Well, colour me surprised.

I think a lot of people raised eyebrows at how "進撃の巨人" got translated by original author Hajime Ishiyama as "Attack on Titan". It's probably closer "Attack of the Titans", no? "attack on" implies someone is attacking the titans, while "shingeki no kyojin" implies the opposite.

Turns out both titles are supposed to go together, like those old Rocky & Bullwinkle episodes with alternate titles. It's meant to imply both an attack of and attack against, or the attack and counter-attack. Apparently this is made reference to in Guren no Yumiya.

進撃 means a military advance or charge. The title 進撃の巨人 would therefore read "The Titan of the Charge" / "Titans of the Advance" / etc. It's vague as to whether the titan should be plural or singular case, as is typical with Japanese.

Your theory is the first I've ever heard of someone saying that both the English and Japanese titles are equally legitimate and go together to paint the full picture. What I have heard before, and I think this is likelier correct, is that the original title is deliberately ambiguous:

(Unavoidable spoilers through the two-thirds point. Don't bother clicking if you're not far enough to know what I'm referencing when I mention a huge expanse of grass with horses heading towards a forest.)

Spoiler: show
  • Is 巨人 titans plural and the 進撃 advance refers to their advance on Eren's city-state?
  • Is 巨人 titan singular and it refers to the titan employed by humanity who leads the charge / counterattack against the invading giants?
  • Or is 巨人 titans plural but refers not to the invading giants but to the several titans that are currently or will soon be employed by humanity to lead the charge / counterattack?

Either way, 進撃 doesn't strictly translate to "attack" or "counterattack". (The related term 反撃 hangeki is "counterattack.") And no matter what anyone tells me, the English title "Attack on Titan" totally sounds like it's suggesting an attack on the largest moon of Saturn. For it to be the Greek godlike entity or for it to be a generic giant, it would require some article, whether it be "a" or "the." So no matter the explanation, "Attack on Titan" is a stupid title and I hate it.

Doesn't a lot of anime titles have a vague translations. Like Neon Genesis Evangelion's original Japanese title is 新世紀エヴァンゲリオン or 'Shin Seiki Evangerion' which translated to 'Gospel of the New Century'. Aside from the Evangelions being neon colored, not sure how there can be a Neon Genesis.

Why are Mikasa and Levi the best fighters in Shingeki no Kyojin?

Spoiler: show
It's in their blood.

Levi is Mikasa's uncle.

Thought spoiler was safe for me to click, having seen the entire anime.

Was not.

Don't care this time though because it's Shingeki no Kyojin.

That's actually a conclusion I jumped to, although the ground-work has been set to confirm it either way.

It's funny though. SnK is set in a vague Europe-like universe, with a lot of blonde-haired, blue-eyed folks walking around, but it's the Asians who are the master race!

To be fair ...

(Doppel's spoiler; don't click if you're not caught up with the manga)

Spoiler: show
Levi can be her uncle without anything major having to change.

First, they can be the same age. Mikasa's father is Levi's older brother, say. He was 24 when Levi was born to their mother of 48. That same year Mikasa's father impregnates her mother; she's born nine months later.

Second, because of such an enormous age gap, Levi might have had more of an uncle-nephew relationship with his brother than a brother-brother relationship. Levi would have thus been more like a cousin to Mikasa than an uncle.

Third, it's conceivable that Levi and Mikasa never met before. I have extended family I've never met before. (Though not first cousins. I've met all of those.) It can happen.

Really, the only major hangups I have with it are 1) why Levi's name isn't Ackerman (assuming he's Mikasa's dad's brother and not Mikasa's mom's brother) and 2) why he never broached the subject with Mikasa as the name "Mikasa" is sure to be unique in their Germanic society; surely he'd have heard it before in conversations about his brother's family.

If it's revealed that Levi is related to Mikasa through the mom's side, as Doppel seems to be implying with his master race talk, I guess I'd cry foul that Levi doesn't look the least bit Asian. But again, it can happen. Not all half-Asian babies look Asian.

The mangaka has stated various times that Levi is "surprisingly old" (totally refusing to reveal anything about his age otherwise).

And I looked into this matter: unless Dopple's got some serious connections, the info comes from a /a/ leak.

Spoiler: show
A page in Chapter 56 apparently reveals Levi's full, real name to be Levi Ackerman. It could be a lie and related to something else or something though. And this is some thugs talking about captain Levi Ackerman, with these people apparently tying in to Levi's past as a criminal (and part of a group that used the 3D Maneuver Gear to commit crimes) before he was scouted by Erwin.

