Re: big bad birtha's suggestion box 2: secret passions unveiled
I personally believe that they did kill the show. Whenever I mention One Piece to people who have only seen the 4Kids version, they think my taste in shows suck. The rap intro. The awkward appearance of people without cigars in their mouth. The skipping of many, many episodes (not necessarily just the filler ones).
Anyway, I don't see how you can say, "Get over it, it's just a show" about 4Kids version when you do the exact opposite with stuff that involves VIZ manga and their translations being 'dumbed-down' and stuff. |

Re: big bad birtha's suggestion box 2: secret passions unveiled
*throws in 2¢*
Just to make sure you don't misunderstand, "nakama" doesn't mean "friend" as in "blood brother" or "spiritual special person." It's a much less emotionally vested term. Common words for friend are given with their appropriate counterpart context in English: tomodachi - "I lent my bike to my friend last night." (#1 dictionary English-to-Japanese selection for "friend" w/o any context clues to go off of) yuujin - "Joey is my friend," answered Yugi when asked what Joey meant to him. nakama - "My friends will rescue me," she told the villain who kidnapped her. another nakama example - "I won't abandon my friends!" Naruto declared. Nakama is like "comrades" or "companions." You'd describe your main character's friends in a JRPG as "nakama" (e.g. Tifa and Aeris and Barrett are Cloud's nakama). Nakama's the kind of word thrown around in shounen often because shounen anime so very often involve bands or groups of people who unite to fight a big evil. Yuujin earns a deep meaning because it's basically the Chinese reading of tomodachi (almost), and any time you say something in Chinese-Japanese that you could have said in Japanese-Japanese, it becomes more scholarly sounding. The best way I can put it is that Japanese-Japanese is like common English and Chinese-Japanese is like Latin. Examples: "learned" vs. "erudite," "friendly" vs. "sanguine." Just like how in our language the more Latin-based words tend to sound more heavily-weighted (e.g. "colossal" sounds bigger to most people than just "big"), so it is with Japanese. So "yuujin" is like the "colossal" version of friend, whereas "tomodachi" is the plain ol' "big" version of friend. So again: nakama < tomodachi (the standard) < yuujin

Re: big bad birtha's suggestion box 2: secret passions unveiled
I have spent most of today playing Underwaterrayromano. I made some actual progress this time. From what I have played so far, the combat is like a watered down Final Fantasy Tactics. However, I am still not too far, so I'm not going to pass judgment on that yet. I still like the story though. Also, I'd like to know of this combo thing you spoke of =o I see a meter when I finish a battle that says combo percentage. Dopple, I ask for you to explain, or hint to me what it is.

For some reason, it just seems trendy to bash 4Kids, and I don't like this because the offenders do so just for kicks, so I often end up DA for the company. I guess I'm sort of hypocritical in this sense taking a blind eye to many /b/tard pursuits of "lulz" at the expense of other people, but something about eighteen year old college kids bashing stuff seem less offensive than thirteen year old MySpace users mimicking them - there's a twisted level of understanding in the eighteen year old mind not found in that of the thirteen year old. That, and people who get obsessed over anime are taking it way too seriously. Quote:
... Talon, thanks for the clarification. If you're in a masochistic mood, you might consider looking at this. This is "nakama v. comrade" part III.

Re: big bad birtha's suggestion box 2: secret passions unveiled
Voted for Shark, and he won. Voted for the other Seto no Hanayome character just now, and I'm praying he beats out Keiichi. -_-; Higurashi, DIE! GTFO of my SaiGar!
I'm still bummed out that the Minami-ke horde voted in Hosaka over Kaiji. I love Minami-ke, but for an entirely different reason than most of the (lolikon + idiot humor) horde does, so it's both (a) a shame and (b) no surprise that they voted in Hosaka over Kaiji. Still ... *sigh* Of course I'll be supporting my man Hosaka over Shark. It's just ... this contest really should have been between Kaiji and Kittan / Simon / [insert Gurren Lagann character].

Yeah, I like Hosaka a whole lot, but I'm not sure if I can in good judgment vote for a guy all the way to the end who is, let's face it, not that manly.
I like Makoto too. Anybody who can have sex with that many schoolgirls while being an asshole gets my seal of approval. Edit: Oh what? I guess Makoto lost a long time ago.

EDIT: Sorry. Some pent up rage was coming out there ^_^; However, I can only take so much. Remember that if I do end up starting something! I'm getting tired of being insulted!
Err....Shuffle v.1 arrived if anyone cares. I'll check out the dub when I get the initiative. |

Re: big bad birtha's suggestion box 2: secret passions unveiled
Shark is amazing. He was a cool in the show, but he's only a secondary character - if we don't count Hosaka, Shark is the first secondary character to make it this far. And he did it by eating two Gurren-Lagann characters and Kino! Like Talon I voted for Nagasumi, K1 isn't very manly even in the first season, and his second season incarnation is a lot like Akio/Kamina - makes a lot of emotionally appealing speeches but is all talk. At least Akio was semi-responsible and Kamina had a few fighting skills! K1 has NOTHING!
Talon - I think people generally like Minami-ke for the same reason they liked Azumanga and Lucky Star, for the slice of life comedy. Hosaka is getting honest to god praise; they've even got a new term for him, "Quixotic Gar". o_o That said, I think Kaiji's episode not coming out was a real blow to him. Two weeks of getting owned by Tonegawa = -100 GAR points in the eyes of a lot of people. Which is sad, since from the two screencaps I saw of yesterday's episode Kaiji would have easily won had that episode been subbed. I'm not sure if you lot know about the /a/ v. /jp/ fiasco going on up there but it's causing a lot of hectic problems with the community, I'm not sure how that will impact stuff in the future. Tomorrow is also THE BIG DAY!

