"I'm sorry to hear that," Amelie says, and though her tone is lilting and a bit distant, she does seem sincere. she continues the slow ascent up the hill, towards the house at the top, where you can see lights burning in some of the windows. As you walk, she continues her thoughts on the matter of love and loss, which prove to be rather nihilistic for such a young woman.

"I think," she begins, waving a gloved hand through the cold air. "Love is merely a fool's errand, anyway, Mr. Balmund, and I would think you and I are better off without it. Isn't that right, Yuki?"

Yuki giggles again, in her typical, eerie way, and drapes herself across the shoulders of her mistress, as if to soothe -- or perhaps claim for herself -- the broken maiden. Amelie layers a hand over one of Yuki's, and nuzzles the ghostly creature fondly. Her boots click on the porch steps as she makes her way up onto the sprawling deck, and for the first time you realize just how magnificent the house really is; her family must be well-to-do. Reaching for the doorknob, she looks back to her, and there is sadness in her eyes.

"No human has ever loved me for the person I am, Mr. Balmund," she says, gravely. Then the latch clicks, and you walk inside.

The first sensation which strikes you is warmth; sweet warmth. The furnace rumbles audibly in the basement, it's song echoing through the pipes and filling the house with it's sweet embrace. You can hear the clatter of cooking utensils coming from another room off of the den, which you have entered into, and after a beat a woman's voice can be heard over the din.

"Amelie, darling, is that you? I hadn't realized you had gone out," the voice coos. Amelie sighs.

"Yes, mama," she replies, as she removes her coat and hangs it on a hook by the door. The sound of tiny footsteps distracts you from Amelie, however, as a Smoochum comes running into the den, colliding happily with Amelie's calf. Amelie laughs, and kneels to give the little Ice-type a hug.

"Hello, Mimi," she greets, fondly. From her crouched position, she looks up at you, and for a moment she does look happy, evidently enjoying the company of Pokémon. "This is my mother's Pokémon, Mimi."

Amelie stands, and Mimi takes hold of the hem of her skirt, seemingly equally as fond, and guides you into the kitchen, where a woman who looks a great deal like herself -- albeit older -- is cooking eggs. There are already pancakes stacked on a tray, ready to be served, and freshly fried strips of bacon draining on a paper towel. Amelie clears her throat.

"Mama, I've brought a friend for breakfast."

Amelie's mother looks up, and for a moment her demeanor seems pleasant, but then she frowns, at roughly the instance she takes note of Iskra. She exhales through her nose, and turns back to her eggs, with an air that suggests she isn't pleased and a tone that cements it.

"You know your father likes it quiet in the morning," she clucks, in a way that suggests there's more to this than the suspicion you'll be a disruption. She casts a strange, almost pointed look at Yuki, and sets down her spatula, before picking up the tray of flapjacks and placing them in her daughter's hands. "Go. Set the table. Your father and brother will be down soon. And for goodness sake, keep that thing on its best behavior, won't you?"

Amelia frowns, but takes the tray, and turns towards the archway that joins the kitchen to the dining room, Yuki in tow. Mimi has fallen behind to stay with her trainer, sensing the tension. What will you do?
Several things stood out to Duke since the last exchange. Most telling of all, was the obvious disdain Amelie's mother held towards both Yuki and Iskra, both Ghost-types towards which Amelie
had already admitted fondness for herself. It wouldn't be unreasonable to thus assume this would be a source of strife within the family. Perhaps, in some way, this too is connected with her eventual demise? He would need to see how both her father and brother would interact later on to ascertain his supposition.

There is, however, something else worthy of note, and perhaps this is something too insignificant, but still quite odd given the stature and wealth of Amelie's family: her mother did not seem to acknowledge him. Even if Iskra was a factor, one would think a woman of her social stature would at least provide some salutations and ask Duke a question or two, if only out of a minimal sense of etiquette and courtesy alone. Not that he was offended by this, but he couldn't help feeling how awkward the situation had become. Nonetheless, he decides to address her mother before following Amelie towards the dining table.

"Worry not ma'am, the thing will be on its best behavior." He bowed and nodded slightly, maintaining a courteous facade as he made use of her own choice of words. He didn't mean to sound passive-aggressive, although he couldn't keep himself from that inflection escaping his control. While he believed fighting over choice of pronouns to be pointless, he couldn't avoid the emotional response it invoked. Iskra likely didn't care herself. After all, she is a doll.

"I thank you most kindly for your hospitality." He then concluded, hoping to be on his way to some delicious breakfast.

Balmund:
Amelie's mother hardly acknowledges you as you speak, making only a noise in her throat at your comment. As she shifts eggs from a pan onto a plate, you realize how tired she looks, and just how much that weariness mirrors Amelie's; whatever it is that burdens this family, it seems to take its toll quite heavily on the women.

Joining Amelie in the dining room, you find her setting the table. The china is spotless and the silverware pristine; the tray of flapjacks is set in the ceter of the table next to a glass bottle of dark maple syrup. Footsteps from somewhere down the hall echo and grow louder, signalling the descent of someone -- no, two someones -- down a flight of stairs. A few moments later a stocky gentleman in a woolen suit and a string tie enters the dining room, followed by a teenage boy in slacks and a salmon-colored sweater. The man looks at Amelie and then to you, frowning as he picks up a cloth napkin with one hand an a folded newspaper with another.

"Who is this?" He asks, in a booming baritone. Amelie flinches subtly, and sighs.

"This is Mister Balmund, daddy," she informs, simply, folding her hands in front of herself. Yuki wraps her delicate hands around one of Amelie's wrists, nestling close to her trainer in a needy embrace. Amelie's father narrows his eyes.

"I don't like that thing at the table," he reminds his daughter, sharp and pointedly. "And I don't care for company."

"Daddy, please," Amelie begs, in an exhausted tone. Having taken a seat at the table, the young man -- her brother? -- chimes in, a shit-eating grin on his features.

"Does Charles knows you're running around on him?" He taunts, in the way teenagers are wont to do. "I don't think he'd want to marry a trollop."

"Shut up, Brantley," Amelie warns. Beside her, Yuki lets out an eerie noise, hackles rising; she evidently does not appreciate his slander of her trainer. Amelie's father speaks up, but it isn't in defense of his daughter.

"If you can't keep that thing under control, put it outside," he snaps, as his wife inters the dining room, plates of eggs and bacon balanced on another tray. Amelie's jaw is clenched in frustration. You recall what she had told you, about how she wakes up every day and relives the same experience over and over again. Is this what she endures every day? Her mother gives her a stern look, as if she's the one who has done something wrong.

"Sit down and eat," she urges both of you, as she takes her own chair. There are two chairs left empty, right between Amelie's parents. What will you do?
Maskerade:
Your Pokémon step in, unwilling to let this massacre continue. Together, they tackle two of the three Rattata; having not expected the outside interference, they're knocked momentary off-guard by the attack. The two Gourgeist are surprised by the help, but grateful, and the male uses the opportunity to push back the third with a Bullet Seed.

Enraged with their intrusion, the two Rattata turn their attention on Staryu and Munchlax. One charges Staryu with a Hyper Fang, mouth agape and large teeth glinting. It sinks into the flesh of one of the echinoderm's limbs, leaving a grotesque puncture wound and doing a not-insignificant amount of damage. The other charges at Munchlax and bites him on the arm several times, leaving deep wounds as well. The Rattata is equipped to do a great deal of damage with its long, sharp incisors, but Munchlax's sturdy body soaks up much of it and the fat little creature doesn't seem very phased by the series of attacked, all things considered.

With his comrades occupied, the tables have turned on the third Rattata, and the Gourgeist are now succeeding in beating him back. Though he tries to get a bite in edgewise, he cannot seem to land a hit as the two have taken to sneaking through the shadows shadows, landing hit after hit on the rodent. Though their blows are not especially effective, they come fact and relentless, and the sheer number wears him down. If your Pokémon can hold out, you might stand a chance of defending the nest after all! What will you do?

Duke seemed to be forming a better idea of the current family dynamic, and the fractures that were forming within, in particular, in relationship with Amelie. It was beyond obvious to him at this point that this was hardly the time and place to be casually introduced to the family, and that the palpable tension in the air was only going to grow ever more oppressive from here on out. It would indeed be the perfect breakfast for Iskra, ironically enough. That said, though painfully aware of his status as an alien, he made a mind to be as least intrusive as he possibly could; minding his manners and mirroring those of his hosts, while also avoiding all conversation unless directly spoken to. His whole purpose was to observe and learn. Amelie had already relived this day countless times, but Duke needed to see it unfolded for himself.

With there being only two seats left, Duke decides to take the one right beside Amelie's father. Firstly, out of proper etiquette. He was the only guest at the dinner table, it seemed, and a male one at that, so conventions dictate that taking place beside the head of the family would only be appropriate. Secondly, it seemed to him that Amelie had the most friction towards her father, and thus taking a space between them both would likely help alleviate the tension. Before sitting down however, he approaches Amelie's seat intent on pulling it back for her. It didn't mean anything that special for him, but how rude would it be if he didn't do the minimum expected of a gentleman?

Balmund:
Amelie seems surprised by the gesture, but then smiles weakly at your chivalry, and takes her seat. As you push in her chair, Yuki drifts to float behind it, hands resting on the back. Her father is the first to serve himself, using his fork to place three flapjacks onto his plate, as well as two eggs and a hearty sampling of bacon. Next is Brantley, Amelie's brother, who takes two pancakes of his own, two of the eggs, and his own share of the bacon. Her mother is next, who takes only one pancake, one egg, and two strips of bacon. Finally her father looked to you expectantly -- it is your turn, it seems. There is only one pancake left, three eggs, and two strips of bacon.

"How is it that you know my daughter?" He asks, casting a nasty glance at Iskra. Like Amelie's mother, he does not seem fond of Ghosts. Soft, familiar footsteps patter through the doorway as Mimi totters in, making a beeline for her trainer's chair. Amelie's mother picks her up, and places her in her lap, which momentarily distracts Amelie's father as a thought comes to mind.

"Brantley," he asks. "Did you feed the Pokémon this morning?"

Brantley sighs, a bit burdened, and stands. He places two fingers in his mouth, and whistles; you can hear the sounds of scampering feet -- several of them -- coming down the stairs. A few moments later, a Weavile and a Glaceon bound nto the kitchen, the former with considerably more grace than the latter. The Glaceon heads straight for Brantley, jumping up on his legs, tail wagging. Brantley scratches it behind its ears.

"Come on, Nome," he says, to the Glaceon, as he begins to walk towards the kitchen. He picks up Mimi out of his mother lap. and greets the Weevile with a, "Hungry, Sylvester?"

When he looks at Yuki, however, he rolls his eyes, and practically sneers at Iskra. "Gross," he mutters. "Come on, you two."

He leads the gaggle of Pokémon into the other room to be fed their breakfast;
despite her relative mistreatment, Yuki follows easily, evidentally trusting the boy to treat her basically well enough. What will you and Iskra do?

Rorik watched on, horrified, as a real battle was taking place before his eyes. Worst of all, a battle involving his Pokémon…

They’re getting hurt in there! Those bite marks… they’re horrible! How can they even endure it?!

Instinctively, his hands reached for the empty PokéBalls in his belt; if he could accurately aim the beams at his partners, he could recall them to safety and get as far away from the skirmish as possible – it’s not like they’d been welcome since the very beginning, what with that arrow stuck in the tree.

Munchlax and Staryu remained undeterred, protecting the Gourgeist long enough to allow them to re-enter the fray. And before he knew it, his Pokémon and the wild ones were fighting in unison to progressively gain terrain on the attackers!