Lemme just point out...

Spoiler: show
How the fuck is Ackerman a Japanese last name? It's not even remotely Asian. It's a common Jewish surname, not even remotely oriental, let alone Japanese.

If you saw Doppel's spoiler you can read this one.

According to people on YouTube, the Ashly Burch from the YouTube series Hey, Ash! Whatcha Playin'? is providing the voice for Sasha in the English dub.

Oh you guys.

So the internet appears to be conspiring to make me watch this show, and it seems that the dub has just started airing. Worth catching the dub, bearing in mind that I find it hard to concentrate on subs? My brain is not wired to multitask.

(first foray into the Anime forum wooooo!)

Gamagoori tends to vary in size throughout Kill la Kill. In some instances, he's just big:

And then he's very big:

That first image up there sort of takes it "Up To Eleven".

Anyhoo, I really should start reading SNK again once exams are over. I sort of put it down some time ago and forgot about it.

The trailer for the Attack on Titan live-action movie was recently released for North American audiences. That's right: Attack on Titan is coming to American theaters this fall.

I was wondering how they were possibly going to cram all of Season 1 into just one movie. Turns out they're not. It looks like there will be two movies, a Part 1 and a Part 2, and so that should give them between 4 and 5 hours to work with. If you assume your average anime episode is about 20 minutes long (once you take out the OP, the ED, the sneak peek, and of course commercial breaks), this means that they should be able to get about 12 to 15 episodes' worth of uncompressed content into the two films. Which means it'll either be uncompressed and take us to the introduction of:

Spoiler: show
the female Titan

or else it'll be compressed and take us to the end of Season 1. Or heck: I suppose it could always go past where Season 1 ended! But if it did, I don't think it could go much farther: the final script would've had to have been locked in no later than some time last year.

Personal thoughts below. Spoilers based entirely on the trailer and compared against what we saw in S1, but nothing more than that.

Spoiler: show
Of course I wasn't a big fan of Shingeki no Kyojin. I thought it had a good start, and then I thought the show went to shit from like Episode 06 onward. I was one of the more disappointed posters back in 2013, and there were a lot of you who really quite loved the story. Some of you loved it so much you even went on to catch up with the manga! But then some of you who did that ... reported back to us that the manga got retarded later on too. ^^;; So I dunno what to say, other than "I am not a big fan of Shingeki no Kyojin and so this movie's obviously not for me."

That stated, even if I loved Attack on Titan, I'd have to say that this movie still looks disappointing. ^^;
  • The reasons for an all-Japanese cast are obvious, but at the same time conflict with Attack on Titan's setting and cast of characters. In a world where Mikasa is supposed to be one of only very few Asians remaining, suddenly everyone's Asian.
  • While most characters retain their foreign-sounding names, for some reason Levi was morphed into Japanese-sounding Shikishima. No idea why. People say it's because "Levi" was too hard to pronounce in Japanese but ffs that can't be the reason why.
  • Film looks a little too gray. I realize it's a drab city, but it almost comes across as looking metallic / steely rather than Medieval earthy 'n' stony. It looks too dark even when it's supposed to be daytime.
  • Trailer suggests compression. I didn't know there were two films when I first saw the trailer, so I'm a little less worried now than I was then, but even still: I worry that if the first film ends at the part where Eren joins the one military branch (the trailer shows the candlelight ceremony thing) then that means they're compressing a hell of a lot of material into just one film.
  • Trailer suggests the filmmakers lost the forest for the trees. The film looks like it cares too much about the Titans and not enough about the humans and their drama. But that was the entire point about Shingeki no Kyojin: the Titans could've been anything -- they were just the macguffin necessary to get us interested in the drama between Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Levi, etc. While the story has always had action in it, it never felt to me to be a "summer blockbuster action flick" the way that this film looks.
  • Typical B-grade acting in an anime-turned-film film. :\
I dunno. Hopefully for those of you who love Shingeki no Kyojin, I am wrong for you and when you watch the movie you will love it.

I hope that the movie screens at a theater near you for those of you who really would like to see this in theaters. Please do and let us know how your experience went! I hope you have a great time if you do decide to go.

I haven't read the Junior High manga, but the anime so far is a pretty cute derpy fun change of pace.

Also, surprised the season 2 preview leak hasn't been posted here yet. Can't wait to see more badassery from Hanji this season.
