Impacts

Which gen/game do you think made the most impact? Gen 4 with the new evolutions? Gen V for having a refreshing feel?

And yes the title is vague, sue me : )

I think Gen 1 made the biggest "impact" since it left an impact on JRPG gaming period whereas the other gens have moreso only left impacts on the Pokemon fandom.

Talon makes the best point, but aside from Gen 1 I think its easily Gen 3 with the addition of Natures and Abilities.

What did Gen IV contribute, anyway?

Cynthia?

The introduction of Stunfisk had the biggest impact on me.

Wifi trading/battling and auto lvl100 for battles. That's why I came back to Pokemon really. Or at least, it helped a lot.

Following Weebos' lead, if we're going to restrict the discussion to the fandom only (meaning we're only talking about the impact generations have had on the fandom, and thus relegating the discussion to Gens 2 thru 5 only), ...

I'd have to say the award goes to Gen 2. Again, I don't think people appreciate at just what a fundamental level the gameplay has changed the farther back you go in the past. Sure, some big changes have come about (like Gen 5's exp gain or Gen 4's wifi battles), but let's consider how Gen 2 changed the face of the games forever:
  1. Pokemon could now learn other Pokemon's moves
    • this had been something every competitive battler had dreamed about in Gen 1
    • and courtesy of breeding, introduced in Gen 2, it became a reality. You could now have a Rhydon know "a Tauros's moves," as it were. You have to realize: certain moves were creature-exclusive (or at the very least exclusive to a small clade of animals) but that pretty much ended with Gen 2's introduction of breeding. Sure, each gen has seen a few signature moves be introduced, but without fail they become accessible to other creatures within one or two generations. (See: Eruption Typhlosion in Gen 4.) Those of you who grew up with Gens 2 or later will probably take this one for granted, but for anyone who grew up starting with Gen 1, they know what I'm talking about.
  2. Two new types were introduced.
    • This has never again been done. And it had a HUGE impact on the games. Psychic had been the tour-de-force type in Gen 1, and GameFreak saw to massively address that in Gen 2 by all but nerfing Psychic. The two new introduced types strongly reflected this -- one boasting a resistance, the other a flat-out immunity. This would be like if, in Gen 5, they had invented a new type just to screw Scizor, Gyarados, and Gengar over. If creating some new moves to shake up the metagame is akin to dropping an atom bomb, then what Gen 2 did by introducing some anti-psychic types was to nuke every square inch of the entire world.
  3. Hold Items
    • By themselves, I don't think they're as big a factor as Abilities, a point Weebos brought up in favor for Gen 3 getting the vote. But I think they're at least as big a point as Natures, if not arguably more so ...
    • ... and they're still a major point worth mentioning for why Gen 2 deserves the vote.
  4. established the precedent that pre-existing creatures can still ...
    • ... evolve into new things
    • ... learn moves they never knew before
  5. first game to feature cameos
    • this is a fun easter egg-type thing which by no means is the major draw for any one gen, but it was something the fandom woofed down when GameFreak fed it to them in the form of Jasmine in Diamond/Pearl, and it's something that in hindsight we notice is awkwardly missing from Gen 3. But unlike both of these gens (and not really seen in such grandeur until their very own remakes ten years later in the form of HGSS), the Gen 2 games were the ones that went full out, giving us ... how many awesome cameos? Let's see ...
    • Professor Oak
    • Lance
    • Koga
    • Brock
    • Misty
    • Lt. Surge
    • Erika
    • Sabrina
    • Blaine
    • Green / Blue / Gary
    • Red / Ash
    • That's a lot of fun cameos. And it's something they've since learned to repeat, as shown in HGSS (cameo extravaganza!) and, to a lesser extent, in B/W. (Cynthia and Looker are the only two coming to mind right now, but I feel like I know I saw at least one other person ...) (Plus B/W did a good job of having in-generation cameos by having the gym leaders constantly show up during the story to do things with you. That was good.)

Could go on, but I think I've made a good case for Gen 2 deserving the vote.

But I'd like to repeat that I'm only making this vote because it seems like we're all voting now for generations besides 1. If that's not the case, and other people are still including Gen 1 in their ballots when voting, then my vote definitely remains behind Gen 1. I could write a big post explaining why, but I think I did a good enough job last time.

You bring up good points Talon, I sometimes forget that Gen 2 brough breeding, hold items, two types, and pre-evos and new evos.
Good gen overall, maybe more influential than Gen 3, I'm undecided.

Gen 2 for me, since it was the first generation I got to play. Talon brings up a lot of reasons why it should also be the most impactive after gen 1.

After Gen 2 I'd have to say gen 3 with natures, abilities, and Gardevoir.

Gen II. Changed a lot of things. The introduction of dawn/day/night, genders and breeding, 100 new Pokemon (the first ever extra batch, and the little teases with new ones such as Togepi, Snubull, and "Pikablu" Marrill, along with others like Bellosom and Ledyba), the day and week system, special events (like Lapras on Fridays and Bug Catching contests), hold items, roaming legendary Pokemon (and of course the surprise the player got when he/she learned they were going to Kanto and exploring it again)... I mean, so much changed or was added for the better. By far the biggest impact in Pokemon aside from the first gen, which introduced everything in the first place.
