Grovyle Intermediate Trainer Battle: Pest vs jolteonjak [FINISHED]

It was time to try something slightly different. He'd seen plenty of regular matches, pitting two opponents who were most comfortable on the ground. But he lacked experience as far as aerial or aquatic fights were concerned, and it was in his best interest to watch and referee some of those. Otherwise, he'd be ill-prepared when the time came to fulfill his destiny in the League. The Silver Lake might just provide him the kind of battle he needed to study...

One of the battlers he'd already met before: Tempest Milano, the one who'd destroyed half the abandoned fairground and laid waste to a Togepi with her Steelix in the process. Her opponent, Chad McBrennan, was someone who Levin had never seen in action, but one who'd played a big role in kickstarting Levin's career (likely unbeknownst to him) when he traded him a small Bagon back in the day... who'd grown into the powerful Syre the Salamence.

- Pest, Chad, thank you for coming. Hope you don't mind the setting; I want to see how you fair in this kind of environment for a change. May the best Trainer win, and may the three of us have a great time in the process!

Bio: After assisting a trainer named Levin in his quest to prove himself to his brother, Fons (then Kamui) was taken aside by Levin and told that he would not be able to learn anything else under his care. Between the choices of being released and being transferred to a new team, the Golduck chose the latter, and it was with a heavy heart that he parted from his trainer as well as his friend, Mazo the Lucario. Although Pest's Pokémon show promise, he will never forget the training he has gone through before, and he hopes that one day he will be able to see his old friends again.
Fons, as far as his new teammates can tell, has never spoken a word. As such, it is often difficult to determine what he is thinking. From a cryptic remark from Uxie, however, they have learned that he desires to increase his knowledge and abilities, as both were hindered when he was a Psyduck. As he is stronger than all but two of Pest's Pokémon, they respect his ways and don't force him to interact with them beyond what he feels inclined to do. Since his introduction to the team, he has formed a rapport with Vesta, who sympathizes with his uncertainty as to where his life will take him now. She hopes that she can help him on his new path in any way she can, and Fons, though stoic, is grateful for her offer of assistance.

Silver Lake ... Pest smiled as she surfed on her Pokemon toward one of the small center islands, admiring the sheen that gave the body of water its name. The Twilight Realm wasn't easy to access at the best of times, so she counted herself quite lucky that she was able to travel here for this battle. The water stretched as far as the eye could see, and the light faintly sparkled across its surface, almost unearthly in its airiness. She could only stay a short while, but she'd enjoy it while it lasted.

Meeting up with the other two trainers, she waved in greeting. "Nice to meet you, Chad! I've never been in a battle with such strong Pokemon before, so this should be really interesting. Good luck!" She turned to the referee with a knowing grin. "And thanks for helping out, Levin! I think you'll find Fons here familiar." She didn't seem to notice the Golduck's eyes widen ever so slightly at the sight of his former trainer. He composed himself quickly, however, and poised himself at the edge of the island, awaiting his orders.

Pest took in a breath. "Okay, Fons. Start out with a Yawn, then take a moment to Calm your Mind. Finally, shoot off a Signal Beam!"

Chad had gotten an invite from a fellow trainer, Tempest “Pest” Milano. He hadn’t met her just yet, but he heard talk of how great of a trainer she was. He usually doesn’t turn down a request, so he replied to her. Now he’s making his way to the battlefield.

He stopped when he reached a lake. He looked around confused, a little, because he was sure he followed the directions clearly. ‘Is this the place?’ Chad thought to himself. ‘I am here for a battle and not swim lessons, right?’ He walked up to a pair of trainers; one of them was familiar to him. That was Levin, a trainer he once traded a hatchling of his to. “Levin, how’s it going?” A very brief chat took place between Chad and Levin, and Chad learned that he was the referee. Next to him was a woman. “You must be Tempest,” he reached out to shake her hand. The three of them chatted some more, until they were prepared to battle.

“On the water, huh?” Chad said to himself as he crossed the bridge. He took his place on one of the islands next to the bridge. He surveyed the area. This was no place for his first choice, even if he was a turtle or tortoise. He thought about this for a moment.

