Yeah not the smartest person I've faced. Some of the people I face clearly have no idea what they are doing.

Your opponent has very limited awareness of the type effectiveness chart. o.O

Why Bug Buzz? What other moves did Venomoth have?

I don't remember exactly. I feel like I had a status or entry hazard move, Quiver Dance, Bug Buzz, and something else.

Venomoth usually runs Giga Drain, and with Tinted Lens Bug Buzz isn't all that bad of an option.

Quiver Dance is alright. I ran a Toxic Spikes variant that had some success (Venoshock OP) but there is just too much that ignores Toxic Spikes and a good quarter of them make it go away.
Surprisingly enough, I ended up having best results with Bug Buzz/[move, often Psychic or Sludge Bomb], Quiver Dance, and Sleep Powder. Easy set up. It isn't often your sweeper is also your phaser.

Maybe we should just discuss general Venomoth strategy?
Venomoth is cool guys. Don't use Giga Drain or Toxic Spikes, Venomoth isn't that good of a sweeper to make use of a fairly weak move and Toxic Spikes has much better users in Qwilfish and the Nidos.

Tinted Lens+Bug Buzz+Quiver Dance+Roost
After one QD Venomoth is ready to go, and with Tinted Lens all non effective moves get a 50% boost. Roost is roost. Coverage moves fill other spot(HP Fire?) |

Venomoth isn't a good sweeper though. His job is much better spent at passing those boosts to a more dedicated sweeper. The Nidos are my favorite target(HUGE coverage, Sheer Force etc), but any number of other special sweepers can do it better. Hell, pass it to Yanmega. If Venomoth was stronger, he would probably be UU period, not BL 2.

Ah, yes, almost forgot about Baton Pass. You gotta have that, too.

To put it in perspective:
+1 252 SpA Life Orb Venomoth Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 200 SpD Snorlax: 173-204 (37.52 - 44.25%) -- guaranteed 3HKO +1 252 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 200 SpD Snorlax: 216-255 (46.85 - 55.31%) -- 69.53% chance to 2HKO Venomoth isn't that good of a sweeper.

I do see your point on that. But, out of the available QD users, I'd say that it is one of the more usable/notable ones, aside from Volcarona.

Volcarona is an awesome Pokemon. It's a shame Stealth Rock exists. Without it, Volcarona would easily be like Scizor. I'd even reckon that Volcarona would be suspected without Stealth Rock. It's just that good. I remember a ton of people telling me to replace Morning Sun on my Bulky Volcarona set with Roost, but I never would. Even at half health, as many a Celebi151 would remember, Volcarona can stall out a Gengar by using Quiver Dance and Morning Sun.

Volcarona works extremely well in every type of weather. Sun? It's gets a nuketastic Fiery Dance. Sand? It beats pretty much every sand Pokemon in the game. Rain? It's got Giga Drain and Hurricane. Not to mention a seriously sick Bug Buzz. Hail? LOL.
Basically, a set of BB/FD/GD is only really countered by one Pokemon, and that's Heatran. And its not like Heatran being a counter stopped that "other" Bug type from eventually being bumped up. Again, if only SR didn't exist.

No, 'geet was asking why you run Morning Sun over Roost when Morning Sun is inferior in 3 out of 5 weather conditions (including neutral), superior in only one, and has inferior PP; when compared to Roost.

Well, because a good player can keep the right weather on the side of the field(I would be nuts to use Morning Sun without Sun on the field) plus the extra HP gain is what you need to make sure that Volcarona can survive many of the special attackers from half health. Roost may be more reliable on a regular party, but Morning Sun is better in Sun.
Which is where of course I used Volcarona.

So I'm trying out a team with Venomoth. I opted for Togekiss over Nidoqueen because of FlinchHax and personal preference.
http://play.pokemonshowdown.com/battle-uu-47560694 I suppose if I needed to I could BP to Azelf instead, but it doesn't have the bulk to pull it off. It would become a monster though, looking at it's base 115 speed and base 130 SpAtk |
