

I watched it today. I really liked it, although some parts are sort of unbelievable or questionable.
