Why is UPN dead?
Is it because no one really comes here that much anymore?

They're on Discord, which is this decade's gimmick chat client. Forums are a bit too slow and rule restricted for the spontaneity people desire (which is why Time Out became the highest-traffic topics..) but Skype was ruined by changes. Along with the shut down of AIM, this lead to platform fragmentation.
Even when UPN had Skype, I didn't use it as often as the forums, and I refuse to migrate to Discord due to its data-mine friendly privacy policy. Yes, I can protect myself, but it takes two (twenty+) to tango, and I can't convince the entirety of UPN to use VPNs, speech modulators and revolving pseudonyms. So, the only people I'd regularly talk to would be Morgoth and damicatz. LINE is about as good as a AIM replacement as is possible in 2019, so while my buddy list is rather small compared to the old days, I'm properly airgapped and don't really care about privacy intrusion. UPN isn't exactly secure as an http:// website, but I really don't care at this point. I seriously doubt this website is a target of nefarious identity thieves (even though it's literally been targeted by Al Qaeda in the past).

Discord has really done a number on smaller forums. Social media in general has been ebbing away at forums but Discord was pretty big hit, and this isn't just a UPN thing.
That being said, we do have a lot of people on here regularly during the day. It's just that they don't always post. |

Fansites/forums will always be important regardless of whatever chat clients currently "in"! Chats are horrible places to try an lookup info months/years down the line. Meanwhile seatching on the web proper is much more doable. Forums are chats with the ability to easily re-read stuff and reply to multiple people at once. Not seeing how one could kill the other all of a sudden when they're totally different things an have co-existed in various forms for a loooong time.

I'll agree that Discord has killed forum communities. It's also alienated the people that can't keep up with it, like me. When I come home from work and there are 1000+ missed messages...it's a real turn off.
Also, Hi. Logging on here after a few years ^_^

the secret is to mute your discords, and only focus on the channels that you give a fuck about.
although with the upcoming scandal, discord might run risk of dropping entirely. |

On an aside...it seemed inevitable to me that a client like Discord would get hit sooner or later. I don't have any logical reason behind it. Just a feeling, given how intensely it burned.

Knowing nothing about nothing, if Discord shuts down I feel like Slack is where people will go. Because I've heard of it before. There's no way we're going back to Skype, that would be terrible

discord trust and safety team is the subject of some serious drama that's recently come to light. I'm going to say content warning for that link for various sensitive topics should you actually review most of the images in detail.
But to put it simply, the QuackityHQ situation was symptomatic of a much larger and more egregious problem with the Trust and Safety team it seems.

Discord has a $2B private valuation; I think those victimized children will suffer in silence. This probably won't lead to it shutting down, but as I said before, given Discord's ease of setup and ubiquity, it seemed inevitable something like this would happen.

I mean, definitely, no two ways about it. The issue here is Trust and safety team is basically turning the other way about it and other questionably if not definitely illegal content/activity, but if someone just says you said anything anti-furry, regardless of whether your accuser actually has proof or is even being honest, you will pretty much 100% get banned and allthefoxes will throw any appeal in the trash.
