You asked, nay, ordered your companion to use his projection skills. You were going to sneak past the grim hands one way or another. You stressed that this was non-negotiable. “Okay? Let's go," you barked at him and moved. The Hex maniac was taken aback by your overbearing disposition to him. He hesitantly followed you as you moved from wall to wall to get nearer. When he finally got close enough for you to hear him whisper, he stuttered his words, clearly still speechless by you snapping at him. He tried his best to object to your plan, and explaining why it wouldn’t work.

“I-I-I..I..do-don’t, I mean ca-ca-can’t. I mean I can.. I can pro-oject my spirit into this realm. I ca-can’t just make ill-ill-ill-ill-illusions app-pe-pe-pear.”

Your plan was clearly not going to work like this. After all, you had to figure out a way to get past, instead of relying on your deus-Hex (Maniac)-machina.

“H-ho-however,” the Hex Maniac proposed an alternative. His voice was getting better. “I have a, a Pokémon who knows Hypnosis and can create illusions. But I’m not sure those things have eyes. A-and I have a Pokémon with Telekinesis, i-if you wa-wa-“ his eyes grew and lifted themselves above your head. You had no idea what he was looking at but you had a nagging feeling. You turn and saw one of the giant hands looming above you. It was reaching out to grab you. You had to do something quick.
You had rushed into the centre with a faulty plan, not even checking with your partner if he could do what you wanted from him. And now you were about to pay the price for it unless you did something quickly.

What do you do?
To clarify: There are actual repercussions in place for you and your character if you get caught by the hands. I won’t say what because it’ll ruin parts of the story. So please try to avoid them.


All he could see was the hand slowly descending towards them. It was a looming, ominous threat. It was a sign that he screwed up. Hastiness lead to death, he knew that. Yet... Yet why did he rush into this labyrinth without thinking? He wanted to go home, he still wants to go home. He was done and tired, yet that wasn't an excuse for acting rashly and tossing himself into a situation like this. This... This wasn't like him in the slightest. The only reason Austin could think of was his own general discomfort. He wanted to escape back into solitude and not have to think. That was it... that surely was it.

Yet now he needed to think back and be on his feet. If he didn't... No, he wasn't going to die here. There was no way he was going to die here. There was still too much to do. Too much left blank in his mind. He hated this fog within his head... Hated the fog that claimed his memories. Fog... Haze... Wait. Haze. That was it. That was how they could escape. Wisp... Wisp... He needed Wisp.

"Wisp!" He shouted out, the Litwick reappearing within his arms. "Use Haze now!"

"Hold on tight buddy..." He whispered to his starter before shoving the candle solely into his right elbow. With his left arm, he grabbed his mask and ripped it off, throwing it approximately where the hand was. There was not point in hiding anymore. He then grabbed the Hex Maniac with his left arm and started to run.

"I know how we can get to the center, but this time I will need guidance. We'll need second sight to do so... I may have misjudged on what you can do, but I have a feeling this is something you can do. Since you're projecting yourself here... You must know the layout somewhat. At least. have a basic understanding to safely appear within this realm... And you know locations... So I'm going to entrust... my sight to you," Austin started to explain as they ran. He was starting to get out of breath; running was not his forte.


"And Wisp... I want you to use Haze... Whenever a hand approaches. I don't know how they see... But... It's hard to see something... when they're enveloped within dark fog..." He forced out, getting exacerbated for air. Come on adrenaline... Where was it. He needed to keep on running or he would die. He needed to continue running... continue running... continue...

Goddamn that rock. Myrtle’s focus drifted back to the stone she found in the backpack. There was some sort of strange allure there that she couldn’t quite figure out. She rummaged through your backpack once more, moving labocoats(?) and Chespin dolls aside to try and find it. She looked over her shoulder at the battle once more. Hedwig was easily proving to be a tougher opponent for the Malamar than Salazar, even if the constant shifting of type-matchups meant the ghost and squid had a constant and instantaneous battle advantage.

"OK, Hedwig, we gotta change our approach," you yelled. "Ominous Wind, let's go!”

Hedwig gave a confirming screech before swirling dark winds in her wings which she released ina spendorous fashion that erupted in ripples outwards, her body at the centre of the storm. The ghost child quickly stretched out his hands again and inverted the colours and type-matchups once more. The Malamar’s dark aura increased harshly as it did, seemingly signifying that it’s strength was growing as well for some reason. The new type-matchup had little effect this time, just as you had anticipated it to. The Winds blew and struck the Malamar with an Ominous energy, striking one if its typing for super-effective and the other lesser, adding up to a neutral hit which you could more than easily count on. The Malamar struggled a bit back by the strong blows your Crobat could deliver but sneered back eagerly. It charged up with energy once more, and you realize then the reason the type-matchups changed was to aid his own attack. The Malamar forcefully plummets into Hedwig’s body with a Superpower, squishing her between his gargantuan body and the cracked walls. The dark aura flashed in streaks as it amplified to indicate the Malamar’s continuously increasing strength.

Meanwhile, Myrtle found the Dusty Grey Stone in your backpack and ogled it viciously. She felt a strange presence inside that was calling out to her, beckoning to be released. The stone started glowing in her hands lightly, growing hotter in her hands as it did. She wanted to call Keith’s attention to it.

“Then use your Shadow Blast, and follow up with Venoshock!"

Another dark swirl of energy coalesced in the Crobat’s wings, this time of a darker energy than before. Hedwig’s eyes could even be said to have turned a shade darker as she blew a pressurized ball of air towards the Malamar, dark Shadows swimming across its surface which exploded in a Blast of howling winds and razor-sharp gusts. The attack was a supper-effective hit, regardless of the current type-matchups - and even lucked out on landing a critical hit - but the Malamar was not out of it yet and gave a monstrous cackle after returning his focus to the Crobat. It charged up another attack, Superpowered energy shaping its aura once more. It charged with near-explosive strength towards Hedwig, trapping her in his path as his tentacles wrapped around her body and slammed her hand against the ground, before trampling her with his sizable weight. A mall scare came over you as it dawned on you that Hedwig could no longer effectively move. Despite her increased powers, strength and level, even she succumbed to the ghost child and his Malamar’s tricks.

A small glimmer of hope came when the giant squid vomited more purple goo from its stomach, Toxic’s second installment having taken effect with a more potent poison, though it was still not enough to knock it out.

Myrtle called for your attention as well. The stone in her hand was now burning fiercely in her hands, a strong light coming off of it as sounds of cracking stone could be heard. The Dusty Grey Stone split in two along a cracked seam, revealing the stone’s inner sanctum to be of a beautiful and rare crystal. A single shard dropped loose and bounced with a slow ringing rhythm against the floor. Myrtle’s focus was now nearly completely on the strange crystal, and a gut feeling told you of its power.

Your plan had failed and the grey hand was looming closer with its grasp. You quickly called forth your Litwick. "Wisp! Use Haze now!"

The Liwick puffed his cheeks and blew a vast and cold mist that immediately obscured the space between you. You tore off your mask and threw it towards the hand, then grabbed the Hex Maniac by the hand and sped off in the other direction. The grey hand lurched forward and took a hold of the discarded mask mid-air. Its fingers twitched as it sampled what it had taken, stopping dead in its tracks before the sight of it disappeared in the Haze while you distanced yourself. You explained your plan to your ally. Perhaps if he couldn’t foresee the location of the Watchers, he could still lead the way with his psychic vision, believing the channeling of his spirit may grant him vision on the field. The two of you threw yourselves past walls and ruins one by one as you inched deeper into the labyrinth to get away from your attacker, the Haze creeping up as it expanded amongst the corridors and tunnels.

Eventually, when the two of you believe you’ve gained enough distance, the Hex maniac stops to rest against a wall, allowing you to catch your breath as well. The Hex Maniac pants in between his breath, as he finally manages to try and talk again. “I… can’t,” he stopped to take in another lungful of air, “see what’s ahead. It’s not like…” he pants, “I have some sudden psychic vision of what’s to come.” It would seem this plan was going to fail as well. “But,” his mischievous grin returned, “…I do know the lay-out of this place somewhat, even if I can’t see the Watchers.” He clasps your hand and pulls his face uncomfortably close to yours again. “Come on, I know where we can go,” he pulls you further along. “I don’t think the Watchers use sight to track people, they’re more like sharks who can sense a presence, but the Haze. I can sense it obscuring the vision in this area, even if only slightly.” You were pulled around a corner where another grey hand loomed up ahead, inching closer ever so slowly. True to your command, Wisp expelled another blow of mist to veil your position. “This way,” the Hex maniac pulls you in a different direction.

The plan was working, if only slightly. The presence of the Watchers was growing as more and more seemed to crop up each time, but with Wisps’ Haze and your spiritual guide leading you, you wormed your way back and forth between the corroding walls and ruined temples, escaping their clutches by an inch of a hair each time. (Player is free to describe these details somewhat)

With your back against, a wall, the two of you had to stop for breath again. The Hex Maniac leaned his head around the bend to look up ahead and cursed under his breath. He whispered to you to use Haze again, and after doing so realized why. The spiritualist crept away from the corner back to you, and a dark looming figure floated past you gently. He placed a finger against his mouth to urge you to be quiet. The Watcher wasn’t more than a few feet away from you and good easily grab a hold of you if it wanted to. You were urged to back away slowly through the mist, when you were stopped once again. Up ahead in the other direction, another Watcher loomed as it neared you. You were trapped between the two it seemed. The Hex Maniac muttered a bit under his breath, then took you by the hand as he led you back the way you came from, in exactly the opposite direction you needed to go. You slowly snuck past for a while, then suddenly sped off around corners and bends, following your guide.

You came upon a church of some kind, a basilica more precise, ruined from top to bottom in a decaying fashion that looked like a feather’s touch might make it implode. You were urged to get inside as behind and to both your sides you saw multiple Watchers hovering gently above the ground and converging to your location. Inside the church, a tattered display of dust and light spilling on rotten wood and chipped cobblestone, the Hex Maniac led you to the basilica’s staircase that spiraled with a narrow corridor to the highest tower. The staits were as corroded as the rest of the land and you had to be careful about your steps to ensure you wouldn’t fall as loose pieces of stone crumbled away under your foot.

Once at the top, you find out why the Hex Maniac led you to this location. It was single-handedly one of the highest vantage points you could have of the area. There was a small balcony surrounding the top, granting you a bird’s eye-view of your surroundings in all directions. As far as you could tell, you were dead-centre in the labyrinth, having come half-way on your journey. The small troupe of Pokémon you saw before were close now than before, and not too far off in the direction you were heading; towards the citadels’ temple that supposedly held the key to your escape. But wherever you looked, you couldn’t see it yet. Below, you could easily make out passageways you could take, and the dense presence of the Watchers and their surveilling path, thickest at the borders of your basilica. Other churches, temples and synagogues sprouted from the ground in half-erect fashion, each carrying its own towers.

You had come halfway so far, and could use this break to plan the next leg of your journey. You have a view of the maze-like structure of the city, enough to remember one or two paths you could take to the other side, but not enough to be able to remember every passageway. There are also other buildings you can use to hide in or traverse towards somehow if you need. You also have a small sense of the paths the Watchers use in their surveillance, in case it helps. Enough to avoid most, but not all of them, and the many that surrounded your current building would not allow you to escape without being detected by at least one. Wisp can continue using Haze but he might run out of breath at one point, forcing you to come up with a second strategy in case it would be needed.

And the battle raged on. Given the current situation, Keith's logic seemed sound- Shadow moves, which were super effective no matter what, and neutral hits, which could not be suddenly weakened by reversing the type matchups. Oh, and Venoshock- considering Malamar was poisoned, that was just common sense right there.

Alas, the strategy didn't hold up as well as Keith thought it would. Keith gritted his teeth- the ghost boy hastened to reverse the type matchups once more, and this time, the reason had more to do with offense than defense- it made Malamar's Superpower highly effective, and just two hits from the move were sufficient to topple Hedwig- she didn't even get a chance to use Venoshock.

"No! Hedwig!" Keith gasped as his Crobat fainted on the spot. This Malamar was even able to defeat one of Keith's strongest Pokémon?! How in the Distortion World was Keith supposed to be able to win against this thing?!

"Meat Sack!"

"Not now, Myrtle," Keith muttered, thinking fast, trying to work out just what he could even do here. Maybe Dudley could take on this Malamar? He was kinda running out of options... He could already see Meowth frantically shaking his head- the Scratch Cat Pokémon was terrified of this Malamar, and not without good reason, too-

"Meat Sack!"

"Myrtle, not now, I'm trying to think," Keith murmured as he withdrew Hedwig.

"Don't strain your-self," Myrtle responded snarkily. "Yes, now!!"

"OK, what is it?" Keith relented, sounding exasperated as he turned to the Banette, who in response held up the Dusty Grey Stone. Except it was now aglow with a strange light. "Wha...?" Keith murmured, just as the stone split in half, revealing its inner core. Keith's mouth fell open as a very distinctive crystal fell out, clattering on the floor. "...No way," Keith murmured as Myrtle dove down and scooped up the indescribably precious stone. The Mega Stone. "You're not telling me that's-"

"A Ba-net-tite," Myrtle smirked. "I am cer-tain of it. Meat Sack, I think it is my turn."

"Do you have the energy for it, though?" Keith asked.

Myrtle's smirk widened. "I helped my-self to a few Si-trus Ber-ries," she said. "Now, why don't you put that hat to good use, hmmm?"

In response, Keith finally broke into a grin. "Let's do it, then, Myrtle," he responded.

Myrtle grinned back, then turned to face the Malamar, Banettite gripped tightly in her cloth paws. She said nothing, merely flashing a confident smirk to both Malamar and ghost boy.

Keith gripped the brim of his Mega Hat. "Myrtle!" he exclaimed. "The time is now! Time to show the true power of a Missingno.!" And he swept the Mega Hat off his hat and held it up high. "Mega Evolve!!!" he exclaimed.

With that, tendrils of energy burst forth both from the Key Stone set into Keith's hat and from the Banettite Myrtle clutched. The tendrils found each other and connected, connecting the Mega Hat and the Banettite- connecting Keith and Myrtle. And the transformation took place- Myrtle's body changed drastically, with more zippers forming elsewhere, and the ones on her hands and lower body opening up, allowing claws and legs of pure cursed energy to emerge. And finally, the transformation was complete, a formidable standing before Keith. Amazingly, the claws and legs her cursed energy formed, they bore the same coloration and patterns as-

"...a Missingno.," Keith murmured wonderingly. He grinned, feeling even more confident than he' felt when sending Hedwig into battle. "Ready, now, Myrtle?" he asked.

"Na-tu-ral-ly, Meat Sack," Myrtle responded, her voice strangely echoey following the Mega Evolution.

"Then let's do this!" Keith declared. "Myrtle, use Foul Play, follow up with Shadow Bolt, and then give it a taste of your Phantom Force attack!"


*Keith obtained a Banettite!*

A shimmer of light surrounded the Banette as strange energy poured from your Mega Hat towards the crystal Myrtle was holding. With a strong sounding boom and a crack, the shimmer died down to reveal Myrtle’s Mega form.

"Ready, now, Myrtle?" you asked.

"Na-tu-ral-ly, Meat Sack."

Then let's do this!" you exclaimed.

"Myrtle, use Foul Play!”

Myrtle darted in towards her opponent. The ghost boy sneered darkly at her in turn. “Malamar, attack!”

“Mal-a-mar,” it cackled as it charged it’s attack. It’s two tentacles lashed out towards the Banette who in turn was cloaking herself in a dark energy. Just when the two were close to one another, the Banette easily avoided the Malamar’s first strike and grabbed a hold of his two tentacles. Fueled by the dark aura, she threw lunged them back towards her opponent in a Foul Play. Holding her grip on the two arms, she repeatedly slapped her opponent silly with his own strength.

"Yeah!" one of the other children erupted.

"Go Myrtle!" one of the others chimed in.

“Enough!” the boy shouted. He threw an arm up in the air and conjured up a giant dark disc on the ceiling. Strange shadows swirled around it’s center and etching of mystic symbols appeared on its side. Before either you or Myrtle knew what it was, small cackles of electricity poured out off it that struck the Banette dead-on with some light neutral damage, causing her grip to slip on one of the arms. The Malamar instinctively made immediate use of this and lashed out at his opponent. Myrtle was staggered back and forced off completely by the impromptu Psycho Cut.

“Follow up with Shadow Bolt!”

Myrtle obeyed and threw off a lightning crackle of her own at her opponent. The electric Bolt surged towards the Malamar with a dark cloak of Shadow, zapping the squid qith a super-effective blow, though one that was diminished in power due to it not being a same-type move as the non-Shadow Mega Banette, nor one that was her natural move, but it mattered little. This battle was going to be yours one way or another.

The dark portal remained looming ominously above the battlefield as the ghost child commanded his Malamar. “Attack!” he ordered fiercely. The Malamar instantly went into his all-familiar move of Superpower, charging his dark aura before plummeting his giant body into the smaller Banette. Within the confines of the Topsy-Turvy world, this meant it was a super-effective blow though one that didn’t hit nearly as hard as it did Salazar or Hedwig. Myrtle was not out yet.

“Malamar, again!”

“Give it a taste of your Phantom Force attack!"

