Sunflora Summershine Cup Round 1 - Gemini Spark vs Escalion

Well, that they'd root me out and ask me to become the referee for this tournament... I really can't seem to fly under the radar anymore. Oh well... I should try to make the most of it, I guess.

The original creator of the Summershine Cup went by the name of Levin Sanders, a Trainer who'd apparently left the region to take a shot at a foreign Pokemon League to the north. And now it fell on him, Kamui of Saigo, to keep things going in the man's absence. He really wanted nothing to do with the spotlight at this point in his life, having only come to Fizzytopia to enjoy a regular Trainer's life again. But he was no regular Trainer, and never could bring himself to say no to anything people asked him...

And that's how I ended up here.

The blue-haired Champion of the eastern region of Saigo decided to keep as low a profile as he could, instead putting the attention on the battlers - as he should. He was informed that one of the participant, a veteran by the name of Matthew Brown, had been declared missing and a replacement was found.

And so it came to be that on this day, Hyrem Harrigan and Rowan Virote would be facing one another in the opening round of the Summershine Cup, on the grassy hills of Stardust Field. Facing off would be a Purrloin versus a Steelix, a match-up that made the easygoing Kamui smile with anticipation. Quite the interesting pair...

Just so I remember to do my orders:

"Ready to synch up and battle, Selina? I know I'm not, but let's do it anyway! Start off with a Charm, let that Steelix know he'd be a big meanie if he attacked you! If that doesn't work, try a Sand Attack! It might be a big Pokemon, but just...try to kick the sand up really high! Then use Pay Day as a...possible bribe for Behemoth?"

It's already getting late when Rowan, riding on Behemoth, finally arrives at the Cloud Garden's Stardust Fields. Not exactly to his surprise two other people where already standing there, one would be his opponent, the other the referee. He still wonders if it was the right choice to make, to enter a tournament not only way past its intended registration date as a replacement trainer, but also completely unprepared.

Normally Rowan prepares everything in great detail, especially when it comes to important events. And at the very least he consults Rose, his beloved Kirlia. But now, due the suddenness of it all, he had to act on his instincts which is not something he often does. He did register his strongest battler though, Behemoth, his gargantuan Steelix. Standing well over ten meter tall and weighing close to half a ton, the Iron Snake is Rowan's main battler and he relies on him this time too.

Now arrived at the the other two trainers, Rowan sees his Steelix will have to battle a tiny Purrloin. Most certainly an interesting match-up. Once the introductions are done and the rules explained, Rowan get to his spot on the battlefield and takes a deep breath. He has to empty his mind first before he can truly focus on the battle, and hope for the best as Behemoth will most likely not take a defeat well.

"Behemoth! I know Purrloin are tiny compared to you, but understand we're in a tournament. Nothing is what it seems, and the Pokémon will be stronger than they look. I'm sure that will go for Sélina too!"

Another deep breath.

"Now Behemoth, ignore the Charm attempts, I know you're stronger than that, and Throw a Rock at her. Use Curse next and finish off with Earthquake to work around any potentially bothering sand!"

ROUND 1

Both battlers understand the implications of this match-up. Behemoth should theoretically vastly overpower Selena, who is in turn expected to take a more strategic, thought-out approach to level things. Whether Hyrem can successfully command his disadvantaged Purrloin to victory, or Rowan crushes the opposition with his Steelix instead, remains to be seen…
Agility is Selena’s forte, and the nimble cat quickly puts that advantage to use by staring innocently at Behemoth with wide-eyed amazement, a good part of it genuine, as is her concern for her own well-being considering the monster she’s facing. Despite Rowan’s faith, there’s no denying that the thought of grinding such a minuscule creature to dust bothers Behemoth somewhat, hinting at a dormant sense of honor in the iron-clad giant. His bond to the young Virote will prevent him from outright disobeying, but no doubt his hits will come softer than usual in hopes nothing too severe happens to the frail Serena.
Behemoth growls and summons a boulder in front of him, then smashes it with his tail and sends rocks flying everywhere, one of them hitting Selena hard and causing her to yelp in pain. In retaliation, the Purrloin buries her claw deep into the arena’s sandy floor, then tosses it up as high as she can… but lacking reliable means to propel the sand with any relevant force, there is no way it reaches all the way up to the Steelix’s eyes, and the motion is wasted.
Capitalizing on the miscalculation, Behemoth causes his body to glow and grow even heavier than before, making him physically stronger (partially offsetting the earlier Charm), more resilient but, in exchange, even slower. Selena attempts to get some manner of offense in, and pelts Behemoth repeatedly with glimmering coins, to very little effect unfortunately. And that’s when Rowan’s final command arrives…
Behemoth seems to hesitate briefly, remembering where he is, but an order is an order. He lifts his gargantuan tail, then drives it into the floor with full force; the ground begins to rumble and then shake violently, a terrifying Earthquake that causes the spectator stands around the New Fairground arena to collapse and the onlookers to flee in an attempt to avoid any physical harm. Selena has no such means to escape, and catches the full brunt of the shockwaves, as she’s tossed around helplessly across the arena with each vicious tremor. When the quake subsides, there is no public left to watch, but the match must continue…
Hyrem needs to find a reliable way to deal some damage, or at the very least effectively avoid Behemoth’s onslaught - even if Charm is going a long way to lessen the harm. Otherwise Rowan seems to be in full control in the early goings…

