Polygamy

The recent Supreme Court decision said that marriage is an important social institution and that it embodies high ideals and all that, but he said that "in forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were". I feel that this is going to be picked apart, and that, just like the 'right' to marry someone of the same sex was found to be in the Constitution, the 'two people" portion will be expanded to lead to legal polygamous marriage in the very near future.

Polygamy is bad for societies because it takes women away from the dating pool, leading to extra single, heterosexual men. In societies with legal polygamy, you see more violence by these men who have little to no sexual options. Agree/disagree?

Is there any proof of this? I've personally never heard about this although I feel I could be totally oblivious.

This is speculation, I haven't looked this up to confirm it.

He's probably talking about certain parts of the Middle East and the young men with no attractive options for a wife due to the rich men taking all of them who join terrorist groups due to their promises of receiving stuff like virgins in the afterlife. Could alternatively lead to depression and other mental issues. So I don't have proof, but I think that's what he's talking about.

Instinctively, I think men seek to have as many partners as possible and are jealous at men with lots of female attention. That creates the scenario Mozz describes, because the envy is biologically hardwired. However, I don't think that's a legit argument because Mozz assumes that all guys are actively looking for partners. As marriage becomes increasingly romantic over economic, the practicality of imperfect partners is going to fall apart for settling on partners who aren't perfect fits. After-all, there are high penalties for divorce, so I think the future of society is already set in motion: people marry late, if at all, in anticipation for meeting an ideal romantic partner.

Or to put it another way, if my neighbour had 5 wives, while instinctively I might be jealous, culturally/philosophically, I wouldn't. Because a woman who was willing to become one of five wives would be below my standards for commitment, so if I had this knowledge I wouldn't pursue this person. She isn't a perfect fit.

This is statistics: 43% of marriages end in divorce, but 60% of re-marriages end in divorce. It doesn't matter how attractive someone is, the more boyfriends they've had, the less likely they are to commit to marriage, because they've shown over and over the inability to maintain a stable relationship. Hence, fewer people get married or heck, become intimate despite strong motivations of intimacy.

On polygamy itself as a legal institution, the long term impact I feel is the loss of tax benefits across all marriage licenses. Polygamy would be the straw that breaks the camel's back as it invites tons of opportunities for fraud, since men will need increasing tax breaks to care for more wives.

I must say that I'm a bit surprised that this entire discussion has been solely about one man with two+ women. While I believe that due to societal norms (male supremacy), the aforementioned polygamous format would probably be more common, it still seems entirely likely that there could be women with multiple husbands. Would this not balance out the men with multiple wives?

Polygamy is seen with far, far more vitriol because of the cultural tradition of misogyny and paternalism in so many human societies. There's almost no way I can think about polygamy objectively, because of the strong connotations with objectification, social slavery, and brainwashing.

It's really hard for me to think of negative things toward polygyny.

That said, I personally believe that incest/polygamy won't gain legal traction because individuals practicing either will be subject to immense discrimination, and both are so widely reviled even those who blindly support civil rights will have a tough time being motivated to champion for them.