The Malamar prepped his aura and charged hastily towards the Banette, but just when he got up close the ghost-type vanished in thin-air. The Overturning Pokémon immediately has to break to stop himself from crashing into the wall. It looked around confusingly, attempting to find the missing Banette, when it suddenly vomited once more. Toxic had struck its third turn. Myrtle immediately reappeared afterwards and gave a Forceful Phantom-like tackle into his gut, knocking the wind out of her opponent and forcing it back and off its feet. The gargantuan body crashed into the floor, knocked out.

The dark aura surrounding the Malamar was fading slowly, and lifted itself gently from its body towards the mysterious portal, then suddenly ripped itself off in a frantic surge. Gust of wind erupted from the center, and electricity surged in all directions, causing everyone to look for cover. “You can’t leave!” the kid panicked once more.

“What’s happening?” one of the other children begged for answers.

The battle wasn’t over and you still had a last opponent to deal with. A minor threat, but one that managed to create a portal of dark energy to conjure lightning from.

“Mister!” one of the kids shouted towards you over the roar of cyclone that was created. “Help! It’s trying to take us!” The four of them were holding on tightly to one another and the pieces of furniture, as the portal’s storm created a vortex that was slowly sucking them in. Even Myrtle could feel the tug on her ghostly being.

Around you, small pieces of furniture cracked and splintered as they were ripped off by the gales of dark lightning that now arced the room. “You can’t leave! You cheated!”

"Myrtle, use Foul Play!”

Myrtle darted in towards her opponent. The ghost boy sneered darkly at her in turn. “Malamar, attack!”

“Mal-a-mar,” it cackled as it charged it’s attack. It’s two tentacles lashed out towards the Banette who in turn was cloaking herself in a dark energy. Just when the two were close to one another, the Banette easily avoided the Malamar’s first strike and grabbed a hold of his two tentacles. Fueled by the dark aura, she threw lunged them back towards her opponent in a Foul Play. Holding her grip on the two arms, she repeatedly slapped her opponent silly with his own strength.

"Yeah!" one of the other children erupted.

"Go Myrtle!" one of the others chimed in.

“Enough!” the boy shouted. He threw an arm up in the air and conjured up a giant dark disc on the ceiling. Strange shadows swirled around it’s center and etching of mystic symbols appeared on its side. Before either you or Myrtle knew what it was, small cackles of electricity poured out off it that struck the Banette dead-on with some light neutral damage, causing her grip to slip on one of the arms. The Malamar instinctively made immediate use of this and lashed out at his opponent. Myrtle was staggered back and forced off completely by the impromptu Psycho Cut.

“Follow up with Shadow Bolt!”

Myrtle obeyed and threw off a lightning crackle of her own at her opponent. The electric Bolt surged towards the Malamar with a dark cloak of Shadow, zapping the squid qith a super-effective blow, though one that was diminished in power due to it not being a same-type move as the non-Shadow Mega Banette, nor one that was her natural move, but it mattered little. This battle was going to be yours one way or another.

The dark portal remained looming ominously above the battlefield as the ghost child commanded his Malamar. “Attack!” he ordered fiercely. The Malamar instantly went into his all-familiar move of Superpower, charging his dark aura before plummeting his giant body into the smaller Banette. Within the confines of the Topsy-Turvy world, this meant it was a super-effective blow though one that didn’t hit nearly as hard as it did Salazar or Hedwig. Myrtle was not out yet.

“Malamar, again!”

“Give it a taste of your Phantom Force attack!"

The Malamar prepped his aura and charged hastily towards the Banette, but just when he got up close the ghost-type vanished in thin-air. The Overturning Pokémon immediately has to break to stop himself from crashing into the wall. It looked around confusingly, attempting to find the missing Banette, when it suddenly vomited once more. Toxic had struck its third turn. Myrtle immediately reappeared afterwards and gave a Forceful Phantom-like tackle into his gut, knocking the wind out of her opponent and forcing it back and off its feet. The gargantuan body crashed into the floor, knocked out.

“NO!” the ghost boy shouted in anger. He turned his focus to Myrtle and conjured up another crackle of electricity from his portal, ready to strike. Keith could not help but grin. And why not? Myrtle's Mega Evolution signaled a shift in the battle's direction, and this became blatantly obvious as Myrtle started to attack. She turned Malamar's own attack on itself with a picture-perfect Foul Play, using the Overturning Pokémon's formidable strength against itself. The ghost kids were cheering for Myrtle by this point, which brought a small, genuine smile to the Mega Banette's zipper mouth. She followed up with Shadow Bolt, took a super effective Superpower beautifully, and then went for the Phantom Force, which was not only one of Myrtle's strongest attacks, but also had he added effect, as Keith knew full well, of prolonging the effects of Toxic for maximum damage.

And at long last, Myrtle reappeared, slamming into Malamar... and knocking it not only down, but also out. "Yes!" Keith cheered, but the victory was short-lived, for, quite predictably, Tommy was being a very, very poor sport about losing the battle. In desperation, he started doing something with the dark portal from earlier- now it was firing great arcs of lightning, and it was starting to suck in everything else in the room. Ghosts included. "Meat Sack!" Myrtle exclaimed, still in her Mega Evolved state (for it was abundantly clear this fight was not yet over). "It is try-ing to suck me in as well!"

One of the ghost children piped up as well, pleading for Keith's help. "I got this, don't worry!" Keith called back, while his mind raced frantically, trying to figure out just how he would back up these words. It was becoming clearer and clearer that he had to attack the sore loser ghost boy...

"Some-time to-day, Meat Sack, hmmm?" Myrtle called with a mixture of desperation and irritated impatience.

"Alright, let's try this, then!" Keith replied. "Myrtle, try and break his concentration with Screech! If that doesn't do the trick, we'll have to fight, so use Feint Attack, then follow it up with Sky Attack!!"

Keith's Final Chapter

Myrtle released a piercing Screech from her mouth, a sound that should have disturbed any hearing it. Over the roar of the shadow storm created though, the Screech’s effects were reduced somewhat and only made the ghost boy sneer furiously before angrily tossing more lightning towards Banette for some more light damage. Myrtle immediately danced her way into her next move and disappeared into the shadows before surprising the boy from behind suddenly and forcefully tackling him. The boy twisted form the force of the attack and regained his floating balance to turn towards the Banette. He stretched an arm in her direction but Myrtle was quick to continue into her next attack and coated herself in Flying-type energy. She immediately lurched upwards and past the ghost, avoiding the tendrils of dark electricity that were just thrown at her position.

“Quickly Myrtle!” one of the ghosts wailed.

Myrtle immediately zipped around in a somersaulting fashion and then dived furiously towards her opponent, charged with the energy she had accumulated before landing the Sky Attack. There was some resistance as the boy tried to push off Myrtle and the two struggled for a moment, shoving one another, when Myrtle’s attack persevered and pierced straight through the boy. A gaping hole was left in the spectral being’s shape where Myrtle had just bored her way through. Dark energy surged from the hole and into the dark portal above.

“NO!” he roared in defiance at what had happened. The gaping hole in his chest grew larger as the dark fabric tore violently away from his body. The shadows that emerged from the Malamar’s body now ripped themselves furiously and the storm grew further in size.

From where you where, you saw the body of the Malamar shrinking in size as more of the dark energy tore itself from his aura. Shadows started erupting from the ghost kid’s spirit, ripping themselves off. He shouted in anger at your and Myrtle. “You can’t leave! You cheated!”

“It’s not fair!” There was a clear hint of panic in his voice this time, as his and his Malamar’s body eroded in thin air. “It’s not fair,” he repeated. “You cheated.” The storm of shadow and electricity absorbed even more from your two opponents, removing their legs, their arms, their torso and then finally the rest of them, the child’s eyes set on you with angry defiance of what was happening to it.

“You can’t-“

As soon as the last of their two bodies was soaked up into the gaping hole above, the storm settled but the ominous glow of the portal remained.

“You did it mister!” The ghost all cheered for you, and their Inkays, now woken up, joined in their celebration of you.

Slowly, you saw the colours of the portal shift. The dark glow receded and brilliant white light started pouring out of it. First it was a pinprick, but soon afterwards a glittering ray of light as harsh as the sun beamed down from it, too brilliant to even want to look at it.

“What is that?” one of the kids asked. She floated up higher towards the ceiling, towards the beaming light.

“Wait Henry! It might be dangerous.”

The girl merely looked on in awe at the beaming light, then looked down at the others. “Don’t you hear that? Listen.”

The group remained quiet for a while, but you heard nothing.

“Yeah, I do” one of the others said with amazement. He too floated up and stopped beside his partner. “Come on guys, you can hear it really well when you’re close.” The other two children tore themselves away from their Inkay, who tried desperately to hold onto them and protest them getting near it. They paid no mind to their partner Pokémon though and gently floated up beside their friends.

“I can hear it…”one said. “It sounds like whispering.”

“It sounds like home,” one of the others said.

The Inkay called out to them pleadingly, fearful of what it was, but the begging fell on deaf ears. The ghosts slowly ascended up higher towards the beaming light, which suddenly erupted violently to cover the entire room, until nothing but white could be seen. The light was warm and soothing though. You didn’t know what was coming over you, but for a moment you and all your Pokémon felt peaceful. And then the feeling tore itself away from all of you. The ray of light reduced itself to a pinprick and then vanished into nothing, leaving no trace of the portal behind. All around you it was dead quiet, dust slowly settling in its place. There was not a trace of the Inkays, the ghosts, Tommy or the Malamar. Aside from the violently overthrown room, there was not an inkling of evidence of anything spiritual in the room. You and your Pokémon were completely alone in the room. The faint feeling you felt when the light appeared from the portal washed over you; a feeling of the room being at peace.

By the time you get outside, you notice the Hypno you saw earlier waiting for you, both his hand leaning on his diamond-headed cane. “So,” he says. “Did you find what you came for?” He looked at you with slight amazement. “I could feel the presence shift inside. You must have had quite the ordeal.” His face became one of dour contemplation. “Play is such an important part of life; wouldn’t you agree?” alluding to what he said the last time you met. “Life can be harsh, throwing you around and at times spit in your face. But it’s the small moments, the ones in which you engage in games that may at times make it all seem worth it. Don’t you agree?”

“The children here were trapped, obviously. This island doesn’t allow much in the way of passage for the spirits. I had hoped that by keeping them inside, they wouldn’t have to face the world and realize this on their own. But their sanity might slowly wither away if something weren’t to happen soon. I’ve seen it happen before, spirits that have been outraged at their deaths, ghost in turmoil at remaining trapped in a world they don’t belong any more. There is a similar such presence at the heart of this island; the Ghost Train, where it all started. I had hoped that allowing you entry into the building, you might have entertained the children somewhat, give them some small piece of mind. But never would I have imagined you’d do more than that. I can’t detect their presence inside the building any more. They must have moved on. See for yourself,” he looks up towards the skies. Above you loomed the ominous dark clouds of Phantom Isle, the ones that had come so soon after the spectral catastrophe struck the island, never having left since. But you note a small parting in between the clouds, where light after all these years managed to shine down onto the Funhouse. The moment last only briefly, as the small opening was easily overcame by the thick blanket surrounding it, but the hint of a small gap remained.

“Still,” he said solemnly. “Not all the children were saved, were they? I could feel one lashing out at you in anger. You must have done something terrible to upset him like that. I fear his spirit has been broken and destroyed, lost to the ether for all eternity.” He takes his top hat, rests it against his chest and closes his eyes; paying respect to the dead.

“But I can’t fault you entirely for this,” he swivels his hat back on top of his head. “You weren’t alone in this endeavor. Speaking of which…” You were suddenly surprised by two paper-thin tentacles wrapping around your eyes. Myrtle and Meowth were equally startled by having the same done to them.

“Ink-inkay,” they cheerfully chirp as they release their hold and float towards the Hypno.

“Yes, you did a fine job, all of you. Thank you."

“Ink-inkay” one of them chirps and points a tentacle in your direction.

“Hmm, I see. I’m not surprised you’d want to. Go ahead, you earned it.”

“Ink-Inkay!” it said loudly.

“This Inkay appears to be thoroughly impressed by you,” the Hypno says. “I had initially provided them with the task of looking after the children, but with them gone now these Inkay are looking for a new purpose. They want to know if they can join you.”

“Inkay!”

The Hypno chuckles a bit. “He seems to be interested in knowing what you’re going to do next. But first…” He lifts his cane and swiftly smacks it down, narrowly missing you. For a brief moment you thought he was about to attack you when you suddenly notice the Malamar had appeared by your side, having returned to its normal size.”

“Maaal!” it cried as the diamond-head connected with his top. It gently rubbed its scalp in pain.

“You were supposed to look after the children, not be their puppet.” The Hypno let the words rest for a while. “And now the child is gone, forever.”

“Maaalll.” The Malamar appeared to be equally saddened by that fact.

“I will have to look what to do with you later. For now though,” he turns back to you, “I’ll provide you this as my offering of thanks, and bid you farewell.” Just like with the walkie-talkies, he conjured up a plastic disc in his hand and gave it to you. Each of the four Inkay also gave you a small something as their thanks. The Hypno then produced a dark purple flame around himself, the Malamar and the Inkay, consuming them entirely before vanishing along with them.

You were left in the quiet and desolated park of Phantom Isle. The small opening above the Funhouse barely visible, but a constant reminder of what you had accomplished. Phantom Isle was long away from being cleansed entirely, but you had somehow managed to struck a small blow in its favour.

Epilogue 1.0
The Hypno trotted on through the empty hallways of the sixth floor, his cane tapping along his stride with an echoing rhythm, practically announcing his coming. He came up to the room he was looking for and entered. The room was entirely covered in darkness, with the only light coming from the monitors that were arranged erratically along the wall. Each of the monitors projected security footage of the park. Lone trainers and their Pokémon could be seen running about, the cameras gently moving with them so that each of their actions were properly followed. There was a girl and a Houndour heading for the Mantine Mania. Two other trainers were both heading for the Ghost Train, though the security tag revealed it to have been a recording and not live. There was another girl about to head into the Fortune Teller’s Tent. He would have to quickly intercept her before it was too late. He had already made the same mistake with those other two. He would still have to answer for that.

But the Hypno’s sight didn’t fall on the monitors for long. He was accustomed to them and well aware of the current situations. Instead his attention immediately fell on the creature behind the desk which was closely examining the screens. The Hypno bent down on one knee. “Master,” he waited for a reply. The creature kept its focus on the monitors. “I have returned from the Funhouse.” He waited for a while. “Camera 2-C.” The creature said nothing, but one of the security screens rewound itself. The events of Keith Golbatson Masters played out on the screen. His meet-up with the Hypno, Nero as he was called, and a few stray events of the ongoings inside the building, though only those where its Topsy-Turvy effects didn’t interrupt the cameras. Finally, the entrance popped up again, and a huge beam of light descended down on the building. This was what Nero came to report.

“Master,” he tries again. “The Funhouse.”

The creature gave a low moan, turned and came up close to his subordinate, the light of the monitors spilling on his large body to reveal the reaper. “Dusk-noir?”

“Yes, master. Our plan. It worked.”

The Ghost Train

“...hey there. You want out of here too?" you cooed to the wisp. You had no idea what the fog veiled; a Pokémon or a child, but you felt the wisp might have been useful somehow. "If you help me out here, we should be able to return together. I'm gonna go see that Virgil guy, if you could follow us there, but keep out of sight of him."

Whether it was because the wisp couldn’t or wouldn’t make a noise, you couldn’t tell. Instead, it merely hopped slowly left and right, which in as best as you could tell meant it was happy.

You partnered up with a… wisp? You have no idea what it is, and it has no arms or legs it seems. The wisp can follow simple orders and perform simple tasks only.

The next step, as you took a literal step in the direction, was to go to the conductor’s office and speak to Virgil. You ordered the wisp to stay out of sight though, which it gladly obeyed by moving around the alcove to nestle by the side of the wall beneath a closed window. You however went to the other side, passed a second closed window and entered through the open doorway. The small corridor immediately turned to the right, and opposite you, in the corner of the hallway, lay Virgil’s tiny office crammed with scattered paperwork, pictures and office supplies. His desk, a regular size by all accounts, too up most of the space, and Virgil had to gently manoeuvre himself around it to get out of his office.

“Ah, I see you’ve come,” he greets you. As he wavers a bit in place, you realise that a number of keys were hung on the wall behind him in his office. To your side, a few paces down the corridor, lies a quaint break room of dusty, white tables, drink vendors and snacks, though not many of it seemed touched. The room was dully crowded with corpses in various states of decay, looking sombre as they spoke in muttered tones with one another. You also note that there were two windows in the break room on separate walls, closed and most likely the ones you saw outside.

Virgil called for your attention. “We should probably get you your uniform first and then find you a job to do. There should be a couple left in the changing room. If you move through the break room, you’ll find another hallway that leads out of the station. There are showers, lockers and a changing room at the end. I’ve checked the records, and lockers #302, #427 and #619 should still be available.” He mumbled a bit to himself about having to change the numbering system one of these days. “You should find a uniform in each as well as a starting kit, so go look and take your pick.”

“Boss.” A couple of zombies walked up to both of you.

“Ah, you’ve finally managed to show yourselves,” he made no effort to hide his annoyance. “Sure took your sweet time.”

One of the other two zombies gave but a sigh. “Yes boss, you see-“

“Now are you ready to get moving?” Virgil interrupted him.

