Here We Go

A nervous tension filled the air as Lucas and his family ate an early dinner. He felt the eyes of his foster mother and brother peering at him, attempting to ascertain his emotions, but he deliberately avoided their gaze. Of course, he felt nervous too, even more anxious than they could have possibly been; he would finally be making his independent foray into the world that evening. Rather than express any of his doubts, though, he turned his attention wholly to the plate in front of him. He wiped away some bread crumbs from the corner of his mouth.

“These beans are really great, Renee. Thank you.”

The older woman sitting to his right tensed up slightly as if pulled out of deep thought. She reached up and pushed a bit of her graying brown hair behind her ear before setting her hands in her lap. “Oh, well, they’re the same beans as always,” she said after a while, a small smile on her lips. She seemed to have not taken a bite of her own. “I’m glad you like them.”

Now that the silence had been broken, ten-year-old River felt comfortable enough to speak up. “Mom, do you think Lucas will be okay? The forest is so big and Beat is so little…don’t you think–”

Lucas shifted to his left and put his hand on his little brother’s shoulder. “Hey, I’m gonna be fine. Even if I didn’t have Beat, I’d just force my way through. Don’t worry, you little punk.” At the sound of his name, a small elephant-like creature stumbled into the room and pulled himself on Lucas’s leg. Lucas pulled River close and ruffled his hair with his fist. “We promise.”

The boys’ laughter seemed to ease Renee’s worries a bit. She nodded and raised a spoonful of broth to her mouth. “Yes, yes, you’ll be fine, won’t you? There are trainers out there half your age, even during these times. And anyway, it’s for the best…every boy must leave home eventually.”

The front door creaked open and a gray-haired man walked in, tan and tall and wearing denim overalls. River jumped out of chair and ran over.

“Hi Dad!”

“Howdy, Riv, how’re ya doin’? Lemme go so I can eat, huh?”

-----

The old man leaned back in his chair and pushed his empty dishes away from his body. Lucas and River sat with him, long since finished with their own meals, while Renee began to clear the table.

“Man, the mill’s gonna be a lot different without you there pickin’ up the slack, Lucas. Damn near broke my back today. Thompson’s too distracted to count on and Jack’s about to leave on his own journey himself.” He sighed and kicked off his boots beneath the table. “You ready to start workin’, Riv?”

Renee shot her husband a sideways glance. “Excuse me, Ross?”

The little boy sat upright in his chair and stared wide-eyed at his father. “Really, Dad? I can work with you? Awesome!”

“Naw, naw, it was just a joke. Just another year or two and you’ll get on, don’t worry now.”

“Mhmm. We’ll see about that. Lumber’s a dangerous enough industry, and with you leading it…oy vey,” Renee said. River slumped down in his seat, clearly discouraged. “Don’t worry, sweetheart,” she added quickly, “We’ll talk about it.”

A few seconds of awkward silence filled the void before Ross set his sight on Lucas. The sun was starting its steady decline on the horizon and orange light fell horizontally through the windows. “Now listen here, son. You sure you don’t wanna stay the night and set off tomorrow mornin’? What’s another twelve hours, huh?”

“No sir. I wouldn’t wanna wait longer than I must,” Lucas said in reply. If I wait longer, I won’t ever want to leave. He turned his head towards the woman at the sink and said, “It’s nothin’ against you two. Y’all are the best thing that ever happened to me. I just…I just gotta go.”

-----

Beat and Lucas sat on the front porch together, taking in their surroundings for one final moment. He already said his goodbyes, given his embraces and wiped away his tears. Even Beat had gotten emotional, making small noises and trying to comfort everyone with tender trunk hugs. Lucas had promised to write often to River and send various sundries during his adventures. He’d thanked Renee and Ross for their years of guidance and protection and promised that he would come back to see them. That’s when he’d started crying; though he recalled the shadows of his past, the real drive he felt for his desire for adventure, he owed everything that he had, and all the man that he had become, to these two individuals.

The screen door creaked open and Lucas saw Ross walking towards him, hand in his pockets and lit cigar in his mouth.

“You better get goin’. Sun’s gonna set here pretty soon, and if you saw little Riv’s face right now you would never leave with a clean conscience.”

Lucas set Beat down on the floor and stood up, pulling on his pack. “Yessir. Just wanted to take it all in.” He started down the steps before Ross called back at him again.