“I know I have quite a few Bugs that could take this battle, two especially, I think I’ll use you instead,” he commented as he pulled a Pokeball out of his pocket and tossed it. “Poliwhirl, it’s your time!” Out of the Pokeball appeared a blue and white Pokémon with a large swirl on his chest. On his arm, he wore a band of some sort. It looked very similar to a crown. He wore his King’s Rock with pride, as one day he knows he will become Politoed the Poli-King. He looked as though he knew he was going in the water, because he immediately assumed a diving position.

“I don’t know what kind of opponent we’ll be facing, Poliwhirl,” Chad deduced, “so let’s play defense. Start off by boosting your defense with Defense Curl. Next try to dodge any attack that comes your way, and if our opponent gets close to you, use Hypnosis to stop whatever they have planned. Good luck out there buddy.”

OOC: Using my Poliwhirl, holding his King’s Rock (stats in the spoiler). And with this battle, it looks like I'll be officially locking in "Water Absorb" as Poliwhirl's ability.

ROUND 1

This was going to be unlike any battle he'd ever reffed - after all, every bout so far had been on dry land. A water arena demanded a different approach, different tactical thinking and no small amount of adaptability, both for the Trainers involved, their Pokemon and Levin himself. Hovering atop Zion the Metagross, he tapped the Steel-Type on the head, mentally asking it to keep track of everything.

If I want to reach that one level someday, I can't miss a beat here.

Pest sent out her Pokemon first, and Levin's eyes widened at her choice. He'd never forgotten him and their time together - Kamui, now Fons, the prodigious Golduck - and, subtle as the Pokemon was, it was clear that neither did he. They'd parted on amicable terms; back then Levin believed himsef unfitting to raise Kamui properly, given his calling for Fighting-Types. If he'd known where life would take him ,and that he'd abandon that pursuit in favor of Championship gold, he'd never have allowed Kamui to leave. But it seemed it was for the best after all - Fons, as he was now known, looked better than ever under Tempest's ownership, and Levin had already witnessed the extent of Pest's talent in an earlier battle.

You're in good hands, dear friend...

Chad, a veteran in his own right, and Bug-Type specialist, chose to step out of his comfort zone and change up his style for this match, as required by the field and expected of an expert Trainer. His choice was a Poliwhirl proudly holding a King's Rock, and althouh levin had never talked to Chad about him, he knew the Water-Type had been waiting to reach his final stage for a very, very long time. It remained to be seen how he'd fare against the exceptional mental power of Fons, that Levin was amply familiar with.

Let's see what cards you got up your sleeve, Chad.

- Let's get to it then!

---

With the ever-so-slight speed advantage, Poliwhirl moves first and opts to act defensively, curling up in a ball and tensing its muscles to prepare for any oncoming physical strikes... but none come his way. Instead, Fons lets out a strangely contagious Yawn that reaches Poliwhirl's ears and leaves him slightly groggy... but all parties involved know it's only a matter of time before the attack's full effect kicks in. Fons brings his hands to his forehead and focuses his immense mental power with ease, heightening his migraine-free senses to a new level.
But when he opens his eyes again and prepares to let loose his Signal Beam, Poliwhirl is ready for him with his spiraling belly pattern, using his own sleep-inducing technique to counterattack!

Fons's concentration is broken and he fails to channel the necessary energy to release his beam, but thanks to his Calm Mind, the full power of Hypnosis is partially buffered... however, if Fons keeps staring at Poliwhirl, his mind will cave in eventually!

The round ends with no damage done and two very, very sleepy Pokemon about to give in to slumber at the same time...

Pest winced, then laughed at the sight of the two sleepy Pokemon. Clearly she and Chad were on the same page here. "It's okay, Fons!" she called, and she met his sleepily skeptical look with a smile. "Just look away from his spiral thingy - close your eyes if you have to, and throw in another Calm Mind to help shake of the tiredness. Then, if you're still awake, use Confusion to muddle him up while he's asleep. Simple enough to work, right?"

Chad observed as the battle began, and it appeared to him that strategy was going to be a key factor in this battle with most other aspects being similar. Both trainers used Water types, although the field practically begged for it. Both trainers opened with sleep-inducing moves. It seemed to be a common strategy.

It was only a matter of time before Poliwhirl would succumb to the effects of Yawn, so Chad thought he would make the best of a difficult situation. Plus he had heard Pest ordering another Calm Mind. This would give him some time. “Poliwhirl, stay calm. We can work around this. Here’s what I’d like you to do. Charge towards Fons, and when the Calm Mind begins I want you to use Body Slam. If you’re still awake afterwards, concentrate on using Hypnosis when Fons opens his eyes.

