Shroomish Schala's Team Bios

Name: Schala
Sex: Female
Age: 16

Schala spent most of her young life indoors, reading. Eventually, her parents became fed up, and decided that she needed to "see the world" and "make some friends" and kicked her out with only some basic supplies and a Pokeball containing her first Pokemon. Schala was not amused by this turn of events, but having little choice, she set out on an "adventure", hoping that her parents would be more reasonable in a month or so. Her battle experience is nonexistent, and she had little exposure to Pokemon (barring her mother's Glameow and her father's Sunflora) beyond seeing them from her window. Really, she's just lucky that her starter has the patience of a saint.
---

Hecate
Houndour
Female

Hecate is a rather cheerful Pokemon, and surprisingly patient when her trainer is an idiot. She enjoys being rather silly, especially when her trainer finds it amusing, but equally enjoys attempting to set anyone "bothering" her trainer on fire, much to said trainer's distress, as the two have very different definitions of "bothering".
---

Airmid
Shroomish
Female

Airmid is a gentle soul, who enjoys giving people small plant-based trinkets, cheering up the sad, and trying to help the injured. She was left alone, without a trainer. Schala, despite having no idea how to actually be a trainer (nor intending to stay a trainer for more than a month or two), couldn't leave the adorable little thing alone, so she adopted her. Hecate is a bit jealous of the attention Airmid is receiving as a new addition, but Airmid is oblivious to Hecate's dislike, and showers Hecate with gifts and kindness. Such confounding behavior might just win Hecate over in the end. Maybe.

Airmid now has a groupie and another friend from her adventure in the Friend Safari. Her apprentice shares her love of giving gifts, but tends to take a Ghostly spin on it, because tricks are just as nice to get as treats are, right?

While the Tyrunt she met in the Friend Safari did not end up tagging along, it did give her something to remember it by: one of its teeth. Airmid has, with the help of her trainer in gathering materials, made it into a necklace. Schala wears it because Airmid can't until she evolves.
---

Uttu
Joltik
Female

This adorable little bug type was given to Schala by a shady completely normal young trainer with no ulterior motives whatsoever. Schala soon discovered that said adorable little bug type really only liked to do one thing: make huge electrified webs everywhere. Including once on Hecate while she was sleeping. After putting out the fires, Schala decided to find something safe for the newest member of the party to make webs on. Maybe a ground type.
---

Freya
Taillow
Female

Freya might be small, but she makes up for it with a surprising amount of blood lust. Schala is wholly unprepared for this fact. This is probably really entertaining to bystanders. It is less fun for Schala and Freya's targets.

Despite her viciousness when it comes to strangers, Freya seems to at least tolerate Schala and the rest of the team. Or at least she hasn't tried to Peck any of their eyes out yet.
---

Amphitrite
Spheal
Female
---

Nero
Nidoran
Male
---

Apate
Large Pumpkaboo
Female

Encountered in the Friend Safari, she quickly grew attached to Airmid's friendly attitude and ended up joining the group. She idolizes Airmid and her gift giving, but prefers a different sort of gifts. Unfortunately for everyone involved said gifts tend to fluctuate between candy and small sometimes creepy trinkets, and 'harmless' pranks.
---

???
Sewaddle
Male
---

Ajax
Poochyena
Male

A huge coward. Schala has been trying to figure out how to give him a little courage, mostly because she keeps tripping over him while he cowers behind her. His name is one such failed attempt. (Also, terror is not the correct response to Airmid's gifts, and only the correct response to a certain Pumpkaboo's about half the time. And a sad Airmid is not fun to deal with.) Oddly enough, a chance interaction with Freya the bloodthirsty Taillow resulted in a strange sort of friendship instead of horrible violence, which at least means that Schala is tripping less. Hopefully they rub off on each other, and both end up a little better adjusted.
---

Erebos
Gastly
Male

Schala isn't sure exactly what unsettles her about her most recent Ghost type. It might be the strange calm and quiet that seems to characterize him, which is so different from the pranks and plotting of her Pumpkaboo and often attributed to Gastly. Or it could be the sense of impending dread that she feels in his company, especially when alone with him. (It isn't the kind of dread that comes from mixing Hecate or Freya with strangers, nor the kind felt when a mischievous Pumpkaboo offers her a 'gift'.) Perhaps it is nothing. Perhaps the shivers down her spine and the lead in her stomach are simply a reaction to his typing. Only time will tell.
---

