Additionally, as MG said, a lot of people lose weight be replacing their normally sugary drinks (soda, juice, etc) with water so then they intake a reduced amount of sugar, which goes a long way in weight loss.

Also Diet Drinks are pretty bad for weight loss too, possibly even worse than sugary regular sodas, because the aspertaime tricks your body into craving more calories.

Water is great drink lots of water!

They're only worse than regular soda if the person in question doesn't have enough self-control to not eat those other calories. Diet Coke has 0 calories, Coke has 200 calories. In my experience, diet soda has had little or no effect on my weight loss because I manage to not eat extra calories because of it. Nor have I ever craved more calories just because I was drinking diet soda...

Protein- and a lot of it- is generally the way to go if you want to gain weight healthily.

I saw a video of this guy JJ Watt jump four feet into the air on a box jump. I want to do that! I've been reading things that say I should be doing my exercises as fast as possible to develop that explosive power. It's something I'll definitely consider.

So I've successfully dropped all the way to 170lbs!

I'd like to lose ten more, but even my dad looks at me weirdly when I say as such, so. Still, it's nice to not be approaching 200 anymore.

If any of you guys see a girl your age wearing something like this while at the gym, you know what to do.

Think about talking to her for 15 minutes and then decide against it? Ok.

Let's try a different scenario.

There's only two people in the gym, you and this girl. It's time to bench press and you need a spotter. Do you ask her?

I don't bench press, I'm not that hardcore.

I pretty much don't do anything that requires the help of someone else if I don't have to (this goes for things outside of exercise as well).

The gym doesn't have a machine for bench pressing so you don't need a spotter? What kind of low end gym is this?

Sounds like my kind of gym. Free weights are superior to machines. They force you to use your stabilizer muscles to balance the weight, unlike machines which are on a track and make you perform the lift in a rigid and unnatural way.

I said I don't bench press, not that the gym doesn't have a machine for bench pressing. I use one of these for pec workouts instead.

EDIT: There are also free weights available, but I use those for lifting. I agree that the machines make you move weird but it seems to be working fine for me.

Machines are better than nothing, but you should try to use free weights as much as possible. Shoulder press machine? Do overhead press with dumbells or a barbell instead. Leg extension machine? Go to the squat rack and do some barbell squats instead, son!

"There is simply no other exercise, and certainly no machine, that produces the level of central nervous system activity, improved balance and coordination, skeletal loading and bone density enhancement, muscular stimulation and growth, connective tissue stress and strength, psychological demand and toughness, and overall systemic conditioning than the correctly performed full squat."

I went back to the gym yesterday having been out for a month. I managed to push through a 60 minute workout without a) passing out or b) damaging anything so I'm hopeful I'll be able to get back in to the swing of it. In the past I've done 90 minute workouts but I'm trying to bring it down to 60 but with the same level of exercise by the end of it so I'm ramping up the difficulty a little. Currently doing about 20 minutes cardio/warm up and then progressing through a total body work out on various machines this new gym I'm at has and then finishing on free weights and floor work. It's a decent enough plan so far, particularly as I'm not really looking to bulk significantly or suddenly run a marathon.

It helps that, at my new flat, the shower isn't attached to the wall so you have to hold it up (ugh), but at the gym there are nice showers that you don't have to hold. I'm going to try and get in to the habit of going early in the morning, doing the 60 minutes, showering then going to work.

I was going to buy one of those but then I remembered A) I look horrible in tank tops and B) I don't go to the gym near enough to justify it.

You could always try to screen your own. Find a nice workout shirt (desired color) and screen on either black or else white.

So, I am sorry for my absence, but it is only due to the massive amount of time my other hobbies(and school) are taking up. Anyway, In my school, I am, and was never seen as a healthy, or fit guy. But that's only because in highschool, people are only worried about upper body strength. I am a cyclist, and have quite muscular legs now, and also endurance, and stamina levels have gone up. I currently weigh 160lb, but that goes up and down depending on how much I poop. For those who are trying to lose puppy fat during the winter, no fear, because it is entirely possible. I suggest HIIT(High Intensity Interval Training), as it cuts down fat extremely well, and keeps muscle intact over the cold and dreary months. I know people say that Coke is bad for you, but during long Bike rides, I tend to bring a coke with me as it gives much needed sugar levels, and caffeine. One last thing, it's best to eat right after a training session, as the muscles are usually still working, or burning calories.
