That's not really the point Deh. When the Republicans forced the shutdown, people rightly called them out on it. The Democrats would be doing the exact same thing, and the only defence for it would be "but we're right". Which, guess what, is the exact same reasoning some random Tea Party jobber would've used to support the shutdown last year. Your or my opinion is no more special or important than random Tea Party jobbers. It would be incredibly arrogant to declare a shutdown on the basis of our principles justified and an identical shutdown based on someone elses principles to be not so.
Petty brinkmanship is not how mature responsible people manage a nation of three hundred million people.

Shoutout to Ted Cruz for fighting to keep his title of "Most Hated Person in Congress".

We already lost Colbert and now that we lost Jon I feel like crying. I have no reason to watch my television anymore when Survivor isnt on.
At least John Oliver's still going strong; Last Week Tonight is probably my favorite thing to watch. |

I'm assuming they'll use one of the correspondents, Samantha Bee and Jason Jones both looks like good candidates. Hell, they're married, so they might even co-host it.

I haven't watched it yet but I've heard some good things about Larry Wilmore (he's got a new show that took Colbert's slot). And of course Last Week Tonight is it's own sort of special so props to John Oliver on that. I can't imagine who will replace Jon Stewart though, one would presume they'd give it to one of the correspondents, but who knows.

I think Stewart's show with Stewart was a delightfully happy accident. I don't see it being successfully orchestrated again this next time 'round, although I do think they will try.
Stewart had a very unique personality which hybridized the bulldog and the Ludicolo. He had, has, a special knack for superficially being silly and squealy but just under that surface, very perceptibly so, being incredibly serious, sometimes even scathing or damning. If Comedy Central is to replace Stewart successfully, this personality trait, I think, will prove most important to maintaining the same feel as Stewart's Daily Show. Otherwise it's going to be Drew Carry on The Price is Right all over again.

I'll admit that I never really followed these kind of shows (I don't even know what they are called!) so this really doesn't impact me at all.
*lurks curiously*

@Stealthy Larry Willmore was good when he was a correspond for The Daily Show, and I assume that will carry over as it has for so many others.
@Talon John Oliver did an admirable job of replacing him last summer while he was filming, so it's clearly doable. Whether it needs someone of his talent level (which, no offense to any of the people who might take over, I think something the current candidates lack) has yet to be seen. |

Well since the gay marriage thread is locked (and for very understandable reasons on revisiting the now three-year old thread), I guess this as good a place as any to post this update:
Supreme Court rules 5-4 in favor of same-sex marriage. Effective immediately(?), all fifty states must a) provide for gay marriages in their own states and b) recognize gay marriages that happened out of state. Suffice it to say that it was contentious. All four nays wrote their own individual dissents.

You can be pro-gay marriage and think the majority opinion was a complete joke.

You could expand on your argument instead of posting two words that make you sound like a complete twat.

I feel the same way about dunces celebrating the ruling without caring about how it completely disregards the US Constitution.

Don't be such a cunt Mozz. Justify your opinion or piss off.
Anyway I'm happy about the principle but haven't read the ruling so can't say whether fits with the constitution -which I haven't read in about three years haha. I think that people who oppose this principle are on the wrong side of history and demographics so will likely not stay strong for too many years. Obama's speech was good. |

Just a few snippets from Roberts and Scalia's dissents:

Frankly I think Roberts is deliberately and obtusely full of shit. His argument is bollocks. He's a Supreme Court Judge that is literally his role in life. Yes, judicial activism is a serious question which does need to be addressed in a democratic society but you can't hide behind it when you sit on the bench.
Scalia I can get on board with the logic of even if I don't personally agree. I would take Obama's line - interpretation rightly changes with the times, just as we no longer stone people for eating fish on a Sunday. |