“That’s what I’m trying to say. Every-“

“Because that blasted train ain’t moving itself.”

“Yes sir, but the problem is that we’re short one person and everyone else is currently busy or on break.”

“What are you talking about? You’ve got the two of you. More than enough to move that blasted train, right?”

“No sir, we need a steerer, a spotter and someone to control the switchboard.”

Virgil grumbled a bit to himself. This was your chance. You had an idea of where the key might be hidden, a wisp waiting for you outside, a locker with a starting kit and a moving crew looking for an extra member.

What do you want to do?

As he entered the office, the wisp took heed of his call to remain out of sight, hiding in a small alcove near the doorway, as it appeared to be happy, as far as a ball of spiritual energy could be emotional at least. Heading through the door, he found the office to be surprisingly small, a desk taking up much of the floorspace and mounds of paperwork taking up the rest of it. Behind the desk, Virgil got up and snaked his way around the desk, greeting Alex, and as he gave him a small raise of the hand and wave, the human's eyes drifted to the keys behind him, which were likely the ones the skeleton spoke of. Returning attention to Virgil, he listened to the zombie.

As his mind wandered, he noticed just a few paces down the hallway was a breakroom, equally full of undead in sombre moods, muttering among themselves, as well as some windows, getting a feel for the place when Virgil spoke up. To his lack of surprise, the seemingly self-appointed stationmaster was quite eager for Alex to start working off a debt he didn't have, motioning towards the breakroom and giving him directions to the locker room, with three lockers that were still open with numbers on them. Before Alex could do anything though, a pair of zombies lumbered to the pair, addressing Virgil as the boss.

The situation, as things were, came to the fact that they lacked enough hands to move the train. There was need of a spotter, steerer and switchboard operator, the third of which set off alarm bells in his mind. At least, when they managed to spout it forth with Virgil's persistent interruptions. As Virgil grumbled, the recently deceased human realised that the opportunity was presenting itself on a plate. It wouldn't be too tough to get onto the crew, and if he posited for the switchboard, he could very well end up with the key without anything sneaky. Of course, he'd need a uniform, and on reflection locker #427 sounded the best one, solely based on the fact that it was a random number.

"I guess I could help out once I get my uniform," he spoke up, a slight hint of readiness in his voice, "what's each of the jobs for? I think I can do pretty much anything." It wasn't a long shot per se, but if it meant getting onto the crew to move said train, it was an easy enough option, and if it meant getting Virgil off his back while he carried out what was needed, the better. If he couldn't get the key for the switchboard through hopping onto the crew, then he'd find another method.

As Alex waited for the response, he couldn't help but feel as though he was missing something. The odd yellow figure had warned them that the train wasn't for them, and yet the train had arrived and awaited them. Was it taking him here for a reason? He pushed these thoughts to the back of his mind, however, and instead looked at Virgil and the other crew members, waiting for a reply.

She immediately lurched upwards and past the ghost, avoiding the tendrils of dark electricity that were just thrown at her position.

“Quickly Myrtle!” one of the ghosts wailed.

Myrtle immediately zipped around in a somersaulting fashion and then dived furiously towards her opponent, charged with the energy she had accumulated before landing the Sky Attack. There was some resistance as the boy tried to push off Myrtle and the two struggled for a moment, shoving one another, when Myrtle’s attack persevered and pierced straight through the boy. A gaping hole was left in the spectral being’s shape where Myrtle had just bored her way through. Dark energy surged from the hole and into the dark portal above.

“NO!” he roared in defiance at what had happened. The gaping hole in his chest grew larger as the dark fabric tore violently away from his body. The shadows that emerged from the Malamar’s body now ripped themselves furiously and the storm grew further in size.

From where you where, you saw the body of the Malamar shrinking in size as more of the dark energy tore itself from his aura. Shadows started erupting from the ghost kid’s spirit, ripping themselves off. He shouted in anger at your and Myrtle. “You can’t leave! You cheated!”

“It’s not fair!” There was a clear hint of panic in his voice this time, as his and his Malamar’s body eroded in thin air. “It’s not fair,” he repeated. “You cheated.” The storm of shadow and electricity absorbed even more from your two opponents, removing their legs, their arms, their torso and then finally the rest of them, the child’s eyes set on you with angry defiance of what was happening to it.

“You can’t-“

As soon as the last of their two bodies was soaked up into the gaping hole above, the storm settled but the ominous glow of the portal remained.

“You did it mister!” The ghost all cheered for you, and their Inkays, now woken up, joined in their celebration of you.

Slowly, you saw the colours of the portal shift. The dark glow receded and brilliant white light started pouring out of it. First it was a pinprick, but soon afterwards a glittering ray of light as harsh as the sun beamed down from it, too brilliant to even want to look at it.

“What is that?” one of the kids asked. She floated up higher towards the ceiling, towards the beaming light.

“Wait Henry! It might be dangerous.”

The girl merely looked on in awe at the beaming light, then looked down at the others. “Don’t you hear that? Listen.”

The group remained quiet for a while, but you heard nothing.

“Yeah, I do” one of the others said with amazement. He too floated up and stopped beside his partner. “Come on guys, you can hear it really well when you’re close.” The other two children tore themselves away from their Inkay, who tried desperately to hold onto them and protest them getting near it. They paid no mind to their partner Pokémon though and gently floated up beside their friends.

“I can hear it…”one said. “It sounds like whispering.”

“It sounds like home,” one of the others said.

The Inkay called out to them pleadingly, fearful of what it was, but the begging fell on deaf ears. The ghosts slowly ascended up higher towards the beaming light, which suddenly erupted violently to cover the entire room, until nothing but white could be seen. The light was warm and soothing though. You didn’t know what was coming over you, but for a moment you and all your Pokémon felt peaceful. And then the feeling tore itself away from all of you. The ray of light reduced itself to a pinprick and then vanished into nothing, leaving no trace of the portal behind. All around you it was dead quiet, dust slowly settling in its place. There was not a trace of the Inkays, the ghosts, Tommy or the Malamar. Aside from the violently overthrown room, there was not an inkling of evidence of anything spiritual in the room. You and your Pokémon were completely alone in the room. The faint feeling you felt when the light appeared from the portal washed over you; a feeling of the room being at peace.

By the time you get outside, you notice the Hypno you saw earlier waiting for you, both his hand leaning on his diamond-headed cane. “So,” he says. “Did you find what you came for?” He looked at you with slight amazement. “I could feel the presence shift inside. You must have had quite the ordeal.” His face became one of dour contemplation. “Play is such an important part of life; wouldn’t you agree?” alluding to what he said the last time you met. “Life can be harsh, throwing you around and at times spit in your face. But it’s the small moments, the ones in which you engage in games that may at times make it all seem worth it. Don’t you agree?”

“The children here were trapped, obviously. This island doesn’t allow much in the way of passage for the spirits. I had hoped that by keeping them inside, they wouldn’t have to face the world and realize this on their own. But their sanity might slowly wither away if something weren’t to happen soon. I’ve seen it happen before, spirits that have been outraged at their deaths, ghost in turmoil at remaining trapped in a world they don’t belong any more. There is a similar such presence at the heart of this island; the Ghost Train, where it all started. I had hoped that allowing you entry into the building, you might have entertained the children somewhat, give them some small piece of mind. But never would I have imagined you’d do more than that. I can’t detect their presence inside the building any more. They must have moved on. See for yourself,” he looks up towards the skies. Above you loomed the ominous dark clouds of Phantom Isle, the ones that had come so soon after the spectral catastrophe struck the island, never having left since. But you note a small parting in between the clouds, where light after all these years managed to shine down onto the Funhouse. The moment last only briefly, as the small opening was easily overcame by the thick blanket surrounding it, but the hint of a small gap remained.

“Still,” he said solemnly. “Not all the children were saved, were they? I could feel one lashing out at you in anger. You must have done something terrible to upset him like that. I fear his spirit has been broken and destroyed, lost to the ether for all eternity.” He takes his top hat, rests it against his chest and closes his eyes; paying respect to the dead.

“But I can’t fault you entirely for this,” he swivels his hat back on top of his head. “You weren’t alone in this endeavor. Speaking of which…” You were suddenly surprised by two paper-thin tentacles wrapping around your eyes. Myrtle and Meowth were equally startled by having the same done to them.

“Ink-inkay,” they cheerfully chirp as they release their hold and float towards the Hypno.

“Yes, you did a fine job, all of you. Thank you."

“Ink-inkay” one of them chirps and points a tentacle in your direction.

“Hmm, I see. I’m not surprised you’d want to. Go ahead, you earned it.”

“Ink-Inkay!” it said loudly.

“This Inkay appears to be thoroughly impressed by you,” the Hypno says. “I had initially provided them with the task of looking after the children, but with them gone now these Inkay are looking for a new purpose. They want to know if they can join you.”

“Inkay!”

The Hypno chuckles a bit. “He seems to be interested in knowing what you’re going to do next. But first…” He lifts his cane and swiftly smacks it down, narrowly missing you. For a brief moment you thought he was about to attack you when you suddenly notice the Malamar had appeared by your side, having returned to its normal size.”

“Maaal!” it cried as the diamond-head connected with his top. It gently rubbed its scalp in pain.

“You were supposed to look after the children, not be their puppet.” The Hypno let the words rest for a while. “And now the child is gone, forever.”

“Maaalll.” The Malamar appeared to be equally saddened by that fact.

“I will have to look what to do with you later. For now though,” he turns back to you, “I’ll provide you this as my offering of thanks, and bid you farewell.” Just like with the walkie-talkies, he conjured up a plastic disc in his hand and gave it to you. Each of the four Inkay also gave you a small something as their thanks. The Hypno then produced a dark purple flame around himself, the Malamar and the Inkay, consuming them entirely before vanishing along with them.

You were left in the quiet and desolated park of Phantom Isle. The small opening above the Funhouse barely visible, but a constant reminder of what you had accomplished. Phantom Isle was long away from being cleansed entirely, but you had somehow managed to struck a small blow in its favour.

Epilogue 1.0
The Hypno trotted on through the empty hallways of the sixth floor, his cane tapping along his stride with an echoing rhythm, practically announcing his coming. He came up to the room he was looking for and entered. The room was entirely covered in darkness, with the only light coming from the monitors that were arranged erratically along the wall. Each of the monitors projected security footage of the park. Lone trainers and their Pokémon could be seen running about, the cameras gently moving with them so that each of their actions were properly followed. There was a girl and a Houndour heading for the Mantine Mania. Two other trainers were both heading for the Ghost Train, though the security tag revealed it to have been a recording and not live. There was another girl about to head into the Fortune Teller’s Tent. He would have to quickly intercept her before it was too late. He had already made the same mistake with those other two. He would still have to answer for that.

But the Hypno’s sight didn’t fall on the monitors for long. He was accustomed to them and well aware of the current situations. Instead his attention immediately fell on the creature behind the desk which was closely examining the screens. The Hypno bent down on one knee. “Master,” he waited for a reply. The creature kept its focus on the monitors. “I have returned from the Funhouse.” He waited for a while. “Camera 2-C.” The creature said nothing, but one of the security screens rewound itself. The events of Keith Golbatson Masters played out on the screen. His meet-up with the Hypno, Nero as he was called, and a few stray events of the ongoings inside the building, though only those where its Topsy-Turvy effects didn’t interrupt the cameras. Finally, the entrance popped up again, and a huge beam of light descended down on the building. This was what Nero came to report.

“Master,” he tries again. “The Funhouse.”

The creature gave a low moan, turned and came up close to his subordinate, the light of the monitors spilling on his large body to reveal the reaper. “Dusk-noir?”

“Yes, master. Our plan. It worked.”
The Screech attack. A highly effective way to lower one's Defense. Normally, anyway. As a sound-based move, there are ways of lessening its effectiveness. Keith once heard tell of an Ability called Cacophony that functioned much the same way as Soundproof, though no Pokémon was ever documented to actually have it. Presumably it would serve to drown out oncoming sound moves. For sure that sort of principle was at work here, for the deafening roar of the portal made the Screech much harder to hear, and its effects, therefore, much harder to feel.

"Gah," Keith grunted at this. "We've got to fight, then! Myrtle, use Feint Attack!"

"On it," Myrtle grunted back, vanishing into the shadows and reappearing to land an unavoidable blow against Tommy. The furious ghost boy made to strike back, but by this point, both Keith and Myrtle knew what was to be done.

"OK! Let's finish this as only a Missingno. can!" Keith called out, turning his hat backwards. "Myrtle! Sky Attack now!!!"

Myrtle's zipper mouth broke out in an unmistakable grin, visible only for a moment before her cloth body and pixellated claws and legs took on a harsh glow. This glow, Keith could have sworn it took on an all-too-familiar L shape as Myrtle flew up, and then lunged! No Supersonic Skystrike could have been this intense, at least not in Keith's opinion. With the ghost children cheering her on, Myrtle landed the Sky Attack, winning out against the resistance Tommy put up, and leaving a gaping hole in the ghost.

What happened next was intense. The Malamar's dark aura was torn away from it, and its extra size along with. Tommy kept screaming at Keith and Myrtle, that they couldn't leave, that they cheated, and, with a note of panic in his voice, that it wasn't fair. All while shadows were ripped from his body (for lack of a better term, considering his decidedly spectral status). And once both Tommy and Malamar were absorbed by the storm completely, said storm subsided... but the portal remained.

Right now, though, the fight was over. As if to drive home this point, Myrtle reverted to her normal form, cloth paws clutching her new Banettite once again. The remaining ghosts all cheered for Keith, which got him smiling. His opinion on these ghost children had shifted considerably over the course of the night, and now, far from fearing them, he felt good about helping them.

And then the portal changed. Slowly the colors shifted from dark to a brilliant white light, harsh as a ray of sunlight. And the ghost kids seemed very much drawn to it, much to the horror of their Inkay. They could all hear something, something Keith could not. Whispering of some sort. One of them stated that it sounded like home. The Inkay were pleading with them to not go into the light, but their pleas went unheeded. And Keith... Keith said nothing. He exchanged significant looks with Meowth and Myrtle. This must be, he realized, the ghosts getting an opportunity to move on. And once the ghosts hit the portal, FLASH! The light erupted suddenly, covering the whole room. There was nothing but white to be seen, and for a moment, it felt peaceful. Warm. Happy.

And as soon as the feeling came over Keith, it was just as quickly ripped away. The ray of light shrank down to a pinprick, and then was gone. No trace of the portal remained. The Inkay, the ghosts, Tommy, the Malamar, not a trace of any of them. It felt... it felt as though the room, disheveled as it was, was at peace.

"...So did dey-" Meowth spoke up at last, breaking the lengthy silence.

Keith nodded. "I think they've moved on," he confirmed. "I think... I hope they're at peace now." Then he looked at Myrtle. "Y'know," he said to her. "You've confronted your grudge all those years ago. Myrtle... you could've gone with them." It pained him to say this, but at the same time, he did have to think about what was best for his Pokémon.

But Myrtle smiled and shook her head. "The grudge may have been what brought me back, but it is not all that keeps me here," she said. "Some-day I am sure my time will come, but it will be my call to make. Not all ghosts re-main be-hind be-cause they can-not move on. Some, such as my-self, such as He-le-na, such as Peeves and Li-li-a-na, such as Chuck, we stay be-hind be-cause we wish to be with those we care a-bout."

"So you admit you care about me?" Keith asked with a grin. And to his utter astonishment, Myrtle responded by floating over to him and giving him a hug.

"...I think I can stand to ad-mit it just this once," Myrtle conceded as Keith hugged the Banette back.

Once Myrtle abruptly broke up the hug and snapped that the "damn mu-shy mo-ment" was over and never to be spoken of again, they ventured outside once again, the way forward obstructed no longer. And once out there, they saw none other than the Hypno from before, leaning on his cane. Keith gave a small chuckle as he repeated his words from before, about play being such an important part of life. "You know what? I can't say I can argue with that," Keith nodded.

Hypno went on to explain. Obviously, the ghost children had been trapped. It was Hypno's doing- his logic being that if the kids were kept in the funhouse, they wouldn't have to face the world and learn for themselves that Phantom Isle does not accommodate much in the way of passage for spirits. But the concern became the sanity of the ghost children, Hypno stating that he'd seen such a thing happen before, such as the presence on the Ghost Train at the heart of Phantom Isle. It was Hypno's hope that Keith would be able to entertain the ghost children, provide them some peace of mind, but Keith, it seems, had gone above and beyond in a big way- the ghosts must have moved on. And he looked up to the skies, with the indication that Keith should do likewise. And sure enough, as Keith looked, he saw a small gap in the normally relentless cloud cover above the funhouse. Small and short-lived, but unmistakably there.

But then, Hypno lamented a fact that Keith had suspected might be the case- not all of them had moved on. Tommy's spirit had been broken and destroyed, lost for all eternity. At this, Keith removed his Mega Hat, copying Hypno's movements. He recalled not even wanting to attack Tommy, having only done so out of necessity, but that didn't lessen the guilt any. But even so, Hypno reassured Keith that the blame could not be attributed solely to him. And before he could mention exactly who else shared in the blame, Keith found his vision suddenly obscured by a pair of paper-thin tentacles. "Wha?!" Keith half-laughed.

"Gah! Wat da-" exclaimed Meowth, as the same thing happened to him.

"Son of a-!" Myrtle exclaimed.