How? How are they doing this? How do they know what to do, if they’ve never even battled before? And… what is my role in all this?...

His fingers stopped an inch away from the empty devices. For the first time since the entire situation had gotten out of hand, a thought other than running away began brewing in his mind. It started with that painful memory…

-----

He finally woke up from a disjointed mess of dreams about Champion Gottfried, his brother Erik, his damned father Ulrik and a blonde-haired stranger with glasses. As he came to, he realized his body was freezing, to the point where he couldn’t feel his legs, and his hands throbbed in pain.

It took him a while to understand what was going on – especially how on earth he was moving if his legs weren’t. And then it dawned on him: someone was dragging him across the frozen floor of cave. That’s right, that was where he was… Springtide Isle’s Ice Cavern. Looking up, he discovered it was Munchlax doing the heavy lifting – or in this case, heavy dragging – as the cold barely seemed to faze him, thanks to his Thick Fat

Little by little, memories were coming back to him. That strange man in glasses had a Snover with him; Rorik had just found an egg, and suddenly those two assaulted him – everything became so cold all of a sudden… He couldn’t tell how long he’d remained imprisoned, nor who’d rescued him in the end, but surely someone did; there was no way he could’ve survived the incident by himself. He owed his life to someone… but at the same time, his Egg had been stolen!

At least my Pokémon are… wait, what?!

Staryu’s PokéBall was indeed on his belt, but… Where was Marion Ette’s Gastly? Someone had taken it away from him too!

Panic settled in, then a growing sense of frustration, and finally genuine rage overwhelmed him. He leaped up, his strength renewed, breaking free from Munchlax’s grasp, and punched the tunnel’s frozen wall in fury. Naturally, all it resulted in was a laceration in his fingers and a bleeding wound, but he did not mind the pain for once. Munchlax looked at Rorik, not entirely surprised by his reaction, but curious at the sudden display of passion by the usually hyper-rational Professor.

Useless… I’m useless! I can’t bond with my Pokémon, I can’t hold my own when under attack, I can’t even hold on to my own belongings! I am a disgrace!

He’d promised Gottfried and Erik that he’d do well, that he would make them proud. Those were his parting words when he left Heiml and boarded the S.S. Bifrost… If either of them could see them now, what would they think? What would that bastard Ulrik say about him?
At that point, he broke down in tears, all strength from the previous outburst abandoning him once more; he fell to his knees, sobbing. He might be the worst example of a true Heimlan, but no man from his homeland took dishonour well. As Munchlax walked over to him and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, Rorik looked at his partner through teary eyes and steamed-over glasses.

“I’m so sorry. Sorry for being this weak…” He understood now that he’d come ill-prepared for this journey, and that he wouldn’t be able to keep going in his present state. “We need someone who’ll show us what it’s like to be a real Trainer.”

-----

A real Trainer wouldn’t run away. He would strengthen his bond with his companions and fight together… I’ve never studied the basics of battle, but I’m not clueless! I… I’ve watched them grow, I know what they can do!

It was the most basic of premises – a Bond is formed and gains strength when Human and Pokémon work together to achieve a common goal. It was how legendary Trainers like Levin Sanders and Gottfried Haraldson had achieved such unimaginable levels of power: they fought as one with their Pokémon partners. Rorik couldn’t even conceive such a degree of brilliance… but he realized now what he had to do; his companions needed his guidance, lacking as it may be!

“Munchlax, Staryu! Please listen to me! I…. I decided to stay and fight!”

The bear, his back turned to Rorik as he faced the rat pack, grinned at how damn long it had taken the Professor to see the light; Staryu would have too, if it anatomically could. They tensed up, and awaited Rorik’s much-needed instructions; at long last, they weren’t fighting by themselves.

“Alolan Rattata are Dark-Type… Munchlax, take the front and throw a Drain Punch when they lunge!” Rorik said, suddenly overwhelmed by a kind of excitement he veritably never recalled feeling before. “Staryu, Analyze their movements and strike last with a Tackle at those that Munchlax can’t hit!”

Wh… what am I doing?...

With new resolve in your heart, you throw yourself into the battle, even if you remain uncertain of things. Encouraged by your new enthusiasm, your Pokémon also seem to find a new fighting spirit as well; Munchlax dodges an incoming tackle from one of the Rattata and slams his fist into the back of its head in an unforgiving punch, the satisfying crack it makes bringing new life to the chunky creature as if draining it directly from the rodent. The rodent hits the ground panting hard -- it's a critical hit! He looks pretty worse for wear. Staryu obeys your orders and tackles the other Rattata, sending it sliding back across the the dirt to collide with the wall of a mausoleum, but while he comes away scuffed up, he looks to be in much better shape than his partner. He lunges for Staryu with his mouth open and crunches down on one of its limbs, leaving another nasty puncture wound; Staryu is now bleeding quite badly.

Through their combined efforts, meanwhile, the Gourgeist have managed to drive away the third Rattata, who runs off into the underbrush, one leg limping badly. Enraged at the loss of their child, they rush the two feeding on their egg; one flees past their nest, but the other raises its hackles, ready for a fight. They seem confident they can deal with this one as well, filled too with fresh confidence now that they have your help.

Munchlax is full of energy. Staryu can still fight, but is looking increasingly roughed up. One of the Rattata is on its last legs while the other is still going strong. The Gourgeist have driven off the third assailant and are now avenging their lost egg. What will you do?

It was quite a sight to see. Not only were his Pokémon doing exactly as he instructed, the strategy seemed to have paid off! The tide of the battle was turning in their favour, but even then, seeing the Adoption Center's - no, his - Staryu suffer such a grievous wound from Rattata's Crunch was heart-wrenching.

And yet, it doesn't contemplate fleeing for a mere second... Staryu wants to see this through to the end, and I... I have to respect its will. Alright then...

He thought the transition would have been much rougher - switching from a scientist to a battler - but these Rattata were untrained, instinctual beings. There was no reason he could not formulate a proper plan to defeat them, even with his absolute lack of field experience. After all...

I can rely on them.

Munchlax in particular seemed to be in tip-top shape, making the most of the unique move taught to him by Gottfried some time before he'd given him to Rorik. That he knew, no other Munchlax in the world had been trained to know such techniques, and he owed it to the Champion he so admired to put that training to good use!

"Staryu, you're injured... Munchlax, shield it! Toughen up with the Iron Defense you mastered under Gottfried, and Drain Punch the Rattata when they lunge at you!" shouted Rorik, amazed at how naturally these instructions came to him. "Staryu, catch your breath and Harden up behind Munchlax's cover, don't take risks for now."

He wasn't a risk-taker like his brother, it just wasn't in his nature. Erik would have kept up the charge until the rats were lying prone on the ground, consequences be damned, but that bleeding wound on Staryu was a gruesome sight, and it cooled off Rorik's impulse of keeping up the offensive.
Munchlax was sturdy enough to take the blows and retaliate when the opportunity arose; rushing ahead would just get the starfish hurt even worse, and it was not yet experienced enough to learn how to Recover by itself.

Let's just hope I'm not putting those Gourgeist and their eggs at risk by being so conservative. I... I have to look after my own first.

-----

OoC: I so would have had Munchlax use Soft-Boiled on Staryu... until I read that it apparently cannot be used like that in the games anymore after Gen VII

He leads the gaggle of Pokémon into the other room to be fed their breakfast;
despite her relative mistreatment, Yuki follows easily, evidentally trusting the boy to treat her basically well enough. What will you and Iskra do?

It was hard not to distinguish a certain theme regarding the family's choice of Pokémon: Ice-types, each and every single one of them. Why did they held Ghost-tyes in such contempt however? Was it due to some family rivalry? That could certainly explain a great deal, and would make some sense given the context of this story; Duke could understand it to some degree out of personal experience. Several of Blackthorn's most ancient of families took to Dragon breeding and taming very seriously, and expected future generations to carry on the legacy to perfection, even if youngsters nowadays weren't so keen on old traditions. Duke himself was a sort of deviant as well, being a lot more partial to pseudo-dragons than fully blooded ones. He could relate how one's passions and preferences could earn the scorn of one's peers, and in a way, it wasn't that much different to what Amelie was going through herself.

Now that he was being offered the chance to pick his share, Duke turns to Amelie before turning back to the plate. There wasn't that much left, which is unsurprising given he wasn't being expected this morning, and partly because of this it didn't quite feel right to take a share prior to Amelie. Everyone else had taken theirs beforehand, the clear implication being that she was beneath in status than even himself, and should Duke take a portion similar to the rest of the family, Amelie would be left with nothing but scraps. This wouldn't do. Despite her father's apparent expectation, he decides to concede his turn and allow Amelie to have her fill first. Perhaps he could handwaive the action with some generic excuse so as to avoid any implied offense if it turned out to be at all necessary. 'I'm not that hungry today.', or maybe 'I'm afraid I'm feeling under the weather this morning.', or perhaps 'It's fine, tea and toast will do for me.' But before the need would even arise, Duke decided to shift the focus of attention towards the question Amelie's father had asked. He thought it best to answer briefly, and with relative honesty. Perhaps a bit of flattery would set the mood right.

"In truth, I just had a chance encounter with Lady Amelie's Froslass while strolling around with my Shuppet, a gift from a dear friend. This lead to a pleasant exchange, and before I knew it, I was invited to breakfast before being off on my way. I have to say however, I couldn't help but take notice of your Pokémon. I'm a dragon tamer by family trade myself, but even so, I find yours to be magnificent - that much I can tell."

Iskra on her end was thoroughly enjoying herself. Ever since birth, she's always been a being defined by the raw hatred that brought her into life. There was no existance prior to this. Hate was what made her be, and to hate was to love. She couldn't feel more loved right now. So when offered to part with the rest of the family and follow Yuki, she found herself clearly torn. Amelie's parents where just giving her so much love, but a part of her really did want to follow Yuki along. If it wasn't for Brantley, she probably would've stayed back, but it was hard to resist his potential for malice too! Oh what sort of twisted intent did he hide just for her? Only one way to find out!

Your body felt like it desperately wanted to come here, as if some memory buried deep was forcing you to trudge through the winding hallways of the mansion. Your Litwick, usually filled with more life in such a location, a place where he could feast uninterrupted, seemed withdrawn, even it's usually bright flame seemed to dim in the dank hallways. The Foongus in your arms shook in fear, was it really wise to bring the usually sheltered Pokemon to a place such as this? You weren't really sure of the answer, but you hoped that your Litwick's support would be enough to encourage the timid Foongus to liven up his life with a little adventure. You were curious what had actually happened here... why this mansion was the way it was, and more importantly why dark types were drawn here in such numbers.

As you walked down one of the numerous expansive halls in the mansion, you found yourself drawn to a particular room. Despite the mansion being dark and seemingly devoid of life, you swore you could smell a roast cooking from this direction. Maybe it was just your mind playing tricks on you, maybe you were just hungry and dreaming about food --- but your curiosity had gotten the better of you. You walked in the direction the smell was coming from, which lead you into what looked to be a dining hall. The table held twelve chairs, all lavishly decorated with red cusions. Each placement at the table was set, holding chipped and grimy plates and rusted silverware. It was as though the manor itself was waiting for a dinner that never seemed to arrive. There was a candlestick in the centre of the table, it's three candles had been dead for quite some time, the wax had torn through the once beautiful floral table cloth. It was haunting to see such a scene, had the dinner guests left in a hurry? Or was this set specifically for an occasion that never occurred? Innumerable questions ran through your head as you attempted to figure out why.