Ulysses
Rufflet
Male

Ulysses is a natural born leader, or at least he thinks he is. Unfortunately for him, no one else thinks so. He might have a good grasp of tactics and command, but leading only works when others decide to follow you. Or at least, you know, listen to you and take you seriously? It's an uphill battle to prove himself worthy of respect, and of the title he is trying to claim.
---

Aegis
Furfrou
Female

Proud of her ancestors' role as "Guardians of the King" in the region she is originally from, this Furfrou prefers an untrimmed coat, since it helps protect her from damage (and thus, helps protect her charge). Hoping to live up to the legendary deeds of past Guardians, she has set out on a quest to experience the world and grow more prepared to ward off danger on behalf of her future charge. She sometimes gets a little overzealous with the protection, though.
---

???
Wimpod
Male

Hatched from the egg Schala and Aegis found during the Springtime Event.

Purrloin

Eskil
Sex: Male
Age: Unknown (presumed late teens/early twenties)

Woke up in a burning village surrounded by the dead, with no memory of what came before. He has set out to discover who he is and what happened to himself and the village, along with a Purrloin who was there when he awoke.
---

Nyx
Purrloin
Female
The first living thing Eskil saw upon waking up. Holds a special place in his heart as a result, if only as a symbol of his quest to find himself. Exudes an air of confidence and knowledge that may or may not be fake. She seems especially fond of acting mysterious, but how much she actually knows about Eskil’s past and situation is debatable. She certainly isn’t telling.
---

Syn
Murkrow
Female
---

???
Sneasel
Female

A very jumpy Pokemon. It is a bad idea to sneak up on her, as she has very sharp claws and her first reaction to being surprised is to lash out. Very distrustful, occasionally to the point of paranoia. The group quickly learned to not sneak up on her. And to tune out the conspiracy theories.

---

Beliel
Houndour
Male
---

Arawn
Deino
Male
The so called ‘monster of the mountain’, or at least one possibility for it. Very polite, up until he eats you (you being food doesn’t excuse rudeness, after all). Cares about keeping up to date about happenings in his territory, so he joins the group to discover more about what destroyed the forest village, and whether it could become a threat to him.
---

???
Scyther
Male
---

???
Seel
Male
---

???
Shinx
Male

Eskil was drawn into the adoption center to find this Pokemon. While the feeling that drew him there was odd, it pales in the face of the Shinx that was at the other end. He appears to be mute, or at least has refused to speak so far. In fact, most of his current interaction with the group consists of staring at them. Still, Eskil hopes that the pull he felt means that the small electric Pokemon holds some key to his past. Only time will tell.

Rising From the Ashes

He wakes to fire and ash and static in his head and her shadow standing over him. The fire burns to his left. He can feel the heat of it on his side. In front of him–and to the right, dismal remains of buildings and lives smolder, reduced to nothing but ash and memory. She waits, patient and regal, sitting on a crumbling stone wall near the fire.

He does not recognize her. He does not recognize this place. He does not recognize himself. Feeling the weight of his stare, she turns her head to face him fully. Her tail twitches and the light the fire casts lends her an air of mystery (helped along by his confusion). As they gaze at each other, the static in his head wanes. She speaks.

-----------------------------

Her name is Nyx. This place once had a name, but this place is now nothing more than a ruin. What use is a name to it now?

She calls him 'Awakened Dreamer', ‘Anointed by Ash’, and 'Wandering Star' when he asks her if she knows who he is and it does not feel unfamiliar. (This makes him uneasy, because those are not names, only ominous titles.)

He examines himself in the light of the fire. Strange black lines (tattoos, the voice in his head that stays silent when he asks "who am I where am I where did I come from why" supplies) mar both arms, and continue up his shoulder. (They flow and join across his shoulders and lay roots down his back, his watcher supplies when he wonders about them out loud.) The tattoos are absent from his legs and chest–as are any sort of scars or injuries. (Another piece of information that makes him uneasy. Sitting untouched but for ash in the wake of so much death and destruction.)

