Golden Kamuy
I had some trouble tracking down a batch for this, and I wasn't sure where the second season began or if I even finished the first (I did). The story is just as great as the first season but went in a different direction than I was expecting. In the first season, there are like 5 factions hunting for the gold: -Hishizawa's group to restore the Edo Republic -Lt. Tsurumi's group to start war again -Rebels who wanted it for their own reasons (dead) -Sugimoto's group for personal reasons -Nopperabo's group to fund the Russians Everyone in Sugimoto's group is a plant/traitor in some way: Shiraishi is allied with Hishizawa Kiroranke is allied with Nopperabo Inkaramat is allied with Lt. Tsurumi It really sucks for Asirpa. Everyone except Sugimoto is working against her. Anyway, early in the second season, Sugimoto joins forces with Hishizawa, reducing the conflict to three factions. Nopperabo's group isn't super well known yet. Expanding the cast like this elevated the comedy to new heights. It's strange.

Would you recommend Kamuy to someone who is more of a casual watcher like me? I've always wanted to give it a look since I've heard a number of good things but the premise has never really caught my attention enough to bump it up my list.

Yes, I highly recommend it as an engaging adventure story. It pulls no punches when it comes to violence or comedy and the mortality of the characters (except the titular "Immortal" Sugimoto) keeps the stakes high. There is character development, which I was not expecting.
As a period piece, it's almost like a long essay on the Ainu culture of the late 19th century. The only downside is it's not as beautifully animated as Made in Abyss or Kimetsu no Yaiba, and there's childish humour about adult things, which can be sometimes offputting. Apparently the season 3 blurb says Sugimoto and Asirpa are seperated. Wut? I'm almost at the end of season 2 and nothing like that's happened...

The manga and anime are actually different. I know because one character I looked up who died had a completely different story arc in the manga.
I can't compare the two with just limited exposure, but the anime has done a great job of being to the point without losing any of the manga's nuance, which I presume is... -the Ainu cultural details -the comedy -the character development So if it's tonally and thematically the same, the anime wins here. Of the stuff I've watched lately the anime was the better adaptation. The only things I can think of where the manga is better are like...Kumo, Goblin Slayer and Overlord. So, the fantasy world stuff? ... Golden Kamuy II Rating: Outstanding (9/10) Just as good as the first season, but a little crazier.

I happened to stumble upon a Tumblr that covered what appeared in the last few episodes of the Golden Kamuy anime here which has caused me to walk back on my earlier statement about season 2.
Namely, Spoiler: show If I had known this I would have docked some points. That's a pretty big omission, albeit one that dates back from the early part of the anime.

Ishuzoku Reviewers
This is like, the prototypical man-anime. I'm not sure any woman would like it, but it's about as close to the "exhentai experience" as any anime could get. It plays out like a hentai without the H. Basic premise is adventurers Stunk and Zel live in a fantasy world. Their life goal is to bang as many girls as possible, of as many races as possible. They are their friends hang in bars and rate the girls they've tried out on a scale of 1 to 10, which they post on a tavern bulletin board, much to the annoyance of the waitress and female patrons. Different races of men rate different girls differently - for example, only Stunk seems interested in a 500 year old elf girl, but Zel the elf and Brooz the half-orc prefer the 50 year old human woman (because 50 is young in elf years, and the woman looks like a mature half-orc). Stunk and Zel discover an angel boy, Crim, who fell from heaven. They take him to a brothel where he gets deflowered by a catgirl. They want to use Crim to get into heaven so they can bang the angels. They then take Crim on as a reviewer. This was pretty funny for a one-shot episode, so I wonder how much the premise can work across multiple ones?

omg, this anime is hysterical. I can't believe people aren't giving this 10/10 or 9/10's, the heat is thermometre-cracking. "Meidri has been laying three eggs in her room every month for the past half year." "Those merman got so worked up they creamed in their tanks." Then the other girls get pissed when the 800 year old elf gets second place in the popularity poll, and they call her a hag... Sooo funny and soooooo kinky. lolz1