You hear the door from beyond the table open, the one that presumably leads to the kitchen. You glance over quickly, wondering if it had weak hinges and had just blown open... and that's when you notice her. A young woman in a maid outfit, her hair is long and black; done into a ponytail. She seems slightly startled when she notices you, her eyes look tired, a pale blue that reflects little emotion.

"Oh... hello." She said, giving a small curtsy. "I didn't hear you come in, would you like some refreshments while you wait for master to come home?" You look at the girl, confused. You had heard this house was abandoned, who was this master she was referring to? Should you accept her offer? What do you do?
The smell of meat being cooked hit Austin's nostrils as soon as he entered the manor. For a place supposedly abandoned, it was obvious that someone, or something, still called this place home. Even if the smell was a lie, only there to uphold the place's name, it was the only clue to go by. The followed the scent, Custer in hand and Wisp in tow. As he made his way to the dining room, the boy felt a sense of dread creep up on him. Was this just another lie? No, this was a deep fear within him. He opened the doors and saw the set dining room. He looked on, seeing the place become engulfed in flames. Blinking quickly, the fire was gone. A memory. It had to be a memory.

Continuing on, he started to examine the table. Walking around he saw chipped plates and grimy cutlery set up in perfect order, as if there was about to be a feast. The smells of cooking food, which heavily saturated the air, only seemed to confirm this. However, where were the guests? It would seem awfully amiss if no one showed up for a grand feast. Perhaps... no one ever did. He saw Wisp float to the middle of the table, and curiously look at the melted candle wax that stained the table cloth. The wax was more a pale, sickly cream color, most likely from years of staying put and never being cleaned. He beckoned the Litwick back to him. They were not Wisp's kin, it was just a remnant of man.

Suddenly, Austin could hear the opening of doors, and glances towards it. A young maid walks through, and notices him. With a tired sigh, she welcomes him and says the master isn't back yet. Master...? So something does call this place home. Weighing on her offer, Austin decides to accept it. Even if it was a lie, he would gleam more information into the workings of this place.

"Sure, I would like a drink. Could you perhaps escort me to a more... Comfortable place please?"

Missingno. Master - [Update Music]

In a flash, Colin zipped across the bend of the swamp, his eyes set directly on the swarm of Combee, their apparent ringleader still harassing the poor bee-keeper clad woman. They didn’t seem to notice the giant dragonfly Pokemon making a beeline right for them, however, instead focusing on the commanding Combee’s vicious attacks. The opportunity was ripe for a surprise attack; with the bee Pokemon distracting themselves, Colin took the chance to charge up an Ancient Power. The Yanmega attuned itself to the prehistoric energy from the fossils buried deep within the area surrounding it, causing large rocks to lift out of the swamp and into the air, floating beside the bug Pokemon. With a powerful beating of its wings, the rocks launched through the air and directly at the Combee attacking the woman, who was in the midst of diving into her from above.

And then, something odd happened. The ringleader immediately stopped mid-air, froze in place, and turned to face the Yanmega with vicious red eyes. Without even attempting to dodge, the barrage of rocks slammed into their target head on - and unfortunately, partially into the woman as well, as she yelped in pain upon being hit in the backside with Colin’s attack. The small boulders hitting the dirt kicked up a small cloud of dust as a result.

The swarm of Combee - six of them, to be exact, minus the ringleader - immediately bolted out of the dust cloud from the attack, leaving a short trail behind them as they flew out into the open air over the bog taking direct aim at Colin. In unison, the swarm began to beat their tiny wings, kicking up a powerful gale from a united Gust. The wind was powerful enough to catch Colin off guard, causing it to skip a beat on one of his wings, sending him into a tailspin into the marsh below. Fortunately, the Pokemon seemed more aggravated by the flying-type attack than anything, as he quickly regained his bearings and darted back up into the air to confront the swarm face to face.

The Yanmega verticalized himself and began chopping his wings through the air in a peculiar pattern. The wind itself around Colin started to become visible, and blade shaped. With a hard clap of his wings, the Pokemon hurled an Air Slash at the group. One of the Combee was immediately hit, catching it off guard and causing it to flinch. The rest weren’t so lucky either, as the attack left them spinning backward through the air, visibly irritated and sucking up their fresh wounds. With one of the Combee still shaken up, and the ringleader still unaccounted for from within the now settling dust, the remaining five took back to the sky with a burning fury, darting for Colin with their mouths wide open, preparing for a group Bug Bite. Colin predicted this, however, and was able to take advantage of their anger by zipping from side to side, causing three of the Combee to overshoot their target entirely. Two, however, landed direct hits, latching on to Colin’s legs and biting down hard. The Yanmega promptly responded with a Bug Buzz, vibrating his wings furiously and creating a high-powered sound wave. The Combee all locked up at the sound of the attack, freezing in place and falling just above the surface of the swamp, their defenses lowered, barely able to keep themselves afloat. It became apparent that Colin was growing tired as well, as his wings had slowed in speed.

“WATCH OUT!” The woman suddenly blurted out. The dust had settled, and the ringleader was still nowhere to be seen. The rock-typed Ancient Power should have left the Combee seriously injured, or at least, one would think. However, as you were about to learn, this was no ordinary Combee.

“Buzzzzzeeeeaaa!” You turned from Colin to face the sudden sound. There, in front of you, was the dirtied and beat-up ringleader, its eyes full of hatred. In the split second you had to analyze the situation, you realized that this Combee had something different about it that the other Combee did not: it had a small, triangular spot situated on its central face, indicating that it was a female. But you did not get enough time to react properly - the woman’s warning was not even enough of the head’s up you needed to prepare you for what came next.

With a glow of its body and dangerous intent in her eyes, the bee Pokemon spun herself sideways, swung her abdomen through the air, and unleashed a formidable Endeavor point blank onto your Meowth, sending the talking cat flying through the air with the forceful impact of her surprise attack.

The Carnvine tightened its grip around Kratos’ waist, sweet smelling saliva oozing from its mouth, indicating its desperate hunger. Keen on making sure peking duck wasn’t on the menu, you commanded Kratos to retaliate with a Confuse Ray. The Golduck relaxed himself and concentrated intensely. The red jewel on his forehead glistened, and a golden orb of light manifested in the air, immediately encircling Kratos’ captor before dissipating in front of its eyes with a ‘pop’.

The flytrap Pokemon prepared to strike the Golduck with another close range Vine Whip, but in its confusion, it overshot its target, whipping itself across the face and sending it backwards, causing it to loosen and release Kratos from the Carnivine’s grasping Bind. Seething with rage, the Carnivine extended its tendrils to each side and began flailing its vines mercilessly through the air, hoping to strike the Golduck. Kratos was worn down and clearly exasperated, but concentrated on his opponent’s vines and their patterns as they tore through the air intent on catching him off guard. Then, with one final burst of energy, the duck Pokemon lifted his claws to each side of his jewel and fired quick, short bursts of an Ice Beam directly at each rain-soaked tendril, freezing them instantly in mid-air. Kratos leapt into the air, jumping onto one frozen vine, and then to the other, before launching himself above the Carnivine with his claws adjacent to his jewel and releasing one last burst of Ice Beam directly at the grass-type, hitting it square in the center of its face, the energy enveloping its storm-drenched body and freezing it entirely. The frozen Carnivine collapsed onto the mud, knocked out.

Kratos landed behind its opponent, and his legs gave out from underneath of him. He wasn’t knocked out, but this Pokemon was not going to be doing anymore battling for a while. He rolled over onto his side and lifted his arm slowly, forming his claw into a thumbs up, letting you know he was alright.

The path ahead was wide open now. Thunder cracked again through the air, the torrential downpour showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. It was somewhat difficult to see, being obscured by blankets of rain and the treetops of mangroves, but it was unmistakeable: the rocky coastline that bordered the ocean was not much further ahead.

(Kratos has gained five levels as a combination of battling and all of his work on your journey thus far.)

The man turned to face you, once more showing no emotion. However, there was something off about the way he presented himself, and his next words only solidified that. “I apologize, but you must be mistaken. What Houndour? When I found you at the bottom of the stairwell, you were alone,” the groundskeeper said, stoic and monotone.

You turned to walk back into the room you had just come from, only to notice that there was now a door connecting the room to the hall in which you stood, and it was sealed tightly shut. This made no sense, however, as you can recall that the large, open room connected directly into the hallway with no door separating the two. The man spoke up again as you halted, unable to open the door. “You must have hit your head too hard when you fell through the floor. You did not come here with a Houndour. Your injuries must be worse than I had realized. Come now, we mustn’t dillydally. Let’s continue down the hall so that we can get upstairs. We’ll get you first aid while I boil a pot of tea. I insist.”

The light of his candle flickered briefly, and as it did, you could hear the sound of barking. There was no mistaking it, it was Pouli. And yet, Pouli wasn’t here. Was it just your imagination? The sound? Or was he right - maybe you had hit your head too hard. Maybe you never came in here with Pouli to begin with…? Or, perhaps, he was gaslighting you...?

You take a seat under a nice, shady tree, so that you and your Pokémon can enjoy a long-awaited picnic lunch in this serene and picturesque scenery. Though your teammate’s eating habits may be macabre, you don’t mind; that’s just nature, after all! In fact, there’s a trainer around these parts who would sympathize quite well with your naturalist lifestyle.

The wind blows through the leaves, and the waters of the swamp ripple and bubble with life. Here and there, you hear something croak, or caw, or coo. Everything around here buzzes with life, staking out territory or seeking a mate; hunting for food or trying to stay off the menu. You and your gang don’t have to worry about such things, of course; you’re more than intimidating enough, more than prepared enough, to scare off anything that might try to make a meal out of you!

Satisfied with your vantage point, overlooking the beauty of Celebi’s sacred home, you begin unpacking your own foodstuffs, when something drops onto your head. Reaching up, you pluck a leaf out of your hair. How quaint! What a charming venue for a picnic! You set it aside, but another drops. And another. Looking up to see what might be causing the tree to shed, you jump when what appears to be a grimacing face glowers down at you!

Wait, no. Faces don’t have green skin. After the adrenaline subsides, you realize you’re looking at the raised haunch of a Spinarak. That’s… well, a little concerning. It doesn’t look happy, but it’s just one Bug-type. There were bound to be bugs all over this swamp. You’re about to shoo it off, when another descends from the tree you’re sitting under. And then another. And yet another. Soon, a dozen have crawled their way down the trunk. Then two dozen. Then three. Then an innumerable amount are covering the wood, and they all look ****ed. Perhaps this was the wrong place for a picnic?

You’ve come for a friendly outing, but now you’re under a tree, covered in angry spiders! What will you do?!

All six of Hyrem's Pokemon loomed over him as he started to unpack the food, but that didn't stop a leaf from avoiding everyone's heads but his. He dropped it to the ground, but more soon fell on his head, so he had to look up to see what was going- OKAY THAT'S WEIRD. But wait...isn't that a Spinarak's abdomen? He had owned one before, which was why he was able to recognize it after the initial shock. Maybe he could try catching this one and get another chance to raise one? Before he could reach for a Pokeball, however, more of the green spiders started to crawl down the tree. Henrietta had ideas of her own as she puffed up her cheeks, ready to shoot out her tongue in order to snag one of them for a juicy meal, but she soon deflated her cheeks without launching and started to cower behind her trainer's shoulder as even more started to pour down the tree, each one of them livid at the intruders' presence. Everyone then realized this was a whole colony of Spinarak, and they had just stumbled into their territory.

