Wowz

I was digging through Chaos' archive of old UPN threads in the hope that maybe something of mine might have been captured...and sweet billy bongs, Chaos saved the thread where I introduced myself to UPN. As you can see, both Kuno and BPK were in that thread.

I'm "Shadow Rider", and this topic is proof that I actually was on a Jaxel board (which Talon doesn't remember) and that my registration month is February 2001. I'd always assumed it was August 2001, the date of the Chaka board. This means that despite my BMG association, I was only on BMG a mere 4 earlier than UPN.

No, although that was my only exposure to it. That was (I believe) the third and last incarnation of Jaxel's board.

It's like reading Roman graffiti, you'd think something like this is completely alien to the world of today, but then you notice some things that are hauntingly familiar.

"Phyrexian Hoppip", certainly a marriage of ideas only possible with the media available to children in such an era!

This makes me feel old.

Then again, I'm not sure if there's anything (short of becoming a demon) I could have done to not feel old. Even if I were a billionaire CEO I'd probably keep looking down 20 years into the future.

I think we all feel that way though, like I know it's been only 8 years for me but when I first started the whole Pokemon thing I wasn't even high school yet. Now I'm a senior in college. I think that part of it is that when we look back to the start we've all changed a lot as people and that makes it feel longer moreso than the raw number of years. And tbh I feel like it's so programmed into me at this point to immediately type "UPN" into my browser window that I can't envision a time where I don't do it, even if this website ends up dying.

Maybe I'm getting too philosophical while I procrastinate on my homework lol

You don't know what it's like yet. The biggest issue is the passage of time, which people only reference when they exclaim things like "It's been THIS long"?

Time flies much more quickly when you're older - both locally, and distantly - due to some physiological change in the brain that slows down your information gathering. This slowing of information processing is why it's harder to pick up things and maintain an attention to detail.

A good way of visualizing this is when you're a child, you perceive the world at 80 fps. Because you're absorbing more information, days, months and year seem longer. As you age that drops to maybe 75 fps and suddenly 60 fps once you hit 30+.

Everything from 2011-ish to me, doesn't seem that long ago despite the huge changes in the world. In spite of that, it's almost the same length of time from when I was born to when I started following Pokemon.

I've also heard this is because periods of time are relatively longer to how long you've lived. Like for example when you're in kindergarten a year seems like an eternity because you've only lived five years. So the entire year would be like 1/5th your lifespan. Now, a year is only 1/22nd of my lifespan so a year doesn't feel as long by comparison. It's interesting stuff.