ROUND 2

Great minds think alike, and in a rather amusing scenario, both Pokemon are seconds away from falling asleep thanks to their opponent's respective strategy.
Realizing the importance of avoiding eye-contact, and having seen for herself the useful side effect of Calm Mind in increasing mental resistance, Pest has Fons repeat the approach - a second Calm Mind will no doubt clear his head and give him an edge!

However, Chad is ready, and looks to capitalize on Pest's own instructions - having Fons close his eyes to avoid Hypnosis gives Poliwhirl all the time in the world to charge the kappa and drop the entirety of his body weight on him, falling on top of Fons with a thud and thoroughly breaking the Water-Type's concentration! Fons struggles to free himself, wondering if any of this would have happened if only he'd gotten in the water already, and as he goes to tap into his foe's mind with a Confusion, he quickly understands how futile it is trying to confuse... a sleeping Pokemon!

Indeed, it seems Fons must be a comfortable pillow, because a mere second after crashing on top of him, Poliwhirl falls asleep! Try as may, there is no way to induce a proper migraine on a creature resting so profoundly (even if the tadpole winces like he's having an agitated dream), so it falls on Golduck to find another way out of his predicament - even if his muscles don't seem numbed by the sudden body weight dropped on them, leaving behind no lasting paralysis, fact remains that he still has to move the slumbering Poliwhirl off of him somehow!
And what about Chad, whose ally is now seemingly out for the count? Can he turn things around or will Poliwhirl be smacked about helplessly when Fons breaks free?

As the round came to a close, Levin looked around, inspecting the tricky arena. This wasn't a regular clay surface like that of League battles - no, much like the Palace courtyard, it had its intricacies just waiting to be explored. If Chad and Pest could use them to their advantage, like Hyrem and Cyrus had one day done in an impressive display of strategic thinking over at the royal courtyard, maybe they could add yet another layer to this so-far pretty even clash. Then again, they had simply been sizing each other up so far, and something told him the real battle was only now beginning. He couldn't wait to see what both of them had in store!

Chad was a little shocked that the Body Slam was so successful, granted no paralysis. The shock wore off quickly; however, as Poliwhirl fell asleep. Even better, for Chad anyway, Poliwhirl was sleeping on Fons! Chad decided to let sleeping tadpoles lie, so to speak.

“Poliwhirl, you’re doing great bud! Just relax and sleep on Fons as long as you need to,” Chad wondered if Poliwhirl could even hear him. “If he manages to throw you off use Sleep Talk.

Pest bit her lip at the force of the Body Slam; she could hear it pretty clearly even from this distance. Fons struggled to remove the sleeping Poliwhirl from his person, but the tadpole Pokemon was definitely not budging. He was trapped, but Poliwhirl was asleep ... they would have to do what they could, then, even if most of Fons's attacks would be useless against Poliwhirl. They would have to use less familiar attacks if they wanted to reclaim the edge.

"It's okay, Fons!" she called, hoping she wasn't lying. "Use all your Strength to push him off you; slam him into the ground if you can. Then, when you're back on your feet, use Psychic power to throw him as far into the island as possible. Preferably into some rocks." She looked around at the islands and lakes; there were certainly some interesting possibilities in the arena, but she wasn't sure how useful the natural resources would be without water as an option. Right now, she would just have to focus on seizing opportunity wherever it cropped up.

ROUND 3

After an awkward turn of events, Poliwhirl sleeps comfortably on top of a very upset-looking Fons. The tadpole isn’t exactly a lightweight, making it hard to breathe, and Pest sympathizes with her Golduck’s predicament – getting Poliwhirl off of him is the number one priority!
Tensing his muscles – something he isn’t required to do very often, nor does he enjoy having to -, Fons summons all of his physical Strength, lifts Poliwhirl’s dead weight off and slams him down against the floor right next to him, breathing a sigh of relief afterwards. The impact isn’t strong enough to wake the tadpole up though, so Chad knows he has to step in before more harm comes to his friend.
Fortunately, he taught Poliwhirl a very useful move just for this kind of situations, and the strong bond with his Pokemon allows his orders to reach through to the slumbering Pokemon – Sleep Talk is Chad’s best bet, even if it is completely random in nature…

Suddenly, Poliwhirl gets up, eyes still closed, in a sleepwalking state. He clumsily brings his hands together, starts glowing faintly…. And immediately wakes up! It seems that, in his slumber, the move his mind conjured was none other than Refresh, dramatically shortening the length of his forced nap!

