I think it may have been reaction to Sadiq Khan at the time leading (and since winning) the London Mayoral election.

Nah fuck Sadiq (although I did give him my second preference). Everyone I have worked for professionally won so. Wooo.

The results across the country can best be described as a mediocre day for everyone.

Interesting day in NI though, but it's kind of like that Simpsons Treehouse of Horror sketch in my view.

"The DUP and SF lost some seats."

"That's good!"

"However, this has led to Stormont having the most unionist-dominated government in recent memory."

"That's bad."

"But it was a good day for progressive parties, with Claire Bailey, Eamonn McCann and Gerry Carroll (especially him, DAMN) causing surprise upsets!"

"That's good!" etc.

But yeah, some real surprises from these results. Gerry Carroll, leader of People Before Profit Alliance is yesterday's success story, meeting the quota in West Belfast by over 3000 first preferences in such a safe Sinn Fein seat. I suspect SF will try to spin it as a victory for them by claiming to be "basically socialist", but that's a huge one for Carroll. McCann finally getting in after running for 50 years is also a hell of an achievement and a bit of a Cinderella story, much like Bailey, deputy leader of the Greens, who more than tripled her vote from last cycle.

My Lagan Valley prediction was way off btw - DUP lost a seat (but returned Edwin "eww gay blood" Poots and Paul "Earth is 4000 years old" Givan"), both UUP candidates were elected and the Alliance guy, who was my third preference.

SDLP Deputy Leader lost his seat, which is a pretty big surprise as well, but no loss.

Jim "homosexuality is an abomination" Wells was also returned, god DAMN it South Down what the fuck

So all I know right now is that the mayor of London is a Muslim who was a human rights lawyer and supported gay marriage despite death threats.

Is England now more, less, or approximately the same socialist?

Condolences to her family. Sorry to hear that a mite of gun violence has sprung up in the Isles this week too, Brits. Thankfully it seems that few were injured.

Oh that's so sad. All she wanted to do was have a nice meeting with her constituents, then this happened. And her birthday was next week too... I can only imagine how her family feels right now, it must be horrible.

41 years old. Husband and two kids.

Lifelong human rights campaigner and wonderful person.

Rest in peace Jo.

The possible links to far-right terrorism here are utterly terrifying frankly.

I saw this as well. Such an unfortunate action.

Apparently the gun was handmade, and the man yelled "Britain first!" before shooting. Kind of creepy that someone would want to assassinate a politician so badly over the vote on whether or not to break from the EU (?? presumably. Jo was British, from Britain, and shooting Brits does not strike me as something that is remarkably effective at advancing British interests). That seems like easily the least important thing to assassinate a politician over, too.

Sufficed to say that reading too much in to the politics of this is unwise. The guy evidently had some past mental health issues, which of course are no excuse but do somewhat diminish the ability of people to needlessly spin it (not that this disparages anyone else with mental health issues). This isn't the States.

He gave his name to a court as "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain" and there is photographic evidence of him campaigning with Britain First, who held a "knife training" workshop recently.

EDIT: I really disliked my tone here and apologise for that. I do think denying any links to far-right terror is pretty naive especially at this stage but I was just straight-up rude here and I'm sorry.

Your point was valid; even though I totally disagree with the modern trend of discarding facts that don't fit the narrative, in this case it's okay to make the case that he was seriously mentally ill.

*has a history of mental health issues.

I edited my previous post yesterday to be clear on this point. Plus mental health is not a brush to tar people with, just as it is not an excuse.

His mental health condition was obsessive compulsive disorder, according to the Mirror. So that particular connection is questionable at best.

Sooo while I have had a long, distinguished interest in Britain, I haven't really kept up with it lately.

But I have been browsing the British ADRs and noticed that for whatever reason, most of Britain's company stocks save Royal Dutch Shell are in the tanker.

What's the political situation that's driving this market bear? I see "weak pound" but that can't be all of it, can it?

Is the EU referendum reportedly causing issues too?

Well yeah it's primarily the referendum. There have also been crises in swctors such as steel which have exacerbated matters.

How does the referendum affect the economy? I don't quite understand the cause and effect chain here.

The EU is our largest trading partner, and as part of our we can negotiate much better trade deals with the rest of the world (because the EU as a whole obviously has more to offer than Britain alone). Leaving it would throw up trade barriers in a way British business doesn't currently face and subsequently fuck our economy for some time. Like not irreparably forever, but we're likely to hit a prolonged recession if we leave.

Economies work based on projections. Fear in the stock markets can cause massive fluctuations and entire economies to shit the bed, which is what has happened in the past.

The indecision surrounding the referendum means that people aren't sure what's going to happen - major consensus is that if Britain leaves, it won't do so well, so the pound will be a lot weaker against the Euro. Alternatively, if it stays, then there won't be any problem and the pound may well strengthen. But until we get the results... we just won't know.

Economics isn't really an exact science.

This is probably all wrong and Kush will correct everything I say.

If Britain does go into a recession, even if it's an isolation-induced one, there will be world-wide effects relating to that. The US is juggling with being on the verge of one itself (which I'm actually cheering for) and powder-kegs elsewhere on Earth can ignite it.

Vote carefully.
