Why do so many people hate Gen IV
I have heard a lot of flaming about Gen IV and frankly i dont know why. I mean Gen IV has amazing games and inventive pokemon, it also gave evolutions for pkmon who desperatly needed em (mismagious, murkrow etc) and yet i hear a lot of flaming about it, why?

Dunno. You'll hear a lot of flaming about any generation though. Every one of the five generations has a percent of the fanbase who believe it to be the single worst generation of the lot. There are a lot of reasons to dislike any generation but the funny thing about fans and their diverse opinions is that different fans can cite the exact same reasons for hating different generations.
Like, I can say that Gen 2 was my least favorite generation to date because of reasons like:
Someone else can look at that list and do two things with it:
In fact, it happens all the goddamn time. One fan's terrible map is another fan's mediocre map is another fan's awesome map. Same exact thing for the new creatures, changes to the gameplay mechanics, and so on.

Gen 4 has its good and bad points. The Pokemon, music and plot was pretty meh for me but wifi battling/trading gave their games far more replay value than anything Gen 3 and below in which I pretty much have to restart as soon as I beat the E4. At the moment though Gen 4 is plagued with being neither nostalgic nor fresh/brand new.

Gen 4 was better than Gen 3, but I have nostalgia goggles for the first gen so I can't really make any fair comparisons beyond that.

See, I dunno about that, emp. Whether a game's nostalgic or not entirely depends upon how much you found certain aspects of it to be memorable. For me, one of the best things about Gen 4 was the competent, well-meaning, sympathizable villain. He wasn't pointlessly evil like Giovanni nor was he stupidly evil like Team Rocket 2. He wasn't a petty man-child caught within a never-ending dickwaving fight like Archie and Maxie were in Gen 3, either. Here was a guy who had a vaguely hinted at childhood, one which led to him becoming a smart, powerful guy who felt the world as it exists is not good enough -- "We can do better! I can do better ..." -- and he decided to realize his ambitious dreams. The revelation that Cyrus is your archenemy may not have surprised most of us, but I still think of it as a "surprise" moment in the game that is very memorable. I put myself into the (stupid and naive ) hero's shoes. And I imagine the hurt that the hero must have felt when he discovered that this guy he looked up to, this stranger who was always showing up in strange places and helping him out of tough spots, this really nice guy ........... is the one causing all of the stuff he, the hero, is trying to stop. That, to me, was mega-memorable.
I could keep going on about Cyrus , so let's list some other memorable things about Sinnoh ...
Even worse are Gym Leader names. I know all of the Kanto ones right off the top of my head, no need to pause for thought. The Johto ones, likewise. The Hoenn ones, I have to pause for. Not sure I could get them all ... nah, just did. But the Gen 4 ones I've got to really sit there and think. "Roark's dad's name was ................................. Angus?" hahaha Nah, I know it isn't Angus, but I'm totally mindblanking. Or like the ice gym leader. I can see her with her thin ponytails and her blue-and-white dress, but ... I can't remember her name right now. I'll probably get it eventually, but the fact that I have to sit here like Winnie-the-Pooh and "think, think, think!" tells all, I think.

Maybe it's just me, but I can list the GLs from every gen but 3 from memory. And even with 3, I do pretty good until I get to the E4 (Um... Sidney, Pheobe... Oh, Glacida... Drake and Steven/Wallace). But that likely shows how little of a life I have. >_> |

You sayin' I like dudes?

Candice, Kin. And Glacia, xfd.
And after reading this thread, I'm going to try quite hard next time around to block out spoilers about anything - I've seen all the designs and typings this gen, would rather go for that uninitiated look at the next series of games. |

Pardon the Harry Potter, but does this mean Hoenn = Generation IV, while FR/LG (remakes of G1) = Generation III?

No. Hoenn = Gen 3. FR/LG are remakes of Gen 1.
Sinnoh is Gen 4. |

Yeah, he keeps bringing up FrLg as part of Gen 3 and I'd never see it that way myself. Sure, they came out during the time that Gen 3 was the current gen, but they're remakes of Gen 1 titles. Thus, they are Gen 1 titles in a sense. If the question is, "When did you start playing?" and you answer "My first game was Fire Red," then I'd say you started playing during Gen 3. But if the question is, "Is FireRed a Gen1 game or a Gen3 game?", I'd feel inclined to say Gen 1. I dunno, it's weird.
Look at it this way: if somebody remade Final Fantasy 7 tomorrow, would you start calling the remake Final Fantasy 15 since the last title that came out was 14? Or would you call it Final Fantasy 7 even though it doesn't visually look identical to the original FF7? I think we both know what everyone'd say and do. I feel the same way about FrLg being Gen 1 (even if they went on sale amidst Gen 3 titles) and HGSS being Gen 2 (even if they went on sale after the last of the Gen 4 titles). This is why it's weird. Obviously someone who starts with Fire Red isn't going to be compared with somebody who started with the original Red. One came out in 1998, the other in 2004. That's six years' difference. But ... it just doesn't feel right to refer to FrLg as "Gen 3." Gen 3 means Hoenn. Period.

Technically, it's considered Gen III (by Bulbapedia standards, for example), but it's obviously a remake of a Gen I game, so it fits under that umbrella in a way too.
I mean, it really boils down to semantics, but if you started with FRLG, like Talon said, I'd say you came to the series in the time of Gen III, but if you refer to the progress in the series in general, Gen III = Hoeen. |
