Under normal circumstances that is the case since they'd need 60 to break the filibuster, but:

"By using the so-called 'nuclear option,' the GOP can eliminate the filibuster and allow Gorsuch to be confirmed with 51 votes. And while there is some anxiety in the ranks about what would be a permanent overhaul to Senate procedure, the nominee's popularity with Republicans of almost all stripes and factions will make it that much more tempting. President Donald Trump, for one, has publicly encouraged McConnell to 'go for it.'"

I hope for a number of reasons that post was at least on some level satirical.

I'm basically quoting my militantly anti-illegal immigrant mother, so I can tell you no, stroke's no joke.

senate voted to let ISPs sell our browsing history to advertisers, as well as allowing other bullshit to happen. 50-48-2. Good lord. While I'm glad my state's reps had enough sense to vote nay, this still sucks ass.

On the bright side, think of all the fun things we're going to learn about the freaky shit Paul Ryan Googles in his spare time once people start buying ISP customer info and demasking it.

Also, I'm not sure how I feel about the AHCA vote for today getting putoff until (likely) next week due to the House Freedom Caucus being pissy that it's not shitty and harmful enough: only when providers have the freedom to sell us plans that don't actually cover the shit you want health insurance for will we truly be free.

Thank god I've been working to hide my traffic from my ISP. Although, given that Google is rapidly losing it customers who it tries to target with "destructive" ads, perhaps they should just leave me alone altogether!

Appears the vote has been rescheduled for sometime on Friday, so not too much of a delay. The White House/Trump have basically given the ultimatum that it's the AHCA or nothing, so it'll be interesting to see if that manages to swing the House, though that seems highly unlikely at this point.

1. Even if it doesn't pass, they'll still have plenty of ways to fuck over the ACA to make "Obummercare is going to explode any day now" a self-fulfilling prophecy

2. The entire vote is set up like an IRL comedy of errors, so I have a sinking feeling that there is a non-zero chance this might clear the House due to Republicans weighing the cost of crossing Trump and passing the buck to the Senate to make it their problem

So was this healthcare bill something cooked up by Trump, or the result of the Republicans' 3-year braincast?

The former is less funny than the latter.

It's the latter. Ryan the other top GOP reps cooked it up and brought it to Trump, who then backed it and decided to grace the bill with his Deal-Making Prowess™

And in true Trump fashion, he didn't actually know (or care to put much effort to know) what was in it:

Quote:
Filled with hope once again, Freedom Caucus members were once again promptly disappointed. This meeting was yet another "take one for the team" seminar. The atmosphere was friendly, and the president had the group laughing with irrelevant riffs and stories of negotiations past, but it became clear, as soon as he made the "little shit" comment, that no serious changes were going to be made, because the president didn't have sufficient command of the policy details to negotiate what would or would not be realistic for Ryan to shepherd through the House.

Through charm, force of personality and sheer intimidation, Trump did move some votes into the yes column. But GOP leaders were left wondering why he didn't do more—why he didn't send tweets, travel to congressional districts, put his famed dealmaking skills to work. The answer, to Republicans on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue, is obvious: Because he lacked familiarity with the legislation itself, and thought it was Ryan’s job to sell the specifics.
http://www.politico.com/story/2017/0...-future-236490

Quote:
For weeks Trump had seemed disinterested and disengaged from the specifics of the health care fight, both behind closed doors with his aides and at public rallies. Trump “just wanted to get something he could sign,” said one adviser who talks to him frequently. “He was over it.” He would often interrupt conversations on the law to talk about other issues, advisers and aides said.
And fuck it, one more:

Quote:
Shortly after House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) unveiled the Republican health-care plan on March 6, President Trump sat in the Oval Office and queried his advisers: “Is this really a good bill?”
That said they seemed to have started pushing the "collapse and replace" line regarding the ACA harder after it was clear the Ryancare/Trumpcare/RINOcare (depending on which right-wing media outlet you subscribe to) bill was going nowhere so there is a non-zero chance they use administrative tools to fuck with it and hope that the Democrats own the inevitable fallout.

Remember that it's billed as Republicare rather than Trumpcare. I really don't think this is something that he personally cares about very much, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was basically just given something the Republicans care about and told to care about it.

I'm far more interested in his tax plans - as I understand it, he plans to kill loopholes and institute a flat tax above certain brackets. I can definitely see this going through even a Republican-controlled Congress as it removes the tax burden on the poor and places it on the mantle of the rich and on multinationals (he plans to kill this, too).

Also, important note: Republicans are defunding orgs like Planned Parenthood and Medicare precisely BECAUSE they want the ordinary people to put their time and money into those orgs. They don't want to use tax dollars for that. When you volunteer your resources to PP or LGBT-friendly shelters, you are doing what the Republicans believe is right - supporting causes you personally believe in and leaving the government out of it.

Like, it's great that people are supporting these shelters, charities, orgs, etc. but let's not pretend this is a victory for democrats. It's pretty starkly a victory for Trump that this is happening.

I've literally never heard it called Republicare. I've heard it call Trumpcare more times than I can count. Whether it's accurate to call it Trumpcare or not doesn't really matter- people have attached Trump's name to it, so in the memory of the public the AHCA will be something tied closely to Trump, if not as closely as it is to Ryan.

I haven't seen a big push to name it anything, actually. People pushed for Trumpcare, but only before Trump was elected. News outlets have been calling it "the GOP's health care bill."

It's better for you all to call it Republicare anyway, if it goes south (which it will) you probably want it to take the entire Republican Party down with it, rather than just Trump.
