Yep, even if Ash loses to Kukui, which I suspect will happen, I'll be fine with it. I just need to see Torracat settle its rivalry with Incineroar. Then Pikachu can lose to whatever his mystery 6th pokemon is.

I know he just won the league and all but if they actually have him winning this battle I'll be so disappointed, Kukui's team is just straight up better IMO

There are some caveats to that picture.
It's my speculation that it's a Mega Lucario, but I'm pretty certain it's going to be a Mega, seeing as it jobbed super hard to Guzzlord in its base form. I can't believe a regular Lucario who gets OHKO by a tongue is powerful enough to take out a different species of Ultra Beast. I think Kukui's actual 6th Pokemon is a Trevenant, because of how significant Trevenant was to him in his childhood, alongside this: Ash also gets good matchups. For a team with two Grass and a Water-type, Kukui sends out the Flying-type to deal with Lycanroc. Ash also gets Rowlet and Torracat vs. Venusaur, and Pikachu v. Empoleon. I think Ash's team is much better than a team with Lucario-Trevenant. You tip the odds with Mega Lucario and Kukui's team becomes outright stronger with Koko in the mix.

The great thing about Kukui is he isn’t ridiculously overpowered like past series final rivals Ash battles in the league. His Incineroar aside the rest of his Pokémon fall to ash’s pretty easily, and keep in mind Ash’s SM team is far from his strongest team in general.
Kukui is definitely the weakest champion of them all compared to Cynthia, Steven, Lance, etc and that’s a good thing. It’s realistic and he’s having fun but he’s not portrayed as an invincible character. Hell both Paul and Alain would make short work of Kukui. |

There actually isn't evidence that Kukui is "weaker" when Ash is going in with legendaries who OHKO fully evolved starters.
If we're being conservative, Kukui's Empoleon is no weaker than Barry's. Melmetal took no damage and destroyed it through a x4 Steel resistance. Literally wtf.

Is there even any confirmation that Koko's involved in the champion fight, and it isn't just a rehash from the games where you go from the champion fight straight into a duel with Tapu Koko? Maybe Koko turns up afterwards and challenges Ash.

-Kukui or Ash have to battle again right after losing? No time to let the loss sink in? -Pikachu has to recover to full health right after being KO'd? -Why wasn't Kukui's 6th pokemon revealed? Koko as the final boss is definitely a reference to how it happened in the SM games. But it's not a real "legendary" battle unless someone is commanding the legend, and Koko needs a person to use a Z-Move. We're probably getting Guardian of Alola v. Raigeki.

Wow, Tomioka and Iwane knocked this one out of the park.
This was amazing. I think the Torracat Vs. Incineroar battle is right up there with some of the best battles of the anime in general, and they played the Ash Greninja theme during the fight making it even more epic. Torracat finally got its revenge on Incineroar and the rivalry came full circle. I just have to say I love what happened at the end with Spoiler: show I also can't believe how well hidden it was, usually spoilers in episode summaries, episode titles, or previews give away what's going to happen, but this is one of the first time in years something happened to one of Ash's pokemon that legitimately surprised me. I also love how it stood up roaring at the end, it was like a rite of passage. So in the end Ash's SM team actually turned out to be one of his strongest teams, even with Rowlett staying unevolved. Too bad SM only has 2 episodes left or so after the Kukui match, but this was satisfying. I also have to say Ash vs. Kukui is also becoming one of my favorite battles of the anime, this is right up there with Ash Vs. Paul and Ash vs. Alan. |

I haven't clicked that spoiler yet. I thought the episode was kind of cruddy so far but my jaw is on the floor at the 17:30 mark.

Luckily I got to rewatch the episode a few times, it holds up. I was annoyed by the budget cuts like to classmates, but it's passable now.
This is #1. Not even the biggest fanboy for another region could say otherwise. Ash is going in to Tapu Koko with 2 Pokemon, including a fresh Pikachu. That is unreal.

Personally Ash's strongest grass pokemon are probably Bulbasaur or Sceptile, so Rowlett is not on par with them. It's probably on par with Snivy to be honest, and a little stronger than Bayleef.
And of fire pokemon it's still obvious Charizard and Infernape are top tier, so Ash's fire cat is probably right below them. The rest don't really have equivilants on previous teams because he never had ultra beasts or a steel pokemon before, so it's hard to rank them. Dusk Lycanroc is top tier too though. |

Rowlet actually fought a Venusaur and only lost because it knew Sludge Bomb. Bulbasaur and Sceptile only know Normal/Grass-type moves, so Rowlet having a powerful Flying/Grass STAB already puts it on top.
The cat could be #1, but he'll never get a chance to prove it. The next 10 years will be debates as to Ash's strongest Fire starter.

Naganadel and Melmetal by themselves make this the strongest team he ever put together, without taking into account plot-device Lycanroc. TBH they could retire the character at this point because the only way it gets better is making half of his team composed of Legendaries rather than a third.

Ash isn't going to retire, but I think this is a good time for us to do so. This season, this league, and this ending is the closure I've been craving since the cruel deferral that was Johto.
I'm sure the new season will be fun and fine, but after seeing the best I feel like I can graduate from Pokemon on a high note.

he'll win but then lose to masked royal and kukui will take over as champ as a result and ash will move on. He's gonna get Blue-balled. Like, literally get the Blue treatment.
