Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2

Picked this up on Sunday and I've been quite involved in it. The plot's as deep as ever (for a Pokemon game, that is) and a lot of the characters have more depth this time around.

I'm playing as a Cyndaquil (so glad it's not gender-exclusive!) with a Bulbasaur partner and I'm currently STUCK on the Amp Plains. D: Think I'll use an Escape Orb as soon as I get rescued again. >_>

Re: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2

Every time I die, I just turn off the [strike:3qxpuh7x]GameBoy[/strike:3qxpuh7x] DS Lite before it saves. (While it's still showing the info box that pops up when you lose your last team member.) I died I don't even know HOW many times when trying to do 8 missions in a row and always accomplishing 1-7 with ease but being 3HKO'd by the Machop from hell on the 8th floor. (I'm so accustomed from the later stages of the first game to doing 6+ missions per outing that doing anything less in the sequel feels alien to me!)

I got as far as, I think, about to be going to Amp Plains when I decided to put the DS in my closet along with the AC adapter for my modem (which is soon to be unplugged again >_>). I remember them mentioning that, anyway. Hmm ... trying to remember ... well, I know you're farther than me, so with no worries highlight what I write below and copy it into Notepad or something for legibility's sake:

I know that the Time Gear we saw Uxie guarding got stolen and Uxie was like, "Ugh, I knew I shouldn't have trusted them! -_-;" and Grovyle was like, "Um ... I don't know whether you should or shouldn't have, but they've got nothing to do with my being here. I came on my own." I know for certain that the total number of Time Gears we've seen stolen is 3: one from the forest, one from a water-cave area, and then the one Uxie was guarding. So if Amp Plains is after the 4th or higher, then whoops, I guess we know for sure I wasn't ready for it.

I remember that Skuntank, Koffing, and Zubat showed up late at night outside of Wigglytuff's base and plotted their revenge against me and my partner.

Beyond that ... I can't remember specifically "what happened last." >_< Sorry.

I first got Chimchar and was like >_< because I really wanted to play as a grass-type this time around and to have my starter (specifically) be a female Torchic. The next time I got told I was Pikachu. This was with honest answering of two COMPLETELY different sets of questions each time, so I thought it was pretty funny that the game's got so many possible test questions that honestly answering can make you become a different monster depending on luck of the draw.

I eventually got my top pick of Bulbasaur, but suffice to say I've been less than enthused by his animations. (They're a lot less attractive than Pikachu's and Chikorita's were in the first Mystery Dungeon.) And I got Torchic to be my starter -- she was the only female option for my male Bulbasaur. ^-^ Sorry, folks, but I prefer the romantic friendship story angle any day over the "best friends for life Frodo & Samwise" story angle.

I've noticed that just like in Mystery Dungeon 1, my starter is actually more powerful than me. Her HP is always 10 points higher and her other stats are usually higher, too. It was that way with Chikorita vs. Pikachu, and now it's the same way with Torchic vs. Bulbasaur.

Questions for discussion:
1. What do you think of Chatot? I don't trust him and I certainly don't like him. He reminds me way too much of Jafar from Aladdin or other "viziers who do all the actual shot-calling instead of the real sultan."

2. What do you think of the director's decision to have a Wigglytuff be such a prominent force in the game? I think it's ... really awkward. Wigglytuff looks like such a pushover, it's hard to see him as this big bad leader. I suppose that's supposed to be the idea, though. Sigh.

3. Do you hate the new Kangaskhan storage as much as I do? :x I miss when it used to say 10x Grass Gummi instead of Grass Gummi Grass Gummi Grass Gummi [...] Grass Gummi like it now does. -_-;

4. How do you like the new apprehend-the-bandit missions? I really like these! They're tough (sometimes tougher than an actual boss battle!) and are a fun new addition to the game.

5. Are you as annoyed with seeing Drowzee's stupid picture every time you start up your game as I am? Drowzee's such a lame villain imo, it just feels weird seeing him instead of Zapdos as the first icon on the screen.

I guess my questions were more pessimistic than not . Oops.

Re: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2

Oh man, good luck on the Amp Plains. x_x You'll need it.

I finished the main story (which was INTENSE; good job Nintendo!) and I'm working on the storyline after it; I'm a little hooked up right now since the upcoming one is a water dungeon which my Cyndaquil does not like. >_< I've been levelling up an Absol, Luxio, and Riolu (who may or may not evolve because her personality is ADORABLE yet Lucario just owns) to go in her place. Of course, my Bulbasaur is in his late 40s so he may stand a chance, but as soon as Luxio and Riolu level up I'll give the dungeon another try because I'm really getting bored of levelling up (you know how long it takes in these games ._.).

