Cyndaquil Throughout Our Travels

Welcome to my thread here in the Visionary Glade. I suppose its purpose is pretty self-explanatory, so I'll just say that I'd appreciate it if no one else posted here. Thanks!

An abandoned book lies closed on a secluded tabletop in an out-of-the-way cafe. With a well-worn blue cover and creases in the spine, it looks to be a much-loved and frequently-perused book, which makes it odd that the owner appears to be nowhere in sight. A gust of wind flips the front cover open and a line of text on the inside reads, Property of the Writer. If found, please return to the Fizzy Bubbles Administration. On the other page appears to be a table of contents.

It was a really close match. Marcelo just...happened to have the stronger Pokemon at the time. Next time, we'll make sure we get him. In the meantime, we need to continue training, though I'm sure having more trainer battles would help.

...Well, it certainly could have gone better. I mean, we won, but it took a long time 'cause Mar only had a few attacks that could actually hit the Duskull and I had him use up all his Shadow Claws in the first few rounds. And, it was really close near the end, what with that Duskull pulling out a Focus Blast at the last second, but we squeaked by, thanks to those Hardens in the beginning and all the damage we dealt out. Next time, Potions. And a larger movepool would be nice, too.

It started off well enough, I guess, but things went downhill pretty quickly. Wildfire and I had decided to go to the Fortune Teller's Tent 'cause it sounded like the safest place out of all the others, with all their spirits of dead kids and crazy rides and whatever. It was a little weird that there was still a light from her tent and that she was able to respond to my thoughts and that she sounded much younger than she looked, but it was still bearable, y'know? Then the crystal ball exploded and became a portal and, well, I just had to go into it. Damned curiosity.

Anyway, while I was in that portal, I saw the fortune teller again and she was suddenly all down-to-earth and condescending and stuff and then my body started to freeze up. I blacked out and the next thing I knew, I was in this giant dollhouse thing and I really don't like human-like dolls. Creepy things they are.

So, I came here looking for a bird to catch, but it seems like Nature's conspiring against me. Well, I suppose I can't blame it all on Nature 'cause Luck's got a hand or two in my bad luck. See, this is what happened:

I took the Adventure Path 'cause a lot of bird Pokemon were reported to be seen there, and I did see a lot of them, but I, uh, wasn't quite paying attention to the path and I ended up tumbling down the cliff/hill thing. It wasn't completely my fault; I'd told Wildfire to help me keep an eye on the path, but I guess he decided to look up at the flying Pokemon at that exact moment and I hadn't stopped walking, so...yeah.

Anyway, after I took that tumble, I checked myself and Wildfire over to make sure we weren't too hurt and found that I'd hit my leg pretty hard on the way down. I had no idea whether it was broken, but I figured it was probably better to treat it as broken than not; besides, it hurt to put weight on it.

That wasn't the only problem, though. In the distance, I could hear a storm coming and I really didn't want to get sick on top of having an injured leg, so I ended up asking Wildfire to help me find something to walk with and somewhere to hide out, too. We eventually found this little cave thing in the side of the cliff and not a moment too soon, too, 'cause as we headed for that cave thing, it started raining. After checking the place out to make sure we weren't trespassing, we hid out there for a while.

Then, we started hearing chirping coming from further inside the cave, so I asked Wildfire to check it out. He came back and told me that there was some sort of battle going on inside the cave, but I decided not to check it out. One, I had a broken leg; I wouldn't be able to run if something came at me or if they happened to bring the cave down around us. Two, it was safer here near the front of the cave and more peaceful; we could still see the entrance from where we were, but the wind and the rain couldn't get to us. And we could hear it raining.

Of course, the storm ended up blowing a trio of Pidoves into the cave and they decided it was a smart idea to use Echoed Voice inside a cave. That was a little painful, to be honest, but they eventually stopped. Wildfire was oddly concerned about them, so we decided to go make sure they were fine. The one that we found on the way to the Pokemon battle was fine and we pointed it towards the exit, but the other two had ended up interrupting that Pokemon battle that we'd heard earlier and had handicapped the trainer against the...Boldore, I think it was. Anyway, she asked us to help her, so we did.

Between her Staravia, the wild Pidove from earlier, and Wildfire, we managed to toss the Boldore into the lake, though it didn't stay there for long. It Rock Blasted its way back out, but fainted soon after and Chloe--the other trainer--caught it. Would've been nice if she'd asked if I was interested in it, since I helped knock it out, but whatever.

With the threat to them gone, the three Pidove landed and decided to have an argument while the rest of us recovered from the fight. Only, their arguing got louder the longer it went on and it was starting to get on my nerves. I asked them to either quiet down or put their argument on hold and Chloe got her Staravia to talk to them to see if it could calm them down. It and Wildfire both listened to the conversation and then relayed it as best they could to us.

Turns out, it was two males fighting over a female, but the female had made her choice. She and her chosen male flew off, leaving the other male behind, who decided it would be a great idea to put Chloe's Staravia, Wings, to sleep. I tried to get Wildfire to talk it down, but it Taunted him and he fell for it.

Well, there's not much to say about this one. I felt the urge to look for an Electric Pokemon, so I decided to visit Cascadia's Ion Island. Then, I heard about Storm Lake and immediately chose it as my destination. Wildfire and I ended up racing to the lake's edge and then we met a Ranger who went by Cam. He told us that they weren't getting many visitors as of late, which was really weird because the lake was absolutely beautiful.

Turns out, there was a chance Zapdos and Raikou were going to fight on Ion Island again and the Rangers were tasked with keeping tourists close to shore. On the one hand, Zapdos and Raikou would be fighting on Ion Island. On the other, Zapdos and Raikou would be fighting on Ion Island. Wildfire and I ended up deciding to stick around to help however we could and maybe possibly catch a glimpse of the fighting Legendaries.

Not that Cam was very impressed with my decision. He demanded we battle him and his Ampharos to prove that we could hold our own, so we did. And we won. Narrowly, but we did. Once he was satisfied that we wouldn't be another pair of casualties, he lent me a Capture Styler, asked if I knew how to use it, and pointed at a Pidgey that'd landed in our battlefield as my practice target.

Let me just say that was nervewracking. I mean, I knew theoretically how it worked, but putting it into practice... I think I was almost more nervous about that than I was about battling Cam just a bit ago!

I was successful, though, and Cam ended up lending me the Capture Styler so I could help him evacuate the island. Only...it looked like Zapdos and Raikou decided they couldn't wait because Cam cursed at the sight of a storm rolling in. He told me to head for the Thunder Fields, while he left for the Electron Plant, so me and Wildfire headed where we were told with the befriended Pidgey in tow.

I hit the edge of the Thunder Fields just ahead of a thunderstorm that lit the plains ablaze and I immediately called out Prince, Storm, and Layla. Prince and Wildfire, I sent to help evacuate Pokémon, since Fire-types, while Storm and Layla kept any more lightning from setting the plains on fire anywhere near us. At the same time, I had Storm use Rain Dance to try to put the fire out.

It seemed to be working. The fire slowly shrunk and Prince and Wildfire herded a trio of...I think they were Bunnelby to me to evacuate when lightning struck way too close for me to feel safe. I glanced around for Storm and Layla, half expecting Storm to have wandered off a bit, but it turned out to be Layla who'd run off. Which was really weird, but I sent Prince to go fetch her while I used the Capture Styler on the wild Pokémon.

So...well, I'm not quite sure why we went there, except I'd heard about the new dam and I wanted to see it for myself. The thing was huge, like enormous, but it made Wildfire uncomfortable, which was understandable; he's a Fire Pokemon and water's his weakness, of course he'd be uncomfortable. That and I'm not entirely sure he can swim...

Anyway, we went down to the river that was coming from the dam and there was this guy who looked familiar. I felt like I should have recognized him, so I decided to ask him and honestly, I can't believe I didn't remember. Who else is known for having a Luxray, for God's sake? Well, he was being a bit of an ass, so I was gonna go see if I could find something else to do when the dam just screeched to a stop. Literally.

I myself wasn't quite sure I should be interfering with such a gigantic mechanical construction, but Volkner had done almost a complete one-eighty, personality-wise. It was a little unnerving, to be honest, but he was much friendlier now that something was happening and he pretty much offered me the chance to help him. How could I refuse?

The only problem was I had no Pokemon that could run alongside his Luxray, but there was a herd of Blitzle and Zebstrika that had been drinking from the river earlier. Volkner suggested I take one of those, saying they didn't have to be captured to be ridden, so I sent Wildfire out to start the battle. Sometime during the battle, though, Wildfire used a Flame Charge, instead of a Flame Burst, which was a little disorienting for me; how did he even learn Flame Charge in the first place?

Well, it didn't quite matter, but he had gotten paralyzed and it had gotten pretty close; both Pokemon were really beat up by this point. I'd decided by now that I might as well have that Blitzle, considering how much effort we'd already put in to weakening it, so when its leg buckled, I threw a Pokéball at it. And I caught it! It was awesome, even if Wildfire was absolutely exhausted by the effort. I ended up naming her Storm and then we headed off for the dam, only a little behind Volkner.

We made it to the bottom of the dam really quickly and Volkner stared at the thing for a good few minutes, so when he spoke again, we jumped a little; Storm was decidedly unimpressed. Once he finished talking, he hurried up to the top and we followed, only a little slower. About half-way up, Storm decided she'd complain about the steep hill, but I made sure she knew I wasn't having any fun either; she didn't complain again.

When we made it to the top, it turned out that the culprit was only a colony of Bidoof and Bibarel. I, for one, was relieved it wasn't anything worse; Volkner, on the other hand, was bitterly disappointed. He actually started complaining that there wasn't anything more exciting for him to deal with, and then, shoved the responsibility for solving the situation to me. I actually considered not doing it and making him do it, since he was saying that it was so simple "a preschooler and his Magikarp could" fix it, but I figured I might as well just deal with it. For all I knew, he could end up throwing a tantrum if I made him deal with it, like my four-year-old sister did once. Or, more likely, kick my ass off the dam.

Anyway, it was a pretty good thing that I was able to get Stream from Noriko before this occurred because it certainly made my life much easier. I just sent him out and asked him to use Water Gun to try to clear the dam. He nodded and was able to clear it all up and escape from the turbine's current, but a crack! from the Bidoof/Bibarel dam had a log drifting towards the dam with a terrified Bidoof clinging to it. Volkner actually did something and sent out his Lanturn to save the Bidoof, but something weird happened.

The dam started buzzing--y'know, that buzzing sound that tells you that something's really charged? Yeah, like that--and then it let out this huge lightning bolt skyward. That wasn't all, though; all the Electric Pokemon started acting weird. Storm reared up and I fell off of her; Volkner's Luxray got up and roared, letting Volkner's head hit the ground (serves him right); and his Lanturn stopped pushing the Bidoof to safety! So, I had Stream save the Bidoof with a Surf, which was a little painful to watch, 'cause he ended up getting hit by the log, but the Bidoof was fine.

Stream, though, was not. I'd forgotten about the turbine current when I'd told him to save the Bidoof, so he got stuck in it again and, this time, he was exhausted. He ended up getting sucked into the turbine and I absolutely could not believe it. I thought he was dead. Sliced up into little pieces and washed away, never to be seen again. I felt terrible. No, miserable. Depressed. I'd sent him back into that current because I'd forgotten about it and now he was gone forever. I didn't even care that the dam had sent out a lightning bolt because I'd lost a Pokemon within my first year of adventuring. What kind of trainer did that make me?

Eventually I came back and Volkner suggested we check out the dam's internal workings to see if Stream was still there, since Fish Pokemon apparently tended to get sucked in. He also wanted to make sure the dam would be fixed and commented that it would probably be dangerous, so I guess he got his adventure after all. Anyway, we headed down to the generators inside the dam and there was a three-way fork there, so he headed left and I headed right. Wildfire and I ended up in front of a password-locked door, but a clue on the blueprints gave me the password.

I put it in and pushed through the door when it unlocked, immediately searching the room for Stream. He didn't seem to be in the water, but there was a pair of Elekid roasting a Magikarp with parts of the generator. And then one of them pulled out Stream!

I wanted to go over there myself to snatch Stream back, but there was a six foot gap and...I didn't think I could leap that. I tried to return him, but all I got was the Elekids' attention. I ended up sending Wildfire and Mar against them, two on two so it was fair, and we fought. Both Wildfire and Mar took a beating, but we won and I got them all back to me, safe and sound.

Aaand then it turned out we were late to the rendezvous. I picked Wildfire up and bolted back the way we came, only to find Volkner missing. He couldn't have gone on because the barrier was still up, so that meant...he had to have run into some kind of problem in the Control Room.

...ughhhh. I didn't really want to go help him, but I couldn't just leave him there, so, with a huff, I trotted down the path he'd taken to see what kind of trouble he'd gotten himself into.

Down the corridor and a flight of stairs, behind a door, it turned out Volkner had gotten himself exploded while trying to find the switch. He was mostly fine somehow and finally realized that he hadn't been acting very smart, but he had a point: we still had to figure out what was going on with the generator and that meant we still had to find the switch.

I took a chance and picked the spot opposite Volkner's choice, only for that to turn out to be a Voltorb also. There wasn't any time to do more than drop it and brace myself, but Wildfire threw himself in the way and took the hit. Unsurprisingly, it knocked him out and I returned him. After two fights and an Explosion, he deserved the rest.

Volkner figured we'd gotten all the Voltorb, so any other picks would be...a lot less dangerous. I ended up picking the one directly across from his. Worst case scenario, I'd have to check the last one, but you had to do what you had to do.

Wildfire actually chose to come here, seeing as I've been making most of the choices so far; I felt it was fair, since I'd dragged him to a haunted amusement park and a reservoir. He wanted to spend some time with our newest member, too, so I sent out Imp and the two ran off down the obsidian sand to go exploring.

I hadn't been planning on getting into too much trouble here, but Luck was apparently still having fun with me: I ended up stumbling across a...Lufenian?...ritual staff thing mostly buried in the sand. I dug it out with Wildfire's help and this Cid Maple guy comes up out of nowhere to tell me as much about it as he can. He looks like an archaeologist and, after I asked a few questions, he mentioned this other organization that was also looking for the artifact I'd found. Well, that couldn't be good.

He invited me to go compare this staff with another like it at the museum and to join in on his archaeological dig, both of which I agreed to, but...I wasn't so sure once we met one of his colleagues. I dunno, maybe my expectations were the ones that were off, but something about Cid and the way he took the staff from me, among other things, were making me uneasy.