It was, of course, the Inkay. Keith couldn't help but give a relieved chuckle- his opinion of them, as well, had altered over the course of the night. Evidently they had been doing what they did on Hypno's orders, and according to Hypno, doing it well. Then, one of them pointed at Keith and chirped a question, to which the Hypno's answer was affirmative. Keith looked curiously at this Inkay, a sneaking suspicion as to what this was about. And sure enough, Hypno confirmed said suspicion- Inkay wanted to go with Keith. "You do?" Keith said to Inkay, giving the matter some consideration. But before there could be that much deliberation, Hypno brought down the diamond head of his cane on... the Malamar next to Keith? It was Tommy's Malamar, back to its normal size. Hypno scolded Malamar for becoming Tommy's puppet, and reiterating the fact that Tommy was now gone forever, a fact that Malamar seemed very much saddened by.

"Hey, Malamar," Keith said. "For what it's worth, I don't blame you. You did the best you could, same as me. Even if it doesn't mean everything goes according to plan, it's still all anyone can ask of anyone." He gave Malamar a small, reassuring smile as he said this and patted the Overturning Pokémon's back.

Following this, however, Hypno and the Inkay each gave Keith an item- a TM from the Hypno, and a Pearl from each of the Inkay. As Hypno made to disappear and bring the Inkay and Malamar with him, however, Keith spoke up. "Inkay, wait," he said, addressing the Inkay who had voiced an interest in coming with him. "So, you really want to come along with us?" he asked.

"Inkay! Inkay!" chirped Inkay, flipping over and over in midair by way of an affirmative response. "Inkay ink?" he asked hopefully.

Keith said nothing at first, though the smile he gave Inkay and the gleam in his eye both betrayed the answer he was holding back. "Well, what can I say, except welcome to the team?" smiled Keith. "All we need for you is a name, little guy... We could maybe name you after one of those children, if you like," he suggested.

"Ink..." murmured Inkay, considering this. "Ink Inkay?" he asked.

"Inkay's wondering if youse likes da sound o' da name George," Meowth translated. "Dat must'a been da ghost kid he was lookin' afta," he speculated, Inkay nodding to confirm this.

Keith smiled at this. "Well, hard to argue with that logic," he said. "You want the name George? You got it," he smiled.

"Inkay!" chirped George happily in response.

"All right," Keith continued, digging the second Lure Ball out of the three he'd been given out of his backpack and enlarging it. "Welcome to the team, George," he said. "Now! Go, Lure Ball!" And with that, he threw the modified Blu Apricorn at the newly nicknamed Inkay. The ball sucked George inside and clattered to the ground, wobbling around for but a few seconds.

"And a-no-ther one joins the team," Myrtle commented as the ball clicked shut.

"All right!" Keith grinned as he picked up the Lure Ball and held it up high. "I just caught... an Inkay!"

"Meowth, dat's right!" Meowth chimed in.

Keith took this opportunity to look at Meowth and Myrtle. "Guys... let's go home," he said.

"Best idea I heard all night," Meowth said at once, climbing back up onto Keith's shoulder.

"No, first we are stop-ping by the Bou-tique," Myrtle objected, holding up the Banettite. "You are get-ting this fit-ted in-to a zip-per pull or some-thing for me and He-le-na, Meat Sack."

"Oh, no, he ain't, "Meowth objected. "Dat can wait fer da mornin'!"

"If he knows what is good for him, he knows it can-not wait," Myrtle hissed back.

Keith said nothing, rolling his eyes and smiling as he walked, while Meowth and Myrtle continued to bicker. "Welcome aboard, George," he said to the Lure Ball in his hand. "Out of one madhouse and into another."

The Ghost Train

There was still something about the train that was gnawing at your mind. That strange yellow creature had tried to quickly warn you the train wasn’t for you or the boy Austin. But then what was it’s purpose if the very conductors of the afterlife didn’t want it either? There was clearly something else at play here but none seemed to have any direct answers for you. You pushed back these thoughts for a moment when your coworkers responded.

Virgil chuckled. “Getting straight into it. Now that’s what I like to see.” He turned to the other two. “You best take a page from him, he’ll be a valuable asset for sure.” The other two undead merely rolled their three eyes at their boss’ comment. One directed his answer at you.

“The three tasks are rather easy. The steerer as you can guess-“

“Not now,” Virgil interrupted them. “The boy doesn’t even have his uniform yet. You can inform him later. First,” he looked back at you, “go to the lockers and pick up your uniform. There should be three available. Pick whatever suits you and meet up with them by the train. I still need to talk to these two.”

The other two undead merely nodded with sighed approval. “Meet us at the train, we’ll explain there.”

You were ushered to the changing room. Past the breakroom, where you were curiously ogled by some of the other undead, there was a small hallway leading up to a small space with neatly lined up lockers. None of the numbering seemed to make much sense but you could easily identify the three remaining ones you could use as they were the only ones not locked. One locker contained a uniform that was very tight and might restrict your movement. The second locker contained an outfit that was too big, and might cause you to trip from its bagginess. The third was just right, fitting you like a glove. Unfortunately the very same one reeked to high heavens as if, as you’d expect, it was previously worn by a corpse. After picking your uniform from the three available (in whatever locker number you want), you had to change clothes. In addition, the starter kit you were provided with contained nothing of much interest. A flashlight that didn’t require batteries for some reason, the Locker Key, an Energy Root and a Thick Club. Of these latter two you weren’t sure if they were supposed to be part of the starting kit or if they were left by the former owner.

Outside, the two zombies were waiting for you by the train. On your way, you'd have a chance to relay any task or order to the wisp if you wanted. The two were talking, something that seemed to trouble them, though they hushed up the moment you approached. “Well then, I suppose condolences are in order. First day here, and you’re working already. Mind you, despite what Virgil says, I don’t think working harder is going to make your due pass by an quicker.”

“Leave him be,” the other protested. “He probably has enough to worry about.”

“I didn’t mean anything by it,” he appeared apologetic, or as apologetic as an undead could. “So back to the matter at hand. The name’s Glamr. This here is Gjen.” Gjen merely raised a hand in salute. “Now as for the task at hand. It’s not really a three-person job. One could easily do it, but it certainly helps to have a few more with you. One person obviously needs to power the train and steer it correctly on the tracks. We need a second as a look-out. Being careful that there’s no one inside or that anyone enters, as well as clearing the tracks along the way or ushering the crowd apart. You probably saw the huge crowd inside, they sometimes end up on the tracks, though not often. The third can move ahead to the switchboard. Once we move the train, we need to get it on the right track. There’s a rotating platform up ahead that we use to steer the trains onto the tracks we want,” he was explaining the exact same thing the skeleton was doing, “we’ll be using that to move it to storage.”

“Is there really any point though,” Gjen spoke.

“Hush, it doesn’t matter. If Virgil commands it, we’d better get to it.” Glamr turns back to you. “I should explain what my partner meant, since you’re bound to be around for a long time anyhow. This train isn’t ours, as Virgil probably told you. It appears out of nowhere, and then it vanishes without a trace.”

“So then what’s the point? If it’s going to disappear again we might as well leave it and spare us the trouble. Not like we have anything else moving in or out anyhow.”

Glamr merely sighed at his partner and repeated the name carefully; “V-I-R-G-I-L.”

“Right.”

“Honestly kid, this is the real reason we want a third with us. None of trust this damn train. We don’t know where it comes from or where it goes, but there’s clearly something evil about it. I can feel it in my bones.”

“So he wants you here because he’s scared to be alone.”

“Hush now, why did you have to go and tell him THAT. Anyhow,” he turns back to the matter at hand. “Since this is your first time, we thought we’d give you the easy job. I’ll try to direct the train while Gjen here controls the platform.” Gjen waves again, showcasing the key in his hand as he did. “So that would leave you with the job of making sure the path is clear, and checking the train for any funny business. There might be a bit of running involved, hopping on and off the train, but we’ll be moving at a steady pace. There’s usually not that much trouble either, so it’s an easy job for your first time.”

The three jobs were briefly explained, and you were assigned the task of the one who wouldn’t control the platform. You knew Gjen would have the key and would move ahead to the platform if you didn’t do anything. Not just that, you’d still have to figure out a way to deal with Gjen and Glamr once you did manage to get to the platform and turn it around.

“So what do you say? Does that sound all right by you?”

Your plan had failed and the grey hand was looming closer with its grasp. You quickly called forth your Litwick. "Wisp! Use Haze now!"

The Liwick puffed his cheeks and blew a vast and cold mist that immediately obscured the space between you. You tore off your mask and threw it towards the hand, thne grabbed the Hex Maniac by the hand and sped off in the other direction. The grey hand lurched forward and took a hold of the discarded mask mid-air. Its fingers twitched as it sampled what it had taken, stopping dead in its tracks before the sight of it disappeared in the Haze while you distanced yourself. You explained your plan to your ally. Perhaps if he couldn’t foresee the location of the Watchers, he could still lead the way with his psychic vision, believing the channeling of his spirit may grant him vision on the field. The two of you threw yourselves past walls and ruins one by one as you inched deeper into the labyrinth to get away from your attacker, the Haze creeping up as it expanded amongst the corridors and tunnels.

Eventually, when the two of you believe you’ve gained enough distance, the Hex maniac stops to rest against a wall, allowing you to catch your breath as well. The Hex Maniac pants in between his breath, as he finally manages to try and talk again. “I… can’t,” he stopped to take in another lungful of air, “see what’s ahead. It’s not like…” he pants, “I have some sudden psychic vision of what’s to come.” It would seem this plan was going to fail as well. “But,” his mischievous grin returned, “…I do know the lay-out of this place somewhat, even if I can’t see the Watchers.” He clasps your hand and pulls his face uncomfortably close to yours again. “Come on, I know where we can go,” he pulls you further along. “I don’t think the Watchers use sight to track people, they’re more like sharks who can sense a presence, but the Haze. I can sense it obscuring the vision in this area, even if only slightly.” You were pulled around a corner where another grey hand loomed up ahead, inching closer ever so slowly. True to your command, Wisp expelled another blow of mist to veil your position. “This way,” the Hex maniac pulls you in a different direction.

The plan was working, if only slightly. The presence of the Watchers was growing as more and more seemed to crop up each time, but with Wisps’ Haze and your spiritual guide leading you, you wormed your way back and forth between the corroding walls and ruined temples, escaping their clutches by an inch of a hair each time. (Player is free to describe these details somewhat)

With your back against, a wall, the two of you had to stop for breath again. The Hex Maniac leaned his head around the bend to look up ahead and cursed under his breath. He whispered to you to use Haze again, and after doing so realized why. The spiritualist crept away from the corner back to you, and a dark looming figure floated past you gently. He placed a finger against his mouth to urge you to be quiet. The Watcher wasn’t more than a few feet away from you and good easily grab a hold of you if it wanted to. You were urged to back away slowly through the mist, when you were stopped once again. Up ahead in the other direction, another Watcher loomed as it neared you. You were trapped between the two it seemed. The Hex Maniac muttered a bit under his breath, then took you by the hand as he led you back the way you came from, in exactly the opposite direction you needed to go. You slowly snuck past for a while, then suddenly sped off around corners and bends, following your guide.

You came upon a church of some kind, a basilica more precise, ruined from top to bottom in a decaying fashion that looked like a feather’s touch might make it implode. You were urged to get inside as behind and to both your sides you saw multiple Watchers hovering gently above the ground and converging to your location. Inside the church, a tattered display of dust and light spilling on rotten wood and chipped cobblestone, the Hex Maniac led you to the basilica’s staircase that spiraled with a narrow corridor to the highest tower. The staits were as corroded as the rest of the land and you had to be careful about your steps to ensure you wouldn’t fall as loose pieces of stone crumbled away under your foot.

Once at the top, you find out why the Hex Maniac led you to this location. It was single-handedly one of the highest vantage points you could have of the area. There was a small balcony surrounding the top, granting you a bird’s eye-view of your surroundings in all directions. As far as you could tell, you were dead-centre in the labyrinth, having come half-way on your journey. The small troupe of Pokémon you saw before were close now than before, and not too far off in the direction you were heading; towards the citadels’ temple that supposedly held the key to your escape. But wherever you looked, you couldn’t see it yet. Below, you could easily make out passageways you could take, and the dense presence of the Watchers and their surveilling path, thickest at the borders of your basilica. Other churches, temples and synagogues sprouted from the ground in half-erect fashion, each carrying its own towers.

You had come halfway so far, and could use this break to plan the next leg of your journey. You have a view of the maze-like structure of the city, enough to remember one or two paths you could take to the other side, but not enough to be able to remember every passageway. There are also other buildings you can use to hide in or traverse towards somehow if you need. You also have a small sense of the paths the Watchers use in their surveillance, in case it helps. Enough to avoid most, but not all of them, and the many that surrounded your current building would not allow you to escape without being detected by at least one. Wisp can continue using Haze but he might run out of breath at one point, forcing you to come up with a second strategy in case it would be needed.

What's your plan?
His strategy seemed to be working, at least for now. Though Austin wasn't exactly comfortable with how close they were getting to the Watchers. Each time his little group barely managed to escape on of the flying death hands with the skin of their teeth. His breath also got worse, due to lack of hard exercise and the hazy air he was breathing in from Wisp. The Hex Maniac eventually managed to get them to a dilapidated basilica, though quickly urged him to get inside. The raven haired teen soon realized why, and saw multiple Watchers converging on the area. After the last encounter where one was inches away from him, he was more than willing to enter the safe haven.

He looked at the ruins before him, and saw a sense of transient beauty in them. Even as the building was decayed and dust-covered, it still held a sense of its former beauty. There was certainly something about this place that felt... familiar to him. Maybe it wasn't in particular this location, but this sense of overwhelming beauty and awe. He was snapped out of his little trance as his companion grabbed his hand, and led him up a stairwell. Austin was worried with each step the stairs would collapse under him, but they didn't. When they reached the top, he understood why. This was an amazing vantage point... He could see a lot more of the labyrinth than he could previously. From what he could see, this was a safe-haven in the center of the winding tunnels. Though there wasn't Ariadne's Thread to save him here. Even if there wasn't a Minotaur here... The Watchers proved to be a deadly enough threat that he was glad there wasn't one. He could see the Pokemon troupe he was seeking, and they seemed to have the same end location as him. Perhaps they were looking to leave this realm as well.

He took his time surveying the routines of the Watchers. They seemed to be on a set patrol path. The more he studied them, the more they looked like automata to him. Security Robots set up by whatever was here to... protect something. Most likely the artifact the Hex Maniac was talking about. While he knew he couldn't memorize all of their routes, he knew he could memorize the arguably safest route. At least, the safest from this position. He spent his time watching the hands, and then deducted the best way to go from the basilica.

"Right... Second Left... Third Right..." Austin began to spoke to the Hex Maniac and Wisp. "That's about as far as I can see for now, but that route looks to be the safest for now. I've watched them cycle through twice now, and I haven't seen any of those fucking hands go through those points. So... let's go."

Austin then motioned both Wisp and the Hex Maniac to follow him. He started to go down the stairs, repeating what he said in his mind. Right. Second Left. Third Right. Right. Second Left. Third Right. That looked to be the safest way for now, but why? Were the hands avoiding something lurking in the labyrinth? What would be there that would even scare them? Whatever it was, if he had to fight it to get out so be it.

You repeated the words over in your head, committing them to memory as you lead Wisp and the Hex Maniac down the stairs to the temple’s perimeter. With what you hoped to be the last time, you ordered another Haze to obscure the field. You step outside and witness a vast swarm of Watchers floating lazily past another, homing in closer on your location but not yet finding you. Even the Hex maniac’s eyes widen in shock at the sight as he chokes. Wisp blows the fog per instructions and the Haze obscures the field in a manner of seconds. The Watchers are slowly obscured by the prevailing mist but you detect that one or two noticed the move and were coming in your direction.

You quickly set into a sprint to avoid them, the Hex Maniac swearing under his breath that the plan wouldn’t work. You sped into the direction of one of the corridors and got close, when a large looming hand popped up all-of -sudden to your side. It was too late to try and get away.

“Lampent, Shadow Ball,” you hear your ally call out. You noticed a flash of light and a new shade emerging, unrecognizable through the dew. An attack was swiftly launched to strike the thick, grey hand. The Watcher stopped dead in its tracks and faded from existence. Another flash was made and the shade disappeared. The Hex Maniac grabbed you by the hand. “They know where we are now, let’s go! Lead the way.”

You led your companions down the chosen path. One. Two. To the left. The path ahead was long. To your back you noticed the Watchers following your general direction, though they appeared to have no direct sense of where you were. One. Two. Three. To the right. You made a beeline around the corner. You had been running for minutes now, and you felt you were close.

Almost there. The Hex maniac quickly grabs you by the hand and shoves you against a wall. Just in time as another Watcher drifted closely by. It disappeared around the bend and you set out to continue. You were at the crumbled city’s edge. You ran further, out of the city’s perimeter, gaping for breath, and then all of a sudden turn the last corner and bump into a tiny figure, causing you to fall flat on your back. The little white creature did the same, then looked up at you, and shivered in desperate shock.

“Sab-sableye!”

“Nuz-nuzleaf!”