Determined not to lose the upper hand, Fons brings his claws to the gem on his forehead and resorts to what he does best – unleashing the full brunt of his immense Psychic power on the recently-risen foe! A sudden wave of telekinetic energy blasts Poliwhirl away, lifts him in the air helplessly and drives his restrained body forcefully against the ground of the small island on the far end of the lake, creating a huge gap between the two opponents to end the round!

Poliwhirl struggles back to his feet, now perfectly awake but hurting all over. Can he stand up to Fons and his scary mental power? Does Chad have any more tricks up his sleeve to keep this match going?

Nodding to herself, Pest considered their position. It was unfortunate that the sleeping Poliwhirl had called Refresh, but Fons's hefty psychic power had more than evened the odds. Still, they would have to watch their move. Chad and Poliwhirl were tricky opponents, so they would have to take care.

"Fons, it looks like we can't get him from this distance. But that works both ways, so use Calm Mind while he's too far away to hit you. If he comes in significantly close, hit him with your Psychic waves!"

“I wasn’t expecting that to happen!” Chad was taken aback by Poliwhirl’s premature awakening. It seemed everyone else was too. “Calm Mind again?” he commented a little vexed. “Now there’s no sense in using Ice Beam or anything like that.”

Chad watched as the water crashed on some of the islands. “Poliwhirl, jump in the water and swim close to Fons. Knock him around with a couple Power-Up Punches. If you can do that by getting behind Fons, that's even better!"

OOC: If jumping in the water and swimming count as separate moves, cut down to one Power-Up Punch.

ROUND 4

((JJ: Going in the water is the start of your movement, much like ordering a Flying-Type to take flight - I don't count that as an action by itself since it's just your choice of route ;) ))

Fons seems to have the upper hand now that he pulled out his greatest weapon – the power of his mind. Poliwhirl now has to contend with a dangerous psychic, whose mental prowess has already been increased through Calm Mind… But Chad seems to be on to something with his new set of instructions!

Poliwhirl nods with determination and leaps into the water, vanishing from sight. Levin smiles – this is what he’s been hoping for. The arena has plenty of space for strategic thinking, so fighting on the islands only is a restrictive approach.

But is Chad’s change in tactics enough to dodge Kamui’s onslaught? I know what that Golduck can do from experience…

With the foe at a safe distance, Fons takes the opportunity to further heighten his concentration, erasing all unnecessary thoughts and memories (such as that of being crushed under a giant sleeping tadpole). As a result, both his mind’s power and resistance increase even more… but what good will it do now? It dawns on Fons and Pest that, while the Poliwhirl remains out of their sight, there is no way the Golduck can strike! The kappa closes his eyes, attempting to sense his foe’s position, but Poliwhirl remains submerged and untraceable – without knowing where to look, Fons can’t invade his opponent’s mind!

Suddenly, with a splash, Chad’s partner leaps out of the lake from behind Golduck and drives a charged fist into his back, following up with a second one on the staggered opponent!

I seem to remember Chad once mentioning how much he liked this move... I can see why.

With each hit Poliwhirl feels his muscles bulkier and eager to keep punching… but Fons has other plans! As Pest’s partner brings his claws to the red gem on his forehead again, Chad winces in anticipation of what he knows is about to happen: with a Psychic wave so strong that the water around them rises and splashes everywhere, Fons blasts Poliwhirl away again and the tadpole is once more propelled to the edge of the arena, this time landing inside the lake away from any isles. He soon reemerges, dazed by the hit but still raring to go, while Fons throws the valiant Poliwhirl a defiant glare…

Chad was hoping to use the water to his advantage, and it worked, sort of. After being blasted into the water again, though, Chad decided to try something. “Poliwhirl, you’re doing great bud!” he called out. “I want you to swim around underwater to confuse Fons. Then, when you’ve changed your location enough shoot an Ice Ball. As soon as you’ve fired it, back in the water. Swim around again, and fire another Ice Ball.”