"Well," Rowan looks surprised, "that went better than expected. It's a pity of the crowd, but perhaps better so, no need to hold anything back now."

"Behemoth, keep up the attacks! Start with Gyro Ball, follow up with Cut to keep the distance between you small so you can grab Selina with a crushing Bind!

Hyrem could only look on as Rowan and Behemoth used the massive advantage they had against him and Selina; the Charm helped, but the Sand Attack did not as she couldn't kick it up high enough to affect his face. Meanwhile, the Steelix was plenty willing to recklessly attack with moves such as Earthquake to get a lot of damage on her in one move--something Kilogram probably would not approve of his fellow Steelix doing--and now with moves being called that took the two contenders' size disparity into account Hyrem had to come up with some effort to potentially turn the hubris against them.

"Okay Selina, I know it's going to be hard to do, but try to dodge out of that Gyro Ball! Then give Behemoth a little Payback against its next attack, and then try draining its energy with a Spite attack!

Purloin clearly has a big, big mess on his hands today. An incoming Steelix is not an easy foot to dodge, but the cat attempts it anyway. The giant metallic snake coils into a circle before collecting enough centripetal force to launch himself into a gyro ball. The strength gathered is amplified by his potential energy collected in his slow movement speed. Selina bides her time, and at the last moment she jumps out of the way. Steelix veers his direction to follow the enemy. Given his massive size, he manages to at least hit Selina for partial damage as the outer edge of his carapace rubs off against the fleeting feline.

Selina is going to have to enter the offensive if she wants to make up for lost momentum. She waits around to see how her opponent will attack, maybe in an effort to double down on damage later. Who knows. Steelix approaches with bloodlust in his eyes, slithering across the field as his tail lights up in energy. Sliding his body across and sharpening his tail, Behemoth slashes the cat across the forehead in an attempt to cut her in half. This is the pokemon world at the end of the day, making these fighting creatures much more resilient to permanent damage. Some might find that unfortunate, others will call it a game for ten year olds where that type of violence has no place. Purloin whimpers and lowers her head a bit realizing how much strong the opponent is in comparison. Perhaps she was lowering her head to fuel residual anger into singular powerful tackle as a form to enact payback against her opponent. The cat strikes one of many boulders to aim at against Steelix, striking for full damage. The giant snake feels the sting despite some layers of protection built into his previous stat boost.

Again, Selina goes into the defensive watching every move of the opponent. Maybe she realizes that her offensive output is not that great at moment, while trickery might be able to get her out of a pickle if need be. Makes you wonder if you place a pickle next to Selina, will she jump? Behemoth rushes in as the cat lays her eyes on him. Placing a curse around the snake, Selina is able to drain the incoming attack out of more energy. It is a form for the cat to spite the much larger adversary. Steelix doesn’t feel the drain right away, being able to bind himself around the cat with relative ease. It is not until the Steelix starts to squeeze that he realizes that the attack has cost him some unexpected extra exertion unaccounted for by himself. Purrloin wiggles her way out between some her squeals, managing to reach a safe distance of seven feet away as the Steelix gets accustomed to his new energy level.

What will be the reaction of each trainer?

Though Selina tries to get out of the way of Behemoth's Gyro Ball, it's a big ol' Steelix, she was bound to get hit by the huge monster eventually, though she was able to reduce the damage she would have taken. After that dodge, however, she couldn't avoid Behemoth's tail and found herself with a gash on her forehead thanks to his Cut attack. She holds the wound with her paws and finds she has had enough of being hit by such a huge creature and slams herself into one of the Steelix's boulders, surrounded by a Dark aura that put an extra amount of damage on the Steel-type despite the tough armor it had. Now that was some Payback!

