But really, the show became a piece of shit when they dumbed the fighting down to child level, removed core plot elements and devices, made too many movies, and continue to drag it on with really no direction. Ash should be like between 18 and 21 now, and yet they have kept him at the same... Fuck, this is pointless. Anyhow, I liked UPN as a site until it stopped being updated, but yeah the forums should never die, thanks

So is anybody still thinking something wiki-based? Wikis are the future! Non-wikia related wiki's, that is :\

We had a wiki. It was full of junk. Although I wish I had the old wiki to get some of the data I left on it.

The wiki was my baby. I was the only person who ever loved it.

Fanwork ftw. It's really the only way we're ever actually going to be able to grow as a community. We all know slowly dragging in PASBL and FBers from SPPf isn't going to give us much of a membership. Some people have a bit of influence in the fanwork sections (read as: I_D and Chozo), but that isn't going to be enough. What we need to do is advertise. Even though the very thought makes me want throw up, Hana is going to have to post her sprite comic here and at SPPf, I_D will need to create a shop here and link to it (possibly offering special offers for those who post here), I'll post UPN links in my fanfic, and Chozo can make a thread about UPN in the Author's Cafe subsection of the fanfic forum. Putting UPN out there in the fanwork sections of SPPf is the only way we can expand. I mean, we're practically made to specialize in fanwork. We have several good artists (read as: Hana), and you have to be a good writer to ref or update. Sure, we'll get trolls and stupid people, but that's something we have to go through to grow as a Pokemon community. There should be a main website with updates on the website and maybe a featured member of the month and a fic/art archive. We also need to take a clue from SPPf in organizing our general forums and forums we can add. We may all hate SPPf, but it's very successful as a whole and there's many things we can learn from it.

This is a serious question without any ironic anythings.
What are the main +'s with expanding?

We will be famous on the internets and be able to have more people to talk to.
We're all kinda bored of having just this tight-knit community based around the FB and ASB, I guess. |

Who's we? Most veterans seem opposed to the idea, and I personally do my poke-socialising on other forums. And whilst fanwork sections may sound like a good idea in hindsight, what makes you think people will use it over deviant art? I also don't like how it's something UPN wasn't designed for, and very few of us specialise, or even take an interest in. I would feel more confident if any new changes where being made in the existing communities interest, rather than just some random idea which may or may not attract some activity which wouldn't make a difference in my book because I don't care about other people's fanwork. Like I said, you can do what you want, just be sure it's for the right reasons.

^Then why don't you just stay out of the fan art section?
I vote for fan art section. I don't fail quite as badly at drawing and spriting as I do at other things, and I've gotten rather good at criticizing other peoples art work. Besides, I drove off all of SPPf's harsh critics when I was a n0ob, and now that I realize I need them... well, there aren't any around. Besides, I've never seen Chozo and Hana's artwork (Outside of comics), and I rather want to see them. So there. |

Jumpluff sez: LOOK MA NO BACKGROUNDS
>I rather want to see them. So there.
I haven't done much Pokemon fanart in a good while so these pieces are anywhere from six months to a year old, but what the hey. Personally, I don't think my fanart's good enough to gain the distinction that Reed has with his fanfic (just to throw out an example, in before lol what distinction), but that's just me. Would probably stand a better chance with ABL; she does fanart too. Maybe I can lure them in by doing more drawings of hawt bishy Pokemorphs and memes, though. tungsten

And I'm really not sure what you mean by "most veterans". If you're referring to FB veterans, I'm not really sure that's all that fair, considering most current FB members rarely venture outside of their forums. It's hard for me to consider them part of the community when they hardly participate. From what I can tell, a lot of the loyal forum members have voiced an opinion for change (not necessarily for a fan-art focus, but a fair few have supported it). I'm sure that we're not going to be able to compete directly with dA, and none of us are saying we should. However, it's a totally different monster. dA has a bit of a tendency to attract not the most favorable of folk, and oftentimes, the environment isn't terribly social. It's mostly a forum for displaying art and getting feedback; it's not really set up for discussion or critique (unless you pay, that is). If we offer a more fanwork-oriented site, we can offer a small community feel that big sites like dA just can't. UPN was designed for something that we can't keep up with anymore. In a fandom dominated by Bulbaguarden and Serebii, we would definitely b the odd man out. We don't have the resources to keep up with our original purpose, providing Pokemon news. Ever since we fell out of the spotlight, we've just been sitting here quietly, maintained by a few lingering members and a couple RPs that we host. Shifting into a niche position is probably our best option, and I don't know what community you're referring to, but from what I can see here, there seems to be pretty good support for some sort of fanworks section at the very least. I dunno about you, but I would like somewhere to show my fanfiction or the like without being swamped (i.e. at SPPf) or unable to really find people to read it (i.e. dA). |

I can't speak for everyone who has a DA account and posts on any of the active Pokemon forums, so this is purely anecdotal evidence and will likely not help any arguments here, buuuuut.... I have a DeviantArt account myself, and I know I've posted a lot of my stuff on BMGf's Fanart board, posted my stuff on UPN's Fanart board when it had one, and posted some stuff at PokeCommunity and SPPf. In my case, I wanted to get some thoughts on it there because I know very few people, if any, look at my DA gallery. In DA I'm about the tiniest fish ever in a giant pond and unlikely to get much notice unless I have totally awesome and/or appealing fanart or network more, whereas it's smaller there and I'm more likely to get some feedback. So I don't really think it would be a matter of trying to compete with DA. I'd love to help out with a Fanart forum if we decide to go that route. I personally think it's at least worth a shot, and if it fails I don't see us losing much. I'd totally post my fanart stuff here, and I feel more critique-y lately. :3 Edit: Aye, I go back and find Jeri has phrased it about ten times better than I could. ;;

Jeri, there’s a fine line between pessimism and an opinion. I’m just expressing my opinion, and it just so happens that I dislike the idea of changing UPN into a fanart/fanfiction site :o I don’t like the whole business conference vibe being thrown around either if I’m honest, members for the sake of members seems pointless. Sure, if there are people passionate about showing off their fanfiction and art, then this change would be a good thing, but when has anyone bothered to post their own art and stories in the Misc?
I don’t want UPN to die, I mentioned the wiki thing, and my opinion on the fan-content thing, so there’s my input. Edit Well Hana's done a good job at proving me wrong, so nvm :x Just so long as people don't think I'm some whiny bastard for having my own opinions..

It's the yearly visit!

I’m unsure as to basing the whole forum around fanfiction/fanart, but as said before by some people (I’m not sure who exactly), it wouldn’t hurt to have the sections exist. Now, my life’s dream is to be an author, but I’m not really very good at writing yet. I’ve written stuff, but serebii has a lot of harsh reviewers (See: Yami Ryu), and while I can see she has good advice, I don’t like the whole I hate your guts out way she types it. Somewhere where I can post some fanfiction, not be flamed at, and get good advice for how to start improving myself would be brilliant, and this forum would be perfect for that in my opinion.
If not, I’m perfectly content with PASBL and FB anyway, but it would still be nice to have a fanfiction/fanart section of some sort. Last edited by Handymankg2; 02-28-2010 at 01:00 PM. |

Yami Ron is the guy with 'I play male kadabra in attack mode!'. Yer, just thought I'd point that out. |