It seemed a bit strange that a whole colony of spiders inside a tree didn't have signs of obvious webbing, but maybe the webbing was thin enough that it couldn't be seen from outside. Whatever the case, this was their home, and even if he and his Pokemon won a battle against the hundreds of them it would still leave a bad taste in his mouth. As Wendy and the snakes started hissing threats against the Spinarak, Hyrem ordered, "Stop it, girls, it's not worth it! We'll just have to find somewhere else to rest, that's all." He scooped up Sorano back into his arms, Nissa and Henrietta staying perched on his shoulders as he slowly backed away from the tree, urging his Seviper and Salamence to do the same. Wendy, however, inhaled, and Hyrem knew what she was planning.

"Wendy, no!" he barked at her, causing her to hold her breath. "This is really not the time for a Flamethrower, so stand down...now." All she wanted to do was torch the place, but orders were orders, so she let off a short huff before walking away, keeping an eye on the Bug-types to make sure they wouldn't do anything. "You too, Amethyst, Kinana," he added to the Seviper, who were both coiled back, ready to lunge at the first Spinarak that jumped at them, but Amethyst soon loosened her body and started slithering away, Kinana following suit. As they all backed off, Hyrem intentionally leaving behind whatever food he had unpacked as a peace offering, he hoped that would be the end of it and the Spinarak would let them leave the tree unharmed.

With a glow of its body and dangerous intent in her eyes, the bee Pokemon spun herself sideways, swung her abdomen through the air, and unleashed a formidable Endeavor point blank onto your Meowth, sending the talking cat flying through the air with the forceful impact of her surprise attack.

And Colin was off! The Yanmega flew so fast Keith wasn't even sorry he didn't have Speed Boost- he was plenty fast the way he was. Unfortunately, the Ancient Power he fired off wasn't quite as carefully aimed as he or Keith would've liked- part of the attack, unavoidably, hit the woman in the ass. "Sorry!" Keith called at this. But before much else could be said, the Combee reacted. The leader turned to face them, eyes glowing an angry red, and didn't even try to dodge the incredibly super effective move. The rest of the swarm fled the resultant dust cloud, however, and attacked as one, their Gust attacks united to create a formidable gale the likes of which threw even Keith's powerful Yanmega for a loop. "Colin, straighten out!" Keith called desperately, for the Flying move had sent the Ogre Darner Pokémon into a tailspin.

"...Yan ya!" grunted Colin, managing to right himself in midair. Far from down and out, Colin was ready, willing, able, and pissed.

"Yes!" Keith grinned. "Now, Colin! Air Slash, let's go!"

"Yan yaaaa!" Colin rumbled, unleashing blades of air at the horde of Combee. Keith grinned- the super effective move did major damage to all five targets.

Keith, however, knew the battle was far from over. Though the Air Slash was undoubtedly effective, all five Combee were still in the fight, and they all started to dive-bomb Colin, Bug Bite attacks at the ready. "Dodge it!" Keith commanded.

"Yan! Ya! Yan! Ya!" grunted Colin, darting in midair to evade the angry bees... though only succeeded with three of them. The other two managed to grab hold with their Bug Bite attacks. "YAAAAN!" Colin growled angrily.

"Colin, use Bug Buzz!" Keith ordered.

"Yan... YAAAAAA!" Colin trilled, unleashing the powerful Bug move. Not normally a smart choice against Flying-types like Combee, but thanks to Colin's Tinted Lens, that resistance was nullified quite effectively, resulting in a lot of damage to the Combee horde.

"Alright, Colin, you're doing great-" began Keith, before the woman shouted for him to watch out. And Keith looked. And he saw exactly for what he ought watch out.

Combee are Bug and Flying-types. Two types that share one very important distinction- namely, a weakness to Rock. Thus, when struck by a move like Ancient Power, one would expect a Bug and Flying-type like Combee to be severely damaged, if not outright one-hit KO'd. And yet, this was not the case with the sixth Combee, the leader of the swarm. And now, looking at it up close, Keith could see a red triangular marking on the forehead of this Combee's bottommost head. From what little Keith knew of Combee as a species, he knew this was the distinguishing mark of the rare female Combee, making Combee one of the species of Pokémon whose genders were easiest to distinguish on sight, second only to the Hippopotas line.

However, Keith barely had time to register these facts in his mind- this Combee was female, and was by no means discouraged by the super effective blow she'd taken- before the Tiny Bee Pokémon landed a powerful Endeavor- on Meowth! "Meowth!" Keith exclaimed as the attack sent the Normal-type flying.

"Gaaah..." Meowth groaned, struggling to get to his feet. "Dat was powerful..."

"You OK, Meowth?" called Keith.

"I been betta," Meowth replied, now standing back up, albeit a bit shakily. "Dat Combee must'a taken a buttload o' damage from dat Ancient Powah..."

Keith nodded his agreement. Endeavor, he knew, was a move where the Pokémon took down the opponent's health level to that of the user, and since Meowth had sustained heavy damage, Keith knew that Combee must have as well. And yet, despite having taken so much damage, she was by no means ready to call it quits. Alarming, yes, and yet, Keith couldn't help but admire such tenacity on some level.

"Alright," he stated. "Colin, just a little more, you're doing great!" he encouraged his tired Yanmega. "Air Slash and Bug Buzz worked pretty well for you last time, so give those Combee a bit of a repeat performance, yeah? And Meowth, get ready," he added. "Looks like you're in on this as well. Use Water Pulse on the female, follow up with Icy Wind, then let fly your Thunderbolt attack!"

Gary watched intently as Kratos stared down the angry Carnivine, ignoring the clap of thunder around them. He was drenched to the bone by all the rain, but that was the least of his concerns right now. The Flytrap Pokemon currently had its vines around Kratos’ waist, but in Gary’s eyes that was right where he wanted them. Now Kratos had the luxury of knowing exactly where to fire his finishing move and ending this battle for once and for all.

Kratos started things off by flashing the Carnivine with the gem on his forehead as the Confuse Ray disoriented it. It was perfectly timed too, because the confusion caused the Carnivine to miss a point blank Vine Whip that would have certainly put a beating on the water typed Golduck. Carnivine released Kratos from its hold and began to thrash about its vines in pure frustration. Kratos seized the opportunity and took careful aim, blasting the Carnivine with an Ice Beam that put it down for good.

Pumping his fist, Gary gave Kratos a thumps up as the Golduck fell to his knees and returned the gesture. “Great work, Kratos!” Gary called out as Kratos slumped down in exhaustion. “You’re a superstar, buddy! Take a long rest, you deserve it!” Gary ran over and rubbed Kratos on the head before returning him to his Pokeball. Thunder boomed once again, and Gary’s focus returned to the task at hand. The rain wasn’t getting any lighter and the man surely wasn’t getting any healthier.

Gary jogged forward down the path, knowing what he had to do. The mud splashed below his feet, and this time Gary took extra precaution to watch his footing so he wouldn’t repeat what he had just gone through. It was tough to see through all the rain, but he could just barely make out the rocky coast up ahead. He hurried and pressed forward, wondering what kind of threat was in store for him up ahead.

Sandaa: [Update Music] + Atmosphere

After making your way toward the coast for several minutes, the rain finally seemed like it was beginning slow down a bit. The wind wasn’t as blustery, and the thunderclaps began to become fewer and farther between. Granted, it was still pouring, but the torrents of silver blankets that had made it difficult to see even thirty feet in any direction were now just modest rain showers.

It had been at least a couple of hours since you had left the old man behind, and you were still intent on fulfilling his request of getting his Pokemon back. As you made your way oceanside, you recalled once more the events that had transpired that had led to you finding the old man: He had been scattering his daughter’s ashes to the sea, as was her dying wish - which in turn seemed to have angered something into retaliation. The old man was attacked, lost his bag, and stumbled away in confusion, bleeding and concussed, before finding you in the swamp.

There seemed to be a lot of unfilled holes in that story. The man had passed out before he was able to explain the exact details of the debacle, or give you a good idea of where on the coast he had been, what he had seen, or how he even had managed to make it away alive, and without his Pokeballs at that. If only he had been able to leave you with some of that key information, maybe you would have been able to…

The mangroves were beginning to thin out. You could see the trees and their large roots lining the sea, seeming to form a long wall of trees and wood acting as a natural barrier to keep the swampland separated from the ocean itself. The wall extended as far as the eye could see, ending right alongside a small river delta that poured into the ocean. And on the other side of that delta, in front of you, was the rocky coast that picked up where the mangrove wall had ended. It wasn’t a beach proper, though. Some sections looked easily traversable, even with numerous crags threateningly jutting out of the ocean nearby. Waves crashed against them and spilled onto the coastline, a show of nature’s raw might, threatening to overtake and swallow anything that may be foolish enough to come near. It was truly a sight to behold.

And that’s when you noticed something odd. You seem to have a knack for that, it would seem. Finding odd things. Perhaps that knack was about to payoff though, because just up ahead, under some slabs of shale that protruded from a natural rock formation, you spotted a Pokeball with half of a bloody handprint on it. And that wasn’t all; another Pokeball sat in a shallow puddle closer toward the ocean. Once more, you noticed something not too far from there: on the outermost rocks that met the sea’s tide was a soaked, brown leather bag. The ocean seemed indecisive on whether it wanted it or not; the tide kept grabbing the bag, pulling it inward toward the current, and then spitting it back up onto the coast. Before you had time to react, however, it seemed as though the ocean had indeed made up its mind, ultimately deciding to pull the bag - and it's contents - out into its infinite grasp, as it slowly drifted further and further out to sea. Trying to salvage this bag would surely be a fool’s errand…

The rain continued to cascade down from the sky as hard as ever, but the closer Gary got to the rocky coast, the more the other elements of the storm seemed to lighten up. The thrashing wind calmed down a touch while the time between claps of thunder seemed to grow larger in between them. Normally Gary would have taken his time to leisurely examine all of the changing terrain, from the foliage to the muddy rocks he walked across, but time was not on his side right now to his disappointment. Part of his mission to research all forms of marine life included the environments they lived in, but as he made mental snapshots of the area he passed through, he would have to come back another time if he were to study it in full detail.

The wall of trees that barricaded the swamp gave way to a small river delta that opened up onto the rocky coast. This kind of area would typically be teaming with all kinds of life in the brackish waters where the river and the ocean met, but Gary bit his lip and steeled himself as he passed it by as he headed onto the rocky beach, another stunning display of the ocean’s power. He admired the rocky crags that jutted out of the water, having been battered and shaped by the waves for possibly millions of years. He wondered how much this scene had been influenced by mankind, which he concluded was probably not much.

It was then the sight of some Pokeballs and a brown leather bag that snapped Gary out of his awestruck observations. One of the balls had a bloody handprint on it, causing Gary to realize right away that he had in fact found the man’s belongings. He first picked up the bloody Pokeball, and then while he bent over to grab the one sitting in a small pool of water, Gary caught sight of the leather bag being pulled away by the current into the sea. “Shit,” Gary cursed under his breath. He was not going to have a lot of time to react on this one.

Gary quickly pulled a pair of goggles out of his bag and slipped them on over his forehead. He then set his bag down along with the man’s two Pokeballs securely behind a large rock where hopefully they would not be seen in the event of someone or something coming along while he left them unattended. Not caring about his already soaking wet clothes, mostly because they were already technically swimwear, Gary charged forward to the water, tossing out one of his own Pokeballs.

“Aero! I need you on this one!” Gary called out, lowering the goggles over his eyes. “Let’s Dive after that bag quickly!” Not deterred at all by the choppiness of the waves, Gary grabbed onto his Mantine’s back and took a deep breath. He was confident enough in his ability to hold his breath under water, and he had dived enough with Aero in the past that his Mantine knew Gary’s cues on when it was time to surface. As the two broke the surface of the water, his eyes scanned around, hoping to catch sight of the bag sooner rather than later.