“I know you’ll find them, Lucas. They’re out there. Don’t ever lose hope.” Ross extended his hand to the young man.

Lucas nodded and accepted the man’s handshake. A second wave of emotion flooded his body and he felt the tears building at the corners of his eyes. “Yessir.” He turned quickly and walked briskly through the yard. He whistled sharply. “Let’s go, Beat.”

Ross took a few more puffs on his cigar. “Go get ‘em, son.”

As the sun begins to set beneath the treetops of Viridian Forest, Lucas gives profound thanks and a tearful goodbye to the foster family that had done so much for him, before telling Beat that it was time to go. The little Phanpy waddles by his trainer's side, clearly affected by the emotions his trainer's family is going through at the departure of the young man they had raised as one of their own, as well as the tearful state of his trainer. Even so, there came a time in every young person's life to strike out on their own, and Lucas had a number of burning questions in his heart that he needed to answer... This journey wasn't just about becoming a great trainer, after all.

They say a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and though Lucas' first steps are in the familiar forests of Viridian where much of the lumber for Ross' mill was collected, it was as good a place as any to begin searching for adventure. The gentle sound of leaves rustling in the night breeze comforts Lucas as he and Beat make their way through the woods, navigating through the darkness as quickly and silently as they can. If Lucas and Beat were lucky, perhaps they could even catch a sleeping Pokemon unaware!

As the pair make their way through the forest, Beat begins acting oddly; stopping short and lifting his big, floppy ears, his eyes focus towards the West, his trunk lifted outward as if pointing. Taking the cue from his Phanpy, Lucas turns in the direction that Beat's trunk is pointing, and soon catches wind of a soft, yet unfamiliar sound... A voice, perhaps? It was hard to tell, but it sounded like someone... or something... was singing out in the forest. Who would be singing so late at night? Perhaps it was just their imagination...

Growing up, Lucas had often walked the forest around Viridian Village at night to soothe his thoughts. This night was no exception. The beginning of his adventure was buoyed by the caresses of the dusky breezes, allowing him to place his reservations and regrets at the back of his mind. For the first few hours his mind was relatively blank. Beat trod along faithfully at his side, his trunk swaying lightly to and fro, his oversized ears perking occasionally at the noises of the sleeping wood: the light coos of the nocturnal Hoot-hoot, or the brief screech of delight from a Zubat finding food. Once they’d passed the mill, and moved past a brief pang of the sad recognition that he wouldn’t be back here for a long while, he felt strangely free. He felt ownership over his life for the first time, that every step he took from here on out would be brand new territory. He was excited.

When Lucas guessed that midnight had rolled around, he decided to stop for a rest and break into the snacks that Renee’d insisted they take: jerky for himself, and some berries for Beat. He sat himself on a stump and tore into the salted meat with a smile on his face, wholly confident in himself. He pat Beat absentmindedly on the head and said, “We’re gonna do it, pal, you and me. The whole wide world is ours to explore, the answers ours to find. We’ll have to toughen up, no doubt, cuz it won’t be easy. You ‘specially. But that’s alright.”

He scratched behind his friend’s ear.

“I just know…Hey. What’s wrong?” His idealistic vision was cut short by his concern for the Phanpy. The Pokemon hadn’t touched its food, his eyes focused intently on the western expanse of trees and shrubs. His ears are raised and alert. “Do you hear something? Beat? Beat! Dammit, what is it?”
The sudden exclamation snaps his Phanpy out of its stupor. The periwinkle elephant raises his eyes apologetically to his trainer and starts gesturing animatedly with his trunk. “Phan, phan,” he says, and points his trunk in the direction he was staring. Then he reaches up and grabs his trainer’s ears.

“Phan.”

He sat for a bit before he realized what Beat meant. The noise was very soft, almost like the wind, easily overwhelmed by the excitement he had been feeling. Whatever it was, Lucas could tell it was some ways away, and the way it changed pitched…

“Singin’? Who’s out there singin’ in the dead of night?” Lucas wasn’t aware of anybody who lived this deep into the wood. The melody was entrancing in its own way, and though a small amount of fear bubbled up in the froth of hope he'd built up, he gave in to his curiosity.

