The day had arrived for the Raid battle Zak had signed himself and Nancy the Venusaur up for. The pair had arrived at the location of the Power Spot alongside a number of trainers similarly partnered with their own Pokémon of choice and the Venusaur saluted her allies with one of her vines before bringing her focus to the water before them. They found themselves at a gorgeous reef atoll off the Southern coasts of Fizzytopia known to the locals as Typhon's Depths. Before he could spend time taking in the majesty of the area, though, the foe which they had signed up to face rose ominously from the gloom of the lagoon.

The sight of the skyscraper-tall Dragapult sent a chill down the man's spine. Though he was quite a fan of the Ghost-type dragon and had plans to train one of his own some day, seeing one of this size would have surely intimidated even the most fearless of people. Nancy the Venusaur didn't seem as taken aback though as she pawed the ground and faced down her enemy. Zak noticed that her leaves and flower were vibrating slightly with the anticipation of what was to come: even though he was nervous, his Pokémon was ready for whatever stood before her. Seeing this helped to ease the trainer and he patted the Venusaur's muscled shoulder to wish her luck in the bout ahead.

"Alright, let's start things off here shall we, Nanc? Give that overgrown skink a taste of your Dragonbreath (60 BP + Dragon Fang)"

It seemed the turnout for this raid was lower than before, Sil arriving to find only three other trainers with their fellow Pokemon by their side watching the Dreepy as they fly high above their heads, the Dragapult learning at them from the center of the blue hole. She felt a lump in her throat at sight, the dragon’s eyes boring straight into her with malicious intent, and nervously findled with the hem of her shirt, averting her gaze. She caught one of the other trainers shivering as well out of the corner of her eye, feeling a twinge of relief that she wasn’t the only one unnerved by the ghostly kaiju.

Hailstone didn’t consider himself one easily shaken, but the way the Dragapult and Dreepy stared at him sent a chill colder than his icy shell down his spine. Struggling to push aside his fears, he flexed his claws as he mentally prepared himself for the battle ahead. His Ice/Steel typing would definitely give an edge over the Dragapult typing-wise, giving him access to super effective attacks and a resistance to Dragapult’s dragonic attacks. However, Dragon types often have a wide variety of attacks to choose from, including such dreadful moves such as Flamethrower and Fire Blast. While his Steel typing might stave off a wyvern’s claw, in conjunction with his Ice typing it makes an especially meltable pangolin.

“Ice Ball worked pretty well last time, “ Sil said, jolting the Alolan Sandshrew out of his thoughts, “so I’d imagine this dragon will fare no better.”

Dynamax Boss Dragapult
★★★★
Health Gauge: 92%
Shields Up: 0
Status: [N/A]
Trainer Status: [Mist (4 Turns Left)]

Raid Boss Attack Summary:
Attack 1: Dragon Darts (50 BP)
myahoo, Chinchou: 325 HP
SpinyShell, Sandshrew-A: 243 HP
Attack 2: Flamethrower (90 BP)
CCK, Cutiefly: 165 HP

  • myahoo (Chinchou): 325 HP
  • Pearl’s Perap (Venusaur): 500 HP
  • SpinyShell (Sandshrew-A): 243 HP [Ice Ball (1)]

The pair of Dreepy launch from Dragapult’s head at blinding speeds. One of them slams into Chinchou, while the other aimed at Cutiefly, but it veered course at the last second to collide with the Alolan Sandshrew. Dragapult then breathed a scorching Flamethrower that singed Cutiefly.

Hailstone’s Ice Ball landed beautifully, sending the Dragapult into a thrashing fit as it screeched in pain, creating tsunami-sized splashes in its agony that carried the Alolan Sandshrew back to shore. Sil rushed up to meet him, taking care not to trip on the rocks and coral dotting the beach, helping lift him back to his feet as he coughed up seawater. Before they could trodge back up to a dryer spot on the atoll, the dragon let out a furious roar, its Dreepy companions echoing its cry. They flew back to their ally, landing like fighter jets come home to an aircraft carrier in the two holes in the Dragapult’s horns. Its Dreepy secured, the Stealth Pokemon raised its head out of the water and took aim, and then launched them at its opponents. One of the Dreepy headed straight for the Chinchou, swifting hitting its mark, while the other seemed to be aiming at the Cutiefly--that is, until it veered off course and struck Hailstone at the last second.

