So

I build a Minerva Turbo Lightsworn deck that uses a Clownblade engine (along with Hat Tricker and Assault Halberd) to make easy Rank 4s and mill through the deck. It works (scarily well).

But I may have _accidentally_ decked myself out. Oops.

So, some things I have discovered:
  • Clownblade is a very good Rank 4 engine. It gives Rank 4 resiliency which isn't very common in Rank 4 decks and is nearly immune to a lot of the common counters that plague Rank 4 decks, such as effect negation and backrow. Compulse an Xyz monster? They'll just get another one. This interaction can also occur in the Damage Step, making it even more difficult to work around. With Graveyard restrictive traps like Soul Drain and MacroFissure limited, its extremely difficult to get a solid first turn answer to this engine.
  • The engine has a lot of synergy with cards that either detach their materials or remove themselves from the field in order to use their effects. Cards like Castel, Number 101, Diamond Dire Wolf, and most importantly Planetellarknight Ptolemaios in order to make more Rank 4s. Lavaval Chain is also a key card since if you only have one of the pieces (say Thousand Blades) you can mill the other one while still getting the combo off.
  • Even though the deck might seem to have some fragility in that Tricklown requires you take 1000 damage every time you use its effect, Tricklown and Thousand Blades can actually very easily stop OTKs by themselves, meaning you have to typically be pretty low on lifepoints for your opponent to punch through you.
  • While its perfectly possible to have an engine of just Tricklown and Thousand Blades, the better decks also use the other Heroic and Entermage cards. Assault Halberd is notable for being an 1800 CyDra who searches when he inflicts damage and is good at the start of the duel (and one of the best targets for ROTA in the game, much better than Photon Thrasher), and Entermage Hat Tricker is a Geargiaaccelerator that's not only generic but also has a very easy summoning requirement. It's very easy to have two monsters on the field between you and your opponent and he makes Ptolemaios need less cards in the Extra Deck to function, which is always a good thing. Entermage Damage Juggler helps to prevent OTKs while giving a viable searching outlet to Hat Tricker.
  • Minerva, Lightsworn Saint, is extremely powerful support. It has no material restrictions meaning it can be summoned with pretty much every single Level 4 monster in the game, and it also has an amazing effect. Every Wulf, Felis, or Lightsworn Judgment you mill turns into a +2, and not only has made Garoth obselete but made the deck more powerful and safer at the same time. There is no reason now to ever mill in the End Phase, because between Raiden, Minerva, Charge of the Light Brigade, and Solar Recharge, all the milling you'll ever need happens in the Main Phase.
  • Lightsworn Judgment is an OK card. While its not totally useless when drawn, its still really slow and since Lightsworn typically wants to go second in order to OTK, its a little discouraging having to wait until Turn 4 in order to search out Judgment Dragon. But this card solves one of the issues with Lightsworn that Minerva (in both forms), Garoth, Felis, and Wulf were pointing to: the Lightsworn cards do nothing when milled and hence are essentially blanks in that case. The deck is slowly moving away from that.
  • CyDra Infinity is actually really quite broken in OTK decks, in the same way that Quasar is. While negating one card during your opponent's turn isn't as powerful and is quite easy to bait out, this is not the case during your turn. Your opponent might only have one card that they need in order to disrupt your plays and prevent you from OTKing. While its a "reactive stun monster", it helps OTKs out immensely by stopping backrow and removing your opponent's front row. I really do think that once CyDra Infinity comes out, Ptolemaios should be banned because Infinity isn't really broken in his own deck (and of course, needs to compete with other very good cards like Chimeratech Rampage Dragon).

I really do think that the game is slowly changing shape again.

I should actually duel real people with some of my more "fun" decks, since they aren't really half bad. Reaper Prophecy is a weird beast though.

Mako's boss card got an upgrade, thanks to Arc-V!

Quote:
Densetsu no Fisherman Sansei / The Legendary Fisherman III
Water Warrior / Special Summon / Effect
LV7 2500/2000
Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand) by Tributing 1 “The Legendary Fisherman” and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. (1) When this card is Special Summoned: You can banish all monsters your opponent controls. This card cannot attack during this turn. (2) Cannot be destroyed by battle or effect, and is unaffected by Spell/Trap Effects. (3) Once per turn: You can return as many of your opponent’s banished cards to the Graveyard as possible, and if you do, one time for the rest of this turn, double the battle or effect damage your opponent would take.
I'm giggling in laughter because despite how weird it is to get this card out it is also impressively dumb.