Meeting Melissa and Wildfire

The Child and her Cyndaquil
"Melissa, meet Wildfire."


In a forest clearing on the side of a route in Johto, a ten-year-old girl ran around, pretending to adventure with her own Pokemon. She would speak to an imaginary Pokemon sitting on her shoulder, inventing reactions to her words, and then send it out to battle, calling out orders and adding sound effects to represent its moves. As she tumbled and yelled, somersaulted and ran, darting through the trees on the edge of the clearing only to pop out with a war cry as she tackled an imaginary opponent, an observer could almost see the adventure she'd created come to life in that clearing.

At the base of a tree near the edge of the sun-filled circle, a woman sat with her eyes closed, basking in the sunlight. She had her head tilted back onto the bark of the tree with one leg stretched out in front of her and the other bent at the knee. Three backpacks were placed in a pile next to her--two large ones and a small one--with a Typhlosion lying down on the other side of the backpacks with its eyes closed, ears occasionally flicking upwards whenever the little girl hit the ground. A Ninetales rested its head on its front paws on the other side of the woman, its tails twitching to try to avoid having them stepped on as the child used them in her imaginary adventure. The vulpine's half-lidded eyes were locked on the child, though they momentarily darted to the apparently-sleeping woman, the prone Typhlosion, and a rustling patch of foliage.

The woman leaning on the tree had fallen into a light doze, but she was still aware enough to feel the presence of another person settle beside her; she smiled when she felt the other person wiggle his arm onto her shoulders and give her a hug. Still smiling, she cracked open her eyes to meet the gray-green eyes of her husband, Brian, who'd apparently just returned from making sure their daughter was safe from wild Pokemon for the moment.

"Hey," he whispered, smiling back at her.

"Hey," she replied, shifting her weight to lean on him instead.

Together, they turned to watch the little girl playing in the clearing alone and the woman began thinking back a decade to when the child had first entered their lives.

The woman, Katie, had been twenty-three-years-old and still very much interested in challenging all the Pokemon Leagues that she'd known of. Her traveling partner, Brian, had been a childhood friend that she'd grown up with and had promised her parents that he'd make sure she was fine, though it would be several more years before she learned of that promise; he had been twenty-seven. The pair, along with her Typhlosion, Summer, and his Ninetales, Blaze, had spent a night at a bar in Goldenrod City, after she'd taken on her first Elite Four, and had woken up the next morning with no recollection of the previous night's events.

They'd continued onwards and, as the days passed, Katie had quickly realized that something wasn't quite right. She'd gotten tired quicker and earlier, even with less exercise, and she'd gotten mood swings, where she hadn't before. She'd had cravings for things that she normally wouldn't have wanted and rejected things she'd normally love. Confused and worried, the pair had gone to a doctor and when he announced her pregnant, they both just stared at him in shock. Neither of them could find anything to say to that pronouncement, but they thanked the doctor for her time and returned to their hotel room to discuss their discovery.

At first, Katie had been against having the child, not wanting to be weighed down by the responsibilities of parenthood while she was trying to win League matches. Brian, on the other hand, was thrilled; not only had he been thinking of having a family, he loved children and had long been harboring affection for Katie. Eventually, he was able to convince her to keep the child and Melissa had been born in Cherrygrove City, after Katie had had an impulsive visit to the Johto location.

Over the next ten years, the pair continued traveling throughout the Pokemon world with their new daughter, showing her the sights and allowing her to experience the world of Pokemon. Brian had been the one to watch over her, as she grew, while Katie was still trying to to fulfill her own dream and the little girl had quickly developed into a tomboy. When she'd turned eight, though, Katie had looked at little Melissa and realized that she'd barely had a hand at all in raising her own daughter, having been frequently too busy with her Pokemon to have time for the little girl.

So, when Melissa had looked at her with her big brown eyes, Katie couldn't refuse the child's request and passed the appeal over to her Summer, who'd taken one look at the little girl and accepted. It turned out the Typhlosion and the Ninetales had gotten together long before their respective humans had and it wasn't long before there was an egg ready and waiting to be hatched. The little girl had been absolutely delighted and had taken to carrying the egg everywhere she went. It wasn't long before they'd returned to Johto again, Melissa having grown an attachment to the region before she'd even learned to speak and frequently asking to visit, going so far as to throw tantrums when she was young enough not to understand that Johto was sometimes very far away.

Katie was brought back to the present when a loud crack! split the air, the little girl playing in the clearing freezing at the sound. The Typhlosion and the Ninetales both raised their heads to look at the little backpack that they remembered seeing Melissa place the egg into with all the seriousness of a ten-year-old child. The little brown-haired girl quickly scrambled to her feet at the second crack and ran over to her bag, unzipping the pocket and pulling out her egg to place on the ground, so she could watch it hatch. An expectant silence fell over the forest clearing, the older individuals all focused on the young child staring intently at the hatching egg.

With one final loud crack, a Cyndaquil popped its way out of its egg and shook itself, flaring its flames briefly before extinguishing them and looking curiously at the little girl who sat before it. Melissa cautiously reached out a hand to pet it and it walked over to nuzzle her outstretched hand, making a broad grin stretch itself across the little girl's face. Petting the newly-born Pokemon, she ended up placing it in her lap and staring at it in awe, while it snuggled into her and peered up at her.

"Are you a girl?" she finally asked, after staring for a while. He shook his head. "Oh, you're a guy?" He nodded. "Alright then." It was obvious that she was thinking of giving him a name and she nodded when she decided. "I'll call you Wildfire. How does that sound?" He tilted his head to the side, considering the name for a moment, before he made his own decision and nodded with a bright, "Cyn-da-quil!" She squealed happily and hugged him tightly, forcing a surprised squeak from the newly-dubbed Wildfire, before she looked up at her parents. "Mammy, Daddy, look! I've got a Cyndaquil named Wildfire." She smiled up at them with all the happiness of a child who'd just gotten everything she wanted for Christmas; they couldn’t help smiling back.

Meeting Lyle and First Team Socializing

It had been almost a month since the pair had arrived at Fizzy Bubbles and they found themselves wandering through the main city again, making their way towards the Adoption Center to check out what was there. Melissa ambled down the street, in no hurry at all, with Wildfire perched on her left shoulder, as was usual. She wondered whether she should get any Pokemon this time, since she’d been there a few times to see what was there, but she hadn’t decided to get any before; she was fully aware that she would only have five available slots until she unlocked her PC and she was in no hurry to get Wildfire to level fifty.

Arriving at the Adoption Center, they entered it and looked around, gaze jumping from a Squirtle to a Budew to a pair of Aron and a Swablu. Melissa casually walked around, looking at the Pokemon available, but trying to allow none of their pleading looks influence her decision. She stopped abruptly when she saw the Lileep, though, recalling from her preliminary visit that Fossil Pokemon were only available through an Enigma Egg or through coins. Still, she wasn’t quite sure if she should adopt him, seeing as she wasn’t quite a fan of Fossils. After a moment, the teen shrugged, careful not to dislodge her starter; it couldn’t hurt, right?

She withdrew three Rare Candies and passed it to the clerk at the counter, indicating that she wanted the Lileep. Pulling out another Pokeball, she waited for the clerk to take out the Pokemon before she tapped it on the head and walked away, thinking about a suitable name for her new Pokemon.

Several days later, once she’d decided on a name for her new Lileep, she sat on the edge of her bed, setting Wildfire on the ground and releasing her Lileep. She told him, “I’ve decided to call you Lyle. It’s nice to meet you, Lyle.” She smiled at him, her expression dimming when the Lileep stared despondently at her, before introducing Wildfire. “This is Wildfire. As I’m sure you can tell, he’s my starter. Maybe you two can talk about something.” Her voice lifted up optimistically at the end, but, watching how the Lileep acted, she wasn’t really sure they’d be able to talk about anything. “Well, I’ll leave you two to it then,” she said, turning to pull a book out from her knapsack and settling down on her pillows.

On the ground, Wildfire hesitantly turned to his new teammate, hoping to establish…something with him. ”Hey, Lyle. How’re you feeling?”

Lyle sighed. ”Eh, alright, I s’pose. I guess I’m just waiting for this trainer to get sick of me, too.”

Wildfire shifted uncomfortably. ”I don’t think Melissa’d do that. She’s a pretty new trainer and you’re her second Pokemon.”

Lyle shook his head. ”No, no, she’ll get sick of me eventually. My first and last trainer got me from the Coins for Prizes only to drop me off at the AC before a half year had even passed. Then, he decided to pick me back up and then put me back. Just you wait; she’ll get rid of me eventually.”

Wildfire stared helplessly at the Lileep. He had a pretty good feeling that the other Pokemon was not going to be convinced easily, but he was now uncertain as to whether Melissa would actually keep him, with the way he was acting. Deciding to leave Lyle to brood and mope, the Cyndaquil leaped up to the bed to curl up in Melissa’s lap.

The trainer glanced down at the sudden weight in her lap, smiling at the sight of Wildfire curled up in her lap. “Hey, you two done chatting?” she asked him softly, putting hand on his back and rubbing. He nodded and thought for a moment, before looking up at her and saying, ”He’s depressed, I think. His last trainer couldn’t decide whether to keep him or place him at the Adoption Center, so he ended up at the Adoption Center, with his trainer, and then back at the Adoption Center again. He fully expects you to give him back to the AC eventually.” Though Melissa wasn’t a fluent Pokemon speaker, she could understand the gist of what Wildfire said; they’d been together so long that it would have been weirder if she didn’t understand him. She glanced at the sad-looking Lileep, before she answered her Cydnaquil, “Well, I can’t make any promises, but I’ll keep him for as long as I can.” He nodded and also glanced over to the Lileep, feeling a little sorry for the guy; the other Pokemon didn’t have the confidence in trainers (or at least, this particular one) that Wildfire had and Lyle was hurting badly. Wildfire hoped Melissa could do something for him, though he wasn’t betting on it; with her conditional promise, he figured it really would be only a matter of time before Lyle left the team.

Halloween

Melissa approached the Ouija Board somewhat excitedly, having watched the other members' results ahead of her. She hoped she'd get something nice, though based on her results from the previous events, she wouldn't get anything; it was still fun to join in on the suspense, though. It'd be really cool if I could get a shiny Unown, she thought to herself, recalling one of the veterans winning the Unown F, as she put her finger on the pointer. She stared at the board expectantly, waiting to see whether she'd get anything, but her spirits slowly fell as nothing happened. With a sigh, she removed her finger. "Guess they don't want to talk to me, either," she said, not altogether surprised and a little disappointed.

She moved on to the Haunted Mirror, releasing her Misdreavus along the way. "Hey, Imp. You ready to face the Mirror?" she asked her ghost who was visibly excited by the fact that Halloween hadn't been too long ago. She nodded, flying on ahead and up to watch as the other trainers took their turns. Melissa sighed tolerantly and addressed her Cyndaquil, who was emitting a disgruntled air from where he sat in his Pokeball. "Don't worry. We'll be fine, Wildfire. I just don't want the mods or the Mirror to think I'm putting two Pokemon in front of the Mirror and double my chances, possibly illegally, of getting tricks and treats. Especially tricks," she added, thinking back on how she'd checked the previous records before deciding whether to enter in the event. Wildfire didn't look any happier at being reminded of that, but he settled down to keep an eye on the proceedings.

Melissa began getting more and more nervous as the crowd shrank, Imp calling out the results of each trainer's encounter to her. It probably didn't help that her little ghost sounded as if she was getting nervous also. The teen winced a few times as people got banned from the shops, had their Pokemon deleveled, and lost their items, those events sticking harshly in her mind as opposed to the prizes. She began having second thoughts, but it was too late to change her mind; it was now her and Imp's turn to face the Mirror.

Imp seemed to have forgotten her nervousness in the excitement of it finally being her turn and the possibility of winning something nice, but Melissa approached much slower, the tricks still hanging grimly in her mind. That was why it took her a moment to realize that the Mirror was now showing a Blood-Red Skull and an ominous cackling was coming from it. She watched in shock as the mirror's surface turned to liquid and reached out for her Misdreavus, who shrieked in terror and struggled to escape it. "Imp!" she yelled, hovering anxiously, not daring to touch the liquid as Wildfire popped out of his Pokeball, flames flaring as he glared fiercely at the mirror. "Imp, are you okay? Imp!" If Imp made any response, the two of them couldn't hear it.

After a few more moments, the liquid trickled back to the mirror and Imp immediately darted towards Melissa, whimpering in fear. Her trainer quickly took them out of the way, so someone else could take their turn, but they didn't go far. Wildfire looked on in worry as Melissa soothed her Pokemon, the little ghost mumbling something about terror and fear and not being able to move. "It's alright, Imp. It's over now. We're right here," Melissa told her, releasing Stella, who took a moment to get oriented and then began trying to comfort Imp, as well.

As Imp's whimpers began to subside, though, Melissa began to notice something odd about her Pokemon. The Mirror had done something more than she'd thought. Well, aside from probably giving Imp a fear of mirrors for the rest of her life.

"Imp," she began and Stella, Wildfire, and Imp all looked up at her, noticing the odd tone in her voice. "You might want to take a look at yourself because I don't think the Mirror wrapped those tendrils around you for fun."

"Huh?" Imp sniffled, glancing at herself as well as she could, as Wildfire and Stella gaped.

"You're gray!" Stella exclaimed, while Wildfire added faintly, "The Mirror turned you gray."

"It did?" she asked curiously, still trying to see for herself.

Melissa reached into her bag to pull out her Pokedex, though she didn't activate it yet. "You want me to show you?"

Imp nodded, prompting Melissa to point the device at her Pokemon. She then turned the Pokedex around, so Imp could see, and the Misdreavus stared for a bit. Hesitantly, she said, "It...doesn't look too bad. I guess."

"At least you aren't orange," Melissa told her sympathetically, snapping the Pokedex closed and sticking it back in her bag. "And we didn't lose any items or get banned from any shops and you didn't get de-leveled. All in all, I think we may have gotten off better than some of the others." She motioned to the Nuzleaf that had just shown her trainer a Black Ticket. The teen then got to her feet, setting Wildfire in his customary place on her left shoulder and offering Stella and Imp their Pokeballs. Both ignored them and Melissa returned them to her belt, motioning for them to follow her as she headed out. "Time for everyone else to see what happened, I guess," she commented, glancing back at Imp. "That is, if you don't mind."