After taking stock of himself (clad only in ripped jeans and tattoos and ash) he speaks to her again. This time he asks her "Why?" Why was he here, why was this place destroyed?

This time, her answer is vague, perhaps even evasive. She ponders on fate. She admits to not knowing if this was an act of revenge, or madness, or war. She looks slyly at him as her back arches in a luxurious stretch and she approaches slowly. Motivations of strangers are above her purview, she adds, and conspicuously stops just outside of his reach.

Her caution catches his attention. "Did I do this?" His voice is a broken rasp. (The static in his head reaches a crescendo.)

No, you did not, she responds. And despite the simple answer, something refuses to uncoil in his chest (and in his head). There is a peculiar emphasis in her voice, and it settles a coldness in him that burns. (Something is off with that answer, and it terrifies him.)

Only the crackling of the dying fire and the movement of the wind touches the desolate place for several moments. He fights conflicting urges. Run, says one. Find out what is going on, says the other.

He stands and she watches him with an aloof wariness as he paces in tight circles, never straying from the light of the fire. He stares at his hands. He stares at the mysterious dark lines that run from the back of his hand upward. They are as foreign to him as this place, and as his past.

He asks her what they mean. She responds that they don't look like they mean anything. He insists that they must. She tells him he probably just thought they were pretty. He disagrees. Vehemently. For an instant, her composure cracks. Her slim body flattens, and her fur rises. For just a moment, he thinks she will attack. Or run. (And the latter scares him more than the former.) But she gathers herself and feigns a composure that he no longer believes she has.

It reminds him that he has been assuming she knew what was going on, rather than just pretending to. He apologizes quietly. She pretends there was nothing to apologize for.

He does not wish to stay here any longer. It is hard to breathe now and the shadow of death is heavy over this place. He tells her such. And then, awkwardly, proposes she come with him. If she wants. (She is the only living thing he has seen since waking up. The only other living thing in his memory. He does not want to be alone with the fire and the dark and the static in his head right now.)

She watches him. (Stares into his soul.) He wonders what she sees. And then, with a decisive nod, she gathers herself. For the first time since waking he feels relief. She jumps. For an instant, he feels the prickle of claws on the bare skin of his shoulder. Then, she settles, draping her body around his neck.

Her fur is warm (it is a different sort of warmth than the fire) and she is blessedly alive (he can feel her tiny heart beating).

(The static is silent.)

He walks, leaving the fire for the darkness of predawn. Already the chill bites at his bare feet and chest, but the softly purring form wrapped around his neck bolsters his resolve. He steps past things that might have been homes and people and lives. (He does not look too closely. He does not know what reaction would be worse: distress, disgust, apathy, amusement, or joy. And so he decides not to find out.)

The waning fire gives him some illumination, and the sharp eyes of his new companion warn him of what he cannot see. He is lost, but confident he will make it to the coming dawn. And survive what comes after.

"Eskil" He tells the Purrloin. It is not his name, but it doesn't taste like ashes on his tongue like the things she called him earlier, and something in his head calls it appropriate. She accepts it without comment. It will do for now, while he finds himself.

CRUNCH

The "monster of the mountain" was quite a bit smaller than what Eskil had conjured based on the tales spun by the man in the cabin.

It sat in a cave filled with old bones and old blood, a fresh victim gripped in its jaws. The remains had feathers. At least whatever it had been was already dead. Eskil tried not to look any closer as another strong CRUNCH split the air. New blood splattered across the ground as something gave way.

The monster kept chewing.

The annoying crow had remained outside (to keep watch, allegedly). With only Nyx perched in her preferred spot, Eskil debated what to do. The monster either did not notice him or did not care. It was small, but he could not help but replace the feathered corpse in its jaws with a furred one instead (spattered with blood and bits of bone and so cold).

He almost turned around then and there. (Not risking her. Never.)

His foot slid back, pushing aside the remains of a leg bone.

"Leaving so soon?"

The monster didn't sound much like what he imagined one would either.

It had dropped its meal, though it did not look their way.

He could feel Nyx's claws as she shifted on his shoulder.

"I don't get many visitors, you understand."

It stood. The four stubby legs and shaggy black fur adorning its head would be almost comical if not for the smears of blood around its mouth (and if not for its teeth).

"I couldn't imagine why." Nyx oozed confidence (and sarcasm).

