Medievalism
What's the big deal?
Why is this theme so pervasive in video games, TV shows, and movies? It's not like there aren't titles set in other time periods, but I see very little media devoted to Antiquity outside of the Roman Empire, and very little in the Modern period outside of explosive time periods like the 1930's or 1960's. I also feel like the biggest and most interesting elements of the middle ages - how the human race had to recover from the loss of knowledge and civilization in Antiquity - is glossed over when the time period and level of technology is appropriated for stories. Consider, the story of the vikings and their horned helmets, where in the public conscience vikings and neo-lithic barbarian tribes are merged together into a single entity, even though 5,000 years separate the two groups.

Because swords are cool.
Even Star Wars needs sword fights.