Imp shook her head slightly, still looking a little shaken, but quickly returning to her usual self. Stella glanced back to give the event location one more once-over and almost squealed at the sight of one familiar Bagon. She knew she'd run into him again one day! She was almost tempted to ask Melissa to stop, but then she noticed him get sucked into the Mirror and she stared in horror until he was spat back out, completely gray, like Imp. Stella wasn't quite sure what to make of that, but she turned and hurried away, having fallen behind her three teammates; she'd think about this new development later. Right now, there were other things to worry about.

Meeting Mar

Melissa spent the next half a month stopping by the Adoption Center at least once a day, waiting and hoping that the two listed Aron would still be there when she was eligible to adopt again. She watched as one and then the another was adopted by other new trainers, but only one item was removed from the Adoption Center's list of adoptees. She became confused and hesitant; was this a glitch? She recalled there only being two Aron in the Adoption Center and she could have sworn both had been adopted. Had the Adoption Center manager merely forgotten to remove the name?

The brunette checked daily as the next release date approached. Was she the only one who'd paid attention to that or was she just remembering it wrong? Should she bring it up to the manager? And if she did, who exactly should she be sending the notice to? But, at the same time, she'd been looking forward to picking up an Aron herself and, without knowing their rarity, this could be one of her only chances to get one.

This indecision prevented her from making any sort of decision until the scheduled release date, which saw her hurrying over to the Adoption Center with an empty Pokeball and three Rare Candies. She'd finally decided that it couldn't hurt to try and, if it turned out that her asking let the manager double-check, then, well, it wasn't like she wasn't expecting it.

Wildfire was grumpy on her shoulder, having been woken up from sleep when she'd finally made up her mind. He blearily watched as the new teammate was added with little fuss and shook his head at his trainer. There she'd been, fretting all month long, and there wasn't even a single thing wrong when she finally went to get him. Hopefully, she wouldn't be as wound up anymore, now that she'd gotten the Pokemon she'd wanted.

This time, when she sent out her Pokemon, Melissa could only be grateful that the room she was currently renting was built to withstand the densest small Pokemon. Otherwise, there would be a new hole in the floor as her Steel-type materialized in a flash of red, seeing as she'd forgotten that Steel-types tend to weight a lot. Maybe next time she'd head down to the small park behind the building to let her Pokemon out because she definitely wasn't planning on stopping these meetings. How else would they get to meet their teammates and learn about them before battling alongside each other?

Wildfire padded up to their newest teammate and introduced himself, while Lyle moped off to the side. By the way her Aron was shooting disdainful looks at the fossil, though, Melissa doubted he was very impressed with them. Still, this was basically get-to-know-each-other time, so she wouldn't interfere unless Moves were being thrown.

She was just about to settle down and pretend to be busy doing something so the three Pokemon could start talking when Wildfire came back and gave her a flat, expectant look. She blinked down at him in confusion.

"Didn't you have a nickname for him?" Wildfire pointedly asked.

"Ah. Right." Melissa grinned sheepishly at her starter and then the newbie. "I'm gonna be calling you Mar, instead of just Aron. Welcome to the team, Mar."

She got a considering look for several moments, before the newly-christened Mar nodded. "Thanks. I hope to be a useful addition to the team."

With that, she left them to their own devices.

"Hi. I'm Wildfire and that's Lyle. It's nice to meet you," Wildfire said, motioning to the fossil off to the side when his name was mentioned.

He got a steady look for his troubles and then a respectful nod. "Hello, Wildfire. It's nice to meet you. I don't believe I have a nickname, so I suppose I'm just called Aron."

The Steel-type shot a glance at Lyle. "What's wrong with Lyle? Is he usually like that?"

"Uh, as far as I can tell." Wildfire also eyed the fossil for a moment, but Lyle didn't really do much in response. "He's not all that interested in interacting because he doesn't think he'll be here all that long."

"That's ridiculous," Aron immediately returned, shooting the Pokemon a disdainful look. "He should be trying to get stronger, so the trainer won't put him back or trade him off."

"Melissa," Wildfire corrected. "She's not just a trainer; she's our trainer. And she'd prefer to be called by her name."

Aron gave Wildfire an odd look, but nodded in acceptance. "Melissa then. But, that doesn't mean she might not trade us away or give us back to the Adoption Center."

"Nooo, I'm pretty sure you and I aren't going anywhere, at least." Wildfire had a wry note in his voice. "She spent an entire month fussing over whether there was still an Aron in the Adoption Center and then hurried over on the day of the monthly release to pick you up. Also," he added, when Aron opened his mouth to speak, "she's been wanting one since we saw some in Hoenn with the family." Wildfire smugly crossed his arms and waited for Aron's response, but the dual-type only blinked and nodded.

"Oh, gimme a sec. I'm pretty sure you're supposed to have a nickname, too. Lemme just ask her about that."

The two Pokemon and trainer had a quick conversation, which changed Aron's name to Mar.

"There you go. Not just another Aron, now. You're Mar." Wildfire grinned at him. Despite his doubts, Mar couldn't help giving the obvious starter a brief grin back.

Meeting Stella

It was her second event since coming to Fizzy Bubbles and one of the many goodies offered was a choice between a Trading Card Palace Pass that was valued at 75k and a Rare Egg House Pass that didn't require a first capture to use. Given most of her 'generation' of Trainers were still very new to Fizzy Bubbles with small teams, she wasn't surprised at all to see most, if not all of them, grabbing the Egg House Pass.

The Egg House was, unsurprisingly, crowded when she stopped by to redeem her Pass, her fellow Trainers eager to expand their teams. Not that she couldn't say the same of herself; she was going for a Dragon Mystery Egg for a reason, though she wasn't entirely sure the Pokémon she was aiming for was considered Rare. She'd epically failed at finding the Breeding Center Rarity List during her application process and, though it wasn't an exact match to the Egg House Rarity List, it would've been nice to have some idea of what Pokémon she might end up with. Not that she would likely trade away whatever she got, but knowing the possibilities would've been nice.

The week passed quickly and she was soon back at the Egg House with several other Trainers, waiting to see what would hatch out of their eggs. The first trainer's egg was also a Dragon Mystery egg and it hatched into a male Bagon, looking proud to be the first one to hatch. Melissa's was next and she wasn't all that surprised to see that it was another Bagon, though the look it gave the Bagon next to it made it clear that Melissa's was likely a girl. The person running the counter quickly handed Melissa her Bagon in an effort to distract the newly-hatched Pokémon, an action Melissa agreed with, before they continued making sure the remaining eggs hatched properly.

Melissa didn't take long to put her newest Pokémon into a Pokéball, but she hung around for a while longer to see what other people hatched. The trainer who hatched a Houndour immediately after her Bagon was one that she envied and she half-wished she'd picked up a Dark Mystery egg instead, but, well, done was done. There were also several latecomers and she waited to see what they would hatch, but none of their hatches were anything that she was particularly interested in, aside from maybe taking note of their rarities for future reference, so she finally headed back to her place, thinking of names for her Bagon. She looked up Bagon's regional Pokédex entries. Maybe something about the sky or stars?

"What's she doing?" Mar asked Wildfire, a few days later while Melissa was on her computer. Their trainer had been clicking around on there for a while, occasionally making odd faces at the screen.

The Cyndaquil looked up from where he was checking Lyle over to make sure the Lileep was doing as well as he could be. "Uh...let me finish up here." He finished up his pretty one-sided chat with the fossil Pokémon and hopped up onto the couch to take a look at the screen.

"Hey there," Melissa absently greeted him, draping her left arm around him.

"Hi." He blinked at the long list of names, tilted his head to the side, and then looked up at her. "What're you doing?"

"Looking for a name for Bagon." She clicked on one of the names to read its meaning and hummed thoughtfully, though she was also frowning at it. "She's shown enough of a personality for one, but I dunno what would be appropriate. I've got a couple of ideas, though they don't really feel right, but..." Melissa shrugged and glanced down at Wildfire. "I'll decide eventually."

Wildfire nodded and wiggled out from under her arm, a small grin on his face at the mock-offended huff that followed him as he hopped down to talk to Mar. The Aron nodded at him in acknowledgement and thanks, before tilting his head to the side.

"So, why is she looking up names for the Bagon and didn't for me?"

"Well, she's had that name in mind for someone for a while, and it's usually a male name..." Wildfire shrugged. "I dunno really. She just didn't."

Mar hummed thoughtfully, glancing up at Melissa, before turning back to Wildfire. "What's the Bagon like? You met her, right?"

Wildfire nodded. "Melissa didn't leave her out for long, though, 'cause she was checking out the male Bagon next to her."

Mar blinked and his voice was incredulous when he asked, "Really?"

"Yep." Wildfire's voice was dry. "Didn't say anything to him, though, so probably a bit shy. Aside from that, Melissa hasn't let her out of her Pokéball, so you probably know as much as I do."

There was a moment of silence.

"The first thing she does when she hatches is check out the Bagon next to her?" Mar was clearly having a bit of trouble with that part.

"Mhm."

"And she's supposed to be our teammate?"

Wildfire frowned at that. "She just hatched, Mar; give her a chance." He glanced at Lyle and lowered his voice. "Besides, Melissa probably won't trade her off, since she got her in an event with a special Pass, so even if you don't like her, I'm pretty sure we're getting stuck with her."

Mar blinked and glanced up at Melissa again, before frowning and sighing. The Aron was very aware that, aside from Wildfire, everyone else could be dropped at the Adoption Center or traded away at a moment's notice, so he reluctantly backed down. "Alright. You'd know best, anyway."

It took her a while to settle on a name and, even then, she wasn't particularly thrilled with it. Still, it was rather appropriate for a Pokémon who was reaching for the sky, so she figured it couldn't hurt to give it to her Bagon for now. If she found something that fit better, then she could always change it.

Melissa sat on the floor as she released her newest Pokémon, the Bagon appearing in a flash of red. The Dragon-type blinked and looked up at Melissa, who smiled at her, before speaking. "Welcome to the team, Stella. That's Wildfire, my starter, Lyle, and Mar." Wildfire waved and greeted the newcomer with a grin, while Lyle only glanced over for a moment when he heard his name. Mar nodded his acknowledgement, eyeing Stella critically all the while. "I want you to get to know them because they're probably going to be the teammates you'll be working with the most, okay?" Stella glanced from Melissa to the three other Pokémon and then nodded a bit hesitantly. "Go on then." Melissa leaned back against her couch and got to work adding Stella to her records, while observing her Pokémon's interactions as discreetly as she could.

Stella turned uncertainly towards two of her trainer's other Pokémon and waved. "Uh, hi?"

"Hi!" the Cyndaquil replied cheerily. She figured this must be Wildfire as he was the only Fire-type of the three. "I'm not sure if you noticed me when Melissa let you out a while ago, but I'm Wildfire."

"Nice to meet you." Stella could feel herself beginning to smile.

"This is Mar and that's Lyle." Wildfire pointed to the Aron beside him and then to the Lileep looking sad and lost in thought a bit away from their trio.

"It's nice to meet you, too, but...is, is he okay?" Stella glanced towards Lyle, feeling like she wanted to, to help him somehow.

Mar snorted and shot Lyle some kind of mean look, while Wildfire pointedly ignored Mar's reaction. "He's, well, don't mind him too much," the Cyndaquil replied. "He's a bit of a pessimist."

"More like he's given up," Mar muttered snidely, before pinning her with a critical eye. "But, setting that aside, did you really eye up a male Bagon just after hatching? Wildfire says you did and, well, I'm not saying I don't believe him, but...?"

"Mar," Wildfire said warningly, but that didn't stop Mar from eyeing her expectantly for her response. Wildfire glanced at her and it took her a moment, but she nodded.

Stella was blushing, feeling embarrassed, but rallied what little confidence she had at Wildfire's look. "It's, it's fine," she told him, before forcing herself to meet Mar's eyes. "I, well, I...yes. Yes, I did. He was there and he was cute; can you blame me?"

Mar looked her up and down and then sighed. "As long as you don't get distracted mid-battle--"

"I won't," she said decisively.

"--then we're fine." He nodded at her and wandered over to a different part of the room.

She watched him go, glancing at Wildfire once Mar was far enough away and lowering her voice. "Is, is he always like that?"

"So far?" Wildfire was watching Mar with a thoughtful frown, before he turned to her and shrugged. "More or less."

Stella hummed pensively. "How long has he been with...Melissa?"

"Not long. Around two weeks or so."

"...he still didn't have to be so rude." She frowned at Mar's back.

Enter Aiden

"What're you doing?"

Aiden hummed and glanced up from his laptop as Michael dropped down next to him on the couch, peering curiously at what his younger brother was working on. Windows upon windows of publicly-available, registered trainer accounts covered the screen, each with a list of their owned Pokémon and associated currency balances displayed underneath. On Aiden’s other side, a spiral-bound notebook lay open, showing a list of names, some of which had been crossed out.

“Looking up trainer currency balances.” Aiden tapped his pencil against his lips, studying the screen in front of him for a moment, before he gave a minute shake of his head and crossed out another name on his list. “Some of these people have so much money. And they never do anything with it.” He looked at Michael, bemused. “What are they saving up for? Aside from a Secret Base on, like, Birth Island or something, there’s nothing that needs that much money.”

Michael shrugged. “Maybe they just like having a lot for an emergency?”

“I guess.” Aiden went back to what he was doing. “Nobody has a lot of Pokédollars yet, since they weren’t introduced all that long ago, but the number of coins and Candies some of these guys have is ridiculous. Especially since coins were restricted back to the Coins for Prizes and Base stuff.”

“What’re you looking at people’s coin balances for?”

Aiden paused and glanced at Michael out of the corner of one eye. “Well…I kinda wanna…try out the whole Pokémon Trainer thing? Since Mom and Dad didn’t even consider letting us when everyone else left, but, well, they’re not here now, so, I figured, why not?” He shrugged a bit sheepishly and ducked his head, while Michael looked between the computer, his younger brother, and the notebook.

Michael groaned as he made sense of what was going on and had to cover his face with his hands. “You want to go do the Pokémon thing and steal someone’s money to do it?”

“You know our parents aren’t gonna pay for it.” Aiden shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “I’m just gonna borrow their money and pay them back later.”

“What makes you think they aren’t gonna notice and call the bank? Or the police?” Michael dropped his hands into his lap and sagged into the couch, glaring tiredly at Aiden.

