VGC 2018 - Schedule and Prizes
Most of the details for VGC 2018 were posted by TPCi a couple of weeks ago, including the dates and locations of all Regional events in North America:
9/2/17 - 9/3/17 Fort Wayne, INas well as the prizes on offer for various placements per various attendance levels. Trainer Tower has put together an article summarizing most of these changes. Cutting to the chase: there's big money on the table for regionals this year. In the 2017 season as well as the 2018 season, the cap was $3,000 for 1st place. But in order for 1st place to get it, in 2017 they needed over 500 players to be in attendance for the Masters division. Even at the North American Internationals that Deo and I attended, there were only 250 entrants for Masters-level play. However, for the 2018 season, they've lowered this bar down to over 200 players. That means we're now a lot more likely to see the following cash prizes being handed out at each of these regionals: 1st place: either $3,000 or $2,000This is almost certainly going to go hand-in-hand with a spike in entry fees, but it's hard to complain with cash prizes that extend down to 8th place and don't realistically get any smaller than $250.

Oh man with bottle caps and stuff now it'll be much easier for everyone to have access to all the psuedo legends that normally dominate open dex VGC. VGC 17 and 18 have been really good times to get into VGC if you're looking for an opportunity to.
Also my closest regionals arent during winter exams like they normally are. Score!

Worlds 2018 has been announced for Nashville. If it's the same weekend next year, then I can't wait for the chance to go.

Oh man oh man I might want to actually get a look at this meta. But come on TPCi, when can we get a regional in Maryland!? the closest one to me (Roanoke) is cutting things awfully close datewise!

Yeah, the closest one for me is gonna be the one in Hartford, meaning that I'm gonna have about 2-3 weeks to decide on what deck I want to reintroduce myself to TCG with so I can get everything together in time for it. A bit too close for my liking, but it's the best I can do.

I'm not going to be able to manage to attend Ft. Wayne, sadly. Lots of different reasons, only one of which is that I still have yet to capture a single Tapu or Ultra Beast and that I still have yet to level to Level 50 anything I've hatched and EV trained. So ... it's looking like the rather far-away Memphis and St. Louis locations will be the two closest ones I can have any remotely realistic expectation of attending. Really, really hate that Indiana's tournament is held in the early fall every year, but meh, it is what it is. And besides: if late 2016 + early 2017 had been a different year for me, I probably would have been knee-deep in VGC 2017 and wouldn't mind it all that much that I get to lazily recycle my VGC 2017 team for a nearby Regionals. Perhaps I can have the same hope for VGC 2018, assuming it's a good format.
Not sure what their excuse is for not having an event within 30 minutes' driving distance of downtown Chicago, though. Nor why they apparently can't be bothered to have one in or around New York City. Hartford is 2.75 hours from NYC, while Ft. Wayne is Chicago's closest option at 3.2 hours. Seems strange. LA gets Costa Mesa (~1 hr away), but the two larger cities get nothing that near.

Yeah, that doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe the reason they've decided on Hartford is because they don't want to have 2 in the New England area (even though NY isn't really New England but close enough for TPC I guess). They've about split the distance between NYC and Boston with Hartford. But given that I'm going to Boston from Alabama, a 2 hour trek is a lot better than what I'd have to do if I wanted to go to a regional from home (6 hour drive to Memphis).

(Madison is actually a little closer at 2 and a half hours)
Might attend the one in Madison- I'll already be out of school so it shouldnt be too hard. Will probably depend just come down to how much I like the meta tbh |