The strange, yet beautiful music, that was no doubt some sort of symphony, continued to play as you and your Squirtle followed it, not even realizing that you had become so fixated on it that you had ceased paying attention to your own actions. As you made your way to the edge of the swamp, still enamoured by the music, your foot caught hold of a rock under the water, causing you to trip over yourself and faceplant directly into grass on the edge of the marsh. Your Squirtle was immediately concerned and rushed over to ensure that you were okay - but your stumble could not, and did not, break your attention. Civilization. That music - yes, it had to be civilization. This swamp wasn’t what you had thought it would be, and the thought that you could find civilization was as exciting to you as the music that continued to play.

As you lifted yourself out of the bog, you and Greg remained mesmerized by the song that was playing in the distance - the sound of the xylophone, the strings, the wooden percussion, the wind instruments! Yes, it was all so exciting - and then the music became softer, and for a moment, perhaps even somber - and then eventually louder again, and once again it began repeating itself from the beginning. As you walked down the forest path in front of you, your legs steadily picked up pace, the music getting louder with each step. Every now and then, the sun would pierce through the forest canopy, hitting vines and illuminating the trees on the sides of the narrow pathway.

You aren’t sure how long you and your Squirtle walked for, but you followed your ears, eventually straying off of the trail entirely to find the source of the music. Eventually, the music became loud, so loud that it was drowning the sounds out of everything else around you. You and the tiny turtle Pokemon were met face to face with a large wall of underbrush, which stood between you and the source of the music, whatever it was. Civilization, yes! That’s what it had to be. There was no denying it. You reached through the thicket, parting the old vines and leaves, and…

It was beautiful, enchanting, and like something out of a storybook, or a fairy tale - but it wasn’t civilization. That didn’t matter, though; this was unprecedented. Before you was a large, shaded clearing with trickles of light penetrating the forest ceiling above, the rays dancing as the wind skirted the tree tops. But more importantly was the spectacle that unfolded before you; Pokemon, and lots of them, all facing the direction opposite of where you were. Numerous Kricketot gleefully vibrated their antennae against each other; several Chingling rocked their bodies back and forth, occasionally leaping into the air; a few Chimecho hung on tree branches beside them, swaying in the wind; several Nuzleaf sat on tree branches, blowing their leaves as though they were flutes; a single Tangela outstretched its vines against a rock and shook each one to produce a sound; multiple Pikipek scattered among various trees gently pecked at the bark rhythmically; and finally, a single Kricketune stood directly in front of them, swinging its arms and guiding the rest of this oddball of an orchestra as though it were its conductor.

None of these Pokemon seemed to notice your presence and continued to play their song none the wiser. What do you do?
Once again Erven found himself surprised and confounded by what he'd found in this swamp. It seemed to him that every time he feels he has any sort of preconceived notion about anything involving this place, the reality of it subverts every expectation he held. He'd hoped to find his kind, people to trade with and converse, to inquire of and possibly ask for some assistance, but that was, as he and Greg very recently discovered, would not be the case. Though this revelation was not so nearly as disappointing as the first.

The fact that the source of the wonderful music was coming not from any human made instruments, but from what he assumed to be wild pokemon and whatever assets and objects nature afforded them made the sweet melodies all the more impressive. Erven crouched down by his partner, hunching to hide his form beneath the layer of brush that separated them from the ensemble of talented pokemon. "This is kind of strange," Erven whispered to Greg in a hushed tone he hoped wouldn't spook the performers, "but cool. Can you... make music, too?" he questioned, genuinely curious of his companion's abilities.

Greg's expression mirrored that of his trainer's, his small brow furrowing in a curiosity of his own, never having before attempted his hand at music and shifted his gaze downward toward his abdomen. The squirtle raised his stout appendages tentatively and began to slap the shell on his chest along to the music, though couldn't quite match the beat. His arms lingering at the front of his torso, Greg looked back up to his human friend, shaking his head in a definitive and confident negative.

"That's alright," Erven assured him, easily, and placed a palm upon the crown of Greg's head. "You're good at other things... like walking long distances through swamps. Like me!" He offered with an unusually warm tone. "So what do you say we go introduce ourselves?" Erven suggested, to which Greg emphatically nodded in agreement. The trainer smiled, pleased to see his pokemon so excited, and pressed both hands to his bent knee, rising up from the moist ground and pushed the brush to announce their presence.

Le Cimetičre des Cœurs Oubliés

Balmund:
It takes Amelie a moment to realize what you're doing, and she seems genuinely shaken by your deference. Not used to being put before others, she hesitates, before finally serving herself. First placing the last singular pancake on her plate, she cuts it in half with her knife, before placing one of the portions onto your plate with a grateful smile. She takes for herself one egg, and one strip of bacon, satisfied with this; the rest she leaves to you to take. She begins pouring syrup over her half a cake from a silver serving boat as her father speaks again, sounding terse.

"You understand," he points out, as he cuts into his eggs. "That it's unsuitable for a betrothed woman to bring home male guests. Or did she not tell you she has a fiance?"

The implications are clear, and unbecoming of Amelie, though she doesn't acknowledge them, simply taking a bite of her bacon slice. Her smile has disappeared however, giving way to a bland and unimpressed expression.

In the kitchen, Brantley lays out four bowls of food for the Pokémon -- one for Mimi, one for Nome, one for Sylvester, and one for Yuki and Iskra to share. Iskra and Yuki's bowl seem a little light for even one Pokémon, much less two; Brantley does not seem to care, absorbing himself with petting Nome as the Glaceon begins to scarf down kibbles. Yuki, mischievous and less than fond of the boy, picks up one of her kibbles, and pelts him with the head with it, giggling eerily. Immediately, he snaps to attention, and whacks her upside the head, with no care that she isn't even his to discipline.

"Stupid spook," he snaps. "Eat your food, or I'll take it away. You too, you rag."

He appears to be addressing Iskra with his last remark. Breakfast in this household does not seem very welcoming, at least not to those who don't conform precisely to the standards of the family. What will you and Iskra do?
Maskerade:
You issue your orders with uncanny ease, as the Rattata pick themselves up from the ground and make another lunge at your Pokémon. Munchlax places himself between their attackers as his teammate, tensing his body until his defenses are like iron. The weaker of the two Rattata strikes him in the gut, but bounces off, leaving hardly a scratch on the chunky creature. Munchlax takes advantage of the situation and slams a fist down directly into the middle of the rodent's back, gaining further resolve from the sickening crunch it makes, as if draining life from the Rattata with the very punch; he stomps his feet and slams his closed fists together, raring to go, as the Rattata falls to the dirt, defeated.

With a quick attack, the other zips right past Munclax, however, slamming into Staryu. Staryu loses some ground, and Rattata barrels forward, teeth bared, but Staryu is prepared and hardens its epidermis. When Rattata bites into the echinoderm, it barely makes a dent. Even worse for it, Munchlax now looms over it from behind, and before it can skitter out of range, another punch is issued, equally draining to its victim as it impacts its ribs. Not wanting to end up like its partners, it hits the ground running, and scrambles away, disappearing into the brush. For surviving the onslaught despite disadvantages, Staryu gains 2 levels! For nearly single-handedly defeating both Rattata while defending his partner, Munchlax gains 3 levels! There's a horrible screech from behind you, and you turn around to find the Gourgeist have driven off the gorging Rattata as well; the female gathers her broken and desecrated egg into her arms, cradling it.

There is a fainted Rattata left behind; four more have run off; one directly past the nest, and three in various directions. The Gourgeist are mourning the loss of one of their unhatched children. What will you do?

Le Marais Sacré de Celebi

Gemini Spark:
You urge your Pokémon back, unwilling to decimate an entire colony of anything, even Spinarak, if you don't absolutely have to. You even leave your food behind as a peace offering to the creepy-crawlies, but it seems to be of no avail; they skitter right past, charging directly towards you, and...

Past you?

Dozens, possibly hundreds, of Spinarak go running past your ankles, past your Pokémon, as if fleeing something in terror. And after a moment, it becomes evident what that thing is, when a massive amphibian slams into the trunk. And then another. And then a third. Soon, half a dozen Seismitoad are clinging to the trunk, stick tongue snapping up stragglers in a gruesome display of nature. When they've picked clean the last of the unfortunate slowpokes from the branches, they begin to croak, singing together in a sweet harmony that buzzes and trembles; it is both pretty and slightly painful, radiating in your jaw and humming in your bones. Things can't seem to get much weirder, when a girl of maybe 19 comes slogging up through the marsh water, red as a Corphish in the face, in shorts and a gingham shirt, a Palpitoad in her arms.

"There you are, you no good little-" she begins, chewing out the Pokémon with some choice words before realizing you and your menagerie are within earshot.
Swallowing whatever she planned to say, she stuttered a bit, before rather awkwardly amending: "These, uh... these are mine."

There is a beat of silence, and then it occurs to her that this might not be the most adequate of explanations, and so she inhales, trying to catch her breath, before trying again.

"My, um... my family runs a ranch. We raise Seismitoad. These got out. I gotta take 'em back," she explains, a bit more coherently, though her sentences are abrupt and nervous. She stares at you for several seconds, before turning wordlessly to the tree where her errant Pokémon cling. She tries to urge them off, and back towards where they came, but they ignore her, now grooming their faces with tongue and forefeet after their meal.

What will you do?

You concoct a plan to both assert dominance, and get under the drunkard's skin. The Mawile obeys your orders, taking the Pangoro's paw in his own with a grip suiting of a Steel-type such as himself; it's firm, too much so, but the Pangoro is a big girl and she squeezes back tightly, with enough for to break brick. She doesn't mean to hurt him, of course, she just doesn't know her own strength; the two are now locked in a vicious hand-holding, neither of which are willing to let go for very different reasons. Mawile looks a little uncomfortable with this turn of events, but he is both a consumate gentleman and eternally dutiful, and gives his new suitor a wink and a nudge before blowing her a sweet kiss, which loats up to her on winds as delicate and innocent as the wings of faeries. When it strikes her, she seems to recoil, the gesture burning her skin for some reason, but a lifetime spent weathering her body to fighting and some dark inclinations leave her perhaps a bit enticed by the strange, slightly painful experience. She leers down at him, intrigued, which catches him off guard and renders him momentarily defenseless; which is unfortunate because she's become quite worked up and takes her frustration out on him, her large body descending upon him in a crushing, amorous embrace.

The bouncer, still watching, has lost all composure and has descended into utter laughter, as the drunkard -- completely through with both your mouthiness and his Pokémon's lascivious behavior -- fishes another Pokéball from his pocket.

"I knew you were useless," he spits at the Pangoro, who looks up, startled and a bit wounded. "I never should have traded for you. Worthless, stupid, ugly fuckin'-"

At this point, the Pangoro bursts into tears. She pulls away from Mawile and buries her face in her paws, weeping loudly. The drunk rolls his eyes, and tosses his Pokéball into the air, summoning a massive creature covered in vines -- a Tangrowth. It whips the ground with its arms, ready for a fight.

"I'm sick of your mouth, bitch," the drunk slurs. It doesn't look like the Tangrowth will be nearly so easily charmed as the Pangoro, who is utterly devastated by her trainer's cruel words. Looks like you're in for a real fight this time. What will you do?

The woman stood defiant before the drunkard, while the Mawile gave the Pangoro a gentle yet firm grip of the hand, only for the bear to reciprocate with considerable force, but he was resilient and knew the gruff pokemon had a tender heart. Giving a little wink, he proceeded to blow a kiss on a fey wind to the Daunting pokemon, who recoiled a little at the sensation, a simple message that love can hurt, yet the sudden leer and embrace left him somewhat pained. However, the teasing activity had done them well, for the bouncer had went from amused to outright laughing at the shenanigans.

