In your opinion, what's the best Gen IV game?

Platinum.

I like the untampered story of Diamond and Pearl better than Platinum's. I think as far as goodies, gameplay, and overall satisfaction are concerned it's hard to top the Gen2 remakes (if you lump those in with Gen4), but otherwise I'd say I like D/P over Pt.

Whichever generation game that introduced pre-evo's or evolutions for tons of pre-existing Pokemon was the worst, in my view. Not only is the idea dumb, the designs are almost universally ugly.

I kinda like evolutions of existing Pokemon and Babies.

I mean, sure, you have fuglies like Electivire, but hey, not all of them are that bad. See: Porygon line.

It's refreshing to get away from that for once though. I'm surprisingly happy with Gen V overall.

But uh. That's off-topic.

I liked HGSS though I've never finished it. Got bored after the E4.

I actually beat Red in HG/SS. The first time I faced him, I was very underleveled and he wrecked me and out-classed me, both at the same time. Red is very tough to counter.

I never understood the purpose to the baby Pokemon mechanic. If it was meant to make single evolution base Pokemon more balanced/harder to obtain, why do they level up so quickly?

Oh, so it was Pokemon Snap?
Baby pokemon were made so they can get other level-up and egg moves. Most of them suck but yeah.

Baby pokemon are cute, but that's it. Pichu is the cutest one that I have gotten from TRU. I missed out on getting Ash's pikachu from tru. =/

For shame.
Never really got into D/P. Heart Gold is my favorite of the gen.

Is he harder on HGSS? I beat him with a mono-water team level 46-48 on crystal.

Seeing as Diamond is the only gen iv game I've actually finished (despite owning Heart Gold and borrowing Platinum), I'll go with that.

I tried to play Heart Gold, but for some reason I still prefer playing the old crystal.

He is a lot harder on HGSS. I think his guys are all 70-80 if I remember right.

The internal battery in my Gold died, so Crystal is what I have from that gen.

EDIT the first: 73-81, sorry. They are somewhat higher in HGSS, I see, but as I regularly beat him in crystal with teams in the 45-55 range, 20-30 levels below him, is he really that much more of a challenge in HGSS? The only trainers I've encountered in games who weren't complete wank are Whitney and Ghetsis thus far.

Red has a level 88 Pikachu. O_O

But, he is harder. He also has a Lapras on his team, to mimic Ash.

The AI for Red in HGSS is smarter than that in GSC. They give the Pokémon good movesets that they use competently. For example, compare:

GSC:
Venusaur @ ----
Sunny Day
Giga Drain
Synthesis
Solarbeam

HGSS:
Venusaur @ ----
Sleep Powder
Giga Drain
Sludge Bomb
Frenzy Plant

In one, they were trying to showcase the power of the (then-brand-new) Sunny Day alongside the (then) most powerful Grass-type move around. But the moveset was pretty weak overall. The offense was purely Grass, meaning you sent out your Fire/Flying Pokémon of choice and it was gg, Venusaur. While that's still probably the case even in HGSS , at least Venusaur has a fighting chance. Now he can use Frenzy Plant (which, despite its obvious pitfall of forcing the user to skip their next turn, has the benefit of immediate access to a 150-power STAB move) and for things which resist grass he's got Sludge Bomb, making good use of his other STAB. And nothing spells "crippling" quite like sleep does.

For another example of a drastic change, just look at Snorlax. I'd say that old Snorlax's moveset wasn't that bad -- hell, it's almost what was the common moveset -- back in the heyday of GSC. But one thing you'll notice is that it's powerless against ghosts. That's one thing you'll immediately notice the new Snorlax rectifies. In fact, all around the new Snorlax swaps out a tanking strategy (something he could have pulled off back in Gen 2 back when 4HKOs were commonplace, not 2HKOs!) for something decidedly more out-of-the-gate, ready-to-roll offensive.

Yeah. Take a second look at the two Red's teams' movesets, Concept. I think you'll see why people insist that HGSS Red is a much-welcome improvement over the already epic GSC-era counterpart.

That's only a seven level improvement, compared to my regular 20-30 level deficit when I fight him it's pretty small.

Fair enough. I should actually get around playing HG further than Whitney at some point if it now contains the third trainer ever in a pokemon game not to be complete wank. Still prefer crystal for some strange reason though gogo nostalgia.

EDIT the first: I think a Nuzlocke maybe.

I know, but in HG/SS, every single one of Red's pokemon is in the high 80's. His Snorlax is a bitch to take down.

I think I killed Pikachu with Elekid (Lv.55ish) then sent in my Snorlax (from Lavender Town) against Venusaur and spammed X-Items and Hyper Potions. Yeah, you can beat the main game with a team of baby Pokemon, but Red is shit hard.

No, it's not to mimic Ash. Red has a team of all 'event' pokemon from R/B/FR/LG.

3 Starters
One of the two Snorlax (notice G/S/HG/SS only has one present)
Lapras (Obtained from Silph Co Employee)
Pikachu (LolPokemon'sMascot)

Also, Platinum. I liked DP's story, but it had some holes in it. In Pt, Cyrus was a lot better prepared, and seemed like more of a threat. And it gets bonus points for scaring me. Dude. Giratina cut off Cyrus IN THE MIDDLE OF A TEXT BUBBLE. I was used to 'Nothing will happen until you press A'. The Giratina goes and interrupts Cyrus.