Not for the first time, and probably not for the last time either, Pest regretted not teaching Fons Telekinesis. After all, it was right up his alley, and she thought he'd get a kick out of getting to use more precise telekinetic control. But there was no changing that right now, and they needed to use what they already had if they were going to get further in this fight.

"If he wants to play ball," she told Fons, "we'll just have to meet him on the court. Or something. Go underwater so that you can see him and he can see you - follow him if you have to - and then, while he's trying to aim, use Flash. After that, take him up in your Psychic grip and slam him down against the lake floor."

ROUND 5

While Chad looks to capitalize on the arena once again, encouraged by the success of the previous attempt, Pest sees through his strategy and has Fons do the exact same thing. That way, and both creatures being proficient inside water, it becomes exceedingly hard for Poliwhirl to pass by undetected.

Both Pokemon dive at the same time, and when Poliwhirl tries to approach his target unnoticed, he finds Fons swimming straight at him – rendering the stealth option invalid. With that, the tadpole shoots an Ice Ball at his target; with the projectile’s movement hampered by the water’s increased density, it strikes the Golduck with reduced forced but still hits hard enough to be felt. Determined to keep going, Poliwhirl readies a larger Ice Ball, but as he takes aim, an intense flash of light covers his field of vision, dazing him and severely reducing his eyesight! Struggling not to miss, Poliwhirl hurls the second chunk of ice at Fons… and although it takes tremendous effort, the sphere hits its target a second time!

Relaying the action from within the lake to Levin, who can’t see underwater (while Zion seems decidedly uninterested in doing so), is Loffley. The Frillish communicates mentally with his Trainer in his usual formal, perfectly educated manner, while failing to conceal a hint of excitement at all the violence being put on display. The Ghost-Type keeps his distance but has his eyes locked on the two combatants the entire time.

Frustrated by the repeated hits, mildly effective as they were due to his protective Water typing, Fons resorts to his go-to move once more, trapping Poliwhirl with his Psychic hold and tossing him down against the lake floor. However, much like the Ice Ball, the Golduck realizes that moving an enemy around inside water is much different from maneuvering them in the air – such is the resistance offered by the liquid environment that the blow is severely softened, and while the tadpole definitely feels the hit when he comes into contact with the sandy ground, it’s nowhere near as bad as it could have been had they been outside.

With both fighters feeling the effects of the prolonged battle, it seems the clash might be nearing its end. Who will seize the opportunity and claim victory?

Pest could get a glimpse of the underwater battle every few seconds - she and Fons hadn't often practiced sharing a telepathic link. It probably wasn't her thing, really, what with the weird sensation of seeing a distant sight with eyes she didn't have. Still, she couldn't deny it was useful. Even though she could dimly see the blue shapes of the battlers under the water, it was better to get a more immediate perspective.

"We're getting closer to the end," she said aloud, letting her mouth shape the thoughts that might otherwise be nebulous across their link. "Slamming him down on the floor, maybe even on the rocks, with two more Psychic assaults would be great. I know he's getting really dangerous with that Ice Ball, but we can't afford to be cautious at this point. Give it your all!"

Chad thought that perhaps that last round could have gone better if he had given different orders. Perhaps, an order like that was better served to come out of blue for the surprise factor. ‘Looks like we could be in trouble,’ Chad thought to himself. ‘We may not have another chance, so let’s make it count.’

Chad looked around for some kind of communication device for under the water. He looked at Levin for a hint. When nothing was to be gained from the judge, Chad decided to hope for the best. “Poliwhirl, you’re doing fantastic!” he called out. “Time to get out of the water! I want you to use Waterfall! Aim for Fons; but the point is to get out of the water!” It was one of those instances where you say something without thinking, because now Chad had to think of a way to attack. None of his physical attacks would be as effective in the water. Ice Ball would be softened by the water. Water attacks wouldn’t work either. Then, an idea. “Fight Psychic with Psychic! Use Psywave; regardless of whether or not you get out of the water!”

ROUND 6

Both opponents deep underwater, it becomes exceedingly hard for their respective Trainers to issue commands to partners they can't see. However, Pest's last order was for Fons to slam Poliwhirl down against the lake floor, so Chad has a pretty good idea how things might look like down there and intends to use that assumption to his advantage.