You noticed the troupe of Pokémon a little further up as well, hiding amongst some broken rubble. They look at one another in puzzlement, then you, your Pokémon and your Hex Maniac ally. Getting up from the ground startled the troupe and most of them decided to sped off in the opposite direction away from you. The little white Pokémon with the green helmet tried to pick itself up and join its friends when it fell again, giving a rather nasty cough after.

“These must be the young souls who died in their previous life,” the Hex maniac explains with slight wonder. “You rarely see many of them in these lands.” He tries to explain to you a bit more: “When a body perishes, its soul is carried away for judgement, but those who have not yet lived a full life ready for judgement are sent to limbo; this place. It is here they must wait until they reach of age or commit a great accomplishment worthy of judgement…or a great deed of evil.”

“So?” the spiritualist asks. “What is it you want to do know? You wanted to find the Pokémon, here they are. We can quickly catch up with the others who ran if you’d want.” The little Ralts did nothing other than stare at you nervously with an occasional cough, visibly shaken up. “The citadel and artefact should be nearby, but that is in another direction from where they’re running. Strange though,” he ponders for a moment. “The citadel should be close by, I can even sense its great power. So why can’t we see it? We can’t risk you staying much longer here, we’d better go.”

“Fine. Show us. Human. She now. Afraid. You. Help her. Go through door. Find her. Make her. Safe.”

The voices remained quiet for a moment to let you gather your thoughts. It seemed they agreed to give you one more chance but you were going to have to prove it to them.

Eventually, when you decide to pass through the door, you feel the familiar numbing sensation as your senses were reduced to nothingness, before erupting back just as quickly. You were in the familiar scene of your bedroom. The one where you had recently met the Espurr for the first time, (before needing a break to throw up). The only difference this time is that your memories were not wiped, and you were not reverted to your childish body like last time.

The room was quiet, but was exactly how you remembered it. The faint words echo in your mind; ”Find her. Make her. Safe.”

But where is ’she’?


Where do you look, and how do plan to help (comfort) her?

Alice's tirade had been met with dead silence, which was quite honestly terrifying. These beings had the power to just trap her in this state for as long as they wanted, and she had no idea if anyone would even find she or Maasa's bodies - assuming they were even in the plane of Phantom Isle that living people normally walked. Alice's heartbeat was quick, heavy and audible in her own ears. She wished that she had Maasa and the rest of her Pokemon now. They made her feel courageous and safe almost anywhere, but it felt like this was being handled all alone. What if the journey ended here, and they were stuck fading away in their monster balls like that morbid comic she'd read once?

The painful silence finally drew to a close and the two voices bickered among themselves. At least one was on her side, although Alice doubted that she counted enough to make a majority. The whole thing ended in her favour, and Alice sounded out her surprise as an ugly but practical bag was dropped into her little hands. It wasn't too heavy, implying that her own inventory hadn't been restored. That was a concern. How much time had passed? Alice couldn't go a full day without topping up her medication. Things could start getting seriously dicey here.

"I will. I'll go and make her safe!" Her words were certain, and Alice took a few quick moments to open the bag and check through it. They were all items to help improve her odds in battle, which was damn necessary if the fight with the Meowstic was any indication. There were no other monster balls, meaning probably no Maasa and friends. "Okay, then. I'm off, wish me luck and I'll do my best!"

With that, Alice returned to the childhood room. At least this time she wasn't actually a child or wanting to upchuck all over the decor. Her mind reached back to the memories so far, and with caution, Alice planned to head towards the master and spare bedrooms. "Espurr?" Alice whispered, steps quiet but urgent, trying not to step on dodgy floorboards and listening for anyone or anything that might have been loitering about to harm them. Maybe the cat was under the bed, but if not, probably in the garden or the shed? Or kitchen? She'd retrace her steps from the flashbacks, try to coax the cat out with apologies and sweet words. There was no point pretending that part of this mess wasn't her fault. Going forward, Alice just had to let the Pokemon know she'd try anything to make things right for all of them.

Austin just watched the Pokemon for a moment. The way they ran, the way they acted. There were like kids, in a sense, lost and alone. It was refreshing to just pause and watch, to say the least, considering how he just traversed through that labyrinth. The Hex Maniac said that they were the souls of those deemed to young to be judged. Were they then the children who died during that fateful day? From where the Phantom Isles went from an amusement park to a land of horror and the dead. It would make sense, that they were stuck here then. Was that why he was here too? Because his life was deemed too insignificant to properly judge?

He heard the Ralts cough, and could sense it was scared of him. Did this cough come from life? That such a thing would persist through death? It was hard to tell. Though, it must've been a long time since the little troupe of Pokemon had human contact. True human contact, besides each other. Stuck in this land of gray, having to avoid hands and other dangers. They were remnants of an age long gone, with only the only thing attached to their memory is their death.

"Hey little guy, don't be afraid. I can help you catch up to your friends, if you want me to. I just wanted to know why you guys surrounded me when I was unconscious. Were you all perhaps worried about me? Worried that I would suffer the same fate? I don't really remember much about my early life, so I guess I would be stuck here with all of you. This guy here knows a way out, and I'm intending on taking it. If I could help you guys out too... I will. I know how important it is to not forget, and also to not be forgotten," Austin told the small Pokemon, bending down onto his knee while talking to it. He then got an idea, and grabbed Kai's Pokeball. He let out the Pachirisu, who at first freaked out before seeing the Ralts.

"This is Kai. While he is a bit of a scaredy cat, he's quite sweet and caring around others who feel the same way," the teen explained as the Pachirisu walked over and started to talk to the Ralts. With that done with, Austin turned to the Hex Maniac.

"Okay, let's go. We're close right? Lead the way."

There was still something about the train that was gnawing at your mind. That strange yellow creature had tried to quickly warn you the train wasn’t for you or the boy Austin. But then what was it’s purpose if the very conductors of the afterlife didn’t want it either? There was clearly something else at play here but none seemed to have any direct answers for you. You pushed back these thoughts for a moment when your coworkers responded.

Virgil chuckled. “Getting straight into it. Now that’s what I like to see.” He turned to the other two. “You best take a page from him, he’ll be a valuable asset for sure.” The other two undead merely rolled their three eyes at their boss’ comment. One directed his answer at you.

“The three tasks are rather easy. The steerer as you can guess-“

“Not now,” Virgil interrupted them. “The boy doesn’t even have his uniform yet. You can inform him later. First,” he looked back at you, “go to the lockers and pick up your uniform. There should be three available. Pick whatever suits you and meet up with them by the train. I still need to talk to these two.”

The other two undead merely nodded with sighed approval. “Meet us at the train, we’ll explain there.”

You were ushered to the changing room. Past the breakroom, where you were curiously ogled by some of the other undead, there was a small hallway leading up to a small space with neatly lined up lockers. None of the numbering seemed to make much sense but you could easily identify the three remaining ones you could use as they were the only ones not locked. One locker contained a uniform that was very tight and might restrict your movement. The second locker contained an outfit that was too big, and might cause you to trip from its bagginess. The third was just right, fitting you like a glove. Unfortunately the very same one reeked to high heavens as if, as you’d expect, it was previously worn by a corpse. After picking your uniform from the three available (in whatever locker number you want), you had to change clothes. In addition, the starter kit you were provided with contained nothing of much interest. A flashlight that didn’t require batteries for some reason, the Locker Key, an Energy Root and a Thick Club. Of these latter two you weren’t sure if they were supposed to be part of the starting kit or if they were left by the former owner.

Outside, the two zombies were waiting for you by the train. On your way, you'd have a chance to relay any task or order to the wisp if you wanted. The two were talking, something that seemed to trouble them, though they hushed up the moment you approached. “Well then, I suppose condolences are in order. First day here, and you’re working already. Mind you, despite what Virgil says, I don’t think working harder is going to make your due pass by an quicker.”

“Leave him be,” the other protested. “He probably has enough to worry about.”

“I didn’t mean anything by it,” he appeared apologetic, or as apologetic as an undead could. “So back to the matter at hand. The name’s Glamr. This here is Gjen.” Gjen merely raised a hand in salute. “Now as for the task at hand. It’s not really a three-person job. One could easily do it, but it certainly helps to have a few more with you. One person obviously needs to power the train and steer it correctly on the tracks. We need a second as a look-out. Being careful that there’s no one inside or that anyone enters, as well as clearing the tracks along the way or ushering the crowd apart. You probably saw the huge crowd inside, they sometimes end up on the tracks, though not often. The third can move ahead to the switchboard. Once we move the train, we need to get it on the right track. There’s a rotating platform up ahead that we use to steer the trains onto the tracks we want,” he was explaining the exact same thing the skeleton was doing, “we’ll be using that to move it to storage.”

“Is there really any point though,” Gjen spoke.

“Hush, it doesn’t matter. If Virgil commands it, we’d better get to it.” Glamr turns back to you. “I should explain what my partner meant, since you’re bound to be around for a long time anyhow. This train isn’t ours, as Virgil probably told you. It appears out of nowhere, and then it vanishes without a trace.”

“So then what’s the point? If it’s going to disappear again we might as well leave it and spare us the trouble. Not like we have anything else moving in or out anyhow.”

Glamr merely sighed at his partner and repeated the name carefully; “V-I-R-G-I-L.”

“Right.”

“Honestly kid, this is the real reason we want a third with us. None of trust this damn train. We don’t know where it comes from or where it goes, but there’s clearly something evil about it. I can feel it in my bones.”

“So he wants you here because he’s scared to be alone.”

“Hush now, why did you have to go and tell him THAT. Anyhow,” he turns back to the matter at hand. “Since this is your first time, we thought we’d give you the easy job. I’ll try to direct the train while Gjen here controls the platform.” Gjen waves again, showcasing the key in his hand as he did. “So that would leave you with the job of making sure the path is clear, and checking the train for any funny business. There might be a bit of running involved, hopping on and off the train, but we’ll be moving at a steady pace. There’s usually not that much trouble either, so it’s an easy job for your first time.”

The three jobs were briefly explained, and you were assigned the task of the one who wouldn’t control the platform. You knew Gjen would have the key and would move ahead to the platform if you didn’t do anything. Not just that, you’d still have to figure out a way to deal with Gjen and Glamr once you did manage to get to the platform and turn it around.

“So what do you say? Does that sound all right by you?”

What's your plan?

The gnawing confusion regarding the train pushed itself to the back of his somehow still conscious mind as Virgil appeared pleased at his eagerness to help out, which was expected. The more I can get this guy's trust, the easier this should be, Alex thought to himself as he was pointed towards the changing rooms and lockers while the stationmaster as it were proceeded to ignore his subordinates attempts to explain the roles, motioning them to meet him at the train, the human could note just how much influence the 'manservant of the afterlife' had in this station.

Heading for the rooms, he was also one to notice he appeared to be the centre of attention, and why not? Here he was, freshly deceased - Arceus, that one still felt surreal - amidst a complex of dour undead, an ocean of despondent souls and countless wisps of either innocent children or pokemon, many of which had been here since the fire those few decades ago. It would crush most, but at the same time he came to the theme park in search of answers to the fire itself, and stumbled into something of much greater concern. However, he was in these rooms for one reason: the lockers. One suit within was too tight, another too baggy, while the third seemed suspiciously perfect a fit, if a little on the rank side. Alex thankfully still had his bag with him, and as he grabbed the kit and went to change, opting to put his current clothing into his bag, he rifled through the kit's contents.

A flashlight without batteries that worked perfectly fine. Locker key #427. Some sort of shrivelled root. Most disturbing, a thick and hefty femur, which seemed to be the perfect fit for something like a Cubone or Marowak. "I guess this could be of use someday?" he mused, pocketing the objects as he changed.

A couple of moments later, Alex had changed into the uniform, as much as it made him shiver nervously. He had heard of stepping into a dead man's shoes, but not as literally as this. He paused, before ducking round the corner to the alcove, and to the wisp which had waited for him patiently, and began to bob a little as he approached. "Alright, we've got onto the crew. I doubt I'll get switchboard access, so I'm going to want to have an eye of sorts on the switchboard tower. You think you can circle the tower, just out of sight, and try and distract whoever's in there when the train's at the turntable, get them to make a mistake or something?"

He wasn't sure about this, but even without a physical form the wisp could bump an arm and force actions to further his own ploy. Nodding, Alex returned and headed for the two zombies from before, who seemed to be discussing something with some concerns. At his approach, one of them offered condolences towards him and the fact he was working, while the other was more supportive in the other direction, albeit at leaving Alex's troubles to himself. The pair introduced themselves as Glamr and Gjen, as he nodded and gave his own name to them, while looking over the famiiar sight of the carriages of the train that brought him to this forsaken land.

Glamr then proceeded to explain the roles. A steerer in the train, someone on switchboard, and a lookout whose job was to monitor the train, ensuring no trespassers got on board, as well as clearing the tracks if needed. The trainer nodded in acknowledgement, before Gjen became rather pessimistic, only for Glamr to retaliate with the mention of Virgil, and reconfirming the train as not being theirs, something Alex was aware of, before the zombie explained why they wanted a third set of eyes: neither trusted the train, and it felt evil to him.

And then, as expected, he was assigned the role of lookout, on the grounds that he was still new here. While the skeleton from before wanted him to grab the key, he had the feeling that would only cause trouble, possibly even invoking the wrath of Virgil. Gjen would be the one with the key, but in a way he wasn't bothered by this too much. No, the pair were gifting him one hell of an opportunity to check the train in greater detail. It brought him here from the realm of the living, and had the power to return him there, but between the countless masses of souls and apparent lack of outbound trains for paradise...

"Sure, I can run lookout, I guess. Not sure why there's much concern over Virgil though...sure, my first impressions of him were him shoving a hellhound in my face barking at me to get off this train here I came in on - alive, I should add - but I was still groggy..." he replied, putting hand to chin in thought. "I'm guessing he's always been in charge here, by...whatever put him in charge? Gimme a sec or two to suss things out with my guys, I'll say when we're good to go."

While waiting for their response, Alex fumbled for his belt, counting his pokemon and confirmed all were accounted for. Mjolnir and Paine were fine, if hurt, and while Tantalia had escaped the entry fee unscathed, what the unknown skeleton said meant that she'd only begin to decay on release, thus she had to be utilised with care. Thankfully, Alex had pokemon suited to this situation. After all, he'd have been a fool not to enter a place with a name like Phantom Isle without a phantom or two in tow...

The Ghost Ball in hand, he released the occupant into the midst of the underworld, knowing that it was perhaps a little hypocritical of him to possess a pokemon said to be a carrier of lost souls to the spirit world, but he didn't mind too much. The Dusknoir stretched her arms, before looking around at her surroundings, at the two zombies, and at Alex, before making an excellent attempt to stifle her grim laughter. "Lapis, serious time," he whispered harshly, "maybe for you being dead's a casual matter, but I'd prefer to keep my dignity. We've been tasked with ensuring the train remains clear of threats, yet at the same time I want to have a closer look through this train and to keep others off my back. Utilise your foresight to keep a bead on those guys over there as we head on, and around us, and if there's blockages on the tracks, persuade them off with some psychic force."

Alex's plan was to have tabs on Gjen, yet to have a closer look at the locomotive the brought him here, and the apparent evil within. He wasn't one for superstition, but if the pair were correct, then this train was more than what meets the eye. He was also aware that Virgil could pose problems, but if push came to shove, at least this time he was lucid and ready for a fight. This train...there's definitely something about it that it came to the isles for two living beings...as if it's somehow alive, and wants help it can't get from the dead...

The Park


Fortune Teller’s Tent
Meetan:
“Espurr?” you whispered. There was no sound.

You retraced your memories in your mind, going over the course of events that usually would have happened. You start with the master and spare bedrooms. The last time you saw the Espurr..it was cowering under a bed in her own memory. Perhaps for this reason you decided to look under the bed. It didn’t take very long. Exactly as you had though, in the dark crawlspace underneath one of the beds, you find the small cowering body of the little cat. She inches away from you the moment you lower yourself, visibly trembling out of fear. Her own memory had taken a toll on her psyche, who knows for how long.

You start with sweet words, attempting to coax the little Pokémon out, and apologise. It doesn’t seem to work at first but eventually the Pokémon realizes the place is safe. A small wave of curiosity washes over her as she inches closer to you, and immediately snuggles into you for comfort.

The next few moments are spent calming the Pokémon down. Hugs, games, stories, whatever you could think of. (Player is free to update this part on their own.)

Finally, when the Espurr is fully calmed down and warmed up to you, the familiar sensation washes over you of the memory shifting. The Espurr’s ears perk up as well, the same sensation having grabbed a hold of her. It felt friendly though, and soothing. The white blanketed your eyes once more.

"RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRNNGHGH!"

The scenery exploded back to you where you last saw it. The Espurr was back in your arms, the labyrinthian walls surrounding you on all sides.

"RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRNNGHGH!"

The Meowstic! Ahead of you, the blue figure of the Kalosian cat with the booming voice was approaching, closer than before. It would be only seconds until…

“Swine?”

A familiar sound grunted behind you. It was Masaru! You had your Pokémon with you finally. Well, one at least.

"RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRNNGHGH!"

The Meowstic was upon you. Unless you’d run, a battle was imminent.

“Esp?” the little cat looks at you curiously about what you were going to do next. You now had your trusted Masaru, a potential small ally in the form of an Espurr, your bag of received goodies, and whatever knowledge you had of the labyrinth from your memories.

What do you do?

