Get and Beat: Call of Duty Black Ops 2
Let me start by saying that, in reference to my distaste at other games being "CoD-ified" - I enjoy Call of Duty games, but I want Call of Duty to stay in Call of Duty. I do not very much appreciate other games mimicking some of it's aspects. Before I go any further, I've been debating with myself whether or not this was the darkest game I've ever played. I know that may sound silly, but a lot of the things seen in this campaign were just absolutely brutal and intense beyond almost anything I've seen in a game before. I feel silly for saying that, but there was just so much horrible, brutal imagery, hate, and disgust... anyway, while we once again have a mostly action-packed Michael Bay B-Movie plot going on, all of the aforementioned things do a frighteningly good job of making you bitterly hate the villain, and it grinds the gears even further when he is just out of your reach and getting away while announcing his title as the world's biggest douche all the time. Now, this game also did something interesting I didn't expect that other CoD games haven't done before in that there are almost always two different outcomes story wise to every campaign level. While the levels will remain the same, the plot will alter a bit each time, and there are two different endings in the game as well. While it's obviously nothing revolutionary, it's an interesting twist. Unfortunately for me, because I chose to play the game on Veteran difficulty for the first time, I had just about every bad outcome possible, which honestly may have been the catalyst for my even darker plot experience (but I can't say for certain). The other interesting part of the campaign was that to find out what unraveled the events of the future, you must go back to the 1980's for several missions and play as the protagonist from the first Black Ops game - the future protagonist's father. There are also several RTS type missions which are optional, but partly crucial to the story, too. Personally, I am terrible at RTS games, and I did horribly on these side missions to the point where I just couldn't beat them (although I suppose I should have just lowered the difficulty...). Oh, and - General Petraeus still being in charge of the CIA in 2025 is absolutely hilarious when you look at recent news. Graphically - the game is showing it's age. It's time for Activision to stop reusing the Modern Warfare engine over and over again in every game. It was once the pinnacle of graphical displays in gaming, but now it just feels lazy and rehashed. I doubt this will change for next year's inevitable iteration in Modern Warfare 4 (which, if the leaks and rumors are true, is a huge disappointment that they can't move on past the 'modern war' theme. How about you take a page out of Battlefield 2142's book or have Cawadooty: IN SPACE?). If you like fun and thrilling campaigns with some emotional plot twists that will make you audibly yell "Oh shit" over and over again while they're happening and can overlook some of the (all of the) ridiculousness in the game and over the top and sometimes cringe inducing stereotypes*, as well as a few annoying plot problems, I recommend the game's campaign. Also, if I hear 'cocksucker' as an insult one more time, I'm probably going to flip. *Light spoilers, but here's an example. Brits, amirite?

Super Mario 3D Land The usual Mario platformer. It was fun like always, though it was alot easier than I expected. Atleast it is easy outside of the damn shadow Mario episodes, then it turns into hell. Though it's not as fun as New Super Mario Brothers, and the platforming is kinda clunky. Code of Princess Eeeeh. The battles were kinda fun, but that's about it. The character art is bad, the story is crappy, and "kinda fun" doesn't really make me want to do the same thing over and over again. I guess I should have bought something else. Okamiden I liked this. Of course it's not as good as the original. However, I did kinda like the story more. I liked the development and stories behind Chibi's partners. Also it's freaking adorable. Though I'm not crazy how there's invisible walls in effing everything that's not a straight path. |

Get/Beat:
Okami HD Someone "borrowed" my original copy of Okami and moved away, and with a HD edition for PS3, I figured I might as well get the shiny new PS3 version since Okamiden gave me an urge to replay this title since I haven't touched Okami in years. First thing, the "I did kinda like the story more." thing I put in my last post was bullshit. I simply forgot the story of the original. After playing this, I realized Okamiden's story is actually a trainwreck that's seemingly written by someone who doesn't know that much about the original, or is just making shit up. God I feel like a fucking retard. I still think Okamiden's entertaining in its own right, but replaying the original really cast a huge shadow over it for me. Anyway, onto Okami itself. I can't believe I've forgotten so much about such a great game. I remember every damn detail about Zelda games, but forget this? What the hell? Where the game shined the most for me is probably the story. It's actually really well-written. There's a few open-ends and a couple of BS moments towards the end, but otherwise, it's fine. Of course the brushplay was nice, and the graphics/music were beautiful. My biggest issue would be the fact that the camera goes retarded in places. Seriously sometimes when I'm fighting a boss, for no reason at all, the camera just zooms up on my character, and I have to move around and waste time, risking a bad time score, just to be able to see my enemy. Also for whatever reason, this version killed the original ending. Not a big deal, but it's still weird. I wish I had my PS2 version so I could compare with the supposed "highly improved graphics". I'll probably replay FF7 now. It might not last long, since every time I try playing an older JRPG, I get bored out of my mind and quit. I used to love FF7, but nostalgia means shit to someone who looks at the past and spits at it! |

Can't speak to Rumble blast, but Devil survivor 2 is a solid game. If you're bad at time management, make sure you save a lot.