Meanwhile, Fons finds himself having trouble focusing any harder. Despite his mental prowess, he isn't a natural Psychic-Type, and has been using mind techniques every single round, to the point where he starts to feel slightly lightheaded. Psychic assaults take a lot of concentration to use effectively, let alone maneuvering an opponent around inside water. Consecutive use of the move by anything other than a native Psychic takes a massive toll, even for someone as tuned to the mental forces as Fons.
The Golduck takes longer to focus now than he did before, and Poliwhirl capitalizes: taking advantage of his battlefield positioning, he summons a huge pillar of water to rise and carry him all the way to the surface, dragging the charging Fons along with him; the water pressure hurts the Golduck and sends him flying out of the water, causing him to land back first on one of the isles; meanwhile Poliwhirl remains airborne, being propelled even higher by his own move, and has the downed Golduck firmly in his sights. He concentrates and releases 3 rings of luminescent energy flying towards Fons, which find their mark and explode on contact!

Hurt but not out, Fons struggles back to his feet while Poliwhirl lands in one of the isles on the opposite side. Still dizzy but focused enough thanks to his previous Calm Minds, the Golduck feels his mental powers dropping significantly, with barely any reserves left, but goes for another Psychic blast as instructed. Poliwhirl is trapped in the familiar blue aura, lifted off the ground and tossed back down hard; finally, practically drained, the kappa forces the tadpole into the air again, though at noticeably lower height than before, and drives the Poliwhirl's body against the isle's floor again. Such was the energy expended that Fons drops to his knees, gasping for air; he knows it'll be a while before he can tap into his ultimate weapon again...

However, he might not need to. Despite the significant drop in power and depleted Psychic energy reserves, the beating Fons laid on Poliwhirl might have been enough - both Chad and Pest look at the valiant tadpole, holding their breaths, while the Water-Type raises one arm, then another, and pulls himself back to his feet somehow! He takes a step forward, eager to continue the fight... but his legs give out, his eyes close and he falls limp on the island floor once again, unmoving. Poliwhirl is unconscious!

Levin smiles and mentally asks Zion if he recorded it all, to which the Metagross replies affirmatively. This was a great match, and one that forced both Trainers to switch up their tactics. If the grand plan he has in mind is to come to fruition, they will all need to be competent outside of their comfort zones, and Pest and Chad both proved they have what it takes. In the end, Fons and his mental prowess allowed him to attack safely from a distance the entire battle - a straightforward if not innovarive straegy, but it got the job done for Tempest, who was now 2-0 in her personal Trainer Battle record. One to keep an eye on, Levin thought to himself.
But Chad was equally praiseworthy - he hung impressively well around a foe with arguably better moveset; it's not everyone who can go toe-to-toe with a proficient Psychic opponent, and Poliwhirl held his own more than admirably with his relatively short movepool. There was no shame to be had about this loss, and Levin for one didn't find a single error in Chad's approach to the match. Unfortunately, his Pokemon was just outclassed in this particular instance. Though it can be argued that, unlike Fons, Poliwhirl still hasn't reached his full potential - and it'll be very interesting to see what the amphibian can do once he reaches that final stage.

- Fantastic battle guys. You should all be proud of yourselves.

Unknowingly, he said it all looking at his once-beloved Kamui; he missed the Golduck by his side, but Pest proved that she is more than deserving of raising one of the strongest partners he'd ever owned. And having proven such worth, he could now do what he'd been hoping to do ever since Tempest arrived on the battlefield. Holding the Pokeball containing Syre, his Salamence, he approached the girl, more determined than ever.

- Hey Pest, I need to talk to you...

Like I said, a great match guys. It wasn't a straightforward arena, and jolteonjak tried to make the most of it. I think it was a solid use of the liquid field (hah :P), and that's what I like to see when I choose these more complex arenas. Admittedly Golduck has an amazing movepool that Poliwhirl falls short of matching, in my personal opinion, and you made the most of what you had which was great to see.
Pest, you had the tools and weren't afraid to use them; they got you the victory so there's no arguing you know what you're doing, but truth be told your orders were almost always based around the same approach - Psychic his ass around :P I'd like to see some more order variety from you in future matches, if only for the creative aspect of things. Still, Trainer Battles are about winning and you seem to be pretty good at doing just that! ^^
Hope you guys had fun!