1/4 memories cleared

(Clarification: There will be a battle, and perhaps more after. The goal is to get through them without having the Espurr knocked out or else your bond with her will be broken and your adventure for naught. The male Meowstic will be Lv.35 in this battle and the Espurr Lv.10. Battles have to be equal – 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, etc. You can use 3 moves a turn. Using an item counts as a move. You can use 2 items quickly before this battle begins.)


The Ghost Train
Fishyfool:
You take your time to check on your allies, summoning another ally as you did. Lapis the Dusknoir, a Pokémon who couldn’t help but recognize your predicament and had to stifle her laughter. You break off your Pokémon and explain the plan. Lapis was to keep an eye on the tracks and move any unwilling spirits out of the way with Psychic. You, on the other hand, would use your time to keep an eye on Glamr and look through the train.

By the time you returned, Gjen was just leaving. Glamr waves at you to join him. “Nice Dusknoir,” he remarks. “A clever ally to have with you down here. Very clever,” he eyes her wondrously. “The spirits will be very inclined to listen to her.”

“Anyway,” he breaks off, “we’ve wasted enough time. Let’s get this over with.” And with that said he entered the locomotive and set it into a low chug. “Are you coming?” You had to quickly recollect yourself to jump onto the crawling train but managed. The train entered the glass station with slow-churning movements. Almost immediately, a flock of ghosts approached the train and took up space near the track.

“Get off!” Glamr shouted at them unsuccessfully. “This train isn’t for you.”

“Kid!” he shouts back at you without even looking. “You’re up.” Little else had to be said. Lapis sprang into action. Upon nearing the crowd, a few ghosts hesitated and distanced themselves from the reaper. Lapis cajoled a few more to go with some shooing gestures but a few unruly spirits remained. Lapis resorted to her Psychi powers, enough to move them away every now and again when they got too close. Some tried to get their way close to the train, hoping to get on as if it were their salvation, but between you and your Dusknoir’s attempts, none succeeded. (Player is free to update this part as they see fit.)

You scour the train up and down, keeping an eye on Glamr as you did. The undead conductor seemed distracted by the crowd up front and the steering that he didn’t even pay an inkling of close attention to you. Beside the cramped locomotive, there was only one carriage left. Little else was there to be found her eother than some seating and the poles on which you had to hold on during your crazy ride. At the back a broken, frozen piece of chain-link was all that was found, the burnt-out carriage having dropped off into the abyss prior.

Finally, the train passed through the other side of the station. A vast empty land expanded in directions, their view blocked by a myriad of dizzying tracks and storage stations. Between you and the nearest split, a giant circle was drawn in the ground around a large segment of track. The train moved onto the circle and came to a creeping halt. To the side of this circle you noticed Gjen standing by an out-of-sorts metallic box on a pole. He turned the key and you felt the momentum hit you as the train rotated on the spinning platform. Close by, you recognized the wisp from earlier standing at the ready.

“We’re heading into that building over there,” Glamr shouted at you over the roaring machinery. As the plate rotated, you caught a view of the skeleton from earlier staring at you from the shade, waiting. The wisp descened down towards Glen as if in greeting.

“Hey little guy,” you can barely make out Gjen’s voice as he tries to usher the wisp away. The tracks were close to matching up when you suddenly hear Gjen giving a shout. ‘Pest’ or something or other. The tracks aligned, and then passed one another. Gjen had missed the cue to stop the rotating. The train was continuing its rotation.

“What’s going on out there?” Glamr erupts, obliviously ignoring you.

“One of the spirits,” Gjen sounded annoyed and you saw a hand near his belt, ready to call an ally if the wisp wasn’t going to stop.

This is your moment. The train missed its original mark and is still rotating. It will take a minute before it’s completely spun in your intended direction, but the key is going to have to be turned off at that moment if you want the tracks to align. Add to that, you still had Glamr and Gjen to contend with, neither of whom were aware of your intentions, though Gjen seemed ready to get aggressive with your allied wisp.

What do you?


Lil’twick:
You do your best to try to assuage the small Pokémon. The Ralts merely gazes nervously at you from his prostate position. You inquire as to why he and the other Pokémon took such an interest in you earlier, but the little Ralts merely gulps and fears to answer you in the slightest.

“Perhaps,” the Hex Maniac perks up, “they could tell you weren’t a mere spirit. That you didn’t belong here. They were probably curious about that.”

You ignore him though. “This guy here knows a way out, and I'm intending on taking it. If I could help you guys out too... I will.”

The Ralts merely exchanges glances between you and the Hex Maniac, apparently shaken up by such an idea and trembling a little more. You kneel down to get closer to him but that seems to have only upset him more, like a prey would when gazing into the jaws of a predator. You had an idea though.

You pull out one of your Pokéballs and call out Kai. A brief shine later and the form of a surprised Pachirisu takes form. Both Kai and the Ralts end up startled. The Pachirisu collects himself though on seeing the Ralts and goes over to talk.

"This is Kai,” you explain. “While he is a bit of a scaredy cat, he's quite sweet and caring around others who feel the same way."

“Pach-pach,” Kai talks to the Ralts.

“Ruru-ru?”

Kai communicates some more and at one point even points to you. The Ralts perks up a tad and the two small Pokémon commune a lot more. They seemed to be getting along quite well.

You get up. "Okay, let's go. We're close right? Lead the way."

The Hex Maniac is a bit surprised at your sudden decision. “Oh, uh, yes of course! It should be this way.” He leads the way, though to seemingly nowhere. Behind you, Kai gave chase to keep up with the Ralts beside him apparently following suit. Along the way they chittering to one another.



“I don’t understand,” the Hex maniac hushes annoyed. “I can clearly feel the energy coursing through this area. But there’s nothing here.” All around you, you saw, the crumbled buildings had given way to an expanse of wasteland. You had travelled for a long time through this empty space and had found yourself dead-centre in nowhere with nothing but grey grit and violet fog.

“Perhaps it’s a diversion. Perhaps-“ The Hex Maniac cut off as he retreated back in a flurry, bumping into you. A cackle of energy erupted in the air where he had collided. The energy coursed in every direction along a seemingly transparent fence. It zapped its way towards both horizons and towards the sky. Light reflected off of the transparent surface when it did and for a brief moment you recognize the shape of gigantic dome.

“Of course!” The Hex maniac erupts. “It’s been shrouded all this time. That’s why no one could find it!” No one? Was he not the only one looking for this? “This is the final trial,” he turns to you. “This barrier is meant to ward of spirits. Clever trick, no? Place the artefact in a place where only spirits may reside and then seal it off to only them. This is where you come in. Since I’m channeling, my spirit can’t pass the barrier.”

“You’re going to have to go in alone. But don’t worry.” He rubs himself closer to you, violating your sense of space once more. “The city is old and abandoned. There shouldn’t be any danger left. Just go in and grab the artefact. Look for a pedestal and a strange object that’s supposed to exude a strange power. You’ll recognize it when you get closer. Bring it back here, and I’ll use it to send you back.”

It seemed easy enough.

“One more thing though. As the barrier wards of spirits, Ghost-type Pokémon can’t enter.” Your eyes immediately fall onto Wisp. “You’re going to have to leave your Litwick here, as well as any other ghost-type Pokémon on you, or else the barrier won’t let you through.”

This is was the last hurdle. Go in, grab the artefact and return. Your goal was within sight, but you were going to have to leave some Pokémon behind.

House of Mirrors

You came to Phantom Isle to confirm the sightings of ghosts. You came to the House of Mirrors however to conquer your own fear of claustrophobia. So far though, that wasn’t going very well. Almost as soon as you entered the shadow-filled building you felt the pinprick of eyes drilling in the back of your neck. There was no constant source of light and instead you had to rely on the island’s glow spilling through the entrance and the occasional lightbulb that wasn’t completely shattered. The closed spaces made you nervous and the constant appearance of new reflections in the dark corridors didn’t help making you feel any less trapped.

You partner Pokémon senses your trouble and appears from his Pokéball, the Growlithe assuring you by acting as a therapy dog. A low moan echoes through the corridors briefly. Quite possibly the wind howling through the cracked wooden boards. You manage to recover yourself and move on, remembering a trick you were taught by your sister long ago. You think back to what she said that first time; the trick is to notice the edges of the mirrors. Specifically at the top and bottom you could easily see where the reflective surface met with the dirt coloured panels of the floors and ceiling.

You think hard about this trick, but the moment you do the loud moan echoes down the corridor once more. A violent wind blows past and in an instant the floor and ceiling were replaced by mirrors themselves. All around where you looked you and your Growlithe were surrounded by images of yourselves. The two of you are momentarily shocked by the sudden change in scenery. Was this supposed to be a part of the attraction?

“Hello?” a voice startles you. You look around but find nothing. Your Growlithe looks at you, puzzled.

“Is someone there?” the voice speaks again. You turn again to find nothing. You couldn’t tell where it was coming from; the voice appeared to be coming from all directions at once.

“Hello?” it asks again.

You concentrate on the path ahead first, for a small piece of mind you had to make yourself comfortable first. You think about the corners of the mirror panels themselves. Perhaps they could still provide you with some comfort and bearing.

Another loud moan bellows in the corridor, and another gust of wind blows past you. The corridor trembles in its place, and before your very eyes the corners of the mirror panels squeaked as they bent into soft corners, obscuring their sharp angles. Your Growlithe was sufficiently startled, by both the sound and the warp of the mirrors.

“Is someone there? You need to put a halt to your overtly pensive thoughts.”

The loud moan turned louder and became closer. A dark shadow filled the corridor up ahead and crawled towards you. One by one, the mirrored panels rippled like waves as the shadow approached your direction. A whistling chime blows past you along another howl of wind.

“Answer please, I beg you” the voice speaks. It is then that you realise the voice wasn’t coming from anywhere in the building; it was in your head. “I’m trying to warn you that you’re in danger.” The shadow slowly crept closer as the mirrors continued to ripple by its touch.

“Run!”

What do you do?

Drake bristled, the hair standing up on the back of his neck, He chose not to answer the voice just yet, because he didn't know if it was a ghost or a trick. However He ran anyways, the voice startled Drake, and had sounded so close.

"Where are we going?" "Why are we running Drake?" Wolfe said, unable to understand why Drake was running, Wolfe didn't hear the voices haunting his Trainer just yet.

Running hard and hardly paying attention to the path, Drake suddenly tripped and fell over, He drew himself up and turned to look behind him. Wolfe then heard the next moan, and bristled too.

"What should we do Wolfe?" Drake turned to his Growlithe with fear in his eyes and the stench of fear was rolling off Drake in waves to Wolfe's nose.

" I don't know, what do you think we should do?"
Wolfe tried to comfort his owner by rubbing his head against his masters, the brown sable fur looking black in the lighting and the green streak glowing over his left eye.

The pokemon and trainer both looked to the path from where they came, feeling the wind and hearing the moan.

"I say we continue running, its not like this place can go on forever."
the growlithe said.

"I agree." Drake wanted nothing more than to get out of this tight hallway and continue on. He thought for sure that these places had a couple floors, and he hoped they didn't have this tight enclosure feeling.

With that, Drake got up and ran, Wolfe right behind him, both taking left and right turns.

Drake also remembered that mazes, if you were to keep to the left side, you were more likely to get out.

Alice was relieved that she had found the Espurr so quickly, although whether the Pokemon had any trust in her remained to be seen. She couldn't blame it for that. The Pokemon did eventually come out, though, and her heart swelled as the feline cuddled up to her. "Hey, it's okay," The young woman cooed, brushing her hand soothingly through Espurr's fur, giving the creature little ruffles and scritches. She eventually shifted how they were sat, cuddling and talking in a honeyed voice, providing reassurances and distractions with little songs and dances and small games. Alice was aware that they couldn't make too much of a racket, though. If something like the Meowstic was searching for them, she couldn't afford to draw in that unwanted attention.

She had little sense of how much time had passed. Although there was a digital clock on one of the nightstands, reality was bendable and Alice wasn't sure that it was truly reality at all. Sure enough, when the tension between them seemed to have fully dissipated, the scenery had faded away and into something else. It wasn't a totally unpleasant feeling, until the roar of that monster-cat echoed through the maze. It wasn't from far away, either. They were resuming their hell.

"Aw, shit." The blonde cursed under her breath, stomach churning. Could the items those voices had given her really boost Espurr enough to take this thing? Alice didn't know, but maybe she wouldn't need to find out. Masaru's voice made her jump, the piggy moving to get in front of her, determination in its stance. The Espurr looked up at her and Alice managed a confident smile in return, getting to her feet with the bag over her shoulders.

"Okay, Maasa. We're gonna take this thing. Use odor sleuth and toxic, then get in there with a bite attack!" Alice commanded. Her Pokemon put his sensitive nostrils to good use, trying to boost his aim before spitting vile sludge in the enemy's direction.

"RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRNNGHGH!" The Meowstic’s sight switched from you and the Espurr down to the small and brave Swinub.

A small white orb glows at the piglet’s nostrils as it squeaks. The Swinub sniffs the ground before the orb and white energy are hurled into the ground. A thin trail of mist journeys its way towards the Meowstick, Sleuthing its Odour and position and setting the Ice type's target.

“Meeeeoow,” the Meowstic sneers sinisterly but merely stands idly in wait. Masaru takes his chance and gets ready for his next attack; a Toxic. Purple energy starts oozing out his mouth as he widens his jaws. The cat gives a sly grin as he calmly observes, and then swiftly lunges forward and claps the Swinub’s nose between its paws. Masaru instantly chokes on his own attack and, flinched from the move, foregoes the Toxic. A Fake Out!

“Me-e-oww,” the cat chuckles greedily. He takes a defensie stance and opts to wait for Masaru’s attack instead. The Swinub follows the last of your orders and charges closer in for a Bite. Immediately, the Mewostic flicks his hands up, palms facing forward. Masaru doesn’t notice anything at first but the moment he gets close he notices a sudden drop in momentum and slowness of attack as a transparent pane shimmers when he sinks his teeth into the opponent; a Reflect. The attack lands but the Meowstic merely scoffs and throws Masaru off. The pig Pokémon lands with a cloud of dust into the ruins’ floor. The Meowstic hesitates little this time as he immediately goes in for the attack. His eyes light up a dark purple haze before two multicoloured Beams of Psychic energy strike the side of the fallen Swinub.

The Meowstic laughs for a moment but holds back as Masaru gets up, seemingly waiting for Masaru’s next move instead. Rather than a direct attacker, this opponent seemed to enjoy disrupting yours at the last moment, and he was surprisingly quick at doing so. Masaru had the experience advantage by far, but the cat’s tricks had managed to balance the fields a lot more.

You ran straight into the opposite direction, taking left and right turns alternatively when you could. The rippling waves of the mirror gave chase to you as the reflective surfaces bent their angles into a single tunnel, the shadow close behind. You rushed headlong in. A mistake, you discover, as your panic caused you to collide with the mirrored walls at least once. And then you remembered a trick in mazes; all you had to do was follow one side of a maze for as long as you could, and you’d be sure to find the exit. Eventually. As best a plan you could muster up in such a short time considering you had lost your way and weren’t sure of the exit.

The shadow and rippling mirrors were slow in their advance and so you quickly managed to gain some distance. Using this distance you were able to give yourself some pause to gain your bearings and find the mirrored walls and their edges. You turn a corner at a split, and then another left, and then, was that a split you passed? Probably not, but you couldn’t be sure anymore, and there was no time to retrace your steps. The shadow was closing in again. You take another left, and then, dead end!

Your breath stops dead-mid your throat. You turn, anxiously waiting for the shadow to gang up…it took a few seconds. For some reason, you poked your head around the corner. You saw the mirrors rippling at the end of the corridor. The tunnel got darker, the shadow was at the opposite side. It wasn’t a shadow, it was something else. But through the dim light and reflections it was hard to tell what it was

And then it went down another path. The rippling of the mirrors slowly cease as they lag behind the creature. The moaning that had accompanied it came to a dwindling halt as well, and for a moment you felt safe.

“You can’t stay there, the voice from before speaks in your mind.

”First off, don’t think too much. It can sense thoughts just like I can.” Easier said then done.

”That thing will go down every path and around every corridor until it finds something. And if it doesn’t, it will do it all over until it finally does. It’s going to keep looking for you as long as you’re here. You need to get out.

There was a small pause from the voice.

”You need to go back to where you were, back where you first saw it.” Give it a moment first. There’s a split later on where you and that thing might cross again. Wait two minutes and thirty-three seconds and then go. Was he serious? Go back into the lion’s den?

”That thing won’t return there for a while,” the voice spoke as if knowing your thoughts. ”But you have to stop overthinking,” it repeats itself.

’Look, I know the way out. I can see every inch of this place. I can get you out of here, but you need to be careful, or you might get trapped here like me. It’s your choice.”

You were trapped in a dead corner with some shadow patrolling the Hall of Mirrors. The mysterious voice remained enigmatic to you but at least it was offering help. If you could trust it that was. According to it, you had a short break before you’d have to continue… straight into the lion’s den. Perhaps you could use this time to prepare, or ask questions, or panic.