The thing before them laughed. A sharp bark that showed more teeth than should fit in a mouth. (The blood coating them didn't help.)

"Everyone has to eat." Wryly (as if everyone left a graveyard of bones in their wake). "But that is besides the point. What brings you here?"

No amount of politeness would lower Eskil's guard. Not with how many dead were discarded at their feet.

Thankfully, Nyx was willing to play along. (Conversation was not his strong suit. Not that he knew what was, but he could at least be certain of that.)

"You have quite a reputation in the woods." Flattery? Well, it probably wouldn't hurt. "Someone (warned) told us stories about the monster of the mountain. Perhaps we just wanted to see if they were true. Especially given that something destroyed a nearby village." (Was this the thing that destroyed the village? Was this the key to his questions?)

"Did they now?" Its head tilted. "And what do those stories entail? Do they say I swoop down in the cover of night and devour their children and livestock? Destroy their homes? I don't do much swooping, I’m afraid. I don’t have wings. I suppose ‘swoop’’ could be metaphorical, but my legs are not designed for speed either. And why would I trek all the way to their little villages to terrorize them when there's food around here? You have the wrong 'monster', I fear."

Not a surprise, really. This monster could not fly, and seemed unlikely to be able to drag entire families away.

For all of the death surrounding it, the beast was, well, small. And it was true that its legs were rather stubby. Even standing at full height, it only came up to Eskil’s waist.

“But really, I’m interested in hearing more about this ‘monster’. It would be nice to learn about my competition.”

Each step the dragon took towards them, Eskil had to fight the instinct to step back. Small size or not, the being before him screamed danger.

“You said it destroyed a town? The one at the base of the mountain? Or perhaps, it destroyed the one hidden in the forest?”

A soft hiss by his ear. His heart skipped a beat. The man in the cabin had claimed that the nearest village was at the base of the mountain, and had professed ignorance at the smoldering ruins Eskil had stumbled out of.

“You know of the village in the forest?” It was said more sharply than he had intended, but this was the first bit of information he had gleaned since he had walked out of that village. He had been starting to feel like it was all a bad dream.

“Of course! It is always good to keep track of the inhabitants of my territory and the surrounding areas. Should I take that to mean that the forest village suffered an attack?”

“More than an attack…” Nyx murmured in his ear.

The Deino’s focus shifted to her at the soft comment. “Oh? What happened?”

“There is nothing left.” She replied, after a moment of heavy silence. “The village burned to ash, and you are looking at what is likely the only survivor.”

Interesting. Did you see this 'monster'?”

“No. He doesn't remember anything before he woke up in the aftermath.”

“Pity.” It was close enough to touch now. “But you’ve piqued my interest. How about I come with you? I promise I won’t Bite.”

The immediate, visceral response was a resounding ‘NO!’, but before Eskil could even open his mouth to speak, Nyx responded.

“For what purpose?” Came the demand.

“Something destroyed that village. Something that apparently no one has actually seen. I don’t intend to sit by while such things happen in my territory.”

She nodded. “I suppose we are all looking for answers. Another body couldn’t hurt.”

Excellent.” The smiling maw was horribly unsettling. Eskil could feel a heavy sense of foreboding. A private talk with Nyx about the choice of travelling companions was high on his to-do list.

“My name is Arawn.” A bowed head and that terrifying smile. “I look forward to working with you.”

A Surprise Start Part 1

(Note: I finally found this, something I wrote way back when I first joined but never posted. I'm not sure how good it is, but I'm not really up to rewriting the whole thing right now, so here's the first part in all it's dubious glory. Second part was written a lot later, and still needs to be edited, but should be up soon.)

______________

Schala's sixteenth birthday started out uneventfully. She spent most of it reading, enjoyed a nice dinner plus cake, and as per tradition, her father dropped by her room that evening with her present. Unlike previous years, however, the present wasn't a stack of new books, but a sturdy looking backpack that definitely looked like it was intended for travel.

She squinted at it through thick glasses as he set it down with a flourish. It even had a sparkly red bow perched on top. Maybe the books were inside? It certainly looked like the backpack contained something.

She switched her gaze from her confusing present to her grinning father standing next to it, and gave him a similar look.