He was driven into the beach by the force of the blow as sand and droplets of water were flung high into the air, obscuring Sil, who had been standing dangerously close to him. Worried for his partner, he squeaked loudly, desperately attempting to catch her attention.

“I-I’m okay, Hailstone” he heard her call from a little to his left. “I leapt out of the way as soon as I saw the Dreepy eye you.”

Brushing the sand from his eyes, he sighed, relieved that his trainer was alright.

With Sil safe, he turned back to the Dragapult and launched himself at it, aiming to freeze it with a particularly chilly Ice Ball.

The raiders’ Pokemon continue their assault on the Dragapult, with the Chinchou turning giant and coating the battlefield in a Misty Terrain. Dragapult scowls and retaliates, striking the Sandshrew first before launching its Dreepy missiles once more.

SCREEEEE!

The Dragapult did not appreciate the icy assault Hailstone had just inflicted upon it, slamming into him with a vengeful Acrobatics, the blow stinging all the more due to its lack of a held item. The Alolan Sandshrew was thrown backwards, slamming into a particularly hard rock rather than the soft sand with a loud crack. But, as he looked at the rock, he could see no crevice, meaning that his icy shell must have splittered, producing the unnerving sound. Already weakened from the Dragapult’s attacks, as well as the heat emitting from the Flamethrower it used to roast the Cutiefly, he knew that another strong impact could have broken his shell. Fearing the worst, he strained his arms as he attempted to identify the location of the injury. The Alolan Sandshrew winced as he felt his claws sink into a crack on his icy shell near the base of his tail, a crevice only a few centimeters wide and barely one deep. To a non-Sandshrew, such an injury would be seen as more of a scratch, like the grooves dug into a frozen lake’s surface by ice skates. But, to Hailstone, it was an ominous omen, a sign that his most important defense had been broken.

Desperate to patch his weak spot before the dragon struck again, he raced down to the ocean and attempted, unsuccessfully, to scoop up a pawful of seawater. Sil, who had been watching him with concern and knew what he was planning to do, patted his shell before scooping up some water in her hands. She poured it over the break in his shell, watching as the water froze due to the chilly cold temperatures of the shell, filling in the crevice. While the frozen saltwater wasn’t as tough as the ice generated naturally by his body, it would do, for now.

Dynamax Boss Dragapult
★★★★
Health Gauge: 69%
Shields Up: 1

Raid Boss Attack Summary:
Attack 1: Fire Blast (110 BP)

  • Pearl’s Perap (Venusaur): 425 HP
  • SpinyShell (Sandshrew-A): 0 HP [Must sit out 1 round before recovering]

One massive hit from Sandshrew was enough to enrage the Dragapult as it called forth a series of shields. The rest of the Pokemon were almost able to take them out, but a passive Cutiefly quickly fell to the dragon’s flames. The Dragapult then crashed its tail down upon the balled up Sandshrew, breaking through its tough defenses and knocking it out as well.

Hailstone barreled down the beach, running over seaweed-covered rocks, white coral skeletons that stood against the beach sand like bare skeletons, and sun-bleached driftwood as gravity pulled him towards a sloping sand dune, a makeshift ramp. Propelled by momentum, he was flung off the dune, hurtling through the air towards the Dragapult, a target too massive for him to miss. He struck somewhere along the dragon’s horns, hearing it snarl in pain as icy shards sunk into its scales. Uncurling from his ball stance, he tried to grab hold of the Ghost type, sinking his claws into its scales to prevent him from crashing into the sea below. Enraged at this icy bug, the dragon swung its head from side to side as it growled in annoyance, eventually dislodging the Alolan Sandshrew from his clawhold and sending him to the bubbling ocean.

