What you stopped playing

We have a "what are you playing/what did you beat" thread, so why not have a "what did you quit playing" thread? Look deep into your backlogs, find your unfinished/unloved games, and tell us why you dumped them like an unwanted pregnancy on prom night.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition (PC)

This is one of the classics of the adventure game genre, and...I don't like it. They did a good job on the voicework and redrawn assets (though you can seamlessly switch to the "classic" version as desired), although ultimately in the service of dialogue that I didn't find all that funny. Maybe I stopped too early, but IMO Insult Swordfighting (where I kind of petered off and quit) was the only part of the game that I found clever and/or amusing.

Final Fantasy VII (PS1)

I stopped at the last dungeon because I decided I wanted to breed Chocobos for whatever god damn reason. I've never gone back becaus I have this paranoia with RPGs that I've forgotten too much and will simply piss myself off more trying to finish them.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS)

I played through the first dungeon, and that was enough.

Yoshi's Island (DS)

A sequel to one of the best platformers ever made! Oh boy!

...so why does it suck dicks?

Final Fantasy (PSP)

I bought this because it was like five bucks during a Gamestop sale. I have no great fondness for the FF series, so I have no idea why.

Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? (PSP)

OH BOY A NIPPON ICHI PLATFORMER

OH WAIT I DON'T HAVE ANY GREAT FONDNESS FOR PLATFORMERS AND I'M ALREADY KIND OF TIRED OF NI'S "TAKE EVERYTHING TO 11" BULLSHIT

Oh well, it was only 10 bucks during the "please buy a PSP Go, oh God" PSN sale.

Mytran Wars (PSP)

FFT-style gameplay with customizable battlemechs? For me, this should have been the gaming equivalent of steak and a blowjob. Instead, you get a game that feels slow at the best of times, not helped by overly large maps and the fact that like 3/4 of the map tiles are inevitably rough terrain.

Kirby's Avalanche (SNES/Wii VC)

Kirby's Avalanche (and Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and Poyo Poyo whatever-the-fuck-this-was-in-Japan) is apparently my gaming equivalent of candy corn.

Zack and Wiki (Wii)

Remember when you bought games for the Wii in the hopes that developers would take note and make games that weren't complete shit?

...yeah.

That said, apparently I'm not smart enough to figure out that a puzzle game with adventure game style "you have demonstrated mild curiosity, now eat shit" mechanics was probably not a game for me.

Way, way, way too many games to list.

I never beat FFXII despite loving the game and getting most of the hunts done. I wish the PS3 wasn't a flaming sack of shit so I can play PS2 games on it. Been wanting to play it again.

Also I never beat FFXIII because... well... you know.

Never beat:
Final Fantasy VIII (PSX)- Got to disc four but I was pretty much just playing the card game at that point. All of the characters were awful and I wanted to punch them. Except Quistis, she was all right.

Spider Man/X-Men: Arcade's Revenge (SNES)- This game infuriated me to no end, just hilariously difficult, no save spots or anything. Even at my young gaming peak I couldn't beat this game. Still drives me nuts.

Legend of Zelda II (NES)- Took me forever to figure out what I was doing in this game, and by the time I did I had to return it to blockbuster. When I got it back my save file was gone, and I haven't really played it since.

Silent Hill 4: The Room (PS2)- I loved the fuck out of 2 and 3, and 1 was all right. 4... not so much. I might still finish it, but it's just not that fun.

Failures:

Final Fantasy V & VI
- Boooorrrrrrinnnnnggggg.
NiGHTS Into Dreams
- I tried to beat this one really I did. I beat all 6 levels but with sucky ranks so I could never get to open the final level. I tried using action replay cheats even but they mostly just made the game crash -_-
Space Channel 5
- No button prompts = me fail bad.
Gran Turismo 3 & 4
- License tests just get way to hard so progress is forever halted.
Monster Rancher 3
- Great game an all but to hard for me to win. Building up a great monster and finally making it to final tournaments only for it to die just made me give up.
Mega Man & Bass
- Its to hard! I only ever managed to be a single robot master x_x
F-Zero GX
- No explanation needed.
Zelda OOT
- SSSSlllowowwwwww and borrrrinnnggggg
Theme Park
- Stylus controls don't lend well to long play sessions. No fun cheats ta mess around with either like the older versions did.