“What d’you think I’m doing, Mike?” Aiden retorted, glaring right back. “I’m not stupid. I don’t wanna get caught any more than you wanna have to deal with it. That’s why I’m looking into which trainers don’t pay all that much attention to their finances or don’t seem to care. God, you can be just like our parents sometimes.” He huffed and turned back to his laptop, focusing hard on the screen.

Michael snorted and pushed himself up. “Whatever, man. Just watch your back and don’t get into too much trouble. I can’t bail you out if you fuck up out there.”

“Like I’ll need your help,” Aiden muttered, resuming his search.

He’d been thinking about doing this for a few years already, which Mike should’ve known, but Aiden’d realized that there were gonna be some things he could and couldn’t do, if he didn’t wanna get caught. Like not touching the pile of Rare Candies that were probably gathering dust in the Candy Store because, unlike the coins, the Candies probably weren’t being converted into digital form. Pokédollars were also out, since the inflow was so little that any change would probably be noticed. He’d have to pick someone who’d didn’t go through Pokéballs very fast, so they wouldn’t notice if he skimmed one or two off of them, and it’d probably be easier if it wasn’t someone who was on the verge of exploding their PC space. He wouldn’t be able to use the stores, most likely, unless he picked someone who didn’t really use all of them, all the time, but that wasn’t any real loss. The entire point of this thing was the adventure and Pokémon, right?

He crossed out another few names, mostly because they may have been mostly inactive, but they were apparently frequent users of the Fizzy Bubbles chat and/or forums. Major names and their associates hadn’t even made his original list; he didn’t want to draw a lot of attention to himself, after all. That was how you got caught. He had to cross out the majority of the names left when he went to look them up and realized that they’d been inactive for really long times. It would just look suspicious if there was activity there without an ‘I’m back’ message.

That didn’t leave him with many options, but he kept on coming back to one in particular, for some reason. Sporadic activity, lots of Pokéballs left over, didn’t seem to care much for her coin balance—though it certainly wasn’t an amazing balance. She didn’t really seem to interact with the other trainers all that much, especially in a public setting, and she looked like she might be a bit overwhelmed with Pokémon, at the moment.

…Aiden decided to test her account first.

Melissa blinked as she looked at her coin balance, wondering whether she’d imagined a change. She checked the first digit of her balance, pretty much the only digit she recalled clearly, and, upon finding it unchanged, decided to just shrug the incident off. A bit of variation was to be expected, what with her chances in the Roulette, but she was still very far away from being able to afford all of the additions she wanted on her team. Besides, she was taking a break from adding new members because she was way overdue to spend time with…a lot of her Pokémon, something that she was currently working on rectifying.

Brushing the thought from her mind, she went back to mingling with her Pokémon, paying sharp attention to their individual personalities and preferences.

Scrapped FPaG Intro

A female trainer in her late teens ambled into the park, glancing around at the nicely-mowed lawn and colorful gardens scattered throughout the location. She had recently been considering returning to the Bar to give her Pokémon more time to mingle with the others there, but this place had opened and it had attracted her attention, instead. It certainly helped that this one was much closer to where she was currently staying and it made more sense to bring out her Blitzle and Torkoal here than in such an enclosed space. Not to mention what her Cranidos was like…

As she made her way to the lake, she spotted a couple trainers she only knew in passing, but she wasn’t quite in the mood for chatting with them yet. Maybe later, she thought, reaching the lake’s edge and unclipping six occupied Pokeballs from the lopsided belt on her waist. One big burst of light later and six more Pokémon had joined the trainer, the Cyndaquil sitting on her left shoulder, and the Swablu sitting on her right shoulder at the edge of the lake.

“Alright,” Melissa said cheerfully, clapping her hands once. “We’re at the Fizzytopian Park and Gardens this time, which, I figure, has got to be better for Storm and Toba than the Bar.” The Blitzle looked unimpressed, while the Torkoal took his time looking around curiously. Melissa’s expression dropped for a moment, before she turned to the Finneon swimming in the lake. “I’m sure you appreciate this, huh, Stream? You’ve got a lot more room to swim, after all.” Stream nodded happily as he swam figure-eights. Melissa smiled at his happiness, before she turned to look for her Aron, but the Pokémon had already left. This time, she just let the cheeriness slide off her face as she sighed sadly.

Ever since she’d brought back Toba from the Egg House back in November, Mar had been acting strangely. He’d become touchy and irritable, rarely coming over to hover near her the way he did before whenever she was in her room. Every time she tried to get him to meet Toba, too, he’d made sure to be far away. Or, at least, as far away as possible. And then, when she’d tried to get Wildfire, her Cyndaquil, to talk him into meeting Toba, even for a moment, Wildfire had come back acting a little bit weird.

The brunette ran a hand through her hair with another sigh, before taking a seat on the grass. Behind her, she heard Storm snort, slightly derisively, before the Blitzle trotted off a little ways to graze or explore or whatever it was Blitzle did in their free time. Toba, Stream, and Stella came over to where she sat, Toba settling himself down on her right side and Stella on her left, while Stream swam in front of her. Cirrus remained seated on her right shoulder, gently nibbling her ear in an attempt to reassure her.

“Why is he acting so weird?” she wondered aloud, having run that question through her mind so many, many times during the past months. She knew it had something to do with Toba…was he, perhaps, jealous? She almost wanted to laugh at the thought. Mar? Jealous? Of a newcomer like Toba? It was a random thought, but something about it rang true. She glanced up at Imp, who was silently watching the quintet. “He’s not jealous, is he?” The Misdreavus hesitated before nodding slowly, watching Melissa’s face take on an incredulous expression. “He isn’t.”

“He, uh, is,” Imp replied, fidgeting and glancing nervously at her trainer.

“What would he have to be jealous of?” Melissa asked, turning to stare at her Misdreavus. She glanced at the Torkoal who had shifted at her question. “Er, no offense, Toba, but you understand, right?” The Coal Pokémon nodded reluctantly and Melissa turned back to Imp. “He’s my second-longest partner and, now, the first Pokémon I’ve picked up here in Fizzy Bubbles. Sure, I don’t spend as much time adventuring with him as I should, but I’d never trade him for anything.”

Imp glanced uneasily at Toba, obviously feeling a little bit pressured, but continued on. “I heard him when he was talking to Wildfire.” She hesitated, before her words tumbled out in a rush. “And he told me that he thinks you’ll replace him and Wildfire with Toba ‘cuz Toba’s a Fire-type too and he looks a lot stronger than him, so you’d like him better than him and Wildfire.” The childlike Ghost looked down where here feet would have been, before peeking up at Melissa. “You won’t tell him I told you, will you? He told me not to say anything ‘cause he didn’t want you to change how you treated him and he didn’t want to give you another reason to get rid of him.” Her voice had gained a bit of a panicked tone in it by the end of her statement, prompting Melissa to raise her hands in a “calm-down” motion.

“Alright, alright,” she said with a glance at the confused-looking Toba and Stella who looked like she wanted to face-palm. Stream was smiling a little unsurely and Cirrus just tilted his head as he watched everyone else. There was a slight tone of laughter underlining her voice, though she gave Imp a small smile. Who would have guessed Mar could be so insecure? “I’m not going to get rid of Mar and I won’t tell him what you told me. Now go meet other Pokémon.” Melissa motioned for her Pokémon to go off and explore, feeling much better now that she knew what exactly was bothering her Aron. She huffed lightly once most of them had gone. “Who’d have thought it.” She shook her head in amazement, leaning back onto the grass. “Mar, jealous.”

A rather moody Aron was wondering aimlessly across the park, no destination in mind except away from his trainer. He was also trying not to think about the Torkoal that had joined the team about several months ago and was steadily replacing him on the team.

What’s he got that I haven’t?” he said to himself grumpily.

He was evidently not succeeding.

I’ve got just as much strength as he does. Sure, I may not be a Fire-type, but Steel’s great at defending,” he continued, not paying any attention whatsoever to his surroundings. “Like at that dam, if she’d sent out Stella instead of me, we might not have won against those Elekid and Wildfire would’ve been more injured than he had been. And I actually won my trainer battle, unlike Wildfire.

Still mad?” The question had Mar spinning around to see who’d snuck up on him and tensing, preparing to Metal Claw the intruder.

…well, it’d make him feel better, even if it was (probably) a stupid move.

It turned out to be unnecessary as Wildfire pushed his way through the brush to come up alongside the Iron Armor Pokémon, looking at him expectantly. “Oh, it’s you,” he replied flatly, turning to continue walking, Wildfire falling in step.

Still mad,” the Cyndaquil nodded to himself.

Mar snorted. “What was your first clue?” Wildfire shrugged, the pair walking in silence for a few moments, before it was broken by the team’s (pretty much) leader.

Thought you’d like to know that Imp spilled,” Wildfire said off-handedly, bringing Mar to an abrupt halt.

She didn’t.” Mar’s voice had flattened even more, if that was possible, even as the dual-type turned to find the little loudmouth and smack her with a well-placed Shadow Claw.

Wildfire nodded again. “She told Melissa when she asked. Turns out she isn’t favoring him or anything. Even asked what you’ve got to be jealous of”—“I’m not jealous!” he exclaimed, pausing to glare at Wildfire, who continued as though he hadn’t heard him—“before she said she wasn’t gonna replace you.

She probably just said that to reassure Imp,” Mar replied, still debating the merits of giving the Misdreavus a Shadow-Claw-enhanced slap for talking about things to someone he’d specifically asked her to keep her mouth shut around. “We all know she really likes that ghost, for some reason.

It’s ‘cause ‘that ghost’ is her first non-Event egg hatch and she reminds her of her sister,” Widlfire reminded him and Mar twitched. The Fire-type’s voice had hardened, meaning he was getting impatient with Mar’s hard-headedness, and, as this was a pretty rare event for the normally easy-going Cyndaquil, Mar reluctantly began to listen properly. “Besides, she described you as being her ‘second-longest partner’ and her ‘first Pokémon in Fizzy Bubbles’ and we both know how much worth she puts into those labels of hers.” Both silently agreed to ignore the fact that Mar wasn’t actually the first Pokémon she’d obtained in Fizzy Bubbles; it didn’t carry much weight when more than half of their team wouldn’t know who they were referring to if they mentioned Lyle. “And, you might have missed this while you were being jealous and trying to keep away from her, but she was really worried she’d done something to offend you. And with both Storm being Storm and you doing this, she was starting to think she’d messed up somewhere as a trainer and a friend.” Even without his eyes visible, Wildfire’s glare was evident in his voice and Mar found that he couldn’t meet that glare. He already knew Storm barely respected Melissa, but that his behavior had caused her to worry made most of his jealousy dissolve. After all, if she was going to replace him, she wouldn’t care what he thought, right?

Wildfire obviously picked up on his change in thought because the heat from his glare disappeared and he began walking again, abruptly changing the subject. “You know she picked up an Enigma Egg on Christmas? And she hatched a Storm one last month?

Mar nodded wearily. “What happened to expanding our team slowly?

Wildfire shrugged. “Blame the rule change around the time Toba joined us.” The Cyndaquil then glanced around, stopping in his tracks when he couldn’t find anything even vaguely familiar. “Er…d’you have any idea where we are, by the way?

The Aron glanced around, too, before his expression turned flat. “No. Were you paying any attention?

Wildfire shook his head sheepishly. “You wanna just pick a direction and walk?

We couldn’t get any more lost, if we tried,” replied Mar wryly, so, with a shrug, the duo began walking for the third time.

Meanwhile, not too far from where Melissa was lying on her back with her arms crossed behind her head and one leg crossed over the other, a Blitzle was grazing and trying to ignore her aquatic tag-a-long. It wasn’t that he was being loud; she just didn’t want to deal with the uncertain and somewhat insecure Finneon. Honestly, she couldn’t even figure out how the fish had gotten so dependent on a human’s opinion in the first place. What did it matter what those useless, harmless bipedal things thought anyway when any Pokémon could easily get rid of them, should he or she so choose?

Uh, hey Storm?” Stream said as he swam alongside the Electric-type. She took a moment to glance at him briefly, before turning back to her thoughts. Pokémon shouldn’t be that insecure, she thought to herself, even as another thought struck her simultaneously. But his teammates aren’t. Just look at Wildfire and the Swablu and Misdreavus and Bagon and Torkoal and even the Aron, before the Torkoal arrived. None of them are this insecure. Still, she couldn’t help her ingrained wariness of humans, in general, nor the instinctive reaction to blame everything bad that happened on them.

I was just wondering what you thought of Melissa,” he continued, taking her glance as a go-ahead. “I mean, you’ve been on the team for awhile now.” He paused and watched her uncertainly until she reluctantly nodded. “But I’ve noticed that you don’t seem to like Melissa all that much more than you did when we first met.

She snorted in amusement, but agreed. She was just surprised that this particular Pokémon she’d just been thinking nervous and timid was the one to confront her on this. Maybe he wasn’t so insecure, after all. Or maybe it was being with this human that made him less uncertain. She couldn’t deny noticing how the Finneon seemed to be getting braver and more sure of himself as the months passed, but she hadn’t known whether his nervousness had been because of her joining the team or if he had already been like that before she’d joined. From what Wildfire and the Bagon said, though, this Finneon had been traded to their human after about a week of being offered up constantly by his last trainer and that was the main reason he was the way he had been. If she recalled correctly, the Aron hadn’t been too impressed with the Finneon’s behavior either.

Honestly? No, I don’t really like our human,” she finally said, glancing briefly at said human. “She isn’t strong enough or competent enough to ensure that we don’t end up arguing with each other or fighting each other, as shown by the current…disagreement between the Aron and the Torkoal. Had she had a better grip on us, this ridiculous argument would have been resolved within days of it occurring, instead of having it drag on for months.” She stomped her front right hoof irritably. “If something like this had happened in my herd, it would have been ended within a few days, if not on the day it began.

But, uh, we’re not in your herd,” Stream pointed out hesitantly, before cringing when Storm turned her glare on him.

She didn’t even turn to give her answer. “He would be a much more suitable trainer. If the human was the Slowking, that Cyndaquil would be the Alakazam in the background, making sure everything ran well for her.

Oh, I guess you don’t know, huh.” He almost sounded like he was talking to himself, but Storm caught it anyway.

I’m sorry?” She glanced at him with a look that had given younger Blitzle reason to leave her alone. She was surprised once again when he didn’t quite seem as scared as she expected.

