I am fully supporting South Africa in their attempt to overcome the odds and qualify.

Edited the original post b/c of this amazing discovery :o ...

http://espn.go.com/espn3/index/_/spo...view/upcoming/

ESPN appears to most graciously be allowing the public to watch pretty-darn-good-resolution live feed of the World Cup matches from their computers. I don't know if the site is accessible internationally or only to IPs originating from within the USA, but regardless, this looks to be a pretty good replacement-solution to my weekly sojourns to home.

Though I'll probably drive home anyway for the semifinals and finals. :P

Win.

EDIT: Oh, the US are through in first. Darn, that means we'll probably be up against Germany. Yay.

Congrats, Landon Donovan. I've said it before, I'll say it again: I hated you in '02 for your arrogance, I disliked you in '06 for your overrated status, but you returned in '10 a humble man who hungered for the Cup like no other on his team. Your humbleness and determination have seen the USA through to Round 2 in first place. Truly, you are a most-deserving MVP of the 2010 USA World Cup team.

Wayne Rooney, booooooo, terrible performance imo. When he was called off, too, he knew it, and he knew why. Boo. In previous games, he couldn't help it -- very well-guarded by the opponents -- but in this game he had so many openings, so many opportunities, that he completely squandered.

I'm happy England has made it through. I'm happy the USA (just for Donovan) has made it through. But I feel bad for Slovenia. The USA goal bumped them out, and that's gotta sting. Algeria may feel like the USA crushed their chances for Round 2, but in reality I'd say Slovenia are the real victims here. Algeria was out anyway with England's win over Slovenia (with the two advancing to Round 2): all the American goal did was to swap the USA's fate with Slovenia's.

Except Germany are going to top the group and face England. Their performance against Ghana suggests it'll be just a matter of time before they score against Ghana.

THAT's how England should have been playing the last two games, was like watching another team, was kinda hoping the US didn't go through, Just as the England game finished I switched over to see them celebrating their goal in extra time, was some lucky lucky stuff for the US.

I'm just glad England managed to get their act together.

Ghana stopped the US team in group stages last World Cup, and they had they're chances vs Germany so I wouldn't bet all my money on a US victory.

I honestly don't know what to think of England vs Germany. Germany showed great promise in their opening match, but the last two made my German boner go limp. England, on the other hand, tied against Algeria (which they really should have won) and squandered many opportunities against Slovenia. It could go either way.

Be sure to click the soccer ball button on your YT videos, it's quite a nifty little feature Google decided to implement today (slowpoke?).

Glad to learn that Italy's out. They were a disgraceful team in World Cup 2006 and yet horrifically they won the Cup. It would have disgraced the sport even more had they been able to return to claim it two World Cups in a row. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

Neither of these teams look to deserve the cup. Japan's goalie all but gave Denmark a goal and he's only too lucky it didn't go in! As for the Danes, this is some pretty sloppy European football.

EDIT: Five seconds after I hit submit, Keisuke Honda scored for Japan. Very nice goal. But I'm still not convinced the Japanese deserve to win the World Cup. I'll need to see more smooth plays like this before they win me over.

Y'okay, Endo's feint-goal just now (30') has me warming up to Japan a bit more. They definitely deserve to win this match -- I've been rooting for at least that much since the start! -- but this smart level of offense has me liking them more and more.

The problem is: their defense. Japan's defense is poor, and their goalie s-u-c-k-s. He comes way too far out of the box when there are Danes all around. He fails to grab the ball with his hands. He fails to kick it away. Hell, early on in the game he even waved his teammates away from intercepting the ball -- only to discover that they were right, he was wrong, Japan had been last to touch the ball, and he'd just given the Danes a free corner. -_-;

Japan 3, Denmark 1.

This was Japan's best game in World Cup history (by points). It was also only the second time they've defeated a European team in World Cup history. (Really? Did I hear that right?)

I'll be rooting for Portugal while knowing little about either team's immediate history and greatly admiring the Brazilians historically. I've no idea how good Portugal's latest-footballer-with-"Ronald"-for-the-first-bit-of-his-name superstar is, other than what I've heard second-hand from reporters and fans. It sounds like he's good. But Brazil won't go down without a fight, that's for sure.

I think we'll have to break out 3 lions song for the German match, which I can't wait to see, and thank god it's on at 12 instead of half 4 in the morning.