“Well, maybe we should follow it. By the time we reach it, we’ll need to rest for a bit anyway. Maybe they’ll let us a bed for a few hours. Can you catch a scent with your Odor Sleuth?”

Beat didn’t seem to share his trainer’s determination to seek out the source, but he followed along. He raised his trunk in an attempt to sniff a trail out as they packed up their rations and walked in the direction of the song.

Lucas and Beat continued onward, through the lush forest, with the small Phanpy's nose guiding them towards the cause of all this light singing. Despite having the stellar nose to guide them, the two hadn't much in the way of lighting, with only a fairly full moon to grant any sort of mercy upon the nocturnal travelers. As the two went about their way, they were extremely attentive to the singing, making sure to never lose track of it. Despite their hardest efforts, the melody fluctuated, going down and up in volume, as though it were trying to elude the two, intriguing them all the while.

This little game of trying to find the sound went on for a fair amount of time, taking Beat and Lucas through a few odd twists and turns, but eventually, the sound became much more distinct. Lucas knew they must be getting close. But, as they got closer to the sound, suddenly another began to make its way through the air. This one was definitely human, but not just human. It almost seemed like.. sobbing. Hearing this instantly put Lucas on edge, even if Beat was unfamiliar to this sound or its meaning, Lucas knew it all too well, and was worried for what would come next. Despite the somewhat frightening sound, the two continued their search through the vast forest.

At last, the two made it to the source of the sounds. They couldn't yet see what it was, but they knew they were there. The two had but a small bush standing between them and their mysterious singing. With determined eyes, Lucas spread apart the shrubbery, and made his way into the forest clearing, with Beat mere steps behind him. "Phanpy-Phan" exclaimed the small elephant Pokemon, excited to have found what it had sought after. Though, just as the Pokemon began to make noise, Lucas quickly knelt down, clasping a hand over Beat's mouth. "Shhh!" he rasped under his breath as he took in the scene before him.

In front of him was a small girl, no older than nine or ten, on the ground by a tree. She was curled up, and clearly trying to hold back a sob. In front of her was a small, pink Pokemon. A Jigglypuff. It was singing ever-so-lightly, but almost never ceasing its ballad. The truly scary part of the scene was what lied before them. A swarm of Weedle all lying down on the ground, surrounding the girl and Jigglypuff. It all made sense to Lucas. The Weedle swarm must have attacked these two, and in a last ditch effort to stop their onslaught, Jigglypuff started singing. Normally Pokemon would stay asleep after just twenty seconds of hearing that attack, but the world has been changing so drastically recently, maybe these Weedle are all restless. Whatever the case was, Lucas stared at the scene before him. At the swarm of Weedle, ready to release their poisonous attacks at any moment, the small girl trying to hold back her cries as to not disturb the Weedle, and the brave Jigglypuff, trying so hard to protect her trainer in this time of need. Even she's looking pretty warn out. The constant singing must be putting a horrendous strain on her.

This leaves Lucas pondering his next move. Will he try to help, and how will he even do it? Or will he leave the girl, and go find safety before the Weedle go after him.

Beat's nose guided the pair to a small clearing, where Lucas saw a young girl being threatened by a pack of vermillion, venomous Weedle. A rotund, pink puffball was the child's only guardian, a Pokemon Lucas had never seen before. Instead of fighting off the insects, however, the creature sang, trying to lull them off to sleep. As Lucas and Beat had approached the clearing, he had felt a little groggy, perked up by his realization of the young girl's predicament upon arrival. The puffball's voice was raspy and tired, though, far from its full strength.

Song faltering, the Weedle were quickly encroaching on the pair, and Lucas knew he would have to step in. In his mind's eye he saw himself saving Beat all those months ago, huge Scolipede moving closer and closer toward him. He had survived that. Weedle, though gross, shouldn't prove more of a challenge. His decision was virtually instantaneous.

He leaned down to Beat and whispered, "We've got no choice buddy, but you can do this. On the count of three, we're gonna rush them down. You stampede all over those bugs, bowl them out of the way. Heavy Slam, yeah? I'll go scoop the girl and the puffball and then we'll book it. Got it?"

Beat, small and inexperienced to any sort of crisis, hesitantly swung his trunk in agreement, trusting Lucas. His eyes betrayed his anxiety, but Lucas brushed it off, merely nodded in response.

"All right, then. One. Two. Three!" The clearing burst into full-view as the pair burst into the scene.