Er, Wildfire once mentioned that he’d learned that from conversations with Melissa,” he explained, eyeing her cautiously. He didn’t think she’d try to attack him electrically—she’d be electrifying the entire lake, if she did that—but that still left physical attacks and he certainly didn’t want to be attacked by his own teammate.

At her skeptical look, he continued, “Honestly, that’s what he said: that some of the things he does are things that Melissa’d mentioned she’d thought about doing, but always decided against ‘cause she knew she’d feel bad about it, afterwards.” He moved back towards the shore as he watched her expression. She looked like she couldn’t quite decide between thoughtfulness, confusion, and incredulity, before it settled on incredulity.

Her? The human who looked absolutely torn about the fact that one Pokémon was deciding not to speak with her?” she finally spluttered, motioning with a jerk of her head. “That one?” Stream nodded with a lopsided smile. It really seemed unbelievable when it was said just like this in such a peaceful place, but he didn’t doubt Wildfire. And, he’d caught glimpses of her expression while he was helping out a Bidoof and she really did look like she could have said some of the things Wildfire had. Besides, she and Wildfire had been together for way longer than the rest of them; if anyone knew her, it would be the Cyndaquil that was practically their leader.

The little fish seemed to be convinced of his point and that was almost enough to convince her. However, she wasn’t going to just take his word for it and quickly brushed aside the faint memory from when she had first been captured. She snorted again. “I’ll believe it when I see it.” It was clear that the quadruped would be joining their trainer when she began her next adventure, wherever she decided to go and regardless of who else was going, too; he hoped it would be enough to convince her.

Imp made sure to drift away innocently when Melissa shooed them off to meet new Pokémon, though she was pretty sure her trainer hadn’t noticed. Once she’d put several trees and bushes between them, the Misdreavus grinned happily as she glanced down at the two Pokeballs she’d ‘borrowed’ while her trainer was preoccupied, knowing they held her two newest teammates; she figured they’d want a chance to stretch their legs, too. With a giggle at her own sneakiness, Imp released the two Pokémon, hurrying back to replace the Pokeballs as the two materialized.

The Cranidos shook his head before glancing around, quickly noticing their very neat and natural surroundings. Seeing nothing too out of the ordinary, he then turned to the funny looking blue thing with yellow bulbs that he’d ended up next to and began sizing it up. It didn’t look very threatening and it seemed to be either very stupid or very confident in its abilities to not be paying him any mind when it was smaller than him. Still, were those bulbs supposed to be flashing like that? They almost reminded him of…something, but he brushed it away. If it was important, he would have remembered it. Curious, he reached out to bite it, figuring it was some sort of fruit or something, only to jerk back as he got zapped. The blue thing squealed at the same time, backing away as the flashing pattern changed, releasing Bubbles as it did, which made the fossil circle around it warily. Okay, so it wasn’t food…but it had tried to attack him and he wanted to make sure it knew he was larger than it. He lowered his head and charged.

When Signal materialized, his first reaction was to shrink back at the sudden space around him, feeling very, very small. But, when nothing popped up to chase after him (the Cranidos he was standing beside was looking around for the moment), he began to try to find out where he was. He thought he might have remembered hearing his trainer mention something about a park, but then, where was she? He hadn’t quite been paying attention to what was going on outside…

He was broken out of his thoughts when the Cranidos bit one of his antennae, squealing in surprise and pain and backpedaling, the flashing pattern changing from a calm flickering to a panicked burst. Instinctively, he released a stream of Bubbles, hoping it would deter the fossil from attacking again, but it just circled around his attack and charged at him, head first. He turned and ran with another panicked scream, almost immediately passing by a surprised Misdreavus who he quickly decided to use as a shield. “Helpmehelpmeohpleasehelpme!” he begged, cowering behind her as the Cranidos approached. Looking bewildered now, the Ghost type nevertheless Astonished the fossil with a shriek, causing the Cranidos to stumble and pause to regain his balance.

In the following pause, Imp tried to figure out what had happened. “What were you two doing? Were you playing a game?”

Signal’s antennae began flashing rapidly as he shook his head, making sure to keep the other Pokémon between him and the Cranidos. “I was just looking around to see where we were when he bit me. And then, I accidentally let out a Bubble and he tried to Headbutt me.” He ‘eeped’ when the Cranidos began eyeing him again, ducking behind Imp.

“Oh…well, don’t bite him,” Imp told the Cranidos. “You two are on the same team. You shouldn’t be trying to hurt your teammates.” She nodded seriously as the Cranidos seemed to evaluate her. He snorted after a moment, but didn’t look like he would try to go after Signal again, turning his attention elsewhere. “He shouldn’t try to hurt you anymore,” she then said to Signal, beaming as the Chinchou peeked out cautiously.

He was silent before he asked tentatively, “Uh, he’s walking away. Is that a good thing?” She whirled around to see the end of the Cranidos’ tail disappear into the bushes, giggling as she began to follow him.

“Nope, but it’s a good time to play Follow-the-Leader,” she said happily, motioning for Signal to follow. After a moment’s hesitation, the Angler Pokémon hesitantly moved forward, thinking that these two were a more than a little weird, but better to stick with his teammate than a stranger.

Meeting Hint (Original)

Aiden walked into the Coins for Prizes with as much confidence as he could when he felt like he could be caught and arrested at any moment. His experimental, electronic coin skimming had finally gathered enough to buy a Rotom, so here he was, slightly jumpy and eagerly anticipating his first Pokémon.

“Welcome to the Coins for Prizes,” said the person behind the counter. “What can I help you with today?”

“Um, I want to buy a Rotom?” Aiden pulled out a card. “I’ve got the necessary funds.”

“Go ahead and transfer it over then. Do you have an empty Pokéball?” The person nodded at the card reader on the counter.

“Yeah.” Aiden handed the Pokéball over and then nervously eyed the card reader.

“Great! I’ll just go grab one for you real quick.” The person disappeared into the back room as Aiden swiped his card, silently letting out a relieved breath when the transaction went through. Just one more thing he hadn’t been able to check before taking the leap, but it worked! His “unofficial” card worked!

Aiden had to fight the urge to grin when the person returned, arm outstretched with the Pokéball ready to be returned to him.

“There you go. I hope you have many adventures together!” The person smiled and Aiden let himself grin, figuring anyone would be happy about this. “Was there anything else?”

“Nope! Thanks!” Aiden nodded at the person and walked out, unable to stop glancing down at the Pokéball in his hand. His very own Pokémon! And he hadn’t even gotten questioned over it!

“I should probably give you a nickname, huh?” He hummed in thought, rotating the Pokéball as he pondered on a good name. “Hax? No, too much.” He went back to humming, wracking his brains for a meaningful name. “Hex, maybe? No, I think she’s got a Pokémon called Hex and we’re ‘officially’ the same person, so, hm. How about Hint? Like in a game.”

Aiden snickered as a thought struck him. “Oh, wait, that’s great! ‘Hint, use Discharge!’ ‘Hint, use Thunder Shock!’ ‘Hint, dodge that!’”

The Pokéball in his hand shuddered and Aiden’s grin widened. “Is that a yes?” It didn’t move.

He blinked, grin fading as he tried to figure out what was wrong. “Oh! Duh! Shake once for yes and two for no.”

The Pokéball shook once.

“So, Hint?”

The Pokéball shook once.

“Awesome! Hint it is.”

He was definitely looking forward to adventuring with his new Pokémon.

Interactions with an Aerodactyl (So Far)

Collecting the Aerodactyl posts into one for reference.

Reposting this part from here.

"Uh, is it supposed to be doing that?" Mike asked dubiously, watching the egg wobble.

"I think so," Aiden said, twitching as a loud crack hit the air and the egg's shell started to break. They watched the shell fracture for a moment longer, spotting claws and fangs through the cracks, before Mike scooped up the egg and dumped it in his brother's hands.

"I think you should take that outside before it finishes hatching because that looks dangerous."

"They're all dangerous, Mike." Aiden rolled his eyes and then had to juggle the egg as it shifted and another crack formed. "Right. Heading outside."

He hurried out the door and tried not to trip down the stairs, bursting out the front door of the apartment building and jogging for the nearest park. The egg shook and shifted in his grasp, its shell cracking and jabbing at his hands as the Pokémon within did its best to get out. By the time Aiden reached a clearing he figured worked well enough, he almost dropped the egg in his hurry to set it on the ground.

"Owowowowow." He examined his hands and arms, visually tracing the raised red lines and periodically glancing at the egg. What the heck was in there?

The egg shattered a moment later, dumping a dinosaur Pokémon onto the grass. Aiden stared. That was an Aerodactyl! Holy shit! And it was his!

It growled and snapped its jaws as Aiden approached it, but he reached out to touch it anyway. It was his! His starter! And what a starter it was!

He had to snatch his hand back when it tried to Bite him, though, and he frowned at it. That didn't seem right...

He took a step backwards as it opened its wings and started flapping. "What the...?" Was it trying to fly already?

Aiden watched it flap hard, lifting itself into the air clumsily, and he couldn't help feeling proud about it. Look at that! Newly hatched and already flying! When it didn't stop rising, he began to worry.

"Hey, where are you going?" he called after it. It didn't turn back and continued climbing, heading unerringly towards somewhere else. He started trotting after it. "Wait, come back!"

It didn't even look back as it picked up speed and Aiden slowed to a stop, watching it leave. That, that wasn't supposed to happen. Right...?

There was something over here, he remembered, in this forest of buildings. A young, not-Trainer human, the first one he'd seen when he first hatched. He hadn't been impressed then and he still wasn't impressed now, but something was drawing him back. Some...instinct or urge or what have you wanted him to go back and far be it for him to ignore it, but only to observe. For now. Only to observe.

Aiden tapped at the single ear cuff he'd put together since Rotom decided it'd like to try adventuring with him. Which was still absolutely wild to him. All he'd done was gotten blackmailed into leading the authorities to an underground Pokémon fighting ring and then gotten beat up and Cynthia herself had given him a Pokémon as a reward! Like how was that a thing?

Not that he wasn't grateful. Granted, he could've done with less getting beat up, but he had a Pokémon now! And it apparently didn't mind that he'd probably been breaking laws left and right to get one. Goes to show that Rotom, or, at least, this one, probably shouldn't be working for law enforcement.

There was a crackle of static as Rotom jumped from his phone to the headset masquerading as an ear cuff before the voice pattern it'd put together for itself came through, nice and clear. "Testing, testing. Aiden?"

"Read you loud and clear." Aiden grinned.

"Oh, good." It sounded relieved. "You looked like you knew what you were doing, but I couldn't be sure."

"Fair enough," he conceded. They hadn't been partners for too long, so a bit of skepticism was warranted. "How do you like it?"

It considered for a moment. "It's actually really comfy. Much better than your phone. I'm surprised."

"Yeah, well, a phone's not really built to house an entire Pokémon." Aiden started walking slowly along the path in the park. The same park where an Aerodactyl once flew away from him, mere moments after hatching. The reminder didn't hurt as much as it once had, thankfully, but it still hurt. "I did build this with you in mind."

"Thanks." He walked on quietly for a few moments, just enjoying the sun and air. "You should give me a name."

Aiden blinked. "A nickname, you mean?"

"No, a name." It sounded like it was grimacing when it continued. "I have no idea where the idea that it's a nickname came from, but it would be as if your name was Human and your nickname Aiden."

He made a face. "No, yeah. You need a name." He hummed in thought. "Have you found any you like on the Internet?"

It gave the impression it was rolling its eyes at him. "I didn't say I wanted a name. I said you should give me a name."

"Uh, you want me to name you?" Aiden asked dubiously. "You realize I'd probably give you a...well, a Pokémon name."

"That's the point," it said dryly. "If we're gonna be working together, I'd much rather you call me something you want, instead of my species. And it's not like I'd know what a good name sounds like."

Aiden considered that for a moment and then shrugged. "If you say so. I assume you'll veto anything you don't like, so...whaddya say to Hax?"

It snorted. "How old are you?"

"Hey!" He felt briefly offended, but caved with a sheepish grin. "Yeah, too much like a kid, huh?"

"Too juvenile," it agreed.

He hummed. "Hex?"

"Melissa has a Vulpix named Hex."

An idea crept up on him, but he brushed it away. If it thought Hax was too juvenile, then Hint probably wouldn't be much better. "Um...Matrix, maybe?"

"Really?"

They tried a few more computer-related names before Rotom made an exasperated noise. "Just, stop dancing around whatever it is you keep coming back to and tell me."

Aiden was taken aback. "What?"

"Your neural patterns keep looping back to something after I reject a name, so clearly you should just tell me and get it out of your system."

There was a pause. "You can read my mind?"

"If I could, I would've already told you my opinion on whatever it is you keep thinking of," it pointed out with another impression of rolling eyes. Aiden waited. After a moment, it sighed. "Not really. I'm sensitive to the electrical impulses in your brain--I have to be to possess items without frying them--and, well, I used to live at the NFPD." There was an impression of a shrug. "I spent a lot of time locked up in that Pokéball; I had to keep myself occupied somehow."

Aiden grimaced. "That sounds...pretty terrible actually."

Another shrug. "It was what it was. Not that I'd go back." It paused. "I'm glad the NFPD didn't try to arrest you for stealing me."

"Technically, Cynthia stole you from them," Aiden corrected. "But, yeah. That would've been...bad."

It snorted. "Bad," it repeated under its breath. Still audible, though, so Aiden knew he was meant to hear it. "What an understatement. But you were going to tell me what you keep thinking of."

Aiden sighed noisily. "Yeah, alright, fine. But it's probably stupid. I just thought it'd be hilarious if your name was Hint."

"Hint, hm?" There was a thoughtful note in its voice.

"Yeah, y'know. 'Hint, Charge.' 'Hint, use Thunder Shock!' 'Hint, dodge that!'" He shrugged, sheepish. It sounded so stupid when he said it aloud, but it still had him fighting a grin. The expressions on people's faces if they heard that!

"Actually...I think I like it."

He blinked. "Wait, really? You like it?"

"I do." It snickered abruptly. "Can you imagine people's faces when they hear it?"

A grin grew on his face. "Yeah. That's partly why I kept coming back to it. Just, the idea of it." There was a pause as he waited for Hint's response, brow furrowing the longer it remained silent. "Hint?"

There was an abrupt blast of wind as something large came in to land, throwing dust and debris everywhere. Aiden ducked his head and squinted, trying to spot the source. Large, winged, purple-gray... It landed and eyed him severely as he stared, arm dropping in shock. That was...