The drunk, however, was the complete opposite, pulling another ball from pocket as he once again verbally abused the Pangoro, and letting slip the fact he traded for her. Of course it won't listen to you, you wasted muppet, not with that attitude. With a roll of the eyes as she weeped loudly and pulled from her fleeting love, the drunk flicked forward a ball, revealing something equally intimidating and large, vines waving around everywhere, as the drunk stated his tiredness of her words in the usual eloquent manner, the Tangrowth looking much meaner and ready to fight. The Mawile made to step forward, but his ally raised a hand.

"This beast is beneath you, Bel. Such a putrid, hideous mess of a creature...this is why you should not drink, Tangrowth." She quipped, as her hand reached for inside her coat, revealing a rare crimson ball, like a sparking ruby as she enlarged it. "Nay, if the angry monkey refuses to clear off, then I shall have to...discipline it. Aken'thaal, your service is required."

Giving the cherish ball a toss, a smaller beetle emerged from the sphere, glistening gold carapace and compound eyes staring up at the significantly larger pokemon before him, the shiny Nincada was interested in facing this foe, not at all intimidated by the size.

"Aken'thaal, harden your shell to defend against any physical blows this foe possesses, before reading their mind to anticipate actions and determine weak points. When an opportunity rises, strike with leech life at a sensitive spot. Bel, do console the sorrowful Pangoro, and rise to the defence of her with will of iron to thwart any physical trauma. Remain vigilant, and be merciful to her feelings, for this pitiful example of a human being should never have taken custody of one so sensitive."

The woman remained calm and collected, though addressed the obstacle before her with the level of scorn Hell hath no fury comparable as the Nincada prepared himself for this opponent.

"Is that so?" Duke feigned ignorance as Amelie's father pointed out the implications. "In that case I offer my sincerest apologies. I did not mean to be part of an unintended scandal, nor do I wish to become a source of slander on your good name. I must insist, I'm merely a traveler who was offered a token of kindness, and I'm sure your daughter meant well. If I am not to be her guest, then perhaps you could consider me yours?" He paused to gauge his reaction, and took a bite in the process out of the portions Amelie had so considerately partitioned evenly for them both.

"Mmm, this is quite delicious, I must say... but I digress... Sir, I believe we haven't had a proper introduction. I am Balmund, of the Blackthorn family. I know not what my family name means to you, but it doesn't matter. I’ll soon be on my way, and this incident will be put behind us. Before that however, could I not at least get a tour of your estate? I’ve been told such nice things about this place. As a traveler, I might as well see for myself before I continue on my journey.”

He hoped that would be enough to divert the flow and tone the conversation was taking, and hopefully buy him an excuse to stick around for longer. He could already tell Amelie’s father was likely prone to having a short fuse and zero tolerance for nonsense, but as a noble, he should at least show the bare minimum and superficial courtesy to entertain his guest… right?

Meanwhile, Iskra seemed quite pleased by the treatment she was getting from Brantley. The way he just whacked Yuki like that? He didn’t hold back at all! Yes, this was just the kind of playmate that would do nicely for her, where ‘playmate’ is better defined as victim by normal conventions. She took a glance at Yuki, then back at Brantley, and giggled ominously, before fading out into the ether, out of view, her laughter still ringing loud and clear. It was time for mischief.

Staring at a bunch of Spinarak as he tried to back him and his Pokemon off, it just occurred to Hyrem that the food he left there wouldn't be interesting to the swarm of spiders at all: by far, they preferred live prey over scavenging, so it was understandable that when they all started running towards them he was concerned the swarm was about to exhibit predatory aggression...but they passed by them too? That meant they were running from something, not to their intruders, but what were they running from?

That answer made a loud impact against the huge tree they were near, followed by five more just like it as six large, blue amphibians hugged the tree licking up whatever Spinarak they could catch into their wide mouths.
"Whoa, they're huge!" Hyrem said with awe. "What are those things anyway?" Pulling out his Pokedex, he scanned the closest one for answers:

Seismitoad, the Vibration Pokemon. The bumps on the back of their hands can amplify the power of their punches, making them able to destroy large boulders as soon as even one fist finds purchase against them. The bumps on their foreheads excrete a potent poison that debilitates their opponent enough so they can use their melee attacks against them.

"Wow, they seem pretty strong! And pretty hungry too," he remarked, watching the toads continue to lap up spiders until they were all either inside their stomachs or had escaped a toady doom. After they finished swallowing their last victims, they began to bellow a low, loud croak of triumph that vibrated everything around them, including Hyrem and his Pokemon, bothering Wendy enough to lift herself off the ground a bit in order to avoid the shaking from the chorus while everyone else had to endure the sonic waves pulsing through them until the croaking subsided.

At that moment, another new face stormed in, this one a girl about Hyrem's age in short pants and shirt holding a Pokemon looking similar to the Seismitoad but smaller and with no arms. "That looks just like the others, but what is it?" he asked, consulting Dexelle once again:

Palpitoad, the Vibration Pokemon, and the pre-evolved form of Seismitoad. Able to live both in water and on land, it can vibrate the bumps on its head so it can attack with waves of water or land-disrupting earthquakes. Its long tongue can shoot out and stick onto any target, rendering the prey immobile before pulling it into its mouth.

"There you are, you no good little-" she's about to go off on the Seismitoad before she discovers Hyrem's presence along with his Pokemon, her demeanor changing accordingly to a more reserved one before adding, "These, uh... these are mine." There's a rather awkward pause until she sees fit to explain more: "My, um... my family runs a ranch. We raise Seismitoad. These got out. I gotta take 'em back."

She then tries to reign in the larger amphibians but to no avail as they are busy wiping and licking their faces, likely searching for the last taste of Spinarak that may be around their lips, and Hyrem couldn't help but wonder how he might be able to help her. Wendy and Amethyst could battle (and Rayquaza knows they were itching for a fight), but it would likely prove difficult against six Seismitoad. He looked to Henrietta, who was still poking her head above his shoulder; while she was slightly interested in meeting Pokemon who were similar to her, she was generally shy, and she was worried especially because she was small enough to easily fit right inside any one of their mouths and they could see her as a snack just like the Spinarak were. Likewise, Nissa and Sorano's small sizes gave them similar concerns about being slurped up by the Seismitoad, while the mother-daughter Seviper pair tensed up, ready to pump venom into the frogs should they try anything against them. The only one who felt confident enough to stand up to a bunch of Water-types was Wendy, and Hyrem didn't trust her not to get into a frenzy and burn down the forest trying to battle them.

He then remembered the food laying on the ground and had an idea. "Hey, do you think we can use the food over here to lure them to wherever your farm is?" he asked the girl. "It's just a bunch of pre-killed stuff, maybe they're still hungry enough to want it!" Wendy huffed at the notion of sharing the food; first Spinarak, now a bunch of fat frogs? They could probably stand to lose some weight, let her gain it all! She dare not complain further, however, lest she get sucked into her Dragon Ball and be without a meal that way.

Those had been the most terrifying minutes of Rorik’s life, but somehow, it was all over. He watched as Munchlax, the one he’d always considered a hopeless bumbling fool, did not just do as he was instructed – he outright destroyed the attacking forces while keeping his partner safe. After this turn of events, he’d never look at his partner the same way.

”My” partner… is he really? This frightening strength, all but untapped – it’s none of my doing. He belonged to Gottfried, our Champion; he was raised by Heiml’s “Norse God”, not me. Such potential… is it not wasted on a clueless man like me? The only other time I see him this happy is when he’s eating – he thoroughly enjoyed beating those Rattata, like battling is in his blood… Am I just holding him back?

Up until that point, Rorik used to think the exact opposite: that it was the bear who was dragging him down. But seeing such a display of power made him reassess Munchlax’s true worth – and just how utterly worthless he, the Trainer, had been in the end.
Further eating away at his shattered self-confidence was the fact that he’d allowed Staryu to be severely injured, and one of the Gourgeist’s eggs to be desecrated. With a heavy heart, he first turned his attention to his starfish, dropping to one knee and calling it over.

“I’m so sorry for putting you in danger like this,” he whispered, voice trembling with emotion. “Here, take this, it’ll ease the pain.”

Retrieving a small vial from his Bag, Rorik sprayed the Super Potion on the nasty-looking wounds, hoping to remedy his own mistake. Then, as he prepared to administer the same care to Munchlax, he spotted the bear heartily chewing away on a Soft-Boiled egg of his own conjuring.

He was raised by a Champion; he doesn’t need me. How foolish of me to think otherwise.

Still, he could not bring himself to carry on like nothing had happened. Empty of meaning as they might sound coming from someone like him, the Professor walked over to the recovered Munchlax and patted him on the head, granting him an honest smile.

“I… Well… You did good,” he stammered clumsily. “More than good. You were outstanding! Th-thank you. And… sorry about before.”

It was hard to forget that he’d just tackled and berated the bear mere moments earlier, but it seemed the events had completely slipped Munchlax’s mind already, whose expression changed from confused to endearingly cheerful in a matter of seconds.

The bone-chilling wailing of the Gourgeist couple seemed never-ending, a knife made of consolidated guilt stabbing Rorik in the chest over and over again. He could do nothing for them, nobody could save perhaps for the life-giving deities of the Pokémon World. Yet, this was simply nature running its course; it would be unreasonable to expect a miraculous manifestation of either Xerneas or Arceus in this instance. No, the parents would just have to carry the pain with them…

“I… I wish I could do more,” Rorik found himself whispering, unsure if either Gourgeist could hear him above their own crying. “I’m sorry. But…”

Am I stepping out of line here?...

“… but you still have your other eggs. Your other children,” he continued, drawing from some unseen fountain of either courage or stupidity to give life lessons to the undead. “You can take that pain, that sorrow, and turn them into dedication to raise the ones that could be saved as best you can!”

Rorik knew he was playing with fire – he’d always lacked the ability to empathize, and trying to do so with angry ghosts could prove costly – but something moved him to keep going. Was it a need for self-justification, or genuine pain for their loss?

“I don’t know what it’s like to lose a child,” he admitted, despite knowing what it felt like to lose a mother, “but you didn’t lose them all. Try… try to hold on to the ones that made it. W-with all due respect.”

He’d had enough of this place, of death, conflict and loss. Of feeling worthless when it really mattered. And besides, he should give room for the parents to mourn their loss. All in all, this was the time to go.

Rorik turned around and signalled for Munchlax and Staryu to follow him, but before he did, his eyes fell on the fainted Rattata who couldn’t flee along with the rest. If left there, who knows what the grieving Gourgeist would do to it in retaliation…

A normal Trainer would probably try to capture it… Heh. I truly am pitiful.

He couldn’t do it – not only did he care very little for rats, he didn’t know enough about bonds to welcome another creature into his party, let alone who he beat into unconsciousness. Furthermore, the gruesome image of the rodent devouring that unborn Pumpkaboo was one he could neither erase nor ignore. All in all, normal Trainers would try to capture it… but Rorik wanted nothing to do with the egg-eater. However, it didn’t mean he was heartless; reaching into the confines of his Bag once more, he pulled out an Oran Berry and left it in front of the knocked-out Pokémon. It’d probably welcome the little boost of energy to escape the nest when it regained its senses…

A writer once said that the night was dark and full of terrors, and Rorik was inclined to agree – he’d already seen a share of them, and it wasn’t even particularly dark yet: the angry Gourgeist, the famished Rattata, the arrow…

The arrow…

He’d forgotten about it in the heat of battle, but now that it crossed his mind, he never did get around to clarifying the arrow’s mystery. What was worse – he still didn’t know how safe it was to roam the forest with an archer nearby. And yet, he and his team had to go somewhere… but where to?