Lucas quickly assessed the situation in front of him, seeing the Weedle barely sleeping, the little girl trying her hardest to hold her self together, and the heroic pink puff ball Pokemon barely keeping the Weedle at bay. Without a moment's deliberation, he came to a decision. This was somewhat rushed as he saw the Weedle waking up, apparently becoming used to the lull of the pink Pokemon's tune. He needed to act fast, or there could be some serious problems very soon.

Lucas shot Beat a look, who was a bit hesitant to act, letting out a quick spur of words as he explained the plan to the small blue elephant. "Heavy Slam to run through the Weedle" he rasps to his companion. At once, the Phanpy rushes out forward, trying to shake all hesitation from his system. "PHAAAAAAANPYYYYYYYY" yells out Beat as he runs into the forest clearing. Suddenly he begins glowing, cloaked in a brilliant silvery light, illuminating the entire forest clearing. The Weedle all turn their heads from the girl over to Lucas and Beat. Beat takes a stepback as the Weedle all glare at him, scared as they all lock on to him. He cowers back for but a moment, before looking back and seeing the tired puffball and terrified girl at the other end of the clearing. With one last shout of determination, Beat charges forward. The previously scared Phanpy is now determined to get to the girl as he charges through the horse of Weedle. The small bug Pokemon are taken entirely by surprise as this bright ball of Pokemon rams through them. Weedle are flying into the air before falling back on the ground with a group of audible thuds. Lucas sees Beat going to work on the wild Pokemon and smiles to himself for a moment, before chasing in after him. He has to shift to the left and right to avoid the Weedle Poison Sting attacks, but he does it rather well.

Soon the two are half way through the clearing, and the Weedle have clearly taken note of them. They all emit hissing sounds, not appreciated the disturbance these two caused. Nevertheless, they continue onward, Beat and Lucas pushing through the army of Weedle. More Weedle begin raining from the sky as Beat slams through them, flinging them up into the air with his trunk. With every Weedle Beat knocks through, more and more become angered at the two of them, and soon more Weedle come in through the bushes towards the edge of the clearing. Luckily enough for Beat and Lucas, they reach the girl. However, it's looking like they're not anywhere near safe yet.

Lucas reaches the girl, kneeling down in front of her. "Hello, are you okay?" Lucas asks her, trying to possibly determine what to do next. However, right as he starts talking to her, her eyes fall shut. She appears to be unconscious, lying near the base of the tree. Things have taken an unfortunate turn, and now Lucas is faced with yet another decision. What to do next? The girl is rather small, and could be lifted without too much of an issue. Just as Lucas begins to think about it, Beat gives out a shrill cry. "Phan!" he yells, signaling Lucas to look over and see just how bad things are. More Weedle have amassed, and are all about ready to get their revenge on the ones that just disturbed their hive of Weedle.

Lucas had to think of something fast, or things could get real ugly, real fast.

Damn. The situation was getting messy. The girl had now fallen unconscious, totally overwhelmed by the stress of the situation. The puffball likewise seemed similarly exhausted, simply unable to Sing any longer. But Lucas didn’t have the two additional bodies to worry about: Beat, the young virgin of battle, was embroiled in battle with an increasing number of Weedle. The insects literally dropped from the tree branches above them, crawling ominously towards the lunging miniature elephant. He may have stomped several already, but the Weedles’ numbers advantage would soon win out. Various scenarios played out in Lucas’ mind. Should he continue to push Beat into virtually unwinnable combat? He quickly perished the thought; Beat was his only source of solace on this journey, and he’d be remiss to risk his companion’s life so easily. He shifted his gaze towards the two inert bodies in front of him. Were they worth it? What would happen if he left them there? Nobody would know that Lucas had even been here, had had the chance to save them. A little girl out on her own in the middle of the night wouldn’t be missed anyway; something was obviously up with her family. Or her head. Or both. Really, Lucas thought, it isn’t my problem.

He reached down and slung the girl over his shoulders, not being as gentle as he could have been. Now with everything going on above him. He did the same with the puffball, picking it up under his free arm. The weight of the two bodies sat heavily on his shoulders, but together they weren’t much heavier than anything he’d ever lifted at Ross’ lumber mill. He grunted, shifted the pair a little, and turned to face his distressed Phanpy, still bravely fending off the Weedle. He whistled at him.

