Why is this being brought up now instead of being dealt with earlier?!? FAKE NEWS! > accusations of a candidate brought up once he starts running for office Clearly politically manufactured charges! Fake news!

The Obama-era regulations may be kill, but that doesn't mean the fight ends here. There's a push in Congress to enshrine Net Neutrality regulations in law and it has a pretty notable bipartisan backing. Keep after your Reps and Senators. Don't let them forget it.

That's a better use of time than trying to tweet at the FCC. I thought it was pretty ridiculous that people were thinking Ajit Pai was not going to vote against net neutrality when Trump appointed him to the FCC chair for that exact purpose. Nothing was going to persuade him except a pink slip.

The fact Ajit Pai could be appointed to that position is a disgrace to your country in and of itself, to be entirely honest.

Looks like WA and CA are already drafting NN rules for any in-state operators, which is kind of how it should be, imo?

Disney is like my #1 hated company now. I'm pretty much on autoflame to anyone who says anything positive of that company or its properties.
I dislike this position since it means I'm biased and no longer credible as as a critic, but...I don't really care. That its argument of "we beat Netflix or go bankrupt" is dumb as heck.

Just as an FYI, the interstate commerce clause is an old one and is the reason MLB maintains a monopoly on professional baseball in North America.

CDC gets list of forbidden words: “vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “transgender,” “fetus,” “evidence-based” and “science-based.”
Fetus, for fuck's sake. What the fucking fuck.

I am severely worried about the inclusion of transgender on that list.

I hate boomers more than millennials, still.
A lot of this push-back is coming from efforts to appease Trump's base, who are mostly disenfranchised boomers. You would have thought that the boomers would be more tolerant/progressive than the greats, but they're not and are probably less. Something from Quora: "Why is Fox News so popular?" Quote:

Since moving back to California I've noticed there are a lot more homeless than there's ever seen before. Resident-Hispanic-Homeless tension appears to be at a high, to the point I fought one homeless man and nearly got into a fight with 2 more.
According to my sister, Arizona and Nevada towns are sponsoring programs where they charter a bus and round up all the homeless people - bribing them with food - and drive them to California to dump them in big cities like San Diego and Los Angeles. The homeless then migrate north after they're driven out by conflict in southern California. I dunno how accurate this is, but if it's true, what do you all think?

I don't think the analogy is apt because at what point was the US trying to close out a win? Russia is also content at being a villain whether they make inroads economically or not. Politically, I don't think they'll ever be satisfied until they can reassemble the Soviet Union member states. But Russia sort of circles the plugged toilet bowl on the money side, never really going anywhere.

"I have already intimated to you the danger of parties in the state, with particular reference to the founding of them on geographical discriminations. Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party, generally.
"This spirit, unfortunately, is inseparable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human mind. It exists under different shapes in all governments, more or less stifled, controlled, or repressed; but, in those of the popular form, it is seen in its greatest rankness, and is truly their worst enemy. "The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty." - George Washington on political parties "Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I conjure you to believe me, fellow-citizens,) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake; since history and experience prove, that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of Republican Government. But that jealousy, to be useful, must be impartial; else it becomes the instrument of the very influence to be avoided, instead of a defence against it. Excessive partiality for one foreign nation, and excessive dislike of another, cause those whom they actuate to see danger only on one side, and serve to veil and even second the arts of influence on the other. Real patriots, who may resist the intrigues of the favorite, are liable to become suspected and odious; while its tools and dupes usurp the applause and confidence of the people, to surrender their interests." - George Washington on foreign influence and on choosing favorites among nations "From whence shall we expect the approach of danger? Shall some trans-Atlantic military giant step the earth and crush us at a blow? Never. All the armies of Europe and Asia...could not by force take a drink from the Ohio River or make a track on the Blue Ridge in the trial of a thousand years. No, if destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men we will live forever or die by suicide." - Abraham Lincoln on America's fate The first part (on Washington's views on political parties) is nothing new to Internet-using Americans, but for me at least the Lincoln quote was new and the other Washington quote, while from the same source as the political parties quote, was much less familiar to me and every bit as salient today as its political parties partner.

ah the politics thread
just popping by to say that it's absurd that taking children from their families in locking them in cages is now a partisan issue but I guess that's just the world we live in now

I have been looking at it and yet I still cannot believe that the Space Force is real. Is it? It's August, it's not April's Fools.
How can anyone consider one country in the world having a military branch in space anywhere near a good idea? If anyone feels this is pressing and necessary, shouldn't it be the UN who is doing this?

I learned details about this while in training. The US military seems 100% behind it.
The Space Force's primary mission will be the protection and maintenance of US satellites, which are critical to US defense and right now completely undefended. Advances in drone technology, and SpaceX's success at making launches successful and cheaper, suggest that destruction of satellites is within reach of private agencies, so simply leaving satellites up there is no longer acceptable. In the future, I think the Space Force will be tasked with what the Planetes crew had to take care of: space debris that could damage ships in orbit or at the Lagrange Points.

Are there concerns about a potential new arms race? For as long as we are up there protecting our satellites, we represent a very real threat to other nation's satellites in addition. I worry this could potentially a big shift in global politics like how nuclear weapons were.
My other concern is space to ground weapons but I imagine they're either unfeasible or not worth it over current systems.
