The "Movies I recently saw" thread
In theaters or not, what movies has UPN been checking out lately? As far as I can remember, Patches and myself have recently seen Star Trek, Night at the Museum 2, Wolverine, and others I can't think of. We rented Paul Blart and Shrek 3 (haven't seen either one yet)...but yeah.
Anyone see Up yet? I've heard nothing but positive things so far. Anyways, let the "Everyone's a Critic: UPN edition" commence. |

This summer so far I've seen Star Trek which was pretty good and Terminator Salvation, which was decent at best.
Star Trek's worst times were when the new Bones spoke his catchphrases. They were used poorly IMO. All the worst timing. Terminator Salvation had a lot of dumb moments. The plot was definitely filled with holes and it's only winning points were the fact that it was loud and had lots of explosions, which hardly outweighed the crap. Little things like reference to why Kyle Reese had a strap on his shotgun, which we see in both Terminator 1 and 2 were kind of nice and a few other minor details were pretty cool, but it only made the movie mediocre at best. If you love the Terminator franchise, it's an okay movie, if not, it sucks balls. I skipped Wolverine cuz I heard it sucks. I'm waiting for UP to be on DVD. Don't care for Night at the Museum 2. As for movies I saw through Netflix, I recently watched the Green Mile (never saw it before), Shaw Shank Redemption (watched cuz of that episode of Family Guy lol), and Enemy at the Gates (cuz its cool). Enemy at the Gates was the worst of the three, but not a bad movie, just not as amazing as the other two. |

Lol, poor guy! You basically rented the same movie twice.
Shawshank Redemption = an epic Stephen King-written prison drama The Green Mile = a Stephen King-written prison drama which he wrote a decade after Shawshank and notably borrows a hell of a lot from it while only making one major change -- from having the main character be an innocent man imprisoned to having him be a warden who tries to find ways to skirt the law so a big black neo-Jesus can cure people by sucking up evil. I dunno. I like Shawshank a lot more because I think it's better written (overall) and fantasy/sci-fi elements don't mesh well with gritty prison psychological dramas in my opinion, and The Green Mile was precisely that: very gritty, lots of capital punishment this or homosexual bully that in your face, but all wrapped up within a blanket of flies, immortal mice, and John Travolta / Eric Clapton Phenomenon - "Change the World" curings of cancer from bedridden country white folk.

Shawshank was a better movie, but it's not nearly as well known because of Forrest Gump. I heard for The Green Mile Tom Hanks was deliberately selected so that kind of situation wouldn't happen again.

Wait, what? What you just wrote makes no sense. "Shawshank was better, but it's not as famous as The Green Mile courtesy of Forrest Gump." Okay, that sentence alone I can understand. But then you go on to write, "I heard that they cast Tom Hanks for the lead role of The Green Mile so that that wouldn't happen again."
Time-wise, that defies logic. How could they cast Tom Hanks for The Green Mile in order to ensure that something akin to The Green Mile being more popular than the Shawshank Redemption wouldn't happen again? Motive-wise, it still doesn't make any sense. If Americans widely recognized Tom Hanks because of Forrest Gump, why wouldn't the filmmakers want to tap him for The Green Mile? And why wouldn't they want the phenomenon of an inferior plot faring better at the box office thanks to star power to repeat itself? Isn't that what Hollywood is all about? "Plug some stars into this shitty movie to convince people it's worth 2 hours of their weekend"?

I mean, the producers didn't want Tom Hanks starring in a movie opposite The Green Mile and repeating the mistake of Shawshank. True, he was a good actor and a value to the movie, but what would have happened if, say, Cast Away came out alongside TGM and Hanks didn't star in the latter?

Well all my work is already done for me apparently. But I will add that we never watched Paul Blart and had to return it.

GTFO.
I can't believe they're turning that into a movie. What's it going to be? An hour and a half of everyone in the theater staring at the same picture until someone yells "I FOUND HIM! I FOUND HIM! HE'S RIGHT THERE!", while he is violently escorted out by the theater ushers? I mean... Come on, have you no better ideas? I guess not, seeing as how Candyland and Monopoly are apparently being turned into films as well. Seriously. |

From what little I remember of it, the animated series of Where's Wally was decent.

So the whole movie will be us trying to find Waldo on a giant movie screen?
Can't we just give him a GPS tracker and be done with the franchise? |

IMV, there should have been a live action film for Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?. That would have been a great film.
Wally in UK, Waldo across the pond.

I'm aware, I'm just pointing out that Waldo is a far cooler name than Wally, and Waldo could probably beat the crap out of Wally in a cane fight. |

And I totally blew ABL's mind by commenting that I had seen rule 34 of Waldo x Carmen Sandiego.
She pauses, and comments something to the fact that although it seemed weird, it's actually not a bad pairing. Muyo: "And after the sex is over they team up to play "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego's Bra?" |

Now I'm trying to remember whether Wally and Wanda were romantically involved or not.