"An Aerodactyl," Hint observed. "So, that's what it feels like. What's it doing here?"

The Aerodactyl--and Aiden was almost sure it was the one he'd once hatched--approached, clumsy on land but no less menacing, eyes fixed on Aiden. Aiden could only stare as it got closer, barely hearing Hint's concerned "Aiden?"

It was almost within touching distance when Hint had enough, manifesting itself in front of Aiden with a frown and a crackle of electricity. The Aerodactyl paused, examining the Ghost for a moment, before shifting its gaze back to Aiden and opening its mouth. Hint frantically spun up a Charge, swearing to get Aiden to teach it how tactics and improvisation worked, but it needn't have bothered. The Aerodactyl took a deep breath and then shrieked a wordless challenge before taking off again. It was only once Hint saw it leave, turning from visible to silhouette to speck, that it turned back to check on Aiden.

"Aiden?" Even outside of the headset, its trainer should be able to understand it. It'd written a program to make sure of that.

"I, yeah." Aiden blinked and shook his head, turning to face Hint. "Yeah?"

It considered its trainer for a moment. There was history there, with that Aerodactyl, and it didn't doubt that Aiden would tell it if it asked. But, he still looked a bit dazed, gaze drifting to where the Aerodactyl had been before he yanked it back to Hint.

"...we should probably head back." Aiden didn't seem to understand or remember what they'd come out here for. "The headset works and your brother will be upset if you don't return soon."

Aiden blinked again and tore his gaze away from where it kept drifting, hand going up to touch the ear cuff. "Right. The headset. Mike." Turning his back to start the walk back, he visibly yanked his thoughts away from the Aerodactyl and cast about for something to talk about. "Wait, you're out? Where'd you leave from?"

"Straight from the headset. It was easy. I didn't fry it either."

"Oh. Good." Hint grimaced. There was none of the ease from earlier and it didn't know how to get it back. What could that Aerodactyl want form Aiden anyway? "Wanna try going straight into it?"

"Sure. I'd rather you took it off first, though, just in case."

Aiden quietly unhooked the ear cuff and offered it to Hint, barely flinching as the Rotom poured itself into the headset. Once his Pokémon disappeared, he hooked it back on and adjusted it until it was comfortable. "Hint?"

"I hear you."

"...thanks." For choosing me.

Aiden picks up a Thief

Hatched

“Hey. I’m back,” Aiden called out as he closed the door to the apartment.

“Hey.” Mike’s voice came from the kitchen, sounding irritated about something. “Thought we agreed you were gonna tell me when you were bringing more Pokémon back.”

“Uh, yeah?” Aiden slipped out of his shoes, dropped his keys into the bowl, and wandered towards the kitchen. “Why?”

Mike shot him a look. “Check the table.”

“Okay?” Aiden blinked at his brother, baffled, before turning around and heading for the living room. He circled around the couch and pulled up short at the sight of a normal Pokéball sitting innocently on the coffee table. “Um, what?”

“Yeah, that was my reaction when I saw it,” Mike said, sounding a lot less irritated. “So, you dunno what it’s about either?”

“No?” Aiden glanced back at the kitchen, then at the living room window, then back to the Pokéball. “What?”

“You didn’t move Hint into a less conspicuous Pokéball or something, did you?”

“No? Why would I do that?” Aiden looked at the kitchen doorway. “It’s not like we have extra Pokéballs lying around or anything.”

“I dunno. Makes more sense than just having it show up outta nowhere, though.”

“I don’t exactly have easily-accessible Trainer money, Mike,” Aiden stressed pointedly.

“Thought that was the point of the research?”

“That was before the administration changed.” He looked back at the Pokéball. Yup, still there. “Can’t exactly go skimming money when no one’s got tons of it. She’d notice.” Although, speaking of the Rotom… “Is Hint around? It didn’t say hi when I got back.”

“I…think it’s around.” He could hear Mike’s frown. “Hasn’t said much since it got back from...wherever it went.”

There was a beat.

"HINT!"

"You know, I feel like I should've figured that out earlier," Mike said idly as Aiden stormed down the hallway to his room.

"Hint! Why's there a Pokéball on the table in the living room?"

There was a brief buzzing as Hint turned on the extra monitor. "Uh, what?"

"The Pokéball. In the living room. Why's it here?"

"Uh, well..." It looked like it would be rubbing the back of its head if it had a body. "Y'know how Melissa has a Gothita who's been sneaking around behind her back?"

Something felt like it was sinking in his gut. "Yeees...?"

"Weeeell, she somehow managed to contact me and asked--" It frowned. "No, wait, told. She told me to meet her at the Hatchery and snuck us past the staff, where, apparently, she'd coordinated a breeding between Melissa's Growlithe and...someone else's Zorua because somehow she got it into her head that we're supposed to have a Zorua."

Aiden stared at it. "Are you...telling me...that there's a Zorua in the Pokéball on the table?"

Hint rolled its eyes. "I would've figured the whole Gothita-sneaking-behind-her-trainer's-back would've been more important, but yeah, there's a Zorua out there. One whose mom I promised we'd take care of it."

"And you couldn't refuse?" Aiden ran a hand through his hair. "I literally just started doing this whole thing and you know I have no idea what I'm doing."

"Honestly? I didn't wanna risk it. It would've been two of them against one of me and one of them was a Growlithe," Hint stressed. "I'm not good with improvising!"

Aiden groaned. "Yeah, I know. We'll work on that." He rubbed his face. "For now, c'mon. We should...probably explain things to Mike and figure out what we're doing with a Zorua."

He turned around and headed back to the living room, hearing Hint's buzzing follow behind him. "Mike! Hint says it's a Zorua that Melissa's Gothita arranged for me to have. Not that anyone told me about it."

"Soooo, are you keeping it? Zorua's supposed to be pretty rare, right?"

"Yeah, but...I dunno." Aiden dropped onto the sofa and eyed the Pokéball again. "I mean, I've barely had Hint a month and we haven't really done anything since the whole...NFC thing."

He considered the Pokéball for a beat.

"Melissa's Gothita promised her Growlithe that she'd see the Zorua again," Hint...hinted.

Aiden side-eyed it. "Are you guilt-tripping me?"

Hint shrugged. "I don't want either of them coming after me if anything happens to the Zorua."

"Suppose that's fair." Aiden leaned forward to release the Zorua. A Growlithe materialized on the table.

"You're cleaning that." Aiden glanced back to see Mike leaning against the doorway to the kitchen. Mike shrugged. "Your Pokémon, your mess."

Aiden rolled his eyes and turned back to the probably-Zorua-masquerading-as-a-Growlithe. "Uh, hi? Hint told me that, for whatever reason, Melissa's Gothita says you're supposed to go with me?"

They shrugged. "That's what the Gothita said. Mom wasn't happy about it, but she let me go."

Aiden paused, surprised that Hint's translation program worked with a not-Rotom Pokémon. "I'm not surprised." He sighed. "But did you want to stick with me? I'm brand new to this whole Trainer thing and I only got them"--he pointed at Hint with his thumb--"like, a month ago."

The probably-a-Zorua shrugged again and said, "Gothita said I'm supposed to be here, so I'm gonna stay."

"If you're sure..." Probably-a-Zorua sat down and gave him a stubborn look. "Now, they've"--another gesture at Hint--"got a name. Did you want one too?"

Probably-a-Zorua eyed him. "Mom's just called Growlithe."

"Well, yeah," Aiden admitted, "but calling you Zorua's prolly a bit of a give-away, yeah?"

"He means a nickname. What everyone calls a nickname," Hint clarified.

"Oh." Probably-a-Zorua glanced between Aiden and Hint for a bit. "I guess?"

"Mkay. What d'you think about--"

"Kaito." Aiden and Probably-a-Zorua stared at Hint. Hint slid in the air, clearly uncomfortable. "What?"

"Where'd you get that from?"

"What's it mean?"

"Uh, the one I'm thinking of means 'phantom thief', which is a kind of thief who steals more for the challenge and thrill than anything," Hint explained and then shrugged. "That's...kinda the theme you've got going on, right?"

"No!" Aiden paused. "Okay, maybe, but that was before the whole system changed! I haven't actually stolen anything from anyone--"

Mike coughed and pointed at Hint when Aiden turned around. "Pretty sure they count as stolen property."

"I didn't do that one!" Aiden threw his hands into the air, glaring at his brother. "That was Cynthia and they only count as stolen property in, like, the most strictly legal sense!"

"I like it," Kaito told Hint as Aiden and Mike got into an argument about what exactly counts as stolen, as property, and as stolen property.

Hint buzzed happily. "We should probably move your Pokéball to Aiden's room then, since this might take a bit and Aiden still has to clean the table."

"Kay." Kaito picked up his Pokéball in his mouth and hopped off the table to follow Hint down the hallway.

Merchant’s Market
Along the thin lanes of rustic wood cabins, lie shops full of trinkets produced by men’s talents.
An ocean of scents wafts through the air, as wise men from the east show off their wares.
Amidst all the trifles, the sparklers and doodads, lie mysterious orbs brought by these nomads.
Jewels and gems, strange rocks and glass eyes, all neatly lined up for you to ogle and buy.



Trim-a-Tree
Out by the park, trees have been gathered, all in anticipation for them to be slathered.
Tinfoil and baubles are lying in wait, to be hung from a pine by a trainer and mate.
There is no admission, no fee to pay, simply decorate a tree on this holiest of days.
Ornaments are provided by retailers from near, all free to take, so there’s nothing to fear.
When everyone’s finished and proud of their feat, the judges may pass and provide something neat.
But there’s no need to fret, no reason at all, everyone’ll receive the leftover balls.
Melissa normally wouldn't have gone back out into the snow after facing off with a manufactured blizzard in the Cloud Garden, but they'd gotten an invite to this small winter village and she'd figured it couldn't be as bad as Cloud Garden's blizzard. Of course, once she arrived, talk of a market with all kinds of glittery, shiny treasures prompted Ore to pop himself out of his Pokéball and scamper towards the shops, chittering giddily to himself.

Melissa closed her eyes and took a deep breath, exhaling noisily before trotting after her Sableye. She had a pretty good idea what Ore was up to and that wasn't what she'd planned for when she'd decided to come here. Hopefully, the shop keepers would understand when she got Ore to return their wares.

"Sorry 'bout that," she said not long after, handing the stall owner his box of Nuggets and Pearls. "He likes shiny things and treasure, but we haven't really done any spelunking ourselves yet. I've promised him a treasure-hunting trip, but this wasn't supposed to be it." She scratched the back of her head sheepishly.

The stall owner riffled through his box, likely taking an inventory to make sure they hadn't stolen anything, and then smiled up at her. "It's alright. Everything's here and we've all had that one troublesome Pokémon. Just try to keep a better eye on him, hm?"

Melissa nodded and smiled back at him before heading after Ore once again. She thought she saw him head this way, but she didn't see anyone looking either frustrated or surprised, so she could've been wrong. It didn't hurt to check, though, so she glanced at each stall she passed. Some stalls she recognized were selling hold items or items mostly traded for cash, while others sold fossils and battle items. There was even one selling evolution stones and she was a bit surprised not to find Ore there. When she arrived at the stall showing off Mega Stones, though, things made sense.

"I hope he hasn't been bothering you too much," she said as she came up behind Ore, who only glanced up at her and then turned back to the Stones he was eyeing.

"Not at all," the shopkeeper said, smiling at Melissa. "He definitely knows what he wants, though."

Melissa huffed, glancing at the Sablenite and Aggronite her Sableye was staring at. "Yeah, I can see that. I think that might actually be what he was after when he kept asking me to go treasure-hunting with him."

"Well, it probably wasn't much of a hunt, but they're available for sale if you're interested," the shopkeeper offered. Ore chittered and pointed demandingly at them.

Melissa wavered for a beat and then shook her head regretfully. "Not right now. I haven't really had a chance to look around and I didn't really budget for a shopping trip, so I think I'm gonna look around first before deciding."

Ore frowned and crossed his arms, turning his back on the stall and grumbling, while the shopkeeper nodded. "Alright. They might be gone when you come back though."

"Yeah," Melissa sighed. "Well, if it's meant to be, then they'll still be here when I get back. Thanks, though." She nodded at the shopkeeper and then turned to check out the stalls more leisurely.

When she'd taken a few steps, she paused and played a hunch, glancing over at her Sableye. "Ore, you should probably put it back before she notices. I don't want to get her mad at us and then refuse to sell them to us."

Her Sableye scowled and grumbled, turning to trudge back to the stall.

Meanwhile, a lot of Melissa's Pokémon were trying very hard to decorate a tree and...having quite a bit of trouble with it.

Cirrus, Breeze, Zephyr, and Spirit draped strings of garland, ribbons, and lights around the tree, while Vine and Caterpie hung ornaments and decorations from the branches. Hex argued with Cirrus about where things should go, while Eve quietly enlisted Annabelle and Imp's help with rearranging the decorations appropriately. Prince did his best not to look amused next to Desertsong, who didn't bother hiding her amusement as she chewed on a flavored icicle Snuffles got when he trailed Melissa and Ore. They all chittered and chattered, argued back and forth on decoration placement, discussed color coordination and patterns, and then ended up covered in glittering powder when Vivillon got tired of all the talk and got Ledyba to join her in dusting everything on, near, and around their chosen tree.

There was a moment's pause as they all blinked and/or spluttered, turning to look at Vivillon's grumpy and annoyed expression. Ledyba ducked his head sheepishly under their gazes. Coulter and Fawn drifted back to the group, the former announcing mildly that this wasn't the right tree, while the latter declared that it was fine. The noise picked up again as everyone reacted and tried to talk over each other, some moving to strip the tree as others moved to intercept them.

All in all, it was chaos and those Pokémon that opted out of the whole thing watched on in amusement from a good distance away, sipping warm drinks and huddling closer to the Fire-types among them.

Most though, merely enjoyed the scene from afar, making the display their holiday amusement as they huddled up close to the Fire-types for warmth. By the time the judges got round, they looked in small shock at the decorated tree. “Oh,” one said, “only Pokémon? Where’s your trainer.” Another judge, a somewhat old and slightly crooked man, chuckled at the disastrously, haphazardly decorated pine. “Well well,” he said. “A valiant effort, I’ll give you that.” “But sir,” one of the others protested, “you can’t really be thinking-“ “Calm down young’un, I’m not thinking anything right now.” He turns to your Pokémon. “But we have something leftover that might help. How’s about I give you some of these ornaments to hang up in your tree,” he asks them and chuckles a bit more. The judges left your Pokémon in peace afterwards to give them some more time to decorate if they so wanted to. The gift they received was a set of special Pokéballs, though with hooks attached to them so they could be hung.