"Oh ... that's right." Pest cringed as Fons struggled to summon his psychic energy. "Golduck's not a psychic-type. Um ..." She tried to tell herself it was fine, that there wasn't much his water attacks could do against Poliwhirl; nevertheless, she knew she was lying to herself, that Fons was certainly capable of using techniques she hadn't seen from him before. Her Pokedex would know, of course, but she'd been too proud to give it more than a glance. And now, she was paying the price.

Or maybe not. As she watched anxiously, a very bruised Poliwhirl dragged himself back up on his feet, looking for a window of opportunity. Then he collapsed, unable to hold himself upright. She held her breath, wondering if she was seeing this right, and bit her lip as Levin asked his Metagross if he had gotten this recorded. Did that mean ...?

"Fantastic battle, you guys." Levin's voice seized her attention. "You should all be proud of yourselves."

It did mean! She clapped for Fons as he tiredly pulled himself up to her level, his limbs trembling a little. His eyes were weary, but they shone with a glint of understated pride. And why wouldn't they? He'd won the battle, fair and square. But Pest, though proud of him, knew she needed to apologize.

"I'm sorry, Fons." She cracked a small smile at his confusion. "I know we won, but ... I pushed you too hard. With you unable to use water attacks against Poliwhirl, I decided to capitalize on your mental abilities instead. But I was so focused on those that it didn't occur to me to at least break up those Psychic attacks with some other technique. And I know they exhausted you."

Slowly, Fons nodded. He reached out with a webbed hand, dripping wet, and placed it on her shoulder. They stared at each other, silently wrestling with the achievement of their win and the close call of their near-loss. Finally, he turned away and gazed toward Levin, who was looking at him with no small measure of pride.

Pest turned to Chad, reaching to shake his hand. "That was a really close one! You were really smart to use a Pokemon with Water Absorb. And the creativity of Poliwhirl's attacks ... Looking back at it, I wouldn't have been surprised if you'd won after all. Good match!"

Footsteps signaled Levin's approach. She turned, anticipating a remark on her sloppy strategy, only to pause when she noticed the Pokeball in his hand. It wasn't the black-and-electric-green ball that housed his Metagross; rather, it was a simple, ordinary Pokeball. Despite its unassuming appearance, though, Pest had a feeling there was more to the matter, a feeling that was compounded by the determination in his face.

He spoke. "Hey Pest, I need to talk to you ..."

To her? "Fire away," she said. "What do you want to talk about?" She exchanged a glance with Fons, wondering what this was all about ...

Good game, jj! And thanks for reffing, MZ! Yeah, I wasn't exactly creative in this battle. I'd say it's mostly because water-type moves would be useless in the match, but that's no excuse for not looking more deeply into the arena. I will really have to think of more organic strategies than "spam Psychic" :P

Raising Fons from Lv.37 to Lv.39.

Hope you guys had fun!

Chad stood there watching a deceivingly empty battle field, and all of a sudden, the water exploded with Fons being thrown out thanks to the Waterfall attack from Poliwhirl. He, too, was soon to follow. He wasted no time in firing off some rings of Psywave at the Duck Pokemon. Everything seemed to be turning to his favor finally.

All of a sudden, Fons was back on his feet using Psychic once again, slamming Poliwhirl to another island. Poliwhirl managed to get back on his feet too. “Great job buddy!” Chad cheered for his Pokemon. “You’re doing great. Now all we have to is…”

It was at that point that Poliwhirl succumbed to his injuries and fainted. “Oh no! Poliwhirl!” Chad yelled out. He ran over to Poliwhirl . “You did great! I’m so proud of you.” He gave Poliwhirl a quick hug.

“Fantastic battle guys. You should all be proud of yourselves,” Chad heard Levin announce. He was certainly proud of Poliwhirl’s performance. He noticed Pest was also consoling Fons.

“You were great Pest,” Chad called over to Pest. “Congratulations.” Chad took Poliwhirl’s Pokeball out. “Let’s get you back home, so you can rest up. Return, Poliwhirl,” he said aiming the Pokeball at Poliwhirl recalling it to its Pokeball.

OOC: Thank you for reffing MZ. Pest, you were awesome. Congratulations on a hard-fought battle. Claiming 1 XP for Poliwhirl.