“Beat, run! Let’s go!” he shouted, catching the glint of comprehension in the elephant’s expression. He could see several stingers stuck in Beat’s hide, small drops of blood collecting in the various folds of his periwinkle skin. The light blue was tinged slightly pink by his rushing blood, flushed with the rush of battle. His little lungs were working hard, and his trunk curved defensively in front of him, acting as a prehensile appendage to bat his foes away. Lucas had never seen Beat like this, had never relied on him in battle before. So this was the lifeblood of Pokemon training. This is what it meant. Lucas jerked his head. “We’re outta here!”

He took off running from the direction they’d come, Beat nipping at his heels. The additional bodies felt awkward on his back, and he wondered how long he could keep this up. Hopefully the Weedle wouldn’t pursue them.

Beat and Lucas begin their dash back through the clearing they had just tried so hard to get past the first time. However, Lucas finds himself heavily weighed down by the pink puffball and the small girl lobbed over his shoulders. He and Beat run as fast as their legs will carry them, but they lack the element of surprised that allowed them the ability to make it through the first time, and now the larger army of Weedle catch them as they begin their run. A barrage of purple, lightly glowing needles, dart through the air, aimed more so at Beat than his human companion. The small elephant Pokémon lets our a horrendous scream as the needles fly into him. The two continue their sprint, despite all the obstacles in their way. The Weedle continue to hiss and attack as the boy and his Pokémon run through them, ignoring the pain of weight and the pain of poison, bearing down on both of them as though they were Atlus themselves.

After not-too-long of the Weedle being somewhat trampled by the two, stepped on and shoved and otherwise treated awfully, they switched tactics, trying to stop the two foes in their tracks. The small bug Pokémon emit another hissing noise, but this one isn't solely vocal. This hissing is caused by the sound of webs shooting out form their tails and towards Lucas. Perhaps the Weedle know Beat's body type doesn't leave much for constriction, but Lucas is not nearly so fortunate. The webs start to hit him, sticking to his legs, and soon encasing his lower legs nearly entirely. The boy loses his balance, and soon falls onto his knees, barely managing to keep a hold of the bodies hung over his shoulders. After just a moment of struggling, it's clear that the webs aren't going to be undone all that easily. Lucas is in a rather dire situation, but luckily not everything is as bad as it could be. The Weedle are almost afraid of the damage they've seen coming from these two thus far, and don't want to go too close to them just yet. This wariness gives Lucas and Beat the few precious moments they need to figure out how to get themselves out of the rather unfortunate situation they're currently tied up in.

Off a little ways to his left, Lucas notices something that might just be his saving grace. A small stick, fallen from one of the forest's many trees, is just a foot away from him. One end of it looks somewhat sharpened, falling from a tree at a perfect angle to make it a sort of shank in the right hands. As he eyes the stick, Lucas considers his options going forward.

What options does he have? Will he try to use the stick in front of him to save himself. And if he does, how will he even manage to do it? There isn't much time to make a decision, as the Weedle's wariness isn't going to last much longer. It's not or never.

Oof. Lucas collapsed to his knees, legs bound together by the sticky webs of the encroaching swarm of Weedle. Damned insects. He struggled to keep the two unconscious bodies secured to his shoulders, swaying uncertainly on the ground. Beat nudged his head into Lucas' side and trumpeted urgently, trying to press his trainer on.

"Phan, phan!" he cried, wrapping his stout trunk around Lucas' wrist, attempting to pull his trainer up. The bleeding on Beat's old Poison Sting wounds had stopped yet the barbs remained lodged in his skin; new wounds had sprung up as well, fresh blood springing to the surface. He'd heard the Pokemon's cries as they'd run. Lucas knew he had some barbs of his own in his legs, but adrenaline was keeping the pain at bay. For now. Hopefully it was the same for Beat.

"I can't, buddy. They've got me tied up," he tried to explain to Beat. He could feel beads of sweat collect at his brow and drip down his cheek. His breathing was deep and quick. He felt a bit lightheaded. Craning his neck, he turned to look at the insects that had brought him down, only to see that they'd slowed a distance away. Clearly they still had their reservations about approaching the pair. He sighed and turned back around, unsure of how to remove the String Shot bound to his legs. He spied a sharp branch leaning against a nearby tree when an idea snuck its way into his head.