Melissa...hadn't expected to receive an invite to a New Year's Celebration in New Fizz as one of the Guests of Honor, but she showed up anyway, curious and a bit bemused at being considered a guest of honor. She flashed the invite at an officer--because it didn't really tell her what to do or where to go once she got here--and he led her to a government official sitting atop a Rapidash. She accepted the official's help getting onto the Rapidash and glanced around as he steered them towards some central location. There were a few familiar faces from the fight with the giant Abomasnow riding along with other officials and the crowd glanced up at them as they passed. They were doing the same to her, but she wasn't exactly trying to think about that.

They arrived at something that was probably a plaza or gathering area, the official steering their Rapidash towards the stage. Once a good number of Rapidash were lined up, a man that she figured was the mayor climbed onto the stage and spoke to the crowd, calling the group of trainers 'heroes of this nation.' Melissa blinked and almost lost her seat when her Rapidash started moving again, staring in confusion as the mayor continued with his praises. Her? A hero? Fizzytopia's best? She wasn't so sure about that.

Not that she got a choice in the matter as the mayor started calling people up to talk about the year's memorable achievements. She tried not to pay much attention to the other trainer's memorable moments, but it was hard when she was having difficulty figuring out what she wanted to say.

By the time her name was called, she still hadn't really settled on what she wanted to say, so she mentally shrugged and figured she'd just have to wing it.

"Uh, hi." She waved and grinned a bit at the crowd. "This year has been...busy for Fizzytopia. And for me. I've finally gone to the Cloud Garden, though it's still gonna take me a while to get to the peak. I participated in the War of Roses and fought a giant Abomasnow with some of the other trainers here." She nodded at some that she recognized. "I visited the Springtide Isle and found a baby Rowlet, which was...I thnk the best thing to happen to me last year." She ducked her head and grinned sheepishly. "This year, I'm aiming to climb to the peak of the Cloud Garden and I've got...a few evolutions that should be happening soon, which will be my first evolutions since I've come to Fizzytopia. I'm hoping to pick up a Mega Stone or two and some more Z-Crystals. Aaaand, I think that's it for me." She glanced around. "Oh! And I'm hoping to open my Base to visitors this year." She grinned. "Now, I'm done."

She stepped away from the mic and headed for the Machoke to claim 18 for the raffle, before hopping off the stage and waiting somewhere...less the center of attention.

That, when we meet again here in a year’s time, we can look back and be proud of what we’ve all accomplished once more!” he says emphatically. “Let us all make the most of our newfound freedom, and aim for even greater heights – both in our personal goals, and the betterment of this land!”

Clapping his hands, the Mayor instructs the two Machoke to return to the stage to distribute gifts to every Trainer holding a ticket.

“Thank you once more for your presence. And you can start working on next year’s speech, because I expect you all to return then! Godspeed, Fizzytopians!”

Dialga's Gate Raid Event - Vs. Primal Dialga!

They didn’t expect anything to happen, when Dialga’s Gate closed. The warnings had gone out months before and, as far as they knew, everyone had made it back through. So, Melissa was ambling through her Secret Base, waiting eagerly to see what the new Zone would be, and definitely not expecting a hole to open up under her feet.

She screamed the whole short way to the ground, slamming belly first onto dusty rock. She barely had a moment to get her bearings before two somethings landed on her back, one after the other, and made her wheeze. She also ended up inhaling dust, sending her into a coughing fit, even as she tried to get to her knees.

“Quil!”

“Bone…”


Glancing up, she couldn’t see the hole she’d dropped through and a look around showed that wherever they were, it was not welcoming. As she caught her breath, she started noticing various Trainers scattered around the landscape, many familiar from the recent Raids she’d participated in. All of them seemed to have been brought here for the same reason.

Dialga, the Legendary Time Dragon, stood tall atop a ruined tower, overlooking the probable-battlefield. It’s normally-blue accents glowed like lava and something about it felt...wrong. Behind it, a black hole hung ominously in the air, with...familiar-looking, pink-and-white armor orbiting it.

There was a tug on her shirt as Layla inched closer to her, claws clutching Melissa’s shirt. Wildfire stared up at the Legend, standing firmly between Melissa and the Dragon.

“I, uh, wasn’t expecting this...” Melissa swallowed and gently untangled Layla’s claws so she could get to her feet. “But, I don’t think we can sit this one out, considering.” She huffed out an incredulous laugh.

“Quil.” Wildfire nodded firmly and stepped forward, but Melissa stopped him, frantically patting at her pockets until she pulled out her Pokédex.

“No, wait!” She flipped it open and motioned for Wildfire to come back. “Let’s, let’s make sure you’re the best choice before we leap in.”

“Quil cyndaquil?” Wildfire scowled, crossing his arms. “Cynda quil cyndaquil.” He gestured at Layla.

“Yeah, and she might be better suited for this.” Melissa tapped something on the screen of her Pokédex. “‘Weaknesses are Fighting and Ground’,” she read off, looking pointedly at her starter, who only huffed and looked away.

“Cu cubone bone cubone cu?” Layla tentatively asked.

Melissa and Wildfire stared at Layla for a moment, exchanged glances, and then Melissa shoved her hands into her pockets. She pulled out a pair of TMs and a TR from the same pocket that her Pokédex was in.

“...apparently she did.” Melissa looked at the moves in her hand, up at the glowing-lava Dialga, and then turned to Layla, face set into determined lines. “Okay, it’s your choice, Layla. Wildfire can probably handle it, but it won’t be pretty and he doesn’t have a lot of options.”

Wildfire shrugged and grimaced. “Quil cyndaquil,” he muttered.

“You’ll have...more options and you can keep normal Electric attacks from taking out teammates, but…” She sighed and crouched down. “I know you’ve only ever left the Base that one time and it really freaked you out, so if you don’t think you can handle it, we’ll manage.”

Layla glanced from Melissa to Wildfire and then slowly to the Dialga. She shivered and inched closer to Melissa before shaking her head and setting her jaw. Turning back to Melissa, she said, “Bone bone cu cubone bone.”

Melissa considered her Cubone for a moment before nodding. “In that case, I believe these are yours.” She gave Layla the TMs and TR.

When she was done, Wildfire nodded at her and patted her on the back. “Cyn da quil cynda!” He then clambered up to Melissa’s left shoulder before she straightened from her crouch.

Layla picked up her bone club and headed onto the battlefield. “Bone cu bone.”

Melissa was hoping for some kind of strategy for the first set of attacks, but it seemed like most trainers already had plans for how they wanted to start off. The Houndoom let loose a bone-chilling Howl, which sorta gave her an idea of what Prince would sound like if she ever brought him out for battle, just before a Ditto Transformed into a copy of the Dialga. She glanced in that direction as the Sound of screeching Metal pierced her ears and was not entirely surprised to find that Keith had been the one to bring the Ditto. Everyone else, though, seemed to just be throwing damaging attacks at their opponent, so she decided they might as well go along with it.

"Alright, Layla, we're gonna hit it as hard as we can with an Earth Power and then come back," Melissa told her Cubone. "Especially since we don't know how hard it's gonna hit."

"Bone." Layla nodded a bit shakily and hefted her bone club, leaping into the fray among the other Pokémon.

Melissa tracked her as long as she could and then tilted her head towards Wildfire. "What d'you think?" she murmured, gaze scanning the group for Layla.

"Quil...cyndaquil quil cynda quil," Wildfire said, just as quietly. He shifted his weight on her shoulder. "Quil cynda cyndaquil cynda quil cynda."

Melissa blew out a breath. "That's what I'm worried about."

They caught sight of Layla in a gap between Pokémon as she slammed the bone in her hand into the Earth, Power following the cracks created from other Pokémon using the same move. She darted away before the attack even landed, zigzagging in an attempt to dodge any attacks thrown her way, and arrived back near Melissa and Wildfire, panting and turning back to face Dialga.

"Nice job," Melissa told her, though none of them took their eyes off their opponent. Layla grinned and shifted her grip on her bone club.

The orange nullifying shockwave exploded out of the Dialga, canceling out all the buffs and debuffs the other Pokémon had racked up and laid down. It then literally rained fire down on Keith's Dialga and the Golisopod and followed that up with a Roar that felt like it echoed through even Time. Melissa and Layla stumbled a bit as the Dialga caused an Earthquake by stomping on the ground, but most of the energy missed them.

The three of them exchanged wide-eyed glances. Dialga's signature move and then an Earthquake hitting half the Raiders? There was a flash of red out of the corner of Melissa's eye and she turned to see the Golisopod getting recalled.

"Quil quil," Wildfire muttered, watching the same thing she was.

"And now we know." Melissa's brow furrowed as she considered their options.

Layla swallowed, her grin having dropped off when the Dialga started its Roar. "Bone bone cubone."

Melissa nodded, watching as several trainers briefly put their heads together and then split apart. She sidled over until she was close enough to overhear what they were talking about, trailed by Layla, and exchanged a look with her Cubone when they heard a need for a debuff.

"We could do it. So, Gary can Heal Pulse," she offered and was taken up on it. With a nod, the trio returned to 'their' patch of the battlefield and faced the Dialga once more. "Alright, Layla. You heard them; we're going with a Screech this time."

Layla took a breath and nodded firmly to herself. "Cu bone."

Follow up with another Earth Power (90 BP)!

Somehow Melissa almost managed to miss Keith Dynamaxing his Dialga as the Houndoom Blitzed forward in a corona of Fire, but she didn't miss the shields that came up soon after. One by one, individual shields fell as her fellow Raiders hit them, but several remained as the Dialga prepared its counterattack. Fire once again rained down from the skies, but this time, it slammed into two part-Steels, taking the Lucario out and leaving the Metagross wounded. It followed up with another Roar of Time, also hitting super-effectively on an Altaria and Flygon. A Blizzard buffeted half the Raiders and took out both of the previously-hit Dragons, while an Earthquake took out another four Raiders and hit Layla for the first time. She staggered at the power behind the attack, but recovered quickly.

"Cyn da quil," Wildfire hissed, digging his claws into Melissa's shoulder.

"Yeah. That's..." Melissa swallowed, much, much less confident after this series of attacks. "We're up to nine now and Raids usually end after, what, the number of Raiders?"

"Bone cu bone bone," Layla shifted her grip on her bone club and clearly resisted the urge to hide behind Melissa.

"Right." Melissa sucked in a deep breath. "Right, okay. Wait for the shields to fall and then we'll hit it with another Earth Power." She dropped her voice. "Not that we have anything stronger."

"Quil cyndaquil cynda," Wildfire pointed out, dry and a bit shaky.

"Unfortunately." Melissa sighed. She should probably try to balance out her team so that gaps like this didn't happen, but...to be honest, with the way Pokémon in Fizzytopia could learn any move once they got to a certain level of Bond with their trainers, she didn't really see the necessity. At least, until something like this happened. Still, it wasn't like she could do anything about it right now anyway.

With the table of bags emptied, the ringing of a bell can be heard throughout the plaza. Everyone looks towards the tree, where the tolling of a crystal bell signals the beginning of the main event. Each participant is handed a small candle by a fortune teller, before being ushered into a circle surrounding the tree. The royal court mage then announces that Vigil of Fate is about to begin. Everyone lights their candle, to varying degrees of success, simultaneously. The lights in the plaza dim to the point where only the flames could be seen. The sound of wings could be heard as the "forces of fate" blows away the flame. The lights turn back on to reveal a card in each of the participants' hands, the bag opened in front of them with their gifts.

- Rollerquaza: Go fast and scream loud! Moves that make you go fast as well as moves that create a lot of noise work best here.
"Y'know, I really wasn't looking forward to coming back here," Melissa said glumly, hugging her starter to her chest. Wildfire nodded and patted the arm she had across his stomach sympathetically. "It's not like I even remember how we got away from that dollhouse, but I really didn't want to come back."

Although, apparently, the nebulous promise of prizes could lure her back regardless. Granted, she kinda already knew that, what with the maze at the Haunted Mansion, but what a way to have it driven home.

She wound her way over to the Rollerquaza, flinching whenever she heard weird noises and curling into herself as she picked up the pace, hoping that nothing would go after her. Wildfire would pat her on the arm whenever she started squeezing him too tight, and also to remind her that he was there and able and willing to fight anything that went after her. Which helped. Somewhat.

Eventually, they made it to the Rollerquaza and Melissa stared up at the structure dubiously for a few beats. She sighed. "Well, here goes nothing."

Plucking a Pokéball off her belt, she sent Cirrus out, the Swablu alighting on her outstretched arm as she helped Wildfire up to her shoulder. "Apparently, we're trying to make a lot of noise to attract whatever Pokémon are hiding in the park, so fast and loud is the way to go with this one. I'm thinking Agility and Pursuit for speed and then Hyper Voice for noise. Especially if you can time it for when we go through the tunnel bit. Thaaaat I'm assuming we go through if it's the same Rollerquaza."

"Four's not so bad," Melissa said, shakily getting off the ride and collecting her coupons. Normally, she loved rollercoasters, but...well. Phantom Isle.

Cirrus shrugged and twittered at her, landing on her unoccupied shoulder as she turned around to track down another attraction. No, it’s not bad.

She was planning to head for the Hall of Mirrors next, since she had a pretty clear idea of what she wanted to do there, but she slowed as she spotted the Shooting Gallery. Last time she'd done a Shooting Gallery, she'd sent Vine out and he'd basically swept the entire thing. This time...well, he might do just fine, but she kinda wanted to let someone else have a try.

"Quil?" Wildfire prompted her when she'd apparently been standing still for too long.

"I'm thinking we might as well do the Shooting Gallery first, since it's apparently on the way to the Hall of Mirrors," she replied, heading towards the game.

Plucking a different Pokéball off her belt, she sent out Eve, who materialized with a shake of her head and a chirpy "Vee!"

"You wanna try a Shooting Gallery, Eve?" Melissa asked, nodding at the game.

Eve considered it for a moment and then hopped up to the counter. "Vee!"

"Alright. First, though, here's a few Rare Candies. And then I'm gonna want you to use Laser Focus, Focus Energy, and then Swift on those targets." Melissa pointed them out for her.

Eve eyed the targets as she ate the Rare Candies and then nodded firmly at Melissa. She braced herself and let loose.