Ishuzoku Reivewers
RATING: 10/10 (Masterpiece) This show is brilliant, but it's not for everyone. It objectifies women and is blunt and crude. I think women might find it offensive, just like Meidri the harpy barmaid does in the show itself. But it's non-stop hilarity from beginning to end, because the show understands men and how men think/behave. It's annoying that there are so many essay-length complaints about this show on MAL because they're missing the point. Ishuzoku Reviewers is about guys hanging out and rating stuff. The fact that it's banging monster girls is superficial - you could swap the gimmick for anime, hentai, gambling or restaurants. The central dynamics of the main group and their personal preferences are what drive the comedy. This is enough for a show because it's enough for dialogue. When I talk to BPK or BBB on LINE, or debate Talon on the forums, it's the same thing - sharing experiences and trying to push personal preferences. Most of the comedy stems from the differences in reactions and personal preferences. Ishuzoku Reviewers takes that dialogue and gives it attractive anime character designs, creative kinky plot ideas and a steady pace. There is character development in this show, especially for Crim who goes from a timid virgin in the first episode to so thirsty for girls he visits brothels off the clock. Some of the episodes tackle "complex" issues too, like transsexuality, abusive marriage, fleshlight abuse, revenge porn and the girlfriend-like experience. AND FINALLY, every episode ends with Professor Okiido giving an educational lesson on the different types of succu-girls. I guess this world gets isekai travelers too.

Violet Evergarden
I started this. It's the first KyoAni show I've watched since the Disappearance movie, which I thiiiiiiiink was after Amagi Brilliant Park. So it's been 7-8 years since I've watched anything from this studio, and it looks like I haven't missed much. I laughed a lot at it. Not kidding. I could predict the dialogue and some of the scenes were baffling. Like, I remembered very little about this series except that LBC and Loki had previously seen it and I think were tepid towards it? I looked at the old posts but they were spoiler-y so I put reading them on a backburner. It's hard-ish to get into. Does it pick up?

What I'm predicting is a kind of like uhhh...what was it again?
Hanasaku Iroha. Fish out of water girl with TRAGIC PAST bonds with peeps in her new life and gradually opens up. I don't know the relationship of Violet and Maj Gilbert, but I don't think it was romantic. That would be weird, not because of the age gap but because of the absolute ages. The definite weird part is I don't think Maj Gilbert is dead, or that the Evergardens are his family, as the first episode was trying to imply. So much of the melodrama seems wasted on me. I'm fairly sure I'm not wrong and this is going to come back as a twist. Art wise I think it's distracting, to be honest. Not as distracting as the busy character designs and unnecessary "cute" animations, but I much prefer the look of Amagi Brilliant Park. When KyoAni has too much budget, they stuff it in odd places.

I'll reiterate what I probably said previous: It's beautiful, but there's problems. I don't know why the order of events were messed with and I don't know why the filler episodes were so awkwardly out of place. A slightly different reshuffle of the episodes would have made the series overall flow better.
They also made an OVA and film since the series originally aired. The OVA, I've totally forgotten. I can't remember any details besides there being an opera or theater involved. I'll give a proper review maybe if I ever decide to rewatch it, but IDK if I care to. The film was pretty good. Comparable to episode 10. It has a lot of yuri overtones in the first half but it doesn't feel like it leads to anything and I'm not sure why it was included besides inclusion. The second half is nice because Violet almost falls off the planet and other characters get some limelight and it really highlighted to me that the how was still interesting without Violet. This film was also directed by a Haruka Fujita, who is famous for her animation work with hair in the wind and it's used to great effect as a kind of sign in this film. It's very subtle but I like it. It's also the first project that KyoAni fully did post tragic fire, so it's nice to see they're still going strong after that disaster. |

ooof, VE is hard to watch. It's just pure melodrama at this point, and irritating melodrama at that. You would think Violet's problems could be easily solved, but nobody's really perceptive enough to answer her questions. There's a lot of repetition and bashing head on keyboards.
The out of place Japanese cultural is starting to get really irritating. Team, 45 degree bows, miso and ramen...in AU Germany, no less.