"Keep the Weedle at bay, Beat. I'm gonna grab that stick and try to cut the string off. If I can do it we'll make another break for it, alright, pal?"

"Phan." Beat cocked his head, large ears drooping crookedly over his face.

"Trumpet your little ass off, Beat. Act like the alpha and they'll believe it."

Lucas set down the girl and her pink puffball and then grabbed the stick. "Let's see if this works."

With the situation having taken a turn for the worse, Lucas gingerly sets the girl and her Jigglypuff down to one side, grasping at the nearby stick and hacking at the webbing binding his legs. Rushing to protect his trainer, Beat glares the advancing Weedle down, jaunting left and right to stay their advances as he crashes his figure around the forest floor. Just as he seems about to be overwhelmed, the Phanpy plants himself firmly, taking in a deep breath and leveling his trunk at his foes. With an almighty cry, he unleashes a blast of sound not unlike a trumpeting roar, leaving the Weedle stunned in place. Even stranger, their aggression seems to abruptly disappear, their eyes seeming to lose a cloudy hue. With each of them stumbling dazed, they slowly clear off, and Lucas finally manages to remove the remainder of the sticky webbing holding his legs together. As he does, the girl begins to stir, looking around and hugging her Jigglypuff tight. Looking towards Lucas, she hurriedly averts her gaze, the girl clearly much younger than the young male. Her cheeks burn with a crimson hue, but she forces herself to speak.

"D-did you save me?"

Lucas yanked at the remaining silk on his leg, inwardly grinning with pride as Beat cleared out the remaining insects. He made a mental note to reward him later. As he turned his body to pitch the String Shot-laden stick into the dark depths of the forest, though, Lucas noticed that the young girl had come to, peering out at him from behind her pastel Pokemon.

"D-did you save me?" she asked. Her fear was palpable, and Lucas turned his face away, blood rushing to his cheeks.

"Yes, uh, I guess I did," he said gruffly, despite the timely crack in his voice. He ran his hands through his hair, tossing away any debris that had accumulated in it during the scuffle. "I tried, at least. This guy," he continued, pointing at Beat, who peeked back at him, pride beaming through his beady black eyes. "That guy did most of the work." A smile had crept onto Lucas' face. He chuckled a bit but stopped himself after a second or two, clenching his jaw again and turning towards the young girl. He stood up and extended a hand to her and her Pokemon. "Let's get you standing up again, at least. What are you doing out here at this time of night? Do you live around here?"

He took a second glance at the pink creature in her arms. "What kind of Pokemon is that anyway? I don't think I've seen one before."

The little girl slips her dainty hand into yours and you easily pull her to her feet. She's not completely steady yet unfortunately, having fainted, and so holds on tightly to it for support. You take a moment to notice the girl a little more now that the dust has settled. Her pink dress is clearly a hand-me-down, which has faded from years of use and is fraying. It's also dirty, most likely from her adventures in the forest this evening. Her hair is unkempt and a thick mousey brown. She's clearly somewhat malnourished if her skin tone is any indication, and she doesn't look like the healthiest kid on the block. It seems the girl doesn't have the most stable of backgrounds. But she's doing her best to be cheery now that she's coming back to her senses.

"That's a lot of questions," she mumbles to herself, maybe a touch overwhelmed. You are dealing with a kid after all. A kid who was unconscious thirty seconds ago. However, she does acquiesce to the questioning. Looking down at the Balloon Pokémon in her arms, she explains that "This is my Jigglypuff, Bubbles. My sister said she caught it in Mt. Moon for me." She pales a little. This may be a touchy subject. "We were playing in the forest, that's all... Then we found this big hive. I wanted to look closer, but when we got close, all those creepy Weedles came out and started chasing us. It was really scary." You wonder why Bubbles didn't attempt to protect the girl, but you realise she probably doesn't have much experience in commanding a Pokémon. Poor kid probably didn't know what to do apart from run. You repeat your question asking her if she lives around here. She freezes, not sure what to do all of a sudden.

"Mom... Mom said I shouldn't talk to strangers!" she shouts, before tearing her hand away from yours and racing off into the brush. You immediately hear a thud. She probably tripped on a tree root or something, but the girl begins to cry.

What will you do?

OOC: Sorry for the short response, just trying to spark my WF journey up again.