Mean to get back to:

Sakura Wars ~So Long, My Love~
- Can't beat second boss cause am terrible at tactics. No good guides available but I dun wanna give up.
Suikoden III
- Completely lost & directionless plus grinding isn't feasible since its got the same weird exp system PKMN B/W has.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona
- Need to start over an use a guide cause I was totally lost.

Did you play the original SMI back in the day? Because I don't blame you in the slightest for dropping the remake.

The original SMI was awesome because one goes in expecting a serious adventure game like King's Quest, but from time to time...the characters do weird things that break the roles they're supposed to be playing. And they take everything they say seriously. Adding voices downplays this subverted expectation feel, and the fact that SMI (a parody of adventure games) is now the face for '90s adventure game nostalgia takes away a lot of the effect.

LucasArts also had a "Disney-like" feel to the games, so for kids who would routinely visit Disneyland each year during the Disney Renaissance, it was almost like bizarro world Disney. In this era, where Disney's influence on childhoods has massively diminished, the parody isn't nearly as vibrant.

- Almost every Zelda game I've ever played that is on a hand held. I can only ever seem to beat the console versions..

- Dragon Age 2 - Wasn't as good as the first in my opinion.

- Fallout: New Vegas - My PS3 decided it doesn't like that game enough to stop crashing every 20 minutes.

- Okamiden - Since I moved right after getting it, I forgot about its existence until right now. Plans!

-Rainbow Six Las Vegas
Got a bit annoyed with having to be completely sneaky about everything.

-Bayonetta
I let a friend borrow it. He then went on vacation for a month. Then gave it back. I forgot all the timing and became a newb again. Didn't want to relearn how to beat it.

-Bioshock 2
Lots of bugs. Why no support for PC version?!!!?

-Okami (Wii)
I don't play a lot of games on my Wii not named Smash Brothers Brawl and Monster Hunter Tri.

-Legend of Zelda (NES)
Where is level 7?

-Double Dragon 2 (NES)
Tiger paintings come to life. Ninjas. Why can I only finish the game on Hard mode? Also my NES is borked.

-Boy and his Blob (NES)
No clue what the hell is going on. Why can't I turn the blob into a bulldozer and just run over every enemy?

I stopped playing the original Final Fantasy for NES, because I was a kid and didn't know how RPGs worked. I kept fighting the first boss over and over again and didn't understand why I couldn't beat him. Also, I thought that the Thief's specialty was that he was good at running away from fights.

True story (based on today)

*starts playing disgaea*

Oh hey this is like FFT.

*quits during tutorial*

They somehow managed to make a game more complicated than FFT.

There's quite a few to be listed, but I'll only say a couple.

FFXIII- Doesn't need to be said.

Elder Scrolls Obwivion- It's fun as hell, until I hit the main quest, which becomes repetitive daedra slaughter.

Resonance of Fate- The gameplay consists of spamming hero rush. Nothing more.

Yeah, but once you learn to make a tower of people, you can just throw everyone all around the arena just so the top guy can punch a penguin.

Oh, really? That's weird. What good is that? I would have thought he could pick locks or something.

My Final Fantasy 1 experience wasn't even as big of a disaster as Wizardry 7: Crusaders of the Dark Savant. I did not understand the concept of equipping items, so when I ran afoul of some slime monsters, I tried to "use" my pants during the battle (they'll protect me!).

Now that was truly an epic game. It took me seven years, countless tries, through three different computers to beat it.

If for some reason you want to run away from the fight, i.e. the opponents are good at killing your mage, you're weakened or you just don't want to spend the time attacking imps over and over, the Thief/Ninja have the highest chance of successfully aborting the battle.

FF1 wasn't so bad for me after playing Pokemon, and since I was into 8-Bit Theatre at the time it was even more fun. The emulator I used also allowed some time-skipping features like fast-forwarding through battles and snap saves. I didn't have to suffer nearly as much as people in the 1990's!