A wide variety of Pokémon call the relatively untamed wilderness home, while a city stands at the heart of it all, known far and wide as a bastion of revelry and sin.

Le Marais Sacré de Celebi
Marécage Noir is shrouded in dark clouds seemingly endlessly, but there is one place for which the sky is always clear: the sacred swamp of Celebi. Though the water is dark with tannins, it doesn't ever seem to stagnate. It's cool to the touch, with a pleasant, earthy smell. Thick trees, seemingly older than time itself, grow from its dark depths, with gnarled trunks and twisty roots which jut up at odd angles. Here, a plethora of Pokémon can be found of all sorts of types; Bug, Flying, Grass, Water -- even some Poison types call this ethereal swamp their home. The sun is seemingly always shining here. Named for the Mythical Pokémon Celebi, there is a legend that this area thrives so beautifully in such an otherwise dark and murky place due to the influence of the Time Travel Pokémon, and that causing harm to the sacred swamp will result in bad fortune. Locals often bring offerings of food in respect to the land and to Celebi, hoping for blessings and good favor, and even perhaps a chance to meet Celebi itself. Please reply in SpringGreen.
Everything about this place - the smell of the earth, the swamp’s cool touch, the fresh breeze - is a treat to the senses. Latte lies on the ground, admiring the swaying of the leaves in the breeze and the sun shining through the canopy. The city’s always been feeding her entire being so long, she had forgotten what it truly felt like to be in the midst of nature. Being in the swamp gave her an opportunity to change her scenery, and it was rewarding after a trek through the dark forest.

Mina feels similarly tranquil. It’s a peaceful place, fit for meditation and for yoga. She found a spot by one of the trees that surrounded the swamp, holding various poses there. She’s held her focus for awhile now, and is hoping to be able to levitate long enough by the end of the trip.

Mina is in an Indian sit position, taking deep breaths with her eyes shut. She focuses on nothing but the cool breeze and the sound of rustling trees. By the second, she feels less of the ground below her, feeling lighter each time, as the wind and the rustle - and faint footsteps - seem to disappear altogether--

“Plup plup!”

Chachi crashes into Mina, who falls to the ground face first. “Plup!” Chachi cheers, fins raised. Mina, still flat on the ground, growls. “I was already doing it!”

“Pip plup!” Stop that for a sec! This place is great and also kinda weird!

Mina heaves a sigh before she returns to her previous position. Although miffed, she calmly turns to Chachi. “I’m in the middle of my meditation.”

“Plup plup!” But there’s so much to see!

Contrast to his companions, Chachi is a lot more jumpy. He sees this trip as an adventure, eager to reach their destination, or whatever the outcome of this would be. He’s spent all their time here walking (or running) through the trees, waiting for something to happen. Something. Anything.

Chachi continues to bother Mina, pushing her to explore with him. Mina, however, sits still (and fails to), refusing to budge. “Plup plup plup!” Come on, come on, come on! “Shhh, Chachi,” Latte says. “Let her meditate.”

Chachi stomps his foot and storms off. “Plup!” Fine, do what you want! There's much exploring to do, and Chachi can't just sit around and wait.

Latte took the both on this trip so they can bond. So far, they haven’t. She begins to wonder if this was a right choice. Maybe Celebi would help me out. Or not. Shaking off the worry about how Mina and Chachi’s camaraderie would work ever, she shuts her eyes and merely focuses on gentle rustle of the leaves.

Sandaa: [Update Music] + Atmosphere
The wind seemed to have calmed, and the rain had turned into a somewhat tranquil drizzle. Thunder rumbled gently in the distance, but was quieter than normal, perhaps a sign that the storm was finally beginning to pass. For the first time in hours, sunlight pierced the clouds, and a narrow beam of light shined directly onto the bag like something out of a fairy tale. For that brief moment, you became filled with a sense of warmth and optimism unlike one you had felt since you had first arrived in the black marsh, and the sea seemed to react in kind as well, the waves slowly beginning to mellow out in sync with the piercing rays of the sunlight.

Aero, the trusty manta ray Pokemon, sprung forth from the Pokeball, gliding across the surface of the water. You snapped on a pair of goggles and slid onto your Pokemon’s back, holding on tightly. With each roll of the ocean’s tide, the bag drifted further and further from the shore. The Mantine dove through the surface of the sea with great force, cutting through the water like a hot knife through butter. The sea was a dark teal and bubbly, making it difficult to see too far ahead of you. After a few moments, Aero dashed forward, slicing through the water effortlessly and turning its aim upward. As the Mantine re-surfaced, the bag appeared just out of reach, but in just a matter of moments, in an almost supernatural turn of events, the atmosphere had become completely different.

The sky had become incredibly dark. Blankets of rain began to fall from the pitch-black clouds, each droplet striking the now turbulent ocean with great force. The wind had become incredibly blustery, bellowing over the ocean with considerable impetus. The waves became larger and heavier, smashing against the now distant rocky coast harder than ever, briny seafoam exploding over the shoreline with every crash of the angry sea. Despite this, you had one objective in mind: Retrieve the bag at all costs. Fighting the undertow, Aero skipped across the waves, giving you just enough of a gap to reach your arm forward and snatch the strap of the bag with as strong of a grip as you could muster.

Chain lightning cracked tore through the clouds above, and thunder cracked like a tree snapping in two.

“Why...?”

A swirling gust of wind enveloped you as a woman’s voice echoed through your head.

“I have so much left to do… I didn’t even get to say goodbye…”

The voice was sobbing in agony, and the rain whipped across the sea harder and harder as you began to lift the bag out of the water.

“Why did it have to turn out like this… why? Why? WHY!?”

Lightning began to pulse through the clouds consistently, almost like a heartbeat, occasionally striking the water in the distance, or a mangrove on the coast behind you. As the weather became almost hurricane-like, and the voice captivating your full attention, you hadn’t noticed the sea below you turn a dark hue. Slowly but surely, you began to rise upward out of the ocean - something underneath of you had lifted you into the air, and showed no signs of stopping.

“It isn’t fair… my heart… I had so much to give… so much to do… IT ISN’T FAIR!”

The creature beneath you roared ferociously. Analyzing the situation, Aero took charge and leapt into the air, sliding down the side of the sea monster and launching off of a fin and into the sea below.

The darkness made it difficult to make out its figure, though small orange glows seemed to radiate from it, peppering its entire being and giving it a somewhat fish-like shape. The wind curled around the rain above the monster, forming an odd shape in the air - it appeared to be a girl, curled up into a fetal position. The sound of sobbing filled your head. After a moment, she lifted her face from what appeared to be her knees, and screamed into the air in sync with another booming roar from the sea creature before her image disappeared into a swirl of water.

Lighting cracked, illuminating the monster’s face as it continued to grow in size.

Spoiler: show

What sat before you, roaring once more in what sounded like violent agony, was a Wishiwashi - but it was much larger than any schooling Wishiwashi you had ever heard of, and it only continued to grow, more and more of the fish Pokemon leaping out of the sea and merging into the giant monster. But this Wishiwashi was not only unusual due to its enormous, continually growing size, no - its color seemed to be different than what you had remembered as well, being a darker blue than normal, and its illuminated appendages being colored orange as opposed to white.

And then, the creature seemed to stop growing. The wind tore the rain through the air with intense power, each droplet beginning to slightly sting as it connected with your face. The creature turned its gaze to you, and roared once more. It was so intimidating, so incredibly large - it must have at least been the size of a small building. At least! It slowly turned toward you, appearing to have full control of the ocean around it as it swung its immense body with ease, drawing you into focus. The rain was falling so hard now and in such large quantities that it became difficult to see anything more than the behemoth’s outline through the wall of water.

“I had so much left to accomplish… so much left to do… it wasn’t supposed to end for me this way… why did the world do this to me? Why did this have to happen? Why did I have to die? Why? I want to live again… I want to live…. I want to live… please… this has to be a nightmare… let me wake up… Daddy, please… help me…” The voice was softer, gently whipping through the wind as you gripped tighter onto Aero’s back. It was otherworldly - a mix of a young girl’s voice with an older woman’s, and a deep demonic-sounding angst accompanying it as well.

The large shiny fish Pokemon smashed its fins into the water, kicking up a giant explosion of waves that began to roll toward you with intense energy. For a moment, you were almost sure that the Pokemon had a Tearful Look in its eyes, and your heart briefly tugged with a pang of deep sorrow for it. It roared viciously once again, and water began pooling inside of its hollow mouth as it opened up wide, swallowing up the sea around it, looking as though it was ready to unleash a vicious attack at its target: you.

Missingno Master: [Update Music]
Down but not out, Meowth wasted no time getting back onto his feet. The Combee’s Endeavor was incredibly strong, as she had definitely taken a huge hit from the Ancient Power from earlier. In fact, it almost seemed like she had let it happen…

Meowth waved his paw through the air, drawing a current of water out of the swamp. He swung his paws through the air in a circular motion, turning the stream of water into a circular shape and thrusting forward to attack the ringleader full force with a Water Pulse. The water sloshed through the air, hitting the Combee at full force. She tumbled backward through the air, from the attack, quickly drying off her wings by flapping them furiously through the wind. The Combee was as angry as ever, launching herself through the tall grass like a missile and directly into the Meowth, biting his tail with a vicious Bug Bite. Meowth recoiled by shaking the bee Pokemon off, sending her flying through the air toward a tree.

She beat her wings ferociously once more, keeping herself upright and preventing a potentially dangerous impact. She was tired, and it was beginning to show - her reaction time was beginning to slow. Meowth once more lifted his paws into the air, drawing more water from the pond behind him. This time, however, it lifted up as dozens of tiny water droplets, crystallizing into ice. Meowth lunged his paws forward, and a wicked breeze swept in, carrying the Icy Wind toward his enemy and striking the Pokemon for an immense amount of damage. She fell to the ground, breathing heavily. She fluttered her wings a bit, lifting herself out of the grass, but she looked tired.

Meanwhile, Colin was growing tired as well, having battled the group of the female’s goons with multiple Bug Buzzes and Air Slashes, finding it difficult to face the whole group six on one. It didn’t help that the Yanmega hadn’t had much battle experience, and being at such a low level, it made it difficult to take on so many enemies at once. They say that power comes in numbers, and despite each Combee being fairly weak on an individual basis, as a group, they were giving Colin a fairly difficult time in their back and forth battle. Finally, two of the Combee fell onto lily pads in the pond, knocked out from two Air Slashes hitting them head on.

The female Combee facing Meowth wasn’t about to give up, despite having taken such a beating. You were so engrossed by the two battles going on at once that you hadn’t even noticed the Melitologist standing next to you when she spoke up. “Astonishing,” she said with a Kalosian accent, “it’s almost like this female has something to prove. Any normal Combee would have fainted already, but this one… she keeps fighting no matter what the odds are. She is no ordinary Combee, that is for sure.” Almost as if on cue, the female beat her wings, pounding them hard against the air and blowing forth a Gust of wind in retaliation to your Meowth’s previous attack. The slicing wind was a little painful for the talking cat Pokemon, but he was able to withstand it nonetheless.

