Nuclear Weapons

So since Britains MPs are currently voting on whether to renew Trident (the UKs independent nuclear deterrent), I figured it'd be interesting to see where UPN sits on the subject of nuclear weapons, disarmament, etc. My own thoughts to come later because on phone.

Nuclear weapons are Enstein's greatest mistake and should never have became as numerous as they are today.

I wrote to my MP last week asking her not to vote for them.

To me they're whatever. The sheer devastation and fallout (literal and political) of detonating one limits their use, compared to conventional weapons. You can say nuclear material could be better funneled into constructive uses, but there's always the fear someone uses it as a weapon.

I'm less afraid of nukes than I am of the NSA, to put things bluntly.

What do nukes and the NSA have in common?

Renewed overwhelmingly, 472-117 or thereabouts (I deleted the BBC notification, so going from memory, too lazy to check fuck you).

I think Trident is a colossal waste of money and any MP who voted for it should be ashamed, but apparently I get nothing I want in politics, soooooo~

It's a valid political position to want to vote for them. It's just morally reprehensible.

unfortunately we now live in an age where this sort of chest beating is apparently necessary otherwise you will appear both weak and vulnerable if you do not, because general threat of war has just become a dick measuring contest, like, 'don't fuck with me you only have seven inches and I have seven and a half', and nobody wants to be the guy with the shortest dick, or something

I'm not sure if complete worldwide nuclear disarmament will ever be anything more than a dream. the future of WMDs will be things arguably just as frightening as nuclear is, like kinetic bombardment, massive railguns, etc, so there is a chance nuclear will be a thing of the past, but we'll just have a new flavor of evil to be frightened of

Both times, which is at least self-consistent (unlike the SNP and a good chunk of Tories).

I don't like them, I don't think I know of a single use of them I'd consider justified, but I feel like an attempt at global disarmament would be a bad idea. They're understood enough that those who can, will reproduce what they are able to, and the global community will have less of an idea of who has what and in what quantity. Which also puts many innocent nations and lives in a danger of not being able to protect themselves. I don't like it, but it is the world we live in. And I honestly think supporting a disarmament is naive at best. It'll only address surface problems, a bandage on a broken arm. The deeper problems? I don't think those can be helped. Not how humanity and society and governments work (or don't work).

One way or another, we're fucked and fucked up

Nuclear weapons definitely ended up saving lives during World War 2. A full-scale invasion of Japan would have had way more casualties on both sides. Is that worth killing civilians? You decide, but much worse things were done by every side in the war.

Nuclear energy is the only way forward. Short of creating a Dyson sphere, we have absolutely no other actually good energy sources. It's rather disappointing that a few incidents caused by a) Russian safety standards b) extreme natural disasters + bad safety standards have caused people to shun nuclear energy for no good reason.

Global disarmament is unlikely to work. Is anyone going to trust that the US doesn't still have enough nukes to destroy half the world hidden somewhere? Or Russia? Is anyone going to trust that Pakistan didn't fuck up and keep its nukes usable at which point terrorists get access to them and nobody else does? Now that we actually have nuclear weapons, global disarmament won't work. And hey, at least the UK isn't going to do something monumentally stupid.

Oh. Well. Still, they have a long way to go before they get that bad.

Global disarmament is very possible, but only if people recognize that the real weapon isn't the nuke, but the ICBM it hitches a ride on. The payload is only as useful as its delivery system.

In VGM's hypothetical scenario (and really, the Muv-Luv Alternantive treatment) more futuristic weapons will be able to shoot down ICBMs and drones from a long way away.

Yeah, nice ICBM you got there, imma Rod from God it right over where it launched. Oops!

Realistically we'll run out of food/medicine/space before we nuke each other so it's all gravy.