What do you do?
Everything seemed to be going smoothly until the Fake Out struck, and Alice was just relieved that Maasa hadn't poisoned himself by mistake. That would've been a fucking nightmare. She grit her teeth. This Meowstic had a clear advantage, but she had a thought of how they might be able to even the field. It was outside the box, but this whole situation was, wasn't it? "Espurr, if you don't believe that we can win this, we won't." She told the smaller feline, "These are your memories, too. The stronger you think it is, the stronger it'll be. Masaru and I can take them, okay? Stop worrying about them and start cheering us on, and we'll get this over with faster. Right, Masaru?"

"Swine!" The Pokemon shook off the attacks that the mocking Meowstic had dealt it. He was still calm, a lot calmer than he could tell his human was feeling at this moment, but not recklessly disregarding his opponent, either. Maasa was a quiet but mischievous piggy himself, and they both had the experience to surprise the Meowstic if they put their minds to it. Still, neither of them had thought they would on the back foot this early. Overconfidence could be a bitch and now they were checking themselves so they didn't wreck themselves all over again.

"Two can play this game. Use amnesia and ice barrier, then use mud bomb!" Alice ordered. Her Pokemon put himself into a short, meditative state to try and shed his concerns and focus on the moment, and then began to conjure his barrier and attack. If the Meoswtic was going to be so tricky, an all out offensive wasn't wise, especially not with how much was riding on this fight and no other allies aside from the weaker Espurr to back them up.

You take your time to check on your allies, summoning another ally as you did. Lapis the Dusknoir, a Pokémon who couldn’t help but recognize your predicament and had to stifle her laughter. You break off your Pokémon and explain the plan. Lapis was to keep an eye on the tracks and move any unwilling spirits out of the way with Psychic. You, on the other hand, would use your time to keep an eye on Glamr and look through the train.

By the time you returned, Gjen was just leaving. Glamr waves at you to join him. “Nice Dusknoir,” he remarks. “A clever ally to have with you down here. Very clever,” he eyes her wondrously. “The spirits will be very inclined to listen to her.”

“Anyway,” he breaks off, “we’ve wasted enough time. Let’s get this over with.” And with that said he entered the locomotive and set it into a low chug. “Are you coming?” You had to quickly recollect yourself to jump onto the crawling train but managed. The train entered the glass station with slow-churning movements. Almost immediately, a flock of ghosts approached the train and took up space near the track.

“Get off!” Glamr shouted at them unsuccessfully. “This train isn’t for you.”

“Kid!” he shouts back at you without even looking. “You’re up.” Little else had to be said. Lapis sprang into action. Upon nearing the crowd, a few ghosts hesitated and distanced themselves from the reaper. Lapis cajoled a few more to go with some shooing gestures but a few unruly spirits remained. Lapis resorted to her Psychi powers, enough to move them away every now and again when they got too close. Some tried to get their way close to the train, hoping to get on as if it were their salvation, but between you and your Dusknoir’s attempts, none succeeded. (Player is free to update this part as they see fit.)

You scour the train up and down, keeping an eye on Glamr as you did. The undead conductor seemed distracted by the crowd up front and the steering that he didn’t even pay an inkling of close attention to you. Beside the cramped locomotive, there was only one carriage left. Little else was there to be found her eother than some seating and the poles on which you had to hold on during your crazy ride. At the back a broken, frozen piece of chain-link was all that was found, the burnt-out carriage having dropped off into the abyss prior.

Finally, the train passed through the other side of the station. A vast empty land expanded in directions, their view blocked by a myriad of dizzying tracks and storage stations. Between you and the nearest split, a giant circle was drawn in the ground around a large segment of track. The train moved onto the circle and came to a creeping halt. To the side of this circle you noticed Gjen standing by an out-of-sorts metallic box on a pole. He turned the key and you felt the momentum hit you as the train rotated on the spinning platform. Close by, you recognized the wisp from earlier standing at the ready.

“We’re heading into that building over there,” Glamr shouted at you over the roaring machinery. As the plate rotated, you caught a view of the skeleton from earlier staring at you from the shade, waiting. The wisp descened down towards Glen as if in greeting.

“Hey little guy,” you can barely make out Gjen’s voice as he tries to usher the wisp away. The tracks were close to matching up when you suddenly hear Gjen giving a shout. ‘Pest’ or something or other. The tracks aligned, and then passed one another. Gjen had missed the cue to stop the rotating. The train was continuing its rotation.

“What’s going on out there?” Glamr erupts, obliviously ignoring you.

“One of the spirits,” Gjen sounded annoyed and you saw a hand near his belt, ready to call an ally if the wisp wasn’t going to stop.

This is your moment. The train missed its original mark and is still rotating. It will take a minute before it’s completely spun in your intended direction, but the key is going to have to be turned off at that moment if you want the tracks to align. Add to that, you still had Glamr and Gjen to contend with, neither of whom were aware of your intentions, though Gjen seemed ready to get aggressive with your allied wisp.

What do you?

With his plan relayed to Lapis, Alex returned to Glamr as Gjen headed off for the switchboard, and wasn't too surprised at the zombie's reaction to the clever decision to bring the Dusknoir. "Well, given the species apparent inclination to bring lost spirits to here, it made some sense," he replied with a half-hearted shrug and a slight grin, which was about as much as his dead heart could muster. Breaking off, the driver hopped aboard the mysterious locomotive and commandeered the machine, Alex only collecting himself and clambering aboard before it picked up steam. "Lapis, remember the plan!" he called to the phantom as she drifted behind them. Entering the station, the reaction was instantaneous. At the sight of the train, the sea of broken souls seemingly lit up, like a buffet cart brought before a Snorlax, and immediately crowded around the train as Glamr tried unsuccessfully to make them move.

"You're up!" he called, as Alex nodded to his ghost pokemon. Without breaking a sweat, the Dusknoir floated over to the train and fixated her gaze upon the spirits, numerous of them quickly backing off at the mere sight of the Gripper pokemon. With a gentle wave of her hands, other spirits left the track, while the few more desperate ones found themselves enveloped in a cyan glow and hoisted back into the ocean gently. Alex could only gaze upon the crowds with an air of regret. How long have half these guys been here? One or two of the spirits pushed for the train in desperation, as though the locomotive was their salvation, only to be thwarted by the stout form of Lapis, and the very feeling Alex was getting at this denial of movement was quite painful. Desperation. Despair. Longingness.

And he felt so selfish. Here he was, fresh into hell, and with a golden ticket back to the world of the living practically within reach, while some of these lost souls had to have been here for decades...speaking of tickets, Alex turned to Glamr who was too busy distracted by his role, before giving the train a decent look around now he was in no danger of immolation, but was disappointed to find nothing out of the ordinary. Nope, just a train capable of travelling between the abyss of life and death, owned by nobody...

The repulsion of spirits successful, Lapis rejoined Alex as the train left the station and trundled towards a vast circle and great number of pens in the middle of nowhere. He felt her hand on his shoulder, and nodded. As a pokemon known to shepherd the fallen to their final resting place, it physically hurt Lapis to witness such a vast number of souls trapped in limbo. The pair were broken out of their forlorn stance on sight of Gjen, however, standing by a metallic box, the switchboard by the looks of things. The zombie turned the key, and the stationary train lurched as the ancient machinery beneath whirled the turntable around slowly. Alex could faintly hear Glamr's voice and as he followed the worker's limb he could see a storehouse, as well as the skeleton waiting for him.

It was then that Lapis nudged Alex, and he peered over shoulder to find the wisp interacting with Gjen. It was fleeting, but the distraction was enough as the zombie missed his cue to stop the turntable, to Glamr's annoyance. However, things escalated quickly. Ignoring him, Gjen's hand reached for his belt, ready to call in an ally of sorts, while Glamr conveniently ignored him. If there was ever a time for action, it was now. While they were a little bit away from their position, the wisp was in trouble, and Alex was skeptical if there was an afterlife for the afterlife. With a sigh, he found himself at odds.

Obviously there was the clear signs of danger, and he had made plans with the skeleton, yet as he opened his mouth he felt Lapis place her hand on his shoulder, the Dusknoir gazing at the skeleton, then towards Glamr and Gjen, then the station. At the look at the station, he felt her grip tighten, and realised what that meant: she was not at all amused. "You too, Lapis?" he whispered to her, and the phantom nodded. The skeleton's golden ticket could be redeemed in a while, there was much bigger fish to fry, and something more appropriate to deal with right now, and that step was to stop the wisp from coming to harm. "Lapis, intercept the situation and bind that zombie before he hurts that wisp, then stall for time by sending a confuse ray towards the driver. If they get something out, seal whatever skills you may share with imprison, but the key is to not bring anyone to harm just yet."

A hum of "dusk" later, the reaper began to carry out Alex's orders as he frowned and chided himself, having realised that this train really wasn't for him per se, but for everyone. This station was greatly overcongested, and there was one figure in the scenario who seemed to be pulling strings, and that was Virgil. His plans as such were to incapacitate the two zombies, then to find a way to confront the conductor and to sort this mess out for the sake of all the despondent souls. He could wait, decomposition usually didn't get properly started until a few days anyways.

And then didn’t any more. He looks around a little at a loss of what he was doing whilst oblivious to the pain he had received earlier.

“Meow.” With a sly grin the Meowstic takes advantage and launches a psychic strike. His eyes swell up with dark blue energy before firing in a zap of energy to Psyshock the poor swine, bypassing his Sp.Defense increase. Masaru gives a whelp out of pain and seems slightly confused at what was going. You had to relay your orders once again as Masaru appeared to have forgotten them in his Amnesia.

He gets back into action though and fires a few pelts of ice and snow to envelop himself. The Ice Barrier stood at the ready just as the Mewostic took a stance, a glint in his eye revealing he was analyzing the situation for himself. He fires a quick Confusion attack that strikes the icy shield. The barrier evaporates into nothing and the Meowstic managed to avoid physical contact, rendering both attacks obsolete and providing no gains to the battle on either side.

Masaru starts focusing on his last attack, a physical projectile with special properties (for some reason). The cat Pokémon raises his left paw just as he did in the last round. The Mud Bomb is forcefully hurled towards the intended target, the prior Odor Sleuth just managing to ensure it would strike the opponent, when a magical barrier raises itself and slows the projectile down before impact. Light Screen, the other psychic barrier, and one the Meowstic was fantastically quick at setting up in such a short time. The prankster.

As clever as your plan was to raise your Sp.Defense and issue protection from physical attacks, the male Meowstic had another trick up his sleeve that bypassed your strategy. He had enough of the current battle status and felt it was time to go on the offensive. This time around, the Meowstic wasn’t planning on staying defensive and, instead, had his eyes glow a dark hazy blue as he prepared his own attack for the next round.

The Ghost Train

While standing in the opening of the train carriage, you called on your partner Lapis to issue an assault. The Dusknoir gave a nod of understanding as she descended down swiftly and floated up a tad closer to Gjen who was trying to shoo the wisp away with one hand whilst fumbling his other on his belt in search of his Pokéball. Whereas most Pokémon relied on their physical bodies to restrain their opponent with Bind, the Dusknoir had the advantage of being a Ghost type and relied on other methods. She circled her opponent slightly, using a wide arc for distance, until she stood in view of Gjen. With some understanding, the wisp backed off, allowing Gjen’s confusion on the matter to survey his surroundings on what was going on. Lapis took advantage and as soon as the two locked gaze she emitted a bright flash of energy from her eye. Gjen barely managed to exclaim his ire before his body froze up in place, only his eye managing to dance around in his still socket.

“What the-!” Glamr immediately turned to you, having witnessed what happened to Gjen ad stared you down fixedly. “I don’t know what you’re up to, but that was a mistake,” he informed you assuredly. “Houndour, attack,” he called out as he tossed a Pokéball from his belt. The doom hound burst from his Pokéball. At the same time, another bright flash erupted from behind Glamr as Lapis threw her Confuse Ray. Alas, with Glamr having looked away and towards you, the lack of direct view meant he had escaped her attempt at confusing him. The Houdnour instantly leapt onto you, and having stood so close to the carriage opening, threw both of you off. You land somewhat painfully on the rotating platform amongst some scattered grit with the Dark Pokémon taking the advantage and standing atop of you, paws digging in your ribs and mouth snarling close to your face in case you tried anything.

Wihtout being able to see the move yourself, an ominous screech impacts you and the Houndour. The screech strikes the Dark type and dwindles whereupon a strange mist enveloped the Houndour for a brief moment before receding. The Houndour sniffs the air while keeping a single paw on your chest and snarls in the direction of the Dusknoir who had just circled in the opposite direction of the rotating train to come find you and issued an Imprison unbeknownst to the Pokémon. The Houndour blew a single smolder of fire at the reaper, unable to do very much else from afar it seemed, but the Ember struck true and burnt the Gripper Pokémon enough for a little damage.

Glamr’s silhouette appears in the train door as he looks out and swiftly jumps out of the rotating train. He looks at you and the Houndour, then at the Dusknoir and the roating train. His hand goes for his chest and then carries itself to his mouth.

“FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTT” He blew the whistle hard. “TROUBLE!!!” he shouted out with whatever vocal chords he had left. He blew the whistle again as the sound travelled farther. He was summoning help!

Gjen’s bound to a statuesque state, right now on the other side of the train where the switchboard lay. You’re pinned down on the rotating platform by a Houndour with Glamr whistling for help. Lapis stood on the border of the rotating platform, ready to jump in. Who knows where the wisp is currently, but the tracks are about to align! If you wanted the platform to stop soon you were going to have to do it NOW.

The Ghost Train

While standing in the opening of the train carriage, you called on your partner Lapis to issue an assault. The Dusknoir gave a nod of understanding as she descended down swiftly and floated up a tad closer to Gjen who was trying to shoo the wisp away with one hand whilst fumbling his other on his belt in search of his Pokéball. Whereas most Pokémon relied on their physical bodies to restrain their opponent with Bind, the Dusknoir had the advantage of being a Ghost type and relied on other methods. She circled her opponent slightly, using a wide arc for distance, until she stood in view of Gjen. With some understanding, the wisp backed off, allowing Gjen’s confusion on the matter to survey his surroundings on what was going on. Lapis took advantage and as soon as the two locked gaze she emitted a bright flash of energy from her eye. Gjen barely managed to exclaim his ire before his body froze up in place, only his eye managing to dance around in his still socket.

“What the-!” Glamr immediately turned to you, having witnessed what happened to Gjen ad stared you down fixedly. “I don’t know what you’re up to, but that was a mistake,” he informed you assuredly. “Houndour, attack,” he called out as he tossed a Pokéball from his belt. The doom hound burst from his Pokéball. At the same time, another bright flash erupted from behind Glamr as Lapis threw her Confuse Ray. Alas, with Glamr having looked away and towards you, the lack of direct view meant he had escaped her attempt at confusing him. The Houdnour instantly leapt onto you, and having stood so close to the carriage opening, threw both of you off. You land somewhat painfully on the rotating platform amongst some scattered grit with the Dark Pokémon taking the advantage and standing atop of you, paws digging in your ribs and mouth snarling close to your face in case you tried anything.

Wihtout being able to see the move yourself, an ominous screech impacts you and the Houndour. The screech strikes the Dark type and dwindles whereupon a strange mist enveloped the Houndour for a brief moment before receding. The Houndour sniffs the air while keeping a single paw on your chest and snarls in the direction of the Dusknoir who had just circled in the opposite direction of the rotating train to come find you and issued an Imprison unbeknownst to the Pokémon. The Houndour blew a single smolder of fire at the reaper, unable to do very much else from afar it seemed, but the Ember struck true and burnt the Gripper Pokémon enough for a little damage.

Glamr’s silhouette appears in the train door as he looks out and swiftly jumps out of the rotating train. He looks at you and the Houndour, then at the Dusknoir and the roating train. His hand goes for his chest and then carries itself to his mouth.

“FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTT” He blew the whistle hard. “TROUBLE!!!” he shouted out with whatever vocal chords he had left. He blew the whistle again as the sound travelled farther. He was summoning help!

Gjen’s bound to a statuesque state, right now on the other side of the train where the switchboard lay. You’re pinned down on the rotating platform by a Houndour with Glamr whistling for help. Lapis stood on the border of the rotating platform, ready to jump in. Who knows where the wisp is currently, but the tracks are about to align! If you wanted the platform to stop soon you were going to have to do it NOW.

What do you do?

Things seemed to be going well, with the group having reached the turntable, but with the wisp now in trouble, Alex's hand was effectively forced. Giving a nod, the Dusknoir drifted to Gjen and the wisp, watching and waiting for the opportune moment. Most pokemon with the technique to bind their foes usually relied on vines or body to do so, but the Dusknoir was different. As soon as she reached the pair, Lapis beckoned the wisp away, to which it obliged as the zombie appeared puzzled, before turning towards the phantom. The Dusknoir's eye flashed, and as Gjen gave a sudden cry, the fellow found himself bound by otherworldly forces, frozen in place. This of course caught the attention of Glamr, as Alex expected.

What he hadn't expected was for how quickly the driver responded. With some assurance that Alex had made a mistake, the undead lobbed forth an orb and revealed a Houndour, the canine growling. Worse, Lapis's confuse ray had missed its mark due to Glamr not keeping eye contact, throwing a spanner in the works. As he stood at the entrance to the carriage, he was powerless to stop the charging canine as it knocked him off the carriage and onto the platform. "Ack!" he cried as pain surged through him, and the hellhound standing atop him pushing its paw into his ribs, as though they weren't damaged enough, snarling into his face as the human was pinned down. Lapis was on the draw however and released an odd screech into the air that caught the canine's attention, mist swirling around the Houndour sealing what knowledge the pair shared. Spitting a burst of fire at her, the pokemon holding Alex down reacted to the threat, who took the brunt of the flame with an air of annoyance rather than injury, brushing off the slight char on her corporeal form.