It's a purely fictional setting based on post WW1 Europe, but not actually Europe. Also, I'm fairly sure it's more of a Mediterranean setting rather than Germany. Some of the later parts (like the war zone) might be Germany, but not the location of the post office.
I'm fairly sure the miso and ramen are in scenes more for the implications they bring rather than European accuracy. Ramen is seen as a dish for the industrialized world, it's made quickly and provides a lot of calories for the working man. Meanwhile, Miso is the food of the every-man, it's nutritious but low on calories. This makes it a balanced meal of sorts, but primarily it implies that the characters eating it are common workers. While bread would likely be more accurate, it carries a different significance in Japan. Japan considered rice it's staple food rather than bread, but in Japan, bread is seen as a snack food. It's made sweeter than bread from western cultures and is a bit more of a luxury compared to miso or ramen. To a Japanese audience, it would paint the characters as different people if they saw them eating snacks as meals. |

I'm on Episode 3 now and I'm starting to get a sense of the weirdness. This episode is more typical of an Episode 1, since it introduces the "mysterious cool beauty" character who the audience wants to get to know. While also highlighting some of her problems (the over-the-top robotic attitude).
But I still can't get over how for a character whose main issue is an inability to empathize, that no one is shown trying to communicate that to her. Violet has made zero progress in three episodes and that's a big problem. Even Nagato Yuki, almost an actual robot, was less robotic than this. In no small part due to Nagato's willingness to adapt, something I don't detect at all from Violet.

I picked up one show besides Kaguya-sama this season, and it's title is insanely long:
Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta... or... My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! or simply Hamefura. A strange isekai where the main character is reincarnated into being the villainess of an otome game she played. After bumping her head, she remembers her past life and starts plotting to prevent herself from getting the terrible endings which her character got in the coarse of the game. I've found it pretty enjoyable thus far. |

Legend of the Strongest Man Kurosawa
RATING: 8/10 (Excellent) Hard to imagine I started reading this in 2011, but I'm glad I read it now. It's about a middle aged man going through his mid-life crisis, and I've been going through mine since the Marine Corps. I lost a lot of fire after being NPQ'd even though I put up a valiant effort that earned the admiration of my peers and instructors, but that kind of pride can't help you face the reality that comes afterward. And similarly, I can't give this manga top marks because Kurosawa got off easy, avoiding relapsing into his defeatist behaviour or having to further face the realities of his situation. For someone going through the mid-life crisis, this isn't the kind of advice you're looking for. But it's a good starting point, to see a legend unfold. With this, one of the great albatrosses has been lifted from my neck. All that remains is masturbation. Masturbation Master Kurosawa that is. Oh, and Violate Evergarden too I guess.

I...like the filler? Way better than the main story involving Violet, anyway. Like Kino's Journey it shows Violet as a bystander to other issues and I don't mind that at all. The episode involving the princess needed far more show and less tell, though. I predicted the plot within 5 seconds of meeting Charlotte and Alberta, making it irritating when they had to spell it out for the slower viewers.

I needed a break from VEG. I downloaded the anime Loki and Kuno are watching, and watched the camrip of Made in Abyss's third movie, the actual sequel to the main series.
Made in Abyss - Dawn of the Deep Soul RATING: 9/10 (Outstanding) This is a step down from the anime. The script is actually perfect as far as an adaptation of the manga and as a movie, but the artwork isn't any better than the series. You have higher expectations from a movie than a TV anime. Another issue is there's visible CGI in this film. It was used for "acceptable" objects like a door and an ocean, but seeing as the original was either completely hand drawn or blended CGI naturally, this was a huge negative. I couldn't stop thinking about the CGI door. Another issue I had was the Reg vs Bondrewd battle was difficult to follow. This was in contrast to the TV series and the manga, where the details of the battle were easier to follow. I felt like the movie tried to use up the budget in these scenes when they weren't warranted, and it actually detracted rather than added.

Loki sure knows how to pick 'em. This is really fun and doesn't feel like a typical isekai. I don't have a lot to add except I want to point out the artwork, especially for the backgrounds, is really well done - it's done in what looks like colored pencil, undoubtedly to evoke the "visual novel-like" feel of the game within a show, Fortune Lover. I think Clannad was the other big VN that had a similar artstyle, while Akagi no Anne the shoujo anime with that kind of look.

Well, I don't know how far the premise can sustain itself without having Catarina pick a love interest. Presumably episode 8 spilled the beans for Mary and Maria, if they had any doubts before then.
Onani Master Kurosawa I've resolved myself to challenge the unholy trilogy of "tough to read" manga, namely: Onani Master Kurosawa Oyasumi Punpun Planetes Planetes should be the easiest given I've already read most of Vinland Saga, although the workplace setting makes it tougher. Punpun could potentially destroy me, so I opted for the middle road first with Kurosawa. I actually barely read the first chapter before so going forward a lot more things are becoming clear. I'm guessing, Spoiler: show
