I have the books for Garfield In The Rough, Garfield Gets A Life and Here Comes Garfield (as well as some others like the notorious Garfield insult book). I don't have much experience with the TV specials or movies, but I watched the Garfield And Friends Saturday morning cartoon. Of course I remember Lorenzo Music's voice! They would also have segments of U.S. Acres, and my brother and I would be like, "OH NO, NOT THE DAMN FARM ANIMALS AGAIN! Put Garfield back on!"

Yeah, that Wikipedia summary makes Garfield look really bad in Garfield On The Town. His family home is attacked by a gang of cats, his family fights as he runs away and hides like a coward. his grandfather kicks him out of the house, his mom says, "Oh don't worry about it Garfield, you have it way easier at your home than here anyway" and he slinks away in shame. Damn, lol. I'll stick with the book version!

Last strip in an arc where Garfield finds a cat named Ed who was raised by squirrels. Garfield misses her

Garfield thread COMING SOON! I need to gather some more strips.

I was wondering why Davis and his Paws team had gone to the painstaking effort to colorize all of the old black and white comics. After all, only the Sunday strips were ever in color: the Monday thru Saturday strips were originally black and white! It turns out that ...

Quote:
Paws, Inc. was founded in 1981 by Jim Davis to support the Garfield comic strip and its licensing. It is located in Muncie, Indiana and has a staff of nearly 50 artists and licensing administrators. In 1994, the company purchased all rights to the Garfield comic strips from 1978 to 1993 from United Feature Syndicate. However, the original black and white daily strips and original color Sunday strips remain copyrighted to United Feature Syndicate. The full color daily strips and recolored Sunday strips are copyrighted to Paws as they are considered a different product. Though rights to the strip remain with Paws, Inc., it is currently distributed by Universal Press Syndicate.
So basically, Davis had a contractual agreement with a firm named United Feature Syndicate, or UFS, and he sought to get out of that agreement around the time he created his own firm called Paws, Inc. Well, obviously UFS didn't want to see such a juicy source of revenue go away, so they fought Davis on this; and while Davis ended up winning the rights to "the strips" as they exist conceptually, he didn't win the rights to "the strips" as they exist as templates: he could legally claim ownership over the jokes, dialogue bubbles, characters, and so on, but I guess the pixel-for-pixel specifics of the originals were deemed to still be joint property of UFS. So what did Davis and Paws do? Well, apparently they went back and colorized all of the B&W strips and altered the color palettes on all of the Sunday strips. I guess (for whatever craaaaaaazy reason! ) this is enough to satisfy the U.S. legal system. "No, you may not reproduce the originals without paying royalties to UFS. Yes, you may totally reproduce colored alterations of the originals and not give UFS a dime. Though only because the Court recognizes you as the rightful owner of the strips." So strange. ^^;

The consequence of all of this for the fans? Beautiful color versions of all your old favorites! Yay!

Well I don't mean to steal any from you but I picked up from where I left off and just reached this one from September of '84. As a man with a family history of male-pattern baldness who's noticed his own hairline receding, I related to Jon pretty well in the first two panels and thus Garfield's comment in the third panel completely blindsided me. Takes the comic in a totally different direction from what I was expecting. Slightly dark and devilish, I can just imagine Jim Davis delighting in drawing this one up, sort of like a man on a diet allowing himself an extra large slice of Devil's food cake.

And oh god, the next one's first panel is just as good! Seriously, if Davis had just done that single panel and nothing else, that would've been a surefire winner. Sometimes less is more.

Jon failed to mention his grandfather/father were Unites States Marines, and his brother a Buddhist monk.
