also has a Kanto team of all-event Pokémon once he heads off to the Orange Islands and acquires Lapras (replacing Pidgeot), so it's hard to argue this position one way or another. Because the teams are pretty much equal (species-wise, not stage-wise), anyone can argue just as strongly for "lol anime team" as they can for "lol one-of's team."
Also, keep in mind that the original team had Espeon in place of Lapras. This fact could be used to solidify the event-mon theory for GSC, but it can just as easily be used to solidify the anime-mon theory once you make the journey over to HGSS. After all, switching out one event-mon for another doesn't make much sense,
especially not when you're removing one unique type from the team (Psychic) and replacing it with one not-unique type (Water). Also, even if Espeon's moveset kinda sucks, it's still better geared towards raw offense than Lapras is: and there's no denying that HGSS's Red's team is more aggressive and less strategic/stall/setup-ish than GSC's attempted to be. So again, why the switch? It makes the most sense when you consider that they decided that the almost-Ash's anime team would
be Ash's anime team with just that one switch, ignoring (once again) differences in the stage of evolution of the various species.