Lucas stared blankly on as the girl tripped and began to sob on the forest floor. River was the only child he'd had the patience to deal with for any prolonged period of time these days. Fortunately for the girl, though, Beat was a little more socially aware, approaching the sobbing child and nudging her gently with his trunk.

"Phan..." Beat cooed gently, patting the side of her head. He turned and looked pointedly at Lucas as if to shame him into action. Following his partner's lead, Lucas sighed and crouched down, but made no move to make contact.

"Come on now," the young man said, echoing Beat's concern. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bombard you with questions. But it's too late for either of us to be out alone right now. Where should I take you?"

OOC: This was quite the read so far so I never thought I'd end up updating for it.

The child continues to sob, but Beat's gentle touch seems to calm her down somewhat. As she nurses her hands, fortunately just scuffed, she looks at your eyes briefly before turning to the forest floor. Nervously, she mumbles something that you can't quite hear. Beat hears her quite fine though, being both right next to her and also having those lofty ears of his. Nuzzling up to the girl, the Phanpy coos again, begging the girl to repeat what she had said.

"A big treehouse... Mom told me to stay with the kids there while she was working the fields..." she answered, still not able to look you in the eye. "I don't remember in which direction it was but the kids would probably be looking for me around the forest right now. Maybe Mom might be there too..." On saying that, she begins to cry again, petting Beat as she quietly calls for her mom.

While you got a location, you unfortunately don't have much of a clue given about where that is. You don't get much time to think though, as a familiar larval Pokemon catches your notice on the forest path from where you came, the rustle of undergrowth giving its presence away. It doesn't seem aggressive this time round, but what are its intentions? Does it want something from you? Or do you think it has something for you?

What will you do?

"A big treehouse, huh?" Lucas repeated, turning from side to side and straining his eyes and craning his neck attempting to see into the canopy of the trees. It was pretty dark. No shortage of trees here, so it's gonna be hell trying to find that, he mused to himself. Though surely she hadn't wandered away too far... He swiveled his attention back onto the distressed child. River's countenance flashed suddenly in his mind's eye, and Lucas felt a pang of guilt over his inability to sufficiently comfort her. Step it up and set an example. Like Fiora always did for you...

He was, at least, grateful that he had Beat with him to pick up his slack. Lucas took a few steps closer to her before stooping down to her level, giving a small smile to the girl and the Jigglypuff still recovering in her arms. "No worries! We'll get you home. I promise! Ain't that right, Beat?"

His partner trumpeted softly in response, waving his trunk in the air in support. The Phanpy's gentle exuberance quickly reversed into wary cautiousness, however, as he turned his attention back towards the path they had run down before. Eyeing one of the Weedle, he raised his ears and bent closer to the ground, taking a few steps out in front of the young girl and his trainer.

"Well what do we have here?" the young man asked, pulling himself back up to his full height. Grabbing the stick he had used to ward off the insects with earlier, Lucas stood with his Phanpy, awaiting the approaching creature...

Recalling the kindhearted comfort Fiora gave you in your youth, you step up to the plate to try calm the young girl down. Together with the much appreciated help of Beat, your soothing words manage to still her tears before Beat alerts you to the Weedle drawing closer.

As you take on a defensive stance with your improvised weapon, the Weedle stops in its tracks, waving its tail to and fro. Watching it for a while in awkward silence, you notice the stinger at the end of it continually points in the same direction, towards the heart of the forest. Was it perchance trying to help you bring the child to safety?

As you take a closer look in the direction it points to, you notice shadows moving between the trees, maybe some vines moving as well. You can't quite make out what they are, but you can also hear voices speaking faintly in the distance. What catches your attention though, is a loud flapping noise followed by a heavy thud, clear as day in the mild cacophony of the forest.

The child tugs at your shirt, obviously still frightened of the Weedle. While it was difficult to discern whether she wanted you to head in the direction of the Pokemon or not, she seems interested in what caused that loud boom just now, recalling a giant creature occasionally coming by to visit the treehouse that she stayed at.

"The big green thing is kind. It has a friend who brings things to the treehouse. Mom sometimes comes to pick me up and take me home on its back..."

With the young child opening up her heart just ever so slightly, you're left wondering what you should do with the Weedle who wants to guide you, and where your next steps take you...