So I'm considering taking out BLS for another Shaddoll Dragon, and just running Raigeki for removal.

Thoughts?

The main question is if you find yourself in situations in which you'd need the second Shaddoll dragon. You could also run Secret Sect Druid Dru or Masked Chameleon. I feel like taking out BLS for another Dragon is a subpar choice myself, and these choices would also still give you some of the monster removal you like (arguably, Castel's is a bit better than BLS and EEK gives you massive nuking power) but at the cost of Extra Deck space. I dunno.

It's a board control issue, mostly. When I summon BLS these days it's to abuse its levels for looping, not so much its OTK or removal effects. As part of the loop, Scrap Dragon is usually sufficient for that, and I have to clear the field of backrow as a per-requisite to looping, for the most part.

BLS is the only card that I need light/darks for now. Dragon meanwhile, while a once-per-turn thing, maxes Tuning mills since I can't search it in the same way I can my other cards. Before Raigeki was unbanned, I definitely needed BLS for spot removal but unless the monster can't die by destruction, Raigeki + Dark Law is more than enough for most fields.

Versus a stun monster, Raigeki is also preferred. Think Constellar Pleiades, who isn't played anymore. If I have to vaporize my grave so BLS baits it out, I can't do a follow-up play to get my combos off. It's a total waste. Pleiades could easily bounce Doppelwarrior once summoned, leaving me with a useless Junk Synchron + Level 1 tuner and that Level 1 tuner might be my only light, so BLS can't be a follow-up.

For the most part, BLS is a counter play monster. He isn't so useful in the first few turns of the duel, where I need to do my damage, and my deck loses topdeck wars anyway. Milling him does nothing. I've already ditched my sorcerers for the same reason, so I think while powerful BLS just doesn't offer enough combo to be effective.

I think that's my main issue with the switch, is that its mainly being used for the random mills off of Tuning. Your basically using it as an MST and I guess Level 4 fodder but you only run 1 Level 7 to my knowledge (Yazi) so I don't see him being too useful there. I generally think that cards in a deck should have more than one use. I've dropped Honest from a lot of my LIGHT decks because of that. I took out the hands in my Superheavy Samurai deck because of it. Cards should be versatile, hence my suggestion of the Rank 4 enablers. You aren't using Dragon for anything else really, so to me, it only makes sense. Of course I also think Clear Wing Synchro Dragon is a staple in any Synchro heavy deck since its effects are honestly better in the meta right now than anything else, but you disagree with me there. :p

Thing is, Dragon has a lot of utility to me. If there's a big monster, like Felgrand or Dora, I can set it as removal. The MST effect happens via Foolish, Hand Destructions and Mask Change 2, and I use it for Allure and beatstickings.

What's really needed, way more than Clear Wing, is a generic Spell/Trap negator or a Level 9 with removal effects. Clear Wing as a Level 9, or Stardust as a Level 7 would all be good.

You don't use Mist Wurm at all? I mean I know you want Trishula and its definitely more powerful but Mist Wurm could still be good.

On generic Spell/Trap negators...umm...exactly how many Dark Law would you say you go through in a duel?

I don't use anything that requires more than one tuner/one non-tuner. There isn't enough room for a card that can't be summoned at any one time. Level 9 is a far more common combination than say, Level 10. Just by virtue of Level Eater stopping levels at Level 4 with a lot of Level 3 Tuners.

I summon one Dark Law pretty frequently. Two is a bit harder.

The Spell/Trap negator is important not for Trap negation, but Spell. It's even more powerful in the Pendulum Age where I can hit a scale for free. Beast would be great if it were generic...but it ain't.

So blaze and anyone else, I'm looking for a YGO card that kind of looks like an alien in a robe I think. At least I think it's a YGO card, but I can't see it listed under Psychics, Worms, or Aliens.

It's facing left, has big eyes and a long snout or chin I think, and in a robe. Any idea what it is?