At this point, Selina has realized the same thing that Hyrem did: she won't be able to beat a Steelix with brute force, but she has a chance if she can counter her opponent's aggressive battling style with every opportunity she can get. That would be no different here as she waited for Behemoth to make his move, then once he was close enough to her she cast a dark spell on him right as he enveloped her in his thick coil Binding her tightly in his embrace. However, the spell took hold soon after that, and as Behemoth tried to tighten her further his energy began to be drained to the point he couldn't hold on to his prey any longer, allowing her to slip out and distance herself enough to catch her breath. Hyrem and Selina were still in a difficult situation, but at least they knew of a way out of it...

"Not bad, Selina, but we'll have to be ready for his next set of attacks! See if you can Charm Behemoth one more time before adding a Pay Day to try and distract the Steelix! Then just dodge whatever he throws at you next!"

Long overdue I know, please forgive me

Rowan looks on as the round progresses. His offensive strategy is clearly helping Behemoth build up a lead over the small Purrloin. And the Steelix's size is only adding to it, making it nearly impossibly for the feline Pokémon to dodge him, as proven my the Gyro Ball hitting her still despite her attempt. And even the Purrloin's PayBack doesn't seem to phase the Steelix much. But then, as Behemoth holds his opponent in a tight grip, Rowan notices how it seems to cost the Iron Giant a lot more energy to hold it than it should.

"Behemoth! Be careful, it looks like your opponent has more tricks up her sleeve than what you might expect!"

Rowan is thinking about the next step to win this match, "Okay Behemoth, we have to stay on the offensive to not lose the momentum we have, so start of with a Heavy Slam while she's trying to Charm you, follow up with a Rock Smash! Then use your length and height to your advantage and swipe the arena with a Cut, give that Purrloin no place to dodge to!"

The cat is trying to set a trap for the opponent. Looking up, and gazing into the eyes of the giant metallic snake, Purrloin charms her way into submitting Steelix being more passive with his damage output. Purrloin’s expressive eyes are to die for, and basically anyone can become entranced by them in a jiff. Selina licks her paw just to add that extra fluff of cuteness. The judge awwws with the opposing trainer, as the interaction is too damn cute. Charming as Selina may be, Behemoth is not going to halt his attack as this technique was already used once before. In fact, he is completely unfazed by the advances, moving forward with his own attack at full strength. Slithering across, Behemoth stiffens up vertically into the air before coming down for a heavy grand slam on top of the feline. Selina is unable to escape the wrath of the snake, feeling the bone crushing weight of the opponent land on top of her. Selina screams and shouts into the heavens, trapped under the massive weight of the opponent. You could image the sound of a few cracked ribs if this match would have been any more realistic. Steelix moves off the opponent, allowing Selina to escape to safety though she is a bit wobbly with jittery movements to boot.

Selina has few attacking options, so Pay Day is not that awkward of a choice. The cat circles the Steelix, tossing several solid energy projectiles in the shape of coins. Behemoth feels something scrape at his carapace, barely registering any sort of harm in the process. Steelix shrugs off the coins, crushing them as he slithers over them. Tackling the opponent, Steelix crushes Selina under his jaw in an attempt to smash Selina as if she was a rock. Purrloin again whines in pain, the massive weight sends her flying across the field after that intense putt putt experience.

Selina is trying her best to stay focused on the match, she has little chance to actually run away. Steelix approaches the tiny opponent, cutting off any escape routes as he coils around the cat. Selina makes a sharp turn to the right, but Steelix still catches the kitty off guard with the sharp edge of his tail as he proceeds to cut the cat. Selina is shanked across the face, and the brute force of the attack again sends her flying across the field toward the side of where her trainer is located. Hyrem cheers for his ally to get up and never give up, reminding the Purrloin that the match is not over yet.

Will Purrloin manage to overcome the opponent?

"Keep going at the Purrloin Behemoth, use your size to your advantage in your attacks like you have been doing the whole time!
Cut the Purrloin over and over again and give it no where to run!"

With Charm no longer looking as effective as it was before, Selina looked like she was being pummeled as she took attack after attack from Behemoth's massive body while at the same time not able to return any sort of meaningful damage, but Selina wasn't going to win that way anyway.

"Selina, dodge the first Cut attack, and then Spite against the other two Cut attacks to see if you can drain enough of Behemoth's energy!"