Hailstone desperately paddled as hard as he could to the shore, feeling the Dragapult’s burning gaze on his back. As he felt sand squish between his toes, he couldn’t shake the feeling that the dragon would not let such an attack slide. Left unchecked, his Ice Ball could snowball quickly, and he was nearing the end of his frosty assault, his signature attack almost at full strength. Surely the dragon recognized the danger.

And surely enough, it turned to him with a cruel gleam in its eyes, a snarl forming on its face. Dragon energy began to envelope its body, bathing all of Typhon’s Depths in a royal blue glow, before it rushed at the Alolan Sandshrew with blinding speed. All he saw was a glimmer of blue before he was struck by the Dragon Rush, the attack so powerful that despite his natural resistance to Dragon attacks, he collapsed. The last thing he heard was Sil’s panicked cry.

“Hailstone! No!”

Cheering to break a shield.

With the last shield removed through the power of cheering, the two standing Pokemon continued their assault on the Dragapult, who retaliated in kind before the Chinchou returned to its normal size. With all four Pokemon back on their feet now, hopefully they would be able to keep whittling away at the spectral dragon’s health.

Hailstone was curled comfortably in his Pokéball, resting the burns that had seared him to the point of unconsciousness. Suddenly, his vision went white, and he heard the signature electronic sound that indicated the release of a Pokémon from its spherical home.

Sand squished between his tiny toes as he landed on the beach, a sudden change from the cyberspace he had just been resting in. He inhaled deeply, enjoying the taste of the salty sea air on his tongue, a welcome change from the environment of the Pokéball, which lacked any such scent at all.

While Pokémon were reduced to nothing more data while inside a Pokéball, the device simulated the real world as best it could to make it as comfortable as possible. However, the simulation was resource-heavy on the tiny internal computer, and thus it was limited in its capabilities. Things such as scent and taste were omitted to save data and energy, deemed not as essential for comfort compared to, say, vision by the programmers. And the simulation was oftentimes kept as simple as possible, limited to a single environment that was deemed comfortable for the occupant. So, whenever he was sent out of his Pokéball after spending a long amount of time in it, he always enjoyed the return of all the small things such as scent that he missed.

Sil was watching the Alolan Sandshrew sniff the air and scratch at the hand with an amused look on her face. Unfortunately, she had to cut off his relaxation time a little short, the Dragapult tearing through their allies with powerful attacks.

“Ice Ball has been working really well. Time for another snowball barrage!”

As the trainer of the Cutiefly took a pacifist’s stance against the Dragapult, the monstrous dragon slammed its head down on the unresponsive bug, completely removing it from combat. The Dragapult seemed upset by something, at least more upset than usual. It turned its wide head towards the Cutiefly, who Sil and Hailstone realized, hadn’t attacked, in fact it hadn’t even moved at all last round. In fact, it didn’t move the round before as well. Perhaps it was a defense mechanism, an attempt to hide from the dragon’s eyes. It did make sense to an extent--by not attacking, the Cutiefly had done nothing to the Dragapult to provoke its wrath, and would probably be seen as less of a threat, and therefore be less of a priority to the ghostly kaiju. However, it seemed the opposite had occurred, the Cutiefly had angered the ghost to blind fury.

The Dragapult roared with outrage, its Dreepy allies echoing the monster’s cry, albeit less intimidating sounding. It sung its massive head high before slamming it down on the Cutiefly, sending tons of sand, rock, coral, and sea water into the air. Hailstone and Sil shielded themselves from the downpour, covering their eyes as they got pelted by the debris.

Sil was thankful that she was struck by anything other than sand and saltwater, though judging by Hailstone’s squeaks it appeared he wasn’t as lucky. Once she no longer felt debris collide with her, she slowly uncovered herself, only to see a shocking sight. Both the Cutiefly and its trainer had disappeared--even worse, the swirling Dynamax storm had increased in strength, powerful winds began to pick up and sent the ocean into a frenzy.

“That’s… that’s a really bad sign. Hopefully another Ice Ball can calm down this dragon quick!”
