Picked Froakie - I'll agree with Loki and Kairne that Chespin's design works better than the others, but Froakie's bubble-glasses and quizzical side-glance won my favor. And it'd be awesome if Zora's idea came true.

Froakie, and Hana pretty much nailed the reasons why. The way he moves his limbs in the trailer and that slappy-attack also suggests to me that his evolutions will be pretty limber and groovy.
Fennekin and Chespin tie for second place. Used to like the Firefox a lot more but that was only until I found out what Chespin actually was. Evolution predictions Chespin Final Form is a gigantic hedgehog-tank quadraped with a cactus growing out of its back. Mid stage looks like this: Spoiler: show Froakie Mid-stage evo stands upright and has greatly extended arms and legs, as well as a less cartoony face. The bubbles seperate, forming two clumps around the neck and the hips. Final form is extremely muscular with a squareish face and mandatory angry eyes. The bubbles transform into curly hair, a ruff and puffy Shakespearean breeches. Fennekin As Fennekin evolves its body gets longer and longer. Its final evolution is based on a dachsund and is the longest pokemon to date, at over 50 feet.

Well, it's a dilemma for me. Starter design alone, it'd easily be Fennekin (so, as I plan on avoiding spoilers, it's likely to be my choice). Say what you like about the "unnatural" aspects, it's still cool. Problem with it is Ninetales's existence. I don't want to be stuck playing with Ninetales 2.0. And if it stands on 2 legs ever I may very well be driven to my first "sternly worded letter" to a large organisation.
Chespin, on the other hand, appears to have no such problem. It could turn utterly horrific (and I get the feeling it will), and Chespin itself is kind of unimpressive IMO (though it's growing on me as I examine it), but I'm interested to see how the evos turn out regardless. Don't get me started on Froakie. We have Politoed. We have Seismitoad. Both are superior in design. Froakie evos will have to be brilliant for me to seriously consider it. I've seen one or two fake evos that look great, but I saw fake evos for Tepig that were great. We got Emboar. |

It is sad when your design is said to be worse than Seismitoad, which is one of Gen V's black sheep along with Stunfisk and Druddigon's head(the rest of it is cool.)
I am definitely going with Fennekin. I could see it going Fire/Dark because it would be nocturnal(based on its design), or Fire/Ground because of desert. Froakie is not that bad, but Poliwrath is so goddamn amazing it does not even compare. I don't like Chespin. It looks like a Grass-typed Dewott. And I did not like Oshawott or Dewott. Samurott is the only cool one.

I'm here on behalf of the International Association for the Advancement of Stunfisks, blaze. I'm sorry to inform you that the board unanimously agrees that you have bad taste.
As much as I hate to say it, Chespin is starting to grow on me as well. Still sticking with Fennekin though.

You don't speak for me! And I don't think you speak for the majority of the board either! When Stunfisk's design was first leaked (alongside Shelmet's), rumor had it that they were legendaries. They looked SO FAKE that pretty much everyone here on UPN laughed them off as obvious fakemon. I remember the daze when I found out they were real. Could not believe it. Both of their designs are just so bad.
Here, I'll try and see if I can find the discussion since, iirc, the images leaked alongside the Japanese names. So I'll try looking for Maggyo. brb Okay, back. And completely empty-handed. Couldn't find it by name, and didn't see it listed in any if the Love/Hate lists immediately prior to the games' launch. Maybe some other time.

I, too, subscribe to the International Association for the Advancement of Stunfisk. It's a cool Pokémon. Then again, Oshawott and Dewott are simply amazing, and nothing is wrong with Druggy's head, either. Seismitoad, totally agreed, however.
Emboar is also awesome and you know it. |

I like Stunfisk and am on the board for the International Association for the Advancement of Stunfisk. You'll do kindly not to offend the Dark Lord.
I also like Seismitoad. |

I like having good taste and thus not being fond of either Pokemon.

On topic though, I'm really thinking I'll have to pick starter based on final evo and availability of that type in the region, if I decide to spoil myself that much. I have always gone with Fire first, just because it is usually hard to find good Fire Pokemon early on, when they're most useful. I never choose Grass, because Grass is an awful type. |

You're a bad man, Amras Brown. ()
I don't plan to spoil myself like that. Even if Fennekin's final stage is mono-Fire (blegh) while the others' are awesome type combos (like say Grass/Steel for Chespin's), and even if Fire-types are a dime a dozen in France, I'm going to have to go with her based purely on gut instinct, hope, and initial impressions alone. Besides: there's a certain level of Camusian hilarity should she evolve into a Fire/Fighting Renamon. I will laugh and cry at the same time.

I think it will probably be more inclined to be male than female in gender ratios. You know, like every real starter ever.
What if he turns out to be manly and badass with copious crotch-fur? |

Not really sure why Typhlosion gets to be on the good guys' team but Infernape doesn't. Last time I checked, weasels, ferrets, hedgehogs, porcupines, and the like -- all things which Typhlosion seems to draw from -- weren't bipedal. And last I checked, Infernape looked like, y'know, a bonafide simian. He can't help it that monkeys and apes are, by their very nature, anthropomorphic.
But sure, the general idea of the comic is appreciated. Also, apparently pebbles are quite pesky in The Walking Dead. No Renamon please. No Stoutland please.