As the ticket booth spit out its fifth ticket, Melissa's three Pokémon burst into celebration, congratulating Eve for her sharp shooting. Melissa pocketed the tickets and then scooped up her Eevee, giving her a tight hug and praise. "Nice job, Eve!"

"Vee eevee," Eve replied, ducking her head. "Vee eevee eevee."

"Still." She set Eve back down and then led the way towards the Hall of Mirrors. "It looks impressive. And it's not like you didn't try."

"Vee," Eve admitted.

The small group wound their way over to the Hall of Mirrors, chattering quietly to try to fend off the atmosphere. Melissa appreciated her team's attempt to set her at ease, but, as they came up to the next attraction, she figured it was probably a better idea to bring just about everyone else back; she didn't need half of the group to get lost in the maze when they took a left when they should've taken a right.

They slowed to a stop before the Hall of Mirrors. "Alright," Melissa sighed, sizing the place up. "Cirrus, Eve, you guys should probably return."

Eve nodded and Cirrus shrugged, but they both returned themselves. Melissa then plucked her third Pokéball off her belt and sent out her Sableye. Ore materialized with a chitter, glancing around curiously at their surroundings.

"It's a maze of illusions," Melissa said, nodding at the entrance to the Hall of Mirrors. "So, I'm thinking Foresight, Detect and then Nasty Plot."

Ore chittered a hopeful question.

"Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure there's no treasure at the end of this one," Melissa answered. "But there might be some once we've done all six."

Ore considered his trainer thoughtfully, before nodding firmly at her and turning to lead the way through the Hall.

"Well, I doubt we'll get lost, at least," she said wryly to Wildfire's quiet agreement as they followed the Sableye into the maze.

Ore swiftly led them through the labyrinth of mirrors, stopping every so often to recollect his trainer when the mirrors managed to confuse her. When they emerged from the Hall, he immediately scampered over to the ticket booth to collect the tickets it spat out while Melissa and Wildfire readjusted to their non-mirrored surroundings.

"Quil cyndaquil," Wildfire said.

"Yeah, but only 'cause Ore kept coming back for us." Melissa shook her head and headed over to where Ore was examining the tickets curiously.

The Sableye looked up at her and chattered a question.

"I think we're collecting them to exchange for prizes after we go through all the attractions," she answered, taking the tickets from him to put with the others.

He tilted his head back as he tapped thoughtfully at his chin and then chattered at her again.

"I don't think we get to know until everyone's done."

Ore crossed his arms and grumbled, following after her as she headed for the Hammer Game.

"Well, I dunno about that, but I'm glad that's not my responsibility," Melissa said as they came up to the Hammer Game. She tapped at her belt for a few moments while Ore poked at the attraction; Wildfire warned him off and the Sableye wandered off to a nearby defunct game. Melissa nodded to herself and sent out her Cubone, Layla immediately curling close when she noticed their surroundings. "Hey, it's alright, Layla." Melissa crouched down so she was closer to her Cubone. "We should be pretty safe here and Wildfire and Ore will stick around. I just need you to Focus your Energy and then use a Focus Punch to hit that pad with all your Strength, okay? You can return afterwards."

Layla peered around until she'd spotted both Wildfire and Ore nearby and then cautiously nodded at Melissa. She limbered up a little as she stepped up to the game and let out a deep breath as she prepared to give it a shot.

Layla slammed two hits to the Hammer Game pad in quick succession, but she didn't quite manage to make the bell ring. Not that it seemed to matter to the Cubone because the moment her second hit landed, she spun on her heel and hurried back to grab Melissa's leg.

Melissa rubbed her head reassuringly. "Damn. Didn't quite manage to hit the bell, but it's alright. Nice job, Layla." The Cubone's grip tightened and Melissa huffed. "Back you go." She returned her Cubone with a quiet mutter of "Lucky you."

"Quil cyndaquil cynda cyndaquil quil cynda," Wildfire said as Melissa tracked down where Ore had gone.

"Right. And I'm thinking the Circus Tent first." She peered behind the counter of the abandoned game she'd last seen Ore investigating, only to let out a short shriek and almost topple over when the Sableye poked her from behind. "You're the fucking worst," she told him as he snickered at her, motioning for her to follow him to the Circus Tent. At least when they reached the next activity, her heartbeat had almost gone back to normal.

Eyeing the obstacle course she found in the tent, Melissa tugged a different Pokéball off her belt and sent out her Fletchling. She then pointed up at the course with a wry grin. "I'm thinking this might be a good way to show off your Agility, Acrobatics, and just why you're the Aerial Ace on this team, Zephyr."

Zephyr eyed the course, chirped her confident agreement, and took off.

Zephyr swooped and dove, twisting and turning as she navigated the obstacle course with ease. She ended with a twirl, zipping past the goal before flaring her wings and circling down in a lazy spiral. Wildfire and Melissa clapped for her, while Ore darted over to the ticket booth currently printing out their coupons.

"Nice job, Zephyr," Melissa said, raising her arm so Zephyr could land on it. "Amazing flying." She scritched Zephyr's head, the Fletchling chirping her agreement.

"Cyndaquil cynda," Wildfire suggested, which had Zephyr straightening up and whistling excitedly.

"Sounds like a plan." Melissa accepted the Carnival Coupons from her Sableye and then led the way out of the Circus Tent. "Alright, last one is...Sideshow Alley, I believe." The most difficult one, in her opinion, which was why she'd left it for last.

They reached a relatively empty spot along the path with enough space for a routine and then paused as Melissa wracked her head for ideas. She'd overheard that some good moves for this activity included some kind of method of attracting attention, like Follow Me or Sweet Scent, and then moves of escalating intensity. So...maybe ending with a Z crystal move? Maybe Bloom Doom, if someone on her team had Sweet Scent? She pulled out her Pokédex to check. Nope, apparently none of her Pokémon had Sweet Scent. Huh.

Welp. Can't be helped. Might as well go for the fire-themed one then.

She shrugged the shoulder Wildfire had been using as a perch. "Well, guess you're up, buddy."

Wildfire leaped to the ground, tilting his head to the side as he looked up at her. "Quil?"

"Start off with several Flame Bursts aimed up--like fireworks?--to attract attention. Then Fire Blast and round it off with Eruption."

Wildfire glanced dubiously at the ground and then at their surroundings. "Quil quil?"

Melissa shrugged and started backing up. "We'll find out in a sec, right?"

Wildfire sighed and turned to trot to the center of their makeshift stage. She couldn't say he hadn't tried to warn her.

Aiden finds a Bug

"Alright, Hint, Charge and then Shock Wave," Aiden said.

Hint Charged, watching Kaito duplicate himself with Double Team. Thankfully, Aiden'd ordered an attack that didn't miss, so Hint had no qualms about just releasing the Shock Wave at its teammate. There was a glint of light as Kaito Detected the attack and the Zorua leaped over the Shock Wave as it passed, his Double Team copies puffing into smoke. He Double Teamed again as he darted up to Hint, Leering as he got into the Rotom's face, only to take a Signal Beam to the face.

"Nice!" Aiden cheered, both at the hit and at Hint's initiative, while Kaito picked himself out of the dirt. "You good, Kaito?"

"Yeah. I'm done, though," he said as he shook his coat out and stretched. "This is no fun when I can't hit you properly."

"That's fair," Hint conceded, drifting over to its teammate. "I'd be much more annoyed, so thanks for letting us practice against you."

He shrugged, pulling his Illusion back up. "Well, we're teammates, aren't we? That's what a trainer and his Pokémon do: they train together."

Aiden shoved his hands into his pockets and paced them as the trio started heading home. "Still, I should see about getting you some TMs or something, so you can actually hit back. Hint needs dodging practice, too."

"Thanks," the Rotom replied dryly as Kaito smirked.

He opened his mouth to respond to his teammate when a Leech Life pricked his side. He yelped, his Illusion shattering once again. "Ow!"

"Kaito?"

"Kaito?"

Aiden and Hint both snapped their gazes to their teammate, who looked pained and somewhat baffled. "What's wrong?"

"I dunno." He blinked, trying to peer at his side. "I think someone Leech Lifed me, but--ayp!" He jumped, yipping in pain and shock as another Leech Life pricked his side. "Ow! Owowowowow!" He spun in a circle, trying to bite at his side. "Ge' i' off me! Get it off!"

Aiden tried to pick Kaito up, but the Zorua was spinning back and forth too fast for him to get a grip. He then tried to just get his fingers into the side Kaito kept trying to bite, only to snatch his hand back with a yelp as whatever it was shocked him. "Ow! I think it's a Pokémon!"

"It Leech Lifed me, of course it's a Pokémon," Kaito snapped back, yipping again as another Leech Life landed.

"Wait, I think I've got it," Hint said, electricity crackling around it. "Try to hold still for a moment."

Kaito immediately stopped, trembling as he waited for Hint to catch whatever it was. He flinched again before Hint was ready, but the Rotom managed to scoop the culprit up in an Electroweb and pull it off the Zorua.

"Got it," it said grimly, pulling the Electroweb closer to itself.

"Aiden," Kaito whined, turning so his side was accessible.

Aiden crouched down, so he could scratch Kaito's side and smooth the fur out. "So...what is it?"

Hint peered into the Electroweb pocket. "Looks like a Joltik."

"Huh." Aiden ran his fingers through Kaito's side as the Zorua sighed in relief. "What's it eat? Blood?"

Kaito scrunched up his face. "That's gross."

Hint coughed, sloppily hiding a grin. "Electricity, actually. I'm guessing it was attracted to our battle and ended up climbing Kaito when he couldn't get at me in the hopes that he'd be able to find some more electricity."

Aiden hummed. "So, what should we do with it? I mean, wild Pokémon, it should know how to fend for itself, right?"

Hint wavered in the air. "Well..."

"It feeds off electricity and sorta goes dormant if it can't find any," Kaito said, pulling away from Aiden's fingers to shake his coat out again. "Thanks, that was nice. Anyway, it might have decided that it likes us, since you've got a Rotom and all, and it might follow us home."

"In which case he'd go after the cables," Hint finished.

Aiden made a face. "Can't we dump it somewhere else? It's a big enough city; it can't possibly track us down from wherever, can it?"

"Well...no, but if you want to let it go, you might wanna hear what it's saying at the moment." Hint unwrapped the Eletroweb pocket just enough that the earcuff could pick up the Joltik.

"--want a trainer! They're supposed to be good at teaching you moves and strategy and tactics and how to fight and help you evolve faster and, hey! Hey, Rotom! That's your trainer, right? Can you ask him if I can join? He's got you and a Zorua already, but he's got room for one more, right?"

Aiden stared. "Has he been going on this whole time?"

Hint and Kaito both nodded. "He started when Hint picked him up and hasn't really stopped since." Kaito grimaced.

"I wouldn't mind, by the way, if you went with his suggestion." Hint shrugged. "You'll need another Electric-type if you want me to hide most of the time and a non-Ghost would let Kaito get some practice in until he learns something that can damage me."

Kaito gaped. "But a Bug? His tiny Leech Life already hurt super bad and you want him on our team?"

Hint shrugged again. "Aiden needs the variety and it's small enough to fit in the apartment. And I can keep it energized, so it doesn't go after the TV and computers."

"Don't I get a say in this?" Aiden asked plaintively, only to be ignored.

Kaito wrinkled his snout before tossing his head. "Fine, whatever. As long as he doesn't go after me again unless I know he's coming."

"Yay!" came the tiny voice from the Electroweb pocket. "I promise I won't, Zorua! You guys are the best! Where's the Pokéball?"

Hint hacked one from Melissa's stash and dropped it into Aiden's hand. Aiden hefted it and glanced between his Pokémon. "You guys are sure I should get him? I mean, level of experience, number of Pokémon. Seems a bit lopsided to me."

Hint rolled his eyes. "Just catch him."

"Alright." Aiden tossed the Pokéball at the Joltik, Hint dissolving the Electroweb so as not to short-circuit it before it did its job, and the Joltik just about leaped up to meet it. He disappeared into the Pokéball and it dropped to the ground, shaking once before it clicked. Aiden picked it up and sent his newest Pokémon out.

"Oh, wow! It doesn't really feel any different, huh?" the Joltik said when it was solid again.

"Not really," Kaito said, skirting around until he was on the other side of Aiden from him.

Thankfully, the Joltik turned to Aiden next. "So, what are you gonna call me? The Rotom's Hint and the Zorua's Kaito, I get a name, too, right?"

"Uh, yeah, 'course." Aiden stuck his hand out and the Joltik skittered backwards before eyeing his hand. "How's Spark sound?"

"No go." Hint shook its head. "That's a move."

"Oh. Uh, how 'bout Zap?"

The Joltik shook its head and then skittered into Aiden's hand. "I don't like it."

Aiden hummed. "Okay, how 'bout--"

"Taser," Kaito deadpanned. "Tase for short."

"Uh, I don't think--"

"I like it!" the Joltik interrupted brightly, skittering in a circle and then up Aiden's arm.

Aiden threw up his unoccupied arm. "What do you guys even need me for, if you're all gonna name yourselves?"

"Legitimacy," Hint deadpanned, followed by Kaito saying, "To get the good food." There was a pause before it and Kaito broke out into snickers.

"Wow, I see how much you guys love me." Aiden crossed his arms and tilted his chin up, turning away from his Pokémon while fighting off a grin.

"Am I not supposed to like my name?" Tase tilted his entire body to one side.

"Oh." Aiden blinked. "Uh, I mean, if you like Tase, then Tase is fine. I was just kidding."

"Oh, okay!" Tase chirped. "Where were you guys going?"

Aiden paused and then groaned, dropping his head into his hands. "I forgot I'd have to explain this all to Mike."

Kaito pressed up against his leg, pulling his Illusion back up, while Hint made sympathetic noises.

"Who's Mike?" Tase asked, skittering across Aiden's shoulders.

"Aiden's brother," Hint answered. "He and Aiden share an apartment."

"Which means we share an apartment," Kaito added dryly. "So, don't go after the cables in the apartment unless you want Aiden's brother to get mad at him."

"Please," Aiden said, slightly muffled by his hands.

"Okay." Tase blinked, somewhat alarmed. "Besides, I have Hint. It's much better than the house cables."

"Great," Hint said as Aiden pulled out his phone.

"Hey, Mike? I'm really sorry about the short notice, but I'm coming home with a new Pokémon." He paused. "It's really small, so you don't have to worry about space, but it's, um, how about you just look it up yourself?"