MINOR spoiler involving what Chansey's shop is (nothing to do with the storyline):
What's a little frustrating is that while I was training Luxio, I hatched a Shinx from an egg that had not only high stats (for a level 1 Pokemon at least), but the move Fire Fang... which leads me to the assumption that egg Pokemon have higher stats and egg moves. :| I don't mind having one of each lion evolution, but now I have to start over on training an electric lion for my team. x_x I also really want a Buizel, but I've yet to see any in the wild; I guess I'll have to hope that my current egg hatches into one. :/

Anyhow, WORD about Kangaskhan; it gave me a lot of trouble at lower ranks and inbetween dungeons where you couldn't go back to the Kecleon shop. Now it's not so bad since I'm at a high rank and have a larger sack (an improvement since the last PMD), but I guess if nothing else it gives me more incentive to go sell off whatever junk I have in there that I never use (Blowback Orbs, Warp Seeds, etc). Having to manually give Pokemon hold items each time is annoying too.

I do like some other changes made, however; I mentioned the larger treasure sack before and there's also being able to send recruits home and they won't go away permanently if they die before leaving the dungeon. Also, escort missions aren't so much of a pain; I still refuse to escort anything with Sweet Scent, but at least they have brains and don't wander off to get killed. -_- I LOVE the bounty hunts, too.

Drowzee was lame. :|

Get a Shellos. Storm Drain gives total immunity to water attacks.

One question: Do you still have to wait until the end of the game to evolve Pokemon in this one, or can you evolve them during the main storyline? SI thought it was annoying in the first one you had to wait until the end of the game to evolve Pokemon. :P

You still have wait until after the story to evolve your recruited Pokemon, and your starters aren't allowed to evolve until even later.

I'm kind of irritated by the fact that they didn't fix how some Pokemon get all of their good stat gains from leveling in their evolved forms, but only at the levels before they can actually evolve. On the plus side, they made it so you get stat gains from evolving, though that makes using unevolved Pokemon even more unappealing, especially considering how you can no longer abuse gummis for easy stat gains (You only get a stat gain at a small chance, as opposed to 100% of the time like in PMD 1).

Regardless, I will get enough vitamins and gummis to make my Electrike far stronger then any of my evolved Pokemon.

Re: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2

Picked this game back up yesterday since I only have one exam left. I went from Amp Plains (yup, sure enough that was what I had been ready for) to right now being half-way through the escape from the Sableye jailers. Thoughts ...
  1. Amp Plains wasn't nearly so bad as I had thought it would be. O_o I died the first time when I got all the way to the final boss but it was because I told my team to dispatch (except me and my starter) and that turned out to be a strategic mistake. The next time I went through, I made sure to raise my team (a Cherubi and a Mareep) up to levels close to ours, and they actually gained some nice damage-dealing attacks (Magical Leaf for Cherubi, anyway). Second time I fought the Luxio and Luxray, I took out 3 Luxio on turn 1 (me, Torchic, and Cherubi) and by Turn 4 I think Luxray was gone and we only had two Luxio left who were on the corners of the grid (but not in a straight line so I couldn't Razor Leaf 'em).
    [/*2k8snohe]
  2. For the first time ever, I linked moves, and the game got a whole lot easier. I never linked moves in the first game because I was worried about using up Link Boxes. Now that it's coin-based and we no longer need coins to make expensive purchases (read: friend zones from the first game), I've got thousands upon thousands of spare coins so I figured "Hell, why not?" and went and did it. I linked Tackle to Vine Whip (which I'll delink once Bulbasaur learns a better move than either Tackle or Double-Edge) because they're both close-range physical moves and they're of different types. On Torchic, I linked Scratch and Peck for similar reasons. Fire Spin is a hell of a lot better in MD2 than it is in the real games, so I may have her link Ember and Fire Spin ... except I don't need to right now because every time she uses either move she OHKOs the opponent, and that's only when she even gets to hit (i.e. if my own Tackle + Vine Whip combo fails).
    [/*2k8snohe]
  3. The Dusknoir plot twist was predictable to all of us, I'm guessing. I'm sure most of you have been calling it as long as I have -- since the chapter "Dusknoir" started! -- because, let's face it, it's Dusknoir! You can't get a more evil ghost Pokémon outside of Darkrai! But I definitely was surprised to see his belly-mouth open when the plot twist occurred. For a long time I'd been like, "Hmm, I wonder when that thing's gonna open?" and it never did and I forgot all about it. Then it opened and I was like, "Whoa! :O ... nice, ChunSoft! Very nicely done!"[/*2k8snohe]

Re: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2

Just beat the main story. I don't want to kick the game any more than I already have, but I'll weigh in succinctly: decent story but not epic; Mystery Dungeon 1's story? EPIC. I would happily play MD1 from start to finish again. MD2? Ehh .............

Yeah. The post credit scene of MD2 was pathetic deus ex machina compared to MD1 where you died and GENGAR FUCKING WENT INTO THE AFTER LIFE AND FORCED YOU BACK OUT.

Re: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2

I recently acquired this game and I've been playing for a while now.

