Iwata asks: HeartGold / SoulSilver (laughs)

Interesting stuffs as usual! Never knew they were working on the original games for 6 years, the reason for Mews inclusions, Iwata being a code porting genius and so on! |

It was shit. ABL didn't even play it all the way through, it was the worst gen of new Pokemon and it was plainly boring. I've played through the whole thing only two times it was so bad, and the second time was just so I could do battle frontier. It even had the worst rivals of any of the games. Just bad.

I was thinking today why I didn't like RuSa so here's some general reasons why:
1) Linear Yeah yeah all Pokemon games are linear as shit. It's not a sandbox game. But if you look back to RBY.. you could actually go around and do what you wanted. Fly/Surf arn't too hard to get, you could easily skip towns and go back later, silph co. needed to be dealt with eventually but you can take your time. GSC had a little bit of it but more obviously after you beat E4. Then you look at RuSa and it's pretty much completely linear (or at least what I remember of it). I want to feel like I'm actually exploring, not just going down a straight line. 2) Terrible maps Large grass so you can't bike? Check. Half the game being water areas, check. But mostly that second one is what sucks the most. Also, with the above point the whole game is just anti-exploratory. Lots of drop offs everywhere making you have to go a certain way. Then again it was years since I played so maybe I forgot. 3) Terrible Pokemon They're all pretty bad, let's face it. The starters are bad, the beginning Pokemon are bad, the beginning bugs are bad, etc etc. For this gen I always had the hardest time finding Pokemon I really liked to use when I play. The only real electric you get early on is electrike, fire is torkoal, etc etc. Also around half the Pokemon in RuSa are water types or so. The legends kind of suck too. Etc etc. 4) Missing Pokemon Years ago this would be number one. It was the biggest reason why I hated RuSa so much. You introduce 250 Pokemon, then make a brand new Pokemon game not featuring most of them. What the shit? And it's like, we still keep zubat and geodude, but no gengar or eevee or chansey etc. Theres probably more but I forgot. |

>The starters are bad[...]
Mudkip says otherwise :p Aside from that though, it was the suck. Rayquaza's tower with the lame pitfalls was the worlds most annoying dungeon. Find Feebas was the most retarded thing. Only like 4 cells in an ENTIRE RIVER. Tall Grass >.>; I liked Secret Bases in RuSaEm, but they obviously nerfed it in the newer games. I guess it was too good to let people transfer data and battle their friend's team for massive EXP/EVs/Money was just too good. |

Ok ok. Secret Bases was the only thing in RuSa I really liked. Forgot about that one, that shit was pimp.

You left out "You can bring Pokémon from your previous games to your current game" in your list of pros for D/P, Zora. That one initial fact soured me on Ru/Sa so much that I think they were working from too deep a deficit to come out of in the first place. The fact that they produced such miserable abortions of Pokémon like Chimecho, Spinda, Feebas, Nosepass, Gulpin and many more make the absence of vastly superior G/S/C era Pokémon stand out even more.

Milotic was a good Pokemon in Gen3, but Gen4 gave it a swift kick in the tail due to the physical/special change. It was quite unique that Feebas evolved through use of Beauty. But it was quite annoying for obvious reasons.
But yes, not getting access to GSC Pokemon was a major turn off for like almost everyone. We got RBY Pokemon, but RuSa couldn't let us get GSC? I understand that there were a lot of major changes (i.e. how Shinies are determined, maximum IVs, maximum EVs, etc.), but it was pretty heartbreaking. |

I liked RSE mainly because it was my first set of games in the franchise, I didn't play RBY/GSC until afterward. Therefore the whole backward trading thing wasn't really a big deal for me. In general though GSC was my favorite gen, I'm pretty pumped for the remake though I'm a little worried I won't have time to play it.

How'd this turn into another RSE debate when like Kuno said it wasn't even mentioned in the interview?? I loved those games very much they just clicked with me. Nostalgia nuts an other peoples hated 'em for their own reasons but w/e thats not really the point of this thread! >_>;
Besides in a few years time when they post an "Iwata Asks: RedRuby & BlueSapphire" the love'll be poured on then! Which brings to mind one thing: FrLg - wireless adapter HgSs - pokéwalker RrBs - ??? Will all remakes come with some extra fancy gadgets? In the interview it seemed like they really wanted to give good incentive for people ta pick up each set of remakes almost as if they wouldn't have sold as well without 'em? |

They probably want to give extra incentive for avid fans.
In either case, they want to give us as much as then can when they release something, at least that's what I got from the interview. I'm not the biggest on the re-releases of games, mainly because it just delays the course for the next generation! I still think their biggest challenge is Wifi and making it more accessible to get legendaries, etc. I know they'll do free Gamestop giveaways and such but that's such a ripoff when they have the Wifi gifting, stupid promotions... |

I personally think almost ALL legends suck. They're all overpowered Psychics and Dragons. Adding more Mew clones in DPPt didn't help.

This is an actual transcript from the board meeting in which they designed the DP Legends.
"OK. I have a genius plan! What if we make all of the minor trio the same type?" "You mean like have a Trio of legendary Bugs to make up for the absence of any Bug legends in the previous three generations?" "No. They're all Psychic." "Brilliant!" PS: CardinalRubySkySapphire will have a Rumble Pack.
