Disney & Pixar Thread
I was talking to Josh about the upcoming Hunchback of Notre Dame Musical, which combines the novel's dark tone with the film's music and is expected to sweep the Tonys/Oliviers. Anyway, we were clogging the Skype chat with our talk about Disney musicals and were recommended to create a thread to discuss Disney and Pixar. Please keep Star Wars and MCU discussions in another thread: this thread is all about the films from Disney and Pixar Animation departments. We can talk about anything from the Hunchback of Notre Dame musical to Inside Out or Moana. Or past Disney films which made your childhood. Which films did you enjoy the most? For me, I distinctively remember watching Beauty & the Beast and thinking that what I was watching resembled pure magic. Lion King was the formative part of every male's boyhood, but B&tB was the first to strike a chord in me. The score and animation got to me. I mean, this scene still sends goosebumps up and down in me: What about you? What were the films of your childhood? And which of the more recent Disney-Pixar films did you embrace? |

I'll post a long-ish review of Big Hero 6 in the movie thread at some point, but I'll take the opportunity to say that Feast is probably my favorite animated short ever. Great story, great art and made a genuine connection without needing dialogue. Masterful work.

I adore Hunchback but this thread immediately creeped me out by suggesting titles like Tangled and Up! qualify as nostalgia fodder. Those were only a few years ago...

The Disney-Pixar films of my childhood were likely Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Lilo and Stitch, The Lion King and of course my favorite Disney movie of all, Beauty and the Beast. As for recent-ish favorites, Frozen *dodges tomatoes*, Up, Incredibles, Tangled, Toy Story 3...and a few others I can't think of right now.
The OP did ask about what recent Disney-Pixar films you embraced, so they qualify for that much, at least.

Is it trendy to hate on Frozen right now? I can't remember if I've seen it, or if I just read summaries of it.

It's pretty trendy to hate it, alright. Most of it just comes from, "Let it Go" more than anything else, because of the attention the song got back in 2013. I can agree it is a bit annoying to hear it everywhere, but I don't really mind.

Frozen marketing has blown up and has been shoved in our faces. That explains why many people are weary. However, I rewatched it again and it still holds up. But yeah, oversaturation.

Congratulations to both Big Hero 6 and Feast for taking home the Academy awards for best animated feature and best animated short! Both exceptionally well deserved.

I wouldn't say I hate Frozen, but I hate the constant references to it. Walked into GameStop in the mall a few days ago, and saw several Frozen themed DS cases and the like. Seriously?
The movie itself was ehh, alright, but definitely not the 'best Disney movie' to date, as I've heard some friends and family call it. I probably won't be interested in the sequel either. But I'm preparing myself for the explosion of new Idina Menzel songs that will most likely come with it. EDIT: OHMYGOD that Hunchback link though. I hate myself for missing this. Please Lord let me find a recording of it somewhere!

I finally saw Big Hero 6 after everyone was talking about it. I really liked the concept and it was enjoyable, humorous and heartwarming. It doesn't top Wreck It Ralph in my eyes, but I'd definitely recommend it.
Two thumbs up. In another Disney-related news, re-watched Lilo & Stitch recently. Remains flawless. |

Joy is cute. I wasn't the only person to think this apparently.
I hate the fans of it though, calling it a Pixar movie when it's not. Oh, so if it's 3D and good, it's Pixar, but 3D and bad it's Disney?

Erm, I haven't seen the movie so I think I'm as far as you can get in terms of a fan, but a quick look at Wikepedia clearly says this was produced by Pixar and released by Disney. So, it kinda is a Pixar movie.

Not seen Inside Out but it looks fun. Expecting to love Disgust since she's voiced by Mindy Kaling. |

Also be prepared to struggle to see Joy as anyone other than Leslie Knope for the entire first half of the movie, Parks and Recs fans. Joy is Leslie Knope to a T.

Oh, is that how it is? My mistake then.

Ghibli is the same way, really. They haven't released a good film since Spirited Away but people continue to extol the company for their newer, far lesser films.

I gotta say, as probably the least Pixar-fan-y person here (with the notable exception of Muyo), I wholeheartedly enjoyed Inside Out. A really cute, fun film that made me laugh out loud and, yes, shed a tear. That said, I didn't find it to be the weepfest the reviews I've read made it out to be? (To be perfectly honest, I felt a lot weepier about the short that preceded it, which absolutely gave me The Feels.)
But I really liked it! And I will probably even get the DVD and not just for my niece. Disgust is the best, hands down. I want her outfit. I love Lewis Black.

Oh god Lava. I did not like that one single bit, the cinema was quiet the entire short, it missed the mark completely for me and apparently all the people who were also seeing it.
Thankfully Inside Out was a million times better than Lava, and I legit loved it. Joy, Disgust and Sadness gave me life.

Watched it today. I really liked it. If you go into it not expecting much, you get a fun kids movie with a nice message. Inside Out didn't tug the heartstrings like Wall-E, but it was a way better than Brave or Cars. I'd put it up there in the Bug's Life/Wreck-It Ralph tier of "cute movie with surprising nuance".
Also, Sadness is amazing. She was ironically one of the funniest characters. Not to mention adorable. This moment made the cinema laugh: Spoiler: show |

Oh god I want to see Inside Out
Anyway I'm a pretty big fan of Disney and Pixar in general (my three favourite movies are Finding Nemo, Lilo & Stitch, and Big Hero 6 so >_>) so yeah, they had some misses but in general they're pretty great, I'd say. |