Taking the confused squinting as a cue, he began on what sounded like a heavily practiced speech.

"Happy Birthday! Your mother and I have been thinking lately that you could use some life experience that doesn't come from books. You didn't want to take the year off to go on a journey when you were ten, unlike most of your classmates, and you've shown no interest in doing so after that. While we respect your...dedication to your studies, the kind of experiences you gain from traveling with Pokemon are things that you can't experience by reading about them. Trust me, I think you'll find the entire experience enlightening, and that it will enrich your education!" His spiel lost bluster as he noticed that her expression had changed from confusion to dawning horror, but while it stumbled, he doggedly continued, trying to say his piece before the shock gave way to protests.

"I've already spoken to your teacher. You're are excused for the rest of the school year for 'supplementary travel experience', just like your classmates were. When you return is contingent on your journey, but your mother and I have already decided that you should give this at least a month. If you decide that you wish to return after that time has passed, we'll be happy to have you back. You're leaving tomorrow, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Your present already has most of the things you need, but you'll probably want to pack some extra clothes and anything else you want to bring."

"But-" Schala finally managed to find her voice to interrupt, but her father talked over her.

"It has already been decided. We'll give you your Pokemon companion tomorrow before you leave." He continued sternly.

"Well, I'll leave you to pack and get some rest." His expression softened, as did his words. "Goodnight...and happy birthday." He turned and exited the room, closing the door carefully behind him.

Schala watched him go, and then stared at the door blankly. Her parents had always seemed supportive of her desire to forgo the 'traditional' journey so she could focus on her studies. What had changed? Why? Maybe she'd wake up tomorrow with a stack of new books and realize it had all been a dream? Schala hoped so.

It took some time before she could force herself to move and inspect the backpack. It was sturdy, and almost charcoal gray with thick straps and several pockets. She removed the bow with some trepidation, detached what appeared to be a sleeping bag attached to the side, and a waterproof tent from the other, and then slowly opened the biggest pocket. There was indeed something already contained in it, but it wasn't books.

She removed the various items from the bag, and was left with a pile that was a mixture of camping, hiking, and beginner trainer items. She had found a pair of hiking boots, some rope, a jacket, and some camping utensils along with some Potions, a bit of cash, and a handful of empty Pokeballs. Perhaps the most interesting item was a black box, that contained a pair of Blackglasses, a special Pokeball that she couldn't immediately identify, what appeared to be a Pokedex (though she had never seen one in person, let alone this specific model), and a single book. A Beginner's Guide to Pokemon Journeys was printed on the front in bright letters. Leaving everything else aside, she opened it. Whatever her dad said, books were her best source of information. Packing could wait.

_____________________________________

The book had certainly contained information, but not the kind she usually sought out. It was much more interesting to learn about how evolution changed molecular structures than the proper use of various medicines. Though, the section on berries had been interesting. It would have been more interesting if it had gone into depth about why certain berries were used for various ailments rather than just listing which ones were, however.

She had put off packing for a while now. But it was starting to sink in that this was unlikely to be a prank by her parents. If she didn't pack, they might just throw her out anyway. Begrudgingly, she tossed some extra clothes into the pile of things from the backpack, as well as a few...well, more than a few, books. Then she shoved everything haphazardly into the backpack. It was a struggle to get it closed, but she managed. Triumphant, she finally attached the sleeping bag and tent to the outside. They didn't fit on as cleanly as they had before, and the pack looked like it was ready to burst at the seams, but she had finished.

She went to bed. She didn't feel up to reading, so she lay there in the dark, anxious, until she finally fell into an uneasy sleep.

The morning dawned bright and cheerful. She hated it. Her mother called her down for breakfast and asked cheerfully if she had finished packing. It was an awkward affair, given how upset Schala was. She hadn't slept well either. After she had finished her pancakes and 'answered' her mother's questions with annoyed grunts, her mother had instructed her to get dressed in her new boots and some 'comfortable walking clothes' and meet her father outside.

Schala spent an extra ten minutes digging the boots out of her backpack and then shoving everything back inside. Successfully dressed, she grudgingly headed downstairs to meet her father. Her mother stopped her by the door, hugged her, reminded her to be careful, and told her she would definitely enjoy herself. Schala barely managed to bite back a retort, and headed out the front door.
