That Episode IV one wasn't very good, yeah.
It took the first Death Star one full hour to recharge its super-laser. It took 30 minutes to circle the planet to destroy Yavin IV. Seeing as they almost blew up Yavin IV when they finally got into range, there's no way the race to destroy the station would have been nearly as close if they had to wait another 30 minutes for a recharge. Though, destroying Yavin might have harmed Yavin IV in drastic ways... @Empire = LOL

Reading up on NPB, I think Talon might be the only one to get the full funny out of this article:

lol + no way @ his link to the infamous Curse of the Colonel
LOL @ the story behind how the Hanshin Tigers opted to spell/pronounce his name. "Bus explodes," hahaha.

That was pretty cool. I was wondering what his story was and I'm glad he was honest enough to share it with us. Glad to hear that he's two years clean and wishing him the best. Good news for him is, Youtube works wonders. If people pass this link around, it's bound to land in the lap of some son or daughter of a network executive. They'll show Daddy dearest and next thing you know this man'll be scooped off the street and signed for a basic, entry-level contract.
Wow, though. "Golden voice" indeed!

I only started to feel sad when I realized he's 71, most of the years he could have spent using that voice are already behind him, and the substance abuse might shorten what time he's got left. But radio voices can continue to last until their late '80s (how old is the Dodgers' Vin Scully? 86?) so it's true when they say he's set for life.

Apparently the Cleveland Cavaliers have offered the guy full time voice work, with a house that they will pay for. Happy ending for this guy, to say the least.

Yeah, so, I made an M.C. Hammer joke in a chat with Loki tonight and as a result I ... I went and watched this. I know, I know: I'm going to hell. But man, what a fun beat.

Wow, that's actually worse than I remember BabelFish ever being. And that's impressive considering how BabelFish is still the butt of so many translational jokes.

Why? I mean, if you don't mind my asking. It seems so random for either of you to be like, "Hey! Let's test this out with the final fight scene from Aladdin!" Was it one of the videos people were memetically passing around at some point in the past or something?
What disappoints me most about the technology isn't that it mistranslates things but that there's so much spoken dialogue which it doesn't even pick up on. It seems like there are so, so many times in that video where somebody will say something, it will get translated, and then nothing else will come along to replace the translation for a good 5-10 seconds even though words are still being spoken by multiple characters.

It wasn't that video - I don't recall which one it is but it was pretty funny. Some of the interpretation was pretty hilarious. |

That's pretty dumb. Even if the dispatch office wants to claim copyright on the video, that doesn't mean that they necessarily want it taken down. And I can't imagine that they would: they stand to benefit from the positive PR as much as Mr. Williams has. After all, they're the Good Samaritans who took the camera out and filmed Ted and uploaded him to Youtube to give him some widespread exposure.
So if I had to guess, what probably happened was that a copyright claim was filed and that Youtube "shoot first, ask questions later" took the video down. Why the officer's superiors felt the need to invoke copyright over him is beyond me, but I don't think they planned for the video to be taken down as a result of their dibs. If the original video isn't restored by tomorrow, I would be very surprised.

'Completely irresponsible' woman called emergency services to report theft of snowman
After you read that, be sure to read the BBC version here. You can even listen to the woman phone 999!

A team of Japanese software developers are going to hell for crossing a line that oughtn't to have been crossed. (For more details, check out Introduction and How To Play.)
Funny thing is, I just learned about tsukumogami myself not but one to one and a half weeks ago when I read a story about a tsukumogami and had to look up the word. And no, I am not playing this. No interest in things like this. They remind me of an old Wendy's advertisement for cheeseburgers. The ad claimed that Wendy's had 256 different burgers on their menu -- because they have eight different ingredients which you can either say "yes" or "no" to having on your burger. I see this sort of thing the same way. Long hair, short hair, brown eyes, blue eyes, big boobs, small boobs: it's like a burger-making factory, not a real game.

I love ASL and am trying to pick up bits and pieces, so I love watching these kinds of videos, but I must say, I'm surprised to see this song done.
Nice to know swear words though! EDIT: I was curious to find a few more and I found this guy. He speaks straight up ASL (no or little Signed English here!) and his interpretations of these songs seem pretty poetic and are far from literal but fit the language really well. I like to see how he translates it because a lot of the songs he does are definitely not simple, language-wise. And he's cute so that's a plus (for me).

Data's Sex Life
Pretty sure I've seen this before. It may even have been posted in one of the earlier incarnations of the Going to Hell thread. But I rediscovered it this morning by complete chance and ... Well, I was in tears at this one scene. Don't want to ruin it for you so don't click the box until you've seen the movie! Spoiler: show