My first impressions are that it's a pretty good game. Definitely a solid sequel to PMD1. Battling works fine, but I can't say I've gotten far enough into the game to discover how well new attacks and abilities work yet, so any comments on the system that can't be said about PMD1 will have to wait until I get further in the game. The battling system is still pretty solid, though. I was pretty impressed by it in the first game and I think it's really well executed and that the main games' system translates pretty well. Not flawlessly, of course, (Pokemon moves have trouble working in their first context sometimes anyways) but they work comfortably from my experience.

Anyways, I find that the differences between this and PMD1 are mostly positive. I like the whole guild idea, because it makes you feel more like you have some sort of objective to become something more than what you are. The whole rescue team thing was nice, but it seemed sorta... insignificant in a way. The characters are much more dynamic as far as I can tell, and you can see some clear character development outside of the main duo. As for the new shops, as far as I can tell, they work pretty well. While I'm a bit sad about Friend Areas being removed, the new Chimecho system works really well and is much easier to work with. Spending all that time hunting down the right Pokemon for a job sorta got on my nerves. Kanga Storage seems ok to me, and everything else seems pretty much unchanged.

Mission-wise, I like the addition of the fugitive-hunts. The few I've done have proven to be a challenge since the Pokemon you have to face are quite difficult (though the fact that they corner themselves and you're forced to fight alone can get obnoxious). The other classic missions seem to work well, but I've yet to try an escort mission, so my opinion could quickly change. I'm sure everyone knows how much of a bitch those were to complete in PMD1.

Story-wise, what little I've seen of it has gotten me excited. I really like the whole team dynamic presented by the guild, and I think the character development especially between the two mains is pretty solid for a Pokemon game. I'm quite eager to see how the story unfolds. If anyone is intrested, I have a Chimchar and Treecko as my partner.

Anyways, I'm a bit stuck at Groudon and don't exactly know what to do. It's hard to effectively use Oran Berries when I need them and my Reviver Seeds occasionally go to waste when I try to make my way up. Not to mention that I'm having trouble getting solid damage on Groudon, even with Super-Effective Absorbs from Treecko. Any advice?

Re: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2

Please don't be insulted by the advice, but I'm going to write it as if you didn't know anything and that way I'll be sure to tell you everything. And maybe SOMETHING in this post will actually be new advice to you. Here goes.
  1. Early on in the game, you will want to equip Power Bands or Special Bands, depending on what your main attack is.[/*ws1410ni]
  2. If you have the Apples and Gummis to support it, try resuming from the Kanga Statue and this time, instead of plowing through the dungeon ASAP (which is what I think we all try to do ), take some time to gain not one, not two, but *gulp* three new levels. Early in the game? That'll transform you from chump to champ easy. For example, if you're at Level 12 right now and doing okay against Groudon (hey, you made it to him after all!) but not great? You can always try fighting him at Level 15. Then you should smoke him.[/*ws1410ni]
  3. Always, always turn off the DS and go back to the beginning if you lose more than one Reviver Seed while in the dungeon. (example: you're used to carrying 2 and you lose both; or you're used to carrying 3 and you lose 2)[/*ws1410ni]
  4. Disable all of your starter's moves except its one most powerful move. For example, if your starter is Treecko, disable all of his moves except for Absorb.[/*ws1410ni]
  5. If your starter can't do much damage and the AI keeps gunning for him to knock him out (and spend your Reviver Seeds), change your friend's status to (not exact wording) "Run away!" It makes them not want to fight AT ALL and they will move away from Groudon one square per turn.[/*ws1410ni]
  6. On the other hand, if your starter is helping you, DON'T do #5. Because statistically the enemies tend to spice it up and not always hit you or always hit your starter, but instead switch off hitting both of you. And this means you EACH have a better chance of staying alive longer (without having to Reviver Seed it up) if you both fight together.[/*ws1410ni]
  7. If you have any Vile Seeds (Time only), you may want to try throwing them at Groudon. I found that Vile Seeds were a bit overrated, but I did require one to beat the final boss of the main story, so hey, whatever works, right?[/*ws1410ni]

And then once you defeat Groudon, some future advice:
  • Link moves and link often. Now that you can pay 500 coins per linked move instead of having to trade in a Link Box, there's no reason not to link. Test it out and be amazed! Made this game a complete cakewalk right up until the final boss. Seriously, it was a joke how quickly I'd defeat the boss battles where you've got one mega boss and multiple minions.[/*ws1410ni]
  • Make an effort to bring friends along as soon as you're able. I found that that really helped. My friends were ... err, are a Mareep (who has now become an Ampharos) and a Cherubi. Cherubi used to use Sunny Day a lot which was great because it let her attack twice per turn and it powered up my starter's (Haruka, a Torchic) fire attacks. Mareep was good just because he seemed to be a solid heavy hitter.[/*ws1410ni]
