MetalGardevoir was a pretty great spambot until he got all into LOTR and started being a little bitch.

That one that posted links to "hot European porn" in the ASB section on Serebii.

There was one on Serebii a while back ago (maybe like 4-5 years ago or something) where his entire post was like "serebii sex" over and over again. It was a pretty big post and this is memorable to me for some reason.

I didn't even notice the user. Coolz8 PMed me about it and I banned him. I usually leave em alone until they post. They usually don't because of our 10 post dealy. Of course sometimes they try to post broken HTML links and that gets through...
Spambot stories? I remember Inktomi bots annoying the shit out of me.. but that was ages ago and they never really posted. Just lurked on every possible thread all day every day. I might have forgotten some interesting stuff. Basically most of them love putting the word "Man" as their Biography. |

I made an account for an April Fools Day back in 2004 or 2005 and posed as an Inktomi Spider, and then proceeded to spam the shit out of the forums. And then Talon gave me a one day ban for it (but he has no recollection of this event). Deservedly, too. What a dumbass fucking thing to do. If it were me, I probably would have kept the little twat who did that permabanned.

This doesn't surprise me. I tried looking in old PMs for the conversation, but couldn't find it. I think we last talked about it on Duel Network's PM system, but I can't be sure. Oh well.

A lot of the stuff that happened from 2002-2007 exists only in the vivid memory of some people. Like, I remember at some point I took to the Debate forum like unownmew did to same sex marriage, but the only specific debate I remember was an argument with Talon over the Holy Roman Empire. Heck, I remember the two avatars he had back then more clearly than what I did!
The only stuff I have from 2000 are files that Chaos saved on her website. ... The only spambot story I have is where one sent me an IM on AIM, but I didn't immediately recognize that person as a bot and ended up bantering with "her" for a while. She kept trying to entice be with cyber, and to sign up for more, but I wouldn't bite.

I've met a few on chat sites, when I've done chat sites. Well, only really one site, but it doesn't support chat any more.
I get a few on my Yahoo occasionally, but I ignore them and they go away. |

Back when some friends on Serebii forced me to get Yahoo chat service sonwe could talk outside SPPf, I had a few run-ins with some pretty hilarious bots. One tried to sell me a recliner, no matter how much I talked about cake. Another solicited me for sex and wouldn't stop even when I stopped giving coherent answers. Probably my two favorite bots I've ever talkes to.

There was also that time when Talon tried to talk to the spammer/bot and try to convince them the errors of their ways. |

Welcome to UPN! Where spambots get spammed!
During my days of running a forum I realised that captchas don't do anything but annoy real humans who want to sign up. So I rewrote the registration page to feature a few CSS-hidden form fields. If you put anything in the form, you would be redirected to an error page instead of being registered. Of course, since they were hidden, the only way to put anything in those fields was to use a bot, and most spambots fill out every field. This cut down spambot registrations from at least one a day to maybe one a month. Also adding nofollow to profile homepage links makes it so that those dumb SEO spammers get nothing for their efforts.

Serebii seems to have been picked for a targeted assault. I've reported about 10 spam bots in a week. Many of them Vietnamese, for some reason.

Same, except a bunch more. I scrolled down to the bottom of the forums on December 12th, and saw that a bunch of random letters random numbers accounts all had 12/12/90 birthdays. There were about a hundred of 'em, and more keep coming.