Glamr then reappeared at the front of the locomotive, and saw for himself what madness ensued. Leaping off the train, he reached for his chest before bringing something to his mouth. "Ugh..." Alex groaned as the shrill whistle rang out as the driver called for help. While he was pinned down by the chest, he wasn't completely helpless and Lapis was ready to move into combat, yet the tracks were nearly lined up. Alex looked at the Dusknoir, then towards the switchboard, making the intention clear to her: stop the turntable. Giving a grim nod, the Dusknoir readied to move, but at the same time was readying another trick up her sleeve by hindering the Houndour further with a quick disable. Once the turntable had stopped, she'd leer at the hound then move in and slug it with a thunder punch. Alex on the other hand was preparing to get physical, yet despite the weight upon him, it wasn't anything too heavy. Tilting his head towards Glamr, he gritted his teeth before calling out to him.

"Nothing personal, but this train brought me here from the world of the living, and something's telling me it's the key to solving this place's problems! Gonna have to ask you guys to hold off for now!" With that said, Alex turned to the canine holding him down and readied himself to grapple with the fire type and hurl it off of him. Ballsy, to be sure, but that paw on the chest was not helping things in the slightest. And if it decided to sink its teeth into him? He'd respond by shoving his fingers into its eyes, the classic 'let go of me you bounder' tactic. Desperate times called for desperate measures, and what was the skeleton doing anyways? Where had the wisp disappeared to? He could do with a hand in subduing Glamr...

"Two can play this game. Use amnesia and ice barrier, then use mud bomb!" Masaru gave a sound of understanding, concentrating his mind on the task at hand.

And then didn’t any more. He looks around a little at a loss of what he was doing whilst oblivious to the pain he had received earlier.

“Meow.” With a sly grin the Meowstic takes advantage and launches a psychic strike. His eyes swell up with dark blue energy before firing in a zap of energy to Psyshock the poor swine, bypassing his Sp.Defense increase. Masaru gives a whelp out of pain and seems slightly confused at what was going. You had to relay your orders once again as Masaru appeared to have forgotten them in his Amnesia.

He gets back into action though and fires a few pelts of ice and snow to envelop himself. The Ice Barrier stood at the ready just as the Mewostic took a stance, a glint in his eye revealing he was analyzing the situation for himself. He fires a quick Confusion attack that strikes the icy shield. The barrier evaporates into nothing and the Meowstic managed to avoid physical contact, rendering both attacks obsolete and providing no gains to the battle on either side.

Masaru starts focusing on his last attack, a physical projectile with special properties (for some reason). The cat Pokémon raises his left paw just as he did in the last round. The Mud Bomb is forcefully hurled towards the intended target, the prior Odor Sleuth just managing to ensure it would strike the opponent, when a magical barrier raises itself and slows the projectile down before impact. Light Screen, the other psychic barrier, and one the Meowstic was fantastically quick at setting up in such a short time. The prankster.

As clever as your plan was to raise your Sp.Defense and issue protection from physical attacks, the male Meowstic had another trick up his sleeve that bypassed your strategy. He had enough of the current battle status and felt it was time to go on the offensive. This time around, the Meowstic wasn’t planning on staying defensive and, instead, had his eyes glow a dark hazy blue as he prepared his own attack for the next round.

"This Meowstic's way too powerful considering..." Alice murmured to herself, thoroughly unhappy with the situation. As one could expect, even though she considered herself a fairly new trainer, she was used to Pokemon like Maasa crushing their competition. It seemed that the power they should have had on the Meowstic didn't matter, however, and the barrier did nothing more than maintain the status quo for them. Psychic opponents were always tricky, and always put Alice on extra guard. In this case, though, the spectral was at play, and it seemed to bring them to a far more equal - or unequal? - footing. This wasn't a normal enemy, and it was definitely smarter than average. Darn.

Noticing an apparent intention to go on the offensive, Alice decided to change tack, too. She wondered if she could just decimate the enemy in a fell swoop. Maasa's Nevermeltice would help here, for sure. "Maasa, use Freeze Dry, then Odor Sleuth and Fissure! I want it out of our hair, now!" The trainer insisted with force in her voice.

The Swinub grunted an affirmative, and focused on trying to rapidly cool the target with a slew of ice. Alice could feel the temperature of the area drop, causing her to shiver in her short sleeves. Alice preferred the cold, but this was heavy. Even as he did this, her partner was putting his nose to good to use, hoping that even if this form of attack didn't work as well as intended that he could keep a focus on the target and drop it in a severe fissure. No barrier could protect from that, right? That was the hope, at least.

The Meowstic was a crafty one and in so far, your subtle tactics haven’t proven to be useful in gaining the upper hand. Noticing the psychic cat switching tactics himself, you opt to follow suit. Toxic and Amnesia were good attempts at getting an advantage for the rest of the battle, but an all-out offensive was going to be needed at some point to dwindle the opponent’s health. The Meowstic’s attack strikes Masaru’s side, pushing him back a few steps as the Psyshock stabs his physical body.

Masaru isn’t out yet though. "Maasa, use Freeze Dry,” you yell. The air gets colder as wisps of chilly breeze waft from the Nevermeltice in circles around the piglet. Masaru takes in a loud, deep breath, the air cooling even further in his own cheeks. The Meowstic eyes the Held Item curiously and distractedly. Before he knew what was about to happen, the Ice-type blew out a single thick beam of lightblue energy, encased in frozen droplets and chilled winds. The attack strikes the body of the cat true, evident by the fact he crumbled in on all fours out of sheer cold and pain. Freeze Dry, an Ice-type move that is, unconventionally, effective against Water types. The Meowstic may not have been a Water type, but the move was a more than good hit nonetheless with the small bonus of the Nevermeltice. A glint appears in the eye of the Meowstic as he rears his head up and charges with great speed towards Masaru.

Masaru prepares to counter but the Meowstic deftly moves out of the way to strike it from the side. The cat retreated and Masaru was delivered a small blow. Not very painful or anything, making him question what the point was. You gasp though as you realized the Meowstic’s tactic. He even held his trophy up to gloat. The Nevermeltice! That surprisingly light move he had ordered must have been a Covet. The attack was only a light hit because the Meowstic was distracting Masaru so he could steal his Held Item. Masaru sniffs the ground further with another Odor Sleuth. He detects a peculiar smell, and, and, and, yes. Masaru is sure of it. There’s a Meowstic in the area…

The Meowstic opts to use his time more wisely though as he holds up his paws in a manner similar to what you’ve seen before; Reflect and Light Screen. A mystical energy flashes from his paws and stretches itself into a thin veil. It was exactly the same as Reflect, but the move doesn’t stack on top of itself. So what gives?

Never mind that. Masaru had his last orders. He gave a bellowing snort as white energy glowed brightly in his front legs. The Swinub erected himself on his hind legs with dazzling strength, and then slams his body down hard, his paws colliding with the earth forcefully. The energy rockets itself from his body and into the ground, a white energy zigzagging across the ground towards the opponent. The Meowstic stares at the rapidly approaching energy, too late to respond to it. The energy strikes the ground beneath him and, a second passes, the ground beneath him suddenly gives way and crumbles into a cavernous depth. The Meowstic yelps with a loud surprise as he’s suddenly dropped into the Fissure, bouncing against the edged boulders below out of view.

The cavern continues its rupture though, a Fissure not being specifically small or localized usually. And in a cramped space between the worn-out ruins of the labyrinth, the walls easily gave way and crumbled in on themselves as they collapsed into the fissure, only adding to the environmental devastation. The cracks rippled across the sides, and the walls flanking you, Masaru and Espurr were starting to crumble with the fissure growing in size from echoing destruction.

This place wasn’t safe. Get out of here!

You somehow managed to find yourself in a familiar location. You passed underneath an archway, miraculously untouched by the corrosive element of time, and enter a round chamber. The first thing to catch your eye is the large angelic statue in the centre of the room. Peaceful, beautiful, serene. Along the entire wall, from one side of the archway to the other, a cascade of flowing water fell into a basin that enclosed the circular room. Four singular channels stretched form the outside to an inner ring of water encircling the angelic statue. Your eyes focus on what the angel was holding. There wasn’t a blue orb here, though for some reason you thought there should have been, but a Pokéball. Your Pokéball to be exact. It was one of you team mates you had brought with you to Phantom Isle!

“RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRNGH!”

The roar appeared from behind you. And sure enough, the male Meowstic appeared, roughed up and beaten down somewhat by the strong Ground type move, but still nowhere near knocked out. He holds out his hands, and in a similar manner as to before, is preparing to set up a barrier of sorts.

This battle was far from over!

Things were starting to get climactic. The turntable was still spinning, you were pinned down by a Houndour, and Glamr was calling for help. You and Lapis exchange a split second glance of understanding. The turntable was your first priority, but that didn’t mean Lapis couldn’t disadvantage your opponent first. She hold up her hand and a glint of light flickers at her fingers. The Houndour’s body freezes stiff for a moment and then returns a growl at the Dusknoir who was already retreating to the switchboard. The hound opens its jaws and then sputters and coughs a black smoke, unable to fire another Ember. This was your chance. You lift your head to peer past the Dark-type to Glamr. "Nothing personal, but this train brought me here from the world of the living, and something's telling me it's the key to solving this place's problems! Gonna have to ask you guys to hold off for now!"

“Fool!” Glamr erupts. “This train isn’t salvation. It’s damnation. Anyone would know that, and you’re a fool for thinking otherwise. Virgil was right that this train was to bring trouble.” But the words didn’t stick as you focused on the task at hand. You grapple the Pokémon by it’s legs in an attempt to topple it off, or at least move its paws from your ribs. The Houndour is surprised by your sudden stirring and takes a few steps off of you but then instantly recomposes and retaliates, fiercely biting in one of your hands (your choice), tearing off pieces of undead skin and flesh. You wince, and perhaps even give a cry of pain. Tarth beneath you slowly halts its movement. The turntable had stopped you realised. A brief glance over reveals that the tracks weren’t perfectly aligned, but it might very well be enough.

You return to the offensive and dig the fingers of your other hand hard into the pupper’s eye. The Houndour growls and his grip is loosened somewhat only to be torn off immediately by a surprise Thunder Punch. Lapis had returned from the switchboard. The Hounddour yelps as it collapses to the floor, paralyzed and in shock.

“No!” you hear Glamr resound before bringing the whistle back to his lips. Gjen could only gurgle something offensive in his current state, which was likely to wear off soon.

And then, a Houndoom leapt from the shadows and surprised Glamr from behind. The Houndoom sunk his teeth into the fallen corpse, Glamr’s echoes of pain shrieking through the air and then dying down. Unconscious perhaps, you hope(?). A skeletal hand grabs you by the shoulder and pulls you back. It was the skeleton. His voice as gruffly deep as before. “Time to go.”

You look over and notice the wisp had rejoined your side as well, but that wasn’t the only company you had. A small troupe of scraggly undead were sauntering their way past you towards the train entrance, each casting you a menacing glance with a unique cackle. One was a little shriveled corpse, skin sunk into his skull of sharp features. His grin revealed a row of sharp teeth. Another was slim, had neither eyes nor nose, and had drawn a cape over his head to hide as much of this as he could. Two looked to be twin women. One sporting long, dry, grey hair that curled into thick locks like snakes, the other with a long sharp nose and nails that looked more like talons. The last was the most intimidating in stature and said nothing as he passed. This undead was more ogre than human, towering above anyone else you had met before, with thick club-like limbs and a square, flattened face. A wound on his throat made you wonder if that was why he was the only one who was silent.

“Get in, hurry up,” the skeleton ushered the troupe of ghouls inside the train. “Hope you don’t mind,” he speaks to you, “but I have a few friends who will be joining us.” One by one the ghouls entered the remaining carriage.

“Halt,” the voice was distant but unmistakable. In the distance, you saw Virgil and other conductors racing out of the building towards you. It would be a short while before they’d reach you.

“No time to waste,” the skeleton orders you. “Get in, we’re leaving.” The wisp seemingly somersault in the air and starts dancing around you, though you couldn’t be quite certain what for.

Things were getting hairy at the turntable, and with his investment into things Alex's words fell onto Glamr's ears as Lapis executed her strategy, a strange light emanating from her fingers at the Houndour pinning Alex down. Drfiting for the switchboard, she heard the threatening growl of the Houndour but paid little heed to it, knowing fully well it was just doing its job, even if that job was against her commands. The undead man's response to Alex, however, was not unexpected. Erupting, the driver barked that the train was trouble, bringing only damnation, and declaring the trainer a fool for thinking otherwise. Gee, I've only been here for half an hour if that, how was I meant to know... he thought to himself, before shifting his weight towards the dark type on his chest.

Grabbing at the Houndour, his relief as the hellhound backs off him in surprise swiftly turns into predictable resignation as he realises that even though there is no longer an angry dog standing on him, there was now an angry dog standing in range of him, and with his arms out there was asbolutely nothing he could do as jaws opened and dug into his right hand before pulling. Flesh and skin peeled off as Alex gasped in shock, before wincing heavily. Mew's ears, why'd that hurt!? I'm meant to be dead! In his surprise, he only vaguely realised there was no further movement beneath him, as the turntable stopped. Which meant that Lapis had been successful. Meaning that there was only one troublesome problem that needed seeing to.

With his left hand he gritted teeth and dug fingers into the Houndour's face, prodding at the eye of the canine who instinctively growled and relinquished its grip slightly, enough that he wasn't actively held. A good thing, as a meaty fist crackling with lightning uppercutted into the dark type, the pokemon yelping as Lapis made work of it as she hovered over Alex. "Right...on cue," he hissed as the quadruped harassing him ended up paralysed and in shock, to Glamr's vocal dismay. As the zombie raised the whistle to mouth again, Gjen's reaction was to give a gurgle of some sorts, the Dusknoir shaking her head. The binding around him would soon wear off, and that would mean dealing with the pair of them at once. Sure, her human ally had other options, but...

It then happened suddenly. Without warning, a much larger canine leapt from the shadows at Glamr, crunching into the zombie viciously from behind. The man shrieked, then went silent. In shock, Alex could only watch with some horror as the helpless man went limp in its grip, before something hauled him to his feet. The skeleton from earlier, in the nick of time, yet there was more to it than that. A lot more. Alongside him was the wisp, but what was more intriguing, and concerning, was the troupe of undead, each one with a nasty glance in their eye and a different yet disconcerting cackle.

One was a small creature with sharpened teeth, sunken skin seemingly stretched over sharper features, while another held a cape over a face, or something that seemed a face, only lacking eyes and nose from what he could see. Then there were the women, as such. One with thick and long hair like snakes, while another bore a long nose and fingers that ended in nails that seemed more like talons. Then there was the giant, with limbs larger than Alex's body and a square face. Together the motley crew sauntered into the train at the boneman's beckoning before turning to the trainer, rhetorically asking if he minded the extra company.

The distant voice of Virgil reached them, and turning momentarily at the source, Alex could see a number of conductors and the chief approaching swiftly, though it'd be a bit of time until they got there. The skeleton then ordered Alex to climb aboard as the wisp somersaulted and danced around him in some manner, though he couldn't tell whether or not it was excitement or alert. Alex's mind was moving swiftly, considering his options. He could follow suit and get back to the world of the living with this crew of unknown figures...but he hesitated, and confusion on his face gave way to sudden realisation, followed by frustration. I've been had.

He took a step backward from the train. "Lemme get this straight. Some new corpse comes in after a while of nothing, lost and vulnerable. You call this train your ticket outta here, knowing it needs something living and dead on board. You call me in, get me roped into an easy ticket back to life. I get on, and then what?" He paused briefly, looking in disgust at the Houndoom. "You and your crew of Halloween monsters return to the surface, to some abandoned island haunted by plenty of ghosts, spirits who can't pass on, according to what I heard. Meanwhile there's a literal ocean of lost souls here who can't pass on for god knows what reason, who will remain here without a way onward."

"At first I was a little skeptical, but now I'm convinced. That," he motioned towards Glamr, "was unnecessary. A quick smack or even binding. It's quite clear you've got some ulterior motives behind getting out of here, and in a way, that poor bastard was right. I'm a fool for thinking there's an easy way out, and a bigger fool for not reading the fine print on the Yveltal's deal, so to speak! I've no clue who you or your cronies are, and what you get out of returning to the world above, but if there's one thing that has to be made clear, it's that I don't take being bullshitted with kindly."

As he spoke, he thought to himself as Lapis looked towards him, the spectre's hunch for reading the human spot-on. 'Lapis, go for the switchboard quick, then break your hold on your prisoner and slam the brakes on the train with gravity.' While he relayed the message, his hand strayed for Tantalia's ball, ready to command the Conkeldurr to smack down the Houndoom before it got a chance to move, then to crack forth a rock tomb wall in front of the train to ensure it didn't get moving too quickly. He was no longer in the mood for following orders, and diplomacy hadn't got him too far down here. It was time for action, and he was preparing to get a bit of distance between him and the skeleton to avoid being forced on. He'd have to do some explaining to Virgil, preferably without being torn to shreds...
