Lockdown made global warming worse

Everyone's intuition is that stopping all air travel and most car travel put climate change on pause, but that would be wrong.

It turns out that global temperatures are high enough that we're already in a positive feedback loop. Temperatures were sufficient to stimulate methane release from tropical jungles.

As it turns out, this methane is removed from the atmosphere by hydroxyl radicals, which are sourced from nitrogen oxide - one of the byproducts of fuel combustion.

So even though gasoline travel dumps co2 into the atmosphere, it's actually better than the alternative of letting the much more powerful methane stay in the atmosphere to absorb heat. Methane later breaks down into carbon dixode anyway.

I guess electric cars won't be the silver bullet people hope for. They might make things worse!