Umm.....I wasn't going to mention this, but you did blatantly insult me not too long ago, and I was still pissed at that. I hate to say, but what I said was nothing compared to that.......

Re: big bad birtha's suggestion box 2: secret passions unveiled
Keiichi lost. w007.
Taking votes. Should I go for Lord Genome or Kittan? I have no idea who deserves it more -- both strike me as "big names" in TTGL. IIRC you suggested you wanted Lord Genome and said Kittan wasn't very Gar, but just let me know, Doppel. I've got 53 minutes anyway.

Lord Genome, easily. Kamina was pretty cool, he inspired Simon and all that. But Lord Genome kicked major arse, was rather selfless (went through a lot in his lifetime) and became an ally despite being the major enemy for the first two arcs of the series. He also blocked the Big Bang.

I decided to start at normal. That's where I usually start off in games.

I heard that it's unforgivable to play on easy mode unless you're an elementary school kid, so I always start video games on normal now.

Same here. I'm ashamed to say I play easy nowadays. Also, BBB, what you're looking for is in the Training session, it teachers you how to do combos. The short version is to just hold down alt, but those combos are weaker than the normal way which is to press on the circles that appear when your character hits an enemy.

Re: big bad birtha's suggestion box 2: secret passions unveiled
Yea....the only game I have played recently on easy mode, is of course, Touhou. I started on normal and it kicked my ass.
Anyway, thanks. I already figured it out though. I also realized that your technique is what makes the circles appear. So if you have 5 technique points, you can hit them five times if you time the clicking right. Then if you vitality is full, you get an extra one. If your technique is maxed out, and your vitality is full, you can string all of your attacks and then make a super attack =D Also, I'd like it if Eruruu healed from a distance. I mean, having her so close to the party is like asking to have her killed. I mean, if the enemy was smart enough to attack her that is (probably due to the difficulty I chose.) She looks JUST like a white mage afterall. Also, it seems like some scenes are cut short. I'll assume that is where h-scenes are supposed to be if I am on a higher difficulty? |

Yes that's right. Also, I've just finished the new Ghost Hound. This series is getting really bloody awesome! It needs more subs, though. A lot more subs. Also, finished another Tetsuya, it's still the same cheatin' anime but it's a tad better. A lot of GL references in Hayate this week I hear.

Re: big bad birtha's suggestion box 2: secret passions unveiled
*looks at todays round* =o That actually is kind of surprising.
Anyway, off to one of my real reasons for posting. Suigin, I apologize for all of that nonsense I spewed at j00 yesterday. I had no reason to say any of it and it was a result of me being an emotional bitch who was getting mad at nothing. It seems that I'm still not 100% out of this annoying phase >.> I left those few times so everyone wouldn't have to put up with that (well, that and some other reasons I don't want to bother everyone with.)...... Also, I thank j00 for being understanding of it. I would like to do something to thank you, but I can't exactly think of what. I mean, I could show you some Kiwami-ke, but that'd probably piss you off @_@ Oh! I know! How about some candy? =D.............. Okay, I have nothing ;_; I understand if you find me not worth talking to anymore, but I wanted to somewhat explain myself. Anyway, my posts in the next two or three days will be reduced. One reason is to avoid being an ass, and the other is because Daybreak has been downloaded, and I'll be playing that. One more thing. I am quite far in Underwaterrayrromano. I'm at the point to where Hokouro is about to find out about himself =3 |

Re: big bad birtha's suggestion box 2: secret passions unveiled
Double-post, but double the news to report.
First, I just placed my vote for Kittan. I know Doppel likes Giovanni, but hey, I can't be a 2nd arm for Doppel every round :P , and besides, I think I already played my part to make dreams come true for the both of us. ;D *voted for Lord Genome, of course* Second, as I was typing the paragraph above, my download of Kaiji 19 sub just completed. I promised to not watch it until tomorrow because I need to study (I fell asleep at some time between 6 and 7pm last night, woke up at 12midnight but went back to bed, woke up at 2am but went back to bed, woke up at 3:00-something and stayed up), so ... it's 4:35am local right now, and I'm finishing up my pre-breakfast of canned peaches. I'll probably make a cheese-and-toast sandwich at around 7am before heading up to school. I've got 2+ hours of stuff to do, so yeah, no more time for distractions or Kaiji. Lucky for me, I've spent the last hour getting to all of my websites and whatnot, so I'm good to go. So yeah! Go download Kaiji 19 and vote for your man -- Kittan or Giovanni.

Re: big bad birtha's suggestion box 2: secret passions unveiled
The tournament's really shaping up. If not for Rena's victory I'd say the block finals were pure win. It's going to be a push to get Claire to beat "THE LAST STAND OF THE 4CHANNER TROLLS" though, but with /jp/ splitting the board down the middle it could happen pretty easily.
... I just finished the Kaiji episode, it's a cliffhanger but a lot was revealed in this episode that explains the stuff from before. What did I learn? Tonegawa's no Akagi Light, that's for sure!

Re: big bad birtha's suggestion box 2: secret passions unveiled
I was pretty surprised when that was revealed. I actually believed Tonegawa when he said they did the game purely for recreation and there'd be no reason to cheat!
Wow, I can't believe Kamina lost. His fans can't even blame proxies either, because barely anybody showed up to vote for him. The whole thing is just really bizarre. Maybe everybody on /a/ was too depressed over the Weeaboo Wall coming up that they couldn't be bothered.