Get: Far Cry 3
The game is fun, the sound quality is garbage. I can't remember the last time I hear a game with sound quality this poor and terrible. It sounds worse than a 240p YouTube video and I don't know how to fix it.

Get: Persona 3 FES
Played a bit of this years ago at a friends, got given it in a secret santa just last week. Good stuff so far, although it is reminding me why I hate save points so much.

Yeah it does. Not sure why, but you can definitely tell. Hell, I only found out because the video I was watching had an annotation that said it sounded better with better resolution setting. And it was true.
>Persona 3 FES I have Persona 3 Portable and I really like it. They combined weird dating sim, RPG adventure, and crazy shoot yourself in the head magic oddly well. Also, it gets tedious at times. :x Got: Skyrim: Dragonborn Ride a dragon? Fuck yeah! |

So, I got a PS3 as an early Christmas present and picked up a couple of games.
Final Fantasy XIII So far it's been pretty good, I don't really care too much that it is incredibly linear, especially since the characters have been pretty well fleshed out so far. Also there are Australian characters, bloody Aussie characters, and poor Vanille has a pretty bad accent, which is hilarious because its the VA's natural accent. Crash Bandicoot Warped Pretty much bought this because my family and I used to spend so much time playing it. So far it has held up pretty well, with the exception of a couple of really shitty gimmick levels, looking at you bike and jet ski levels.

Played/beat:
Fortune Summoners: Secret of the Elemental Stone This was a surprisingly fun game. It's a little difficult in place, but doesn't feel fucking tedious, since most of the battles that are thrown at you go by pretty quickly, and if you die, you just have to change your tactics and try again (unlike Chantelise, you're taken to the room before you died), instead of the usual grinding your fucking head off. The story left a bunch of room for a sequel, but supposedly there will be none, so I had to play with a half done story, which is bullshit. Final Fantasy 7 I tried to play through this, but I just can't deal with older (that better?) RPGs that well. I can't deal with random battles. In newer stuff, I can atleast skip battles by avoiding the enemy sprites if I want to explore rather than grind. From what I've seen, the story itself is pretty good. It's just that in battle, everyone is basically the same. Just stick them all with materia and spam magic in boss battles. Legend of Zelda Windwaker So I finally got onto replaying this. It seems my save files stated my last save was in 2003. Yeesh. I remember my only problem with this being the long boat rides. Hopefully they won't bother me that much this time around. |

Get: Dark Souls, The Walking Dead
So after it surprisingly won Game of the Year at the VGAs, I decided to take a look into the game further after having ignored it properly since it's been out. My reason was because Telltale Games seems to have a knack for hyping up a game and then failing to deliver a satisfying experience. Jurassic Park was deemed a total letdown, and Back to the Future was just not at all fun (at least for me). But then there is this game. Now I'm not the greatest fan of The Walking Dead, as I've really not been able to get myself into the show past season one. I'll probably pick it back up at some point when I get bored, though. The game though, totally changes the way I view Point and Click adventure style games - but that's not the star here. The star here is the engrossing and emotional story surrounding well structured characters like Lee and Clementine, as well as their group of struggling survivors. I'm only on Episode 3, but I can already highly recommend this game to you. Simply put, it is fantastic and definitely GOTY material (although so far, I'm not sure it is one in my eyes). So to those holding back, I'd say put aside any differences you may have for Telltale Games or The Walking Dead TV Series and give this a shot. Buy the first episode, it's only $5. If you don't like it, don't play anymore - but if you do, $5 per episode is a pretty decent deal. As for Dark Souls, I finally got around to picking it up now that Dark Souls II has been formally announced and I loved Demons' Souls. I can't wait to see what fantastic new boss fights await. Beat: Far Cry 3 I have way too much to say about this game, so much that, in the coming days, I will be writing a formal review with my thoughts on the game and probably put it in its own thread. For now, though, to sum up my thoughts: Far Cry 3 may very well be the best game I've played this year - perhaps in the past two years at least (although the Halo fan in me wants to disagree, so we shall see!). It is utterly phenomenal. I wasn't even expecting this when going into the game, so I was blown away. More thoughts to come soon.

If anyone here is interested in playing The Walking Dead game, Episode 1 is available for free on Xbox Live. I don't know how long this deal will go for or if it's just for the day. I got mine and it's pretty rad.

Also ironman on classic does depend a bit on the game giving you a break: if you get an escort/recovery mission as your first council mission with jumpy rookies and Thin Men at their most dangerous, well, prepare for a circus of hillarity.