Meowth began to focus and the charm on his forehead started glowing. Bursts of static electricity engulfed the amulet as he prepared to finish off his enemy with a Thunderbolt. Colin, tired and distracted by attack after attack from the four remaining Combee minions, didn’t notice when one of them slipped by, darting over Meowth from behind. It seemed dead set on doing whatever it could to aid its leader. As a result, things didn’t go quite as it had expected. Meowth discharged the electricity from his charm, sending the lightning flying through the air toward the female leader. The minion Combee flew out of nowhere, ramming into its leader head on, knocking her out of the way, immediately becoming electrocuted by the attack and falling to the ground unmoving. Upon seeing this, one of the Combee minions Colin was fighting cried out in anger, distracted, eating a direct hit from an Air Slash as a result, knocking it out. The remaining two Combee, both extremely tired and beat up, zoomed off over the swamp, retreating from the battle and cowardly abandoning their leader. The Melitologist stared at the battles, fascinated by everything that was happening. Suddenly, the female jolted forth, crying out, whipping through the air and smacking into Meowth once more with another Endeavor. The cat Pokemon cried out as it somersaulted backwards and into the swamp, severely damaged by the attack, but not knocked out. The female was breathing extremely heavily, panting and barely keeping herself from falling to the ground. “Buzzeee…” she cried in a desperate tone. “This is incredible,” the Melitologist said under her breath. “How is she even still able to move?”

Neverthrive - [Update Music]
Enchanted by the music, Greg decided he wanted to reveal himself to the mysterious orchestra of Pokemon, excited to rush out and greet them as you brushed aside the overgrowth to announce your presence.

“Stop!” Someone whispered loudly, grabbing your arm. Greg immediately halted, turning around to see the source of the voice. It was an older man, dressed in an odd purple outfit that resembled some sort of ritual costume. He wore a mask that resembled an oni, with long magenta hair flowing from the back, a golden circle engraved on his forehead, and two long black horns jutting from each side that resembled those of a Bouffalant. He lifted the mask to reveal himself. “Don’t interfere, or the consequences could be devastating. Come, this way.”

The man retreated from the brush and back onto the trail from which you had just come. Two others, also in costume, stood on the pathway. One wore a green outfit with a mask that covered only the top half of their face, and a long, see-through glittering cape thrown loosely over their shoulders that seemed to resemble pixie wings. The other wore a maroon outfit that clearly resembled a Kricketune, much like the one you had just seen performing and conducting for the other Pokemon. Each of them lifted their masks as well. They didn’t look amused. “We’re from La Ville des Farceurs et Voleurs - the City of Jesters and Thieves. Our camp is set up just down the trail - we can tell you’re not from around these parts -”

“Yeah, I’ll say,” the green-clad woman interrupted sarcastically.

The man continued. “... Anyway, if you come with us, we can explain everything, and we’ll do our best to answer any questions you may have… and I’m sure you have questions,” the original man who had found you said. “We’ll take it from here, Enzo,” the Kricketune-looking man said, looking upward at a tree. A man you hadn’t noticed before was sitting in a tree above you, and he blended in exceptionally well. He appeared to be dressed in costume as well, one that resembled a Decidueye. Enzo nodded silently in acknowledgment. He must have seen you entering and warned the others… probably.

It seemed pretty odd that all of these people were dressed in costumes, on top of the already odd fact that there were dozens of Pokemon playing a symphony in the middle of a forest. The situation definitely seemed weird, and getting some answers as to just what was going on might be a good place to start… of course, whatever you chose to do was ultimately up to you.

The psithurism of the forest canopy - the sound of the leaves brushing against each other as the wind ran through them rhythmically - was one of the most freeing and relaxing sounds in the world. The sound at its core was pure comfort, peace, and harmony. It is a sound that, somehow, can give one feelings of protection and shelter. It can leave one totally vulnerable to nature while at the same time allowing one to be completely surrounded by it. That comfort was all you had focused on as you lay spread on the forest floor, trying to leave behind any concerns about whether or not Chachi and Mina would ever accept each other as teammates.

That sound was all that you needed, for the time being. This was truly the most peaceful feeling in the world… and then the psithurism stopped. That’s odd… why did it stop?

You opened your eyes.

The sky was dark. The leaves were gone. The trees were rotted away, and the grassy forest floor was nothing but scorched Earth. The swamp was dried up, and your Pokemon were nowhere in sight. There was nothing but death and decay, and it was everywhere.

You blinked again, and everything was as it had been. Mina and Chachi stared at you with concerned looks, and the sound of the wind brushing through the treetops once more enveloped your being. Looking around, it was like nothing had changed. What was that? What had you just seen? It must have just been a dream… you must have drifted off. Yes, that was the most likely answer. Occam’s Razor, and whatnot. It was almost certainly just a nightmare.

You looked up at the canopy once more. The trees gently swayed in the wind, moving back and forth, their branches brushing against each other. You closed your eyes for a moment, and then reopened them again. Everything was still normal… everything except the white, canid-like creature perched on the tree branch at the bottom of your vision. Its eyes were wide and blood red, and it felt as though it was staring into your very soul. Becoming extremely unsettled, you closed your eyes and opened them once more; the Pokemon was gone, but you noticed a fresh set of paw prints in the dirt near you, trailing off the main pathway and into the darker depths of the forest…

"Meowth! Water Pulse!" Keith commanded.

"Comin' right up!" Meowth grinned, drawing water from the nearby swamp to form his attack. He sent the blast of water at Combee, landing a direct hit, but by no means deterring the Bug/Flying-type. Indeed, her retaliation was swift as she landed a Bug Bite on Meowth's tail. "EEEOWWCH!" Meowth exclaimed, frantically shaking off the Tiny Bee Pokémon. This sent her hurtling towards a tree, but most impressively, some very timely wing flapping helped her to avoid impact. Even so, though, Keith could see that the battle was beginning to wear on the determined insect, dulling her reaction time.

The advantage seemed to belong to them, or if it didn't, it soon would. Either way, Keith was unwilling to let up at this point. "Now! Use Icy Wind!" he ordered.

"Youse needs ta chill out!" Meowth quipped, sending a frigid gust of wind Combee's way. This actually got the Bug/Flying-type tumbling to the ground, though she still got back up. And as this happened, Keith turned to check on Colin.

"Keep it up, Colin!" Keith called encouragingly, for at that moment, two Combee had fallen, courtesy of the Yanmega's Air Slash. "You're doing great!"

"Yan... ya..." panted Colin, tired but determined. Not unlike the female Combee Keith was facing, in fact, a train of thought which got his attention right back on the battle.

Keith jumped a bit- the melitologist from before? She was now right next to Keith, remarking with great interest on the Combee's resolve and determination. Keith nodded his agreement. "Yeah... it's not often I see a Pokémon so full of fighting spirit," he agreed. Had Meowth looked back at his Trainer, he might have groaned audibly, considering the all-too-familiar gleam in Keith's eye at that moment. But he didn't- Combee was now using Gust, and Meowth couldn't afford to divert his attention from the fight for so much as a second. "Come on, Meowth!" Keith called encouragingly. "Fight back with Thunderbolt!"

Meowth grinned, his charm sparking like a Pikachu's cheeks. But as he fired off a sizzling Thunderbolt attack, one of the males pushed the female out of the way, bravely intercepting the electric attack, and immediately fainting as a result. This coincided with Colin knocking out another Combee, which in turn was followed by the remaining males hauling stinger as far away from the Yanmega as their wings could carry them.

Keith eyed the one remaining Combee who was still conscious. The female. The one who suddenly charged at Meowth, lashing out with yet another Endeavor. "Meowth!" Keith exclaimed, for this seemed to hit him very hard.

"Gah..." Meowth panted, shakily climbing back to his feet. "How's dat... Combee... still conscious?!" he demanded. The melitologist seemed to be wondering the same thing, and Keith was pretty curious as well. But mostly he was impressed. The Combee had taken great damage. By all rights, enough damage to knock out an ordinary Combee. But this, as the melitologist so keenly observed, was clearly no ordinary Combee.

"You did good, Meowth," Keith stated, as he dug his right hand into his backpack. "But I'll take over now."

"Eh?" Meowth said, turning to look at Keith. "...Oh, no. No, no, no, youse can't be serious-"

"That Combee is something special," Keith stated, grinning as Meowth reacted to the gleam in his eye. "I know I'd love working with a determined Pokémon like that."

"Oy..." Meowth groaned, far too tired to seriously contemplate talking Keith out of this course of action.

With his left hand, Keith turned his hat backwards, while he finally drew his right hand out of his backpack, only now it was clutching a turquoise-and-white ball, with a crisscrossed black pattern on the turquoise half- the first of the two he'd won at that new shop that opened recently. "Alright!" he declared, pressing the button to bring the Net Ball to its full size, before bringing his right arm back. "Go, Net Ball!" And with these words, he heaved the sphere directly at the severely weakened Combee.

*Keith used Net Ball!*

((OOC: Thank you so much!!! uwu))

Silence.

The sound of leaves rustling fades out all of a sudden. Latte opens her eyes, thinking maybe the wind stopped blowing for a bit. The canopy is gone. She now beholds a dark sky above her, and tree branches, as if the leaves wilted and were blown away.

Latte quickly sits up and looks around. In front of her, the swamp is dry, like it was never there. Around her, the trees look withered, and she is only seated on a grassless earth, scorched and lifeless. Also, Mina isn’t there by the tree she was just meditating at. Even Chachi, who was making a futile attempt to drag the Meditite in his wanderings, isn’t present.

Latte’s heart races in panic. She gets up and turns away from the now-dry swamp. “Chachi? Mina? Guys?” she calls out, fruitlessly. When she blinks, the scene returns to what it was. Confused, Latte looks around again: the greenery is back and the swamp is there again. Her eyes are fixated on the swamp. What just happened? Maybe it was a nightmare? But the swift transition was crystal clear, and she was standing there. Then again, she must have drifted off. It’s just a bad dream. Just a bad dream. A bad dream. A bad dream. A bad dream...

“Piplup!” Chachi calls out from behind her, Mina’s hand grabbing his fin. Latte comes to, and turns to her Pokemon, relieved that they were back, but nonetheless bothered by the scene moments ago. Her Pokemon’s faces are etched with worry. “Y-you guys…” she whispers. “You seem out of sorts, Latte,” Mina says, concerned. “Are you alright?”

“I…” Latte breathes in before closing her eyes for a bit, to see if this is all real. She focuses on the psithurism, waiting for it to fade. When it doesn’t, she opens her eyes. To her relief, nothing has changed.

But in the corner of her eye, she sees something white perched on a tree. She turns to look at it, and gasps: it’s white and fox-like. What bothers her is its eyes, wide and red as blood, and Latte freezes in place, feeling as if the creature is staring right into her soul. She shuts her eyes abruptly, and the fox-like creature is gone.

What’s going on?

“Latte!” Mina shouts; she normally doesn’t, but there’s something off about her trainer, who’s usually alert. Latte gasps again, looking at the Meditite. “I-I’m sorry,” she stammers. “T-There was something and I--”

“Piplup!” Chachi exclaims, pointing to paw prints on the ground. Latte bends down to observe them. They look fresh; whatever it was, was just there. Her eyes follow those footprints to the trees. “Guys…” she says, standing up. “Stay close to me. You know, just so you’re safe.” She says it nonchalantly, but the slight tremble in her voice can’t be missed.

“Adventure?” Chachi’s eyes light up as he looks at the footprints. Mina lightly slaps him on his shoulder. “Hey! We’re here to look after Latte. This forest is no good. We need to find out what’s going on.” Chachi, remembering Latte’s weird behavior, sighs, then shrugs. “Still an adventure.” However, he goes up to Latte and reaches his fin to her hand. Latte looks to Chachi, still looking worried. “Thanks Chachi.” She then turns to Mina. “Thank you too Mina.” Mina nods in response, and moves to Latte’s side opposite Chachi.

With Latte following the direction of the footprints, and Chachi and Mina constantly looking around for anything that might transpire, the trio cautiously walk toward the trees, their environment increasingly darkening the farther they get from the swamp.
