Yooka-Laylee
Kickstarter Yooka-Laylee is a new 3D Platformer by Playtonic Games that is heavily inspired by the Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong series. Hailed as a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie series, the original goal of the kickstarter was blown right through on the first day, and has currently generated over Ł1,482,572 ($1663595 USD). Not only that, but it features many developers from Banjo-Kazooie and the old Donkey Kong series, including the voice of Banjo and Kazooie himself, Chris Sutherland. As it stands, Yooka-Laylee is set to release on every major console as well as PC. Playtonic Games has stated they're trying to keep the spirit of the old platformers while also listening heavily to fan suggestions in order to produce the best 3d platformer possible. Needless to say, many old school fans of Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong are hyped. I have yet to play a Banjo-Kazooie game (don't shoot me pls) and I'm excited for it. So for fans of the Banjo-Kazooie series or people new to 3D platforming in general, this is an exciting prospect. What do you all think? What would you like to see?

Hi I am currently sat three feet from a Nintendo 64 with Banjo-Kazooie sticking out. I dropped Ł170 on the Kickstarter for this and I regret nothing.

I'm really excited for this game! Particularly interested in the soundtrack, since the Banjo Kazooie series has some KICKIN TUNES and hopefully Yooka Laylee's will be just as good!

Having heard some of the tracks already they're definitely giving me the same vibe as B-K/B-T/DK64. Get hype.

I'm super excited for this (and super happy it's getting a PC release). I haven't pledged yet, but I probably will by the time it closes.

Pretty hyped for this, likely won't be able to get it, but a huuuuuge fan of DK64, BT and BK.

Alright looking at the trailer I'm a bit more excited. I only hope that the different powers and stuff are things you can access at anytime rather than having to rely on outside things like the level itself. Every power shouldn't amount to a Mumbo transformation.

The game releases soon and the first reviews are up. Most scores seem to be concentrated between a 55/100 and an 80/100. Metacritic calculates the average at a 72. The most common criticism appears to be, "The game is faithful to the B-K formula -- too faithful." Fans of Banjo-Kazooie claim that this criticism comes from people for whom Yooka-Laylee was never meant. Critics and their supporters claim that it's not that: it's just that people wanted Yooka-Laylee to be to 3-D platformers what The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was to Zelda games.
Other technical aspects earning criticism are the camera and a shooting mode the game sometimes requires you to use. Praise for the game generally seems to be for its sense of humor, its bright and colorful visuals, and its relatively open world.

Apparently the Xbox One version in particular also suffers from some technical hiccups including frequent frame drops and stutter.

I feel like this game was meant to please a pretty core audience of 90's platformer junkies so it's not particularly surprising the appeal is not all that universal.

I think the problem is that a lot of people, such as myself, were looking for Y-L to reinvent the platforming genre while keeping it true to its roots (as Talon said), not make a modern day late-90s homage. A lot of people wanted that, which is fine, but a lot of people didn't, too. A classic case of damned if you do, damned if you don't.
I think it will be a fun game regardless, but with how dull the platforming genre has gotten outside of a small handful of games (mostly Mario), it's hard to be that excited for it, especially as someone who isn't full of Banjo-Kazooie-Tooie-Rare-game nostalgia. Regardless, I hope people enjoy it. Regardless of everything I just said, it's still really nice to have a game like this around in this day and age of video games, and it's nice to see the old Rare team making the games they want to make. |

I think I'm a bit more disappointed in Team 17 as opposed to Playtonic to be honest. Both QA and bug testing as well as the PS4/Xbox One ports of the game were to be handled by Team 17, as Playtonic made mention of when they first partnered with them for publishing the game in 2015, which seems to be where the main technical issues lie. Obviously we have yet to see how the Switch version ends up since we don't even have a release date for it, but it appears the technical issues are virtually nonexistent on PC (at least, a standard gaming PC).
In terms of the actual gameplay, it doesn't seem to step too far away from Banjo-Kazooie but it does certainly try some new things and try to fix the formula to some extent, just probably not to the extent people had been hoping. I still can't wait to get my hands on the game and try it for myself and I'll go more into depth on it at that point, especially from my perspective as a day 1 backer. |

Double post but it appears the day 1 patch will help a lot with quite a few of the problem areas on console and just cut down on technical issues in general, as some of the reviewers with the game have been able to test it out already. Definitely a good thing to see/hear lol
