lilbluecorsola: Deciding that the living conditions of these two brothers, specifically their isolation, could have a little something, if not everything, to do with the fact they've quite obviously lost their marbles, you figure it can't hurt to invite them along with you while trying to find your way out of this Godforsaken old house. Alice and Bobble are far from impressed, trusting neither Slowbro after the witnessing their antics during the past few minutes, but reluctantly agree because of their devotion to you. Both Slowbro are taken completely by surprise by your question, the dumbfounded look they exchange giving you the impression they'd never even considered leaving this little room of theirs. The Slowbro on the right shakes his head fearfully, utterly terrified at the thought of leaving his comfort zone, but the grumpy Slowbro on the left seems to be considering your invitation. At this point Alice, though sighing inwardly at having to perform such a persuasive task, puts on her most feminine guise and shuffles forward. Holding her dress daintily, she looks up at the brothers and gives them both her most charming glance with a gentle swish of her head. Smiling coyly at them, Alice plays coquettishly with her hair, making full use of her Attractiveness in order to reel them in. Bobble is dumbstruck, and if truth be told just a little bit jealous, at witnessing Alice's more seductive side, his jaw practically dropping to the floor while watching the sexy little thing in front of him playing a rather convincing role.

"We really could use somebody to guide us... And you boys seem quite capable." Alice says sweetly. "Wouldn’t you like to come with us a little ways, so that we can chat a bit more?" Lowering her head demurely, she smiles invitingly at the twins. "It would really be a shame for us to part ways so soon after we’ve met, don’t you think?"

While Bobble is trying to control his rapidly beating heart, at least one of the Slowbro is won over by Alice's performance, the grumpy brother's personality doing a complete one eighty as he smiles charmingly down at Alice. It seems Bobble has his work cut out for him with Don Juan here, as Slowbro reaches behind his back and pulls a red rose out of thin air, handing it to her with a gallant bow. Alice shoots you a concerned glance while he's not looking, clearly conveying the message that you owe her big time for this one, before she graciously accepts the rose with a shy smile.

"I will be honoured to accompany you, my lady," Slowbro replies with a smile, completely ignoring his twin who balks upon hearing his brothers response.

"They're leading you into a trap!" cries the second brother, trying to talk his twin out of leaving, but his brother will have none of it.

"Oh, you're just jealous because someone has finally seen through your charade," replies the first while following the three of you through the doorway he'd previously been guarding. "Goodbye, brother."

The second Slowbro isn't so friendly anymore, his string of obscenities suddenly silenced as the door swings shut behind the four of you, much to your relief. You're still not so sure you've made the right decision by inviting Slowbro to travel with you, but he appears to be quite taken with Alice so you doubt he'll do anything to harm any of you, although that doesn't stop Bobble from watching him like a hawk. Taking in your new surroundings, you're disappointed to discover that there still doesn't appear to be any stairs leading up into the house and to eventual freedom, only a single stained glass door on the opposite side of the room. The walls, ceiling, and floor also appear to be made of an opaque glass, but other than that there is nothing of interest in here. Sighing, you look to Slowbro for some guidance but he appears to be just as mystified as you. Seems he really hadn't gotten out much at all. Walking toward the door you hear the sound of rushing water and spy a stream of it entering the room through a small hole in corner of the ceiling. Suddenly realising this room is nothing more than a giant fish tank you run for the door only to find it locked tight. Slowbro attempts to shatter the glass with his Psychic attack, but nothing happens. It's then that you notice some writing within the pattern on the door. Surrounded by shapes of the moon and stars is a flaming ball from which rays are emitting, and within the fiery ball are the words:

When the tide has engulfed all but one
A bolt of light must strike the sun,
Only then a path will lead the way
Out into the light of day.
Jessica sweatdropped as the first Slowbro suddenly produced a mysterious rose out of nowhere, arching his back courteously as he charismatically presented the gift to Alice. The Ralts threw an awkward glance at her trainer while her suitor’s eyes were focused on the tiles, plainly indicating that Jess owed her significantly for this. The girl hastily transmitted a mental apology as she watched Alice shyly receive the flower, skillfully endeavoring to conceal her misgivings whilst the amiable Slowbro carried on gazing affectionately at her.

"I will be honoured to accompany you, my lady," he responded with a pleasant smile, to which his twin recoiled in shock.

"They're leading you into a trap!" contended the second brother, attempting to convince his twin to delay, but his brother obstinately declined his warning.

"Oh, you're just jealous because someone has finally seen through your charade," he superiorly declared, trailing after Jess and her Pokémon through the egress he had formerly minded. "Goodbye, brother."

An eruption of vulgarisms pursued the group until the door slammed immediately shut after them, stifling his resentment. Jessica breathed a sigh of relief, and inquiringly regarded her surroundings. A square cube of glass, punctuated only by an enameled door facing opposite their location. Mystified, she directed her question towards Slowbro, who appeared too enraptured by his company to pay much attention to the environment. From behind his shades, Bobble fixed the paramour with an incessantly jealous stare, notwithstanding Alice’s adamant psychic assurances. Jessica sternly caught the Slowbro’s eye and he glanced dazedly about, evidently bewildered by the unfamiliar context. She sighed, realizing his experience (or lack thereof) would ultimately prove useless in this situation.

Progressing towards the door, she stopped as a surging sound arrested her attention. Hunting for its source, she discovered a small crack in the ceiling that admitted a steady stream of water to pour intrusively into the room. Recognizing the space’s design, she hastened to the outlet, frantically tugging on its frozen handle in anticipation of release. It refused to give way, and though their new companion tried to assist by bending the glass with his mental influence, his compelling attempt only met with similar resistance. The girl’s despairing gaze examined the doorway, and immediately noticed an elaborate celestial arrangement orbiting curious instructions. Imprinted on the glass was a fiery circle enclosed by the moon and stars. Within the circle, puzzling lyrics appeared:

When the tide has engulfed all but one
A bolt of light must strike the sun,
Only then a path will lead the way
Out into the light of day.

A bolt of light… THUNDERBOLT? But how to keep the user above water? Not only that, but surely the electricity would pose a danger to the submerged as well. Jessica glanced towards Bobble, the only creature among them whom she knew was so far was capable of summoning an ample voltage. However, his ability required a view of the sky as well in order to succeed. And unforuntately, ceiling successfully prevented that.

Water was beginning to pool around her legs. There wasn’t time left to lose. Alice and Bobble had anxiously retreated from the expanding pool to flank the girl’s sides, and Jess cast desperately about, unable to observe any save haven for them.

“Can you guys swim?” she asked, concerned for their safety. The two worriedly shook their heads, and she frowned, quickly retrieving their Pokéballs. At the very least she could try to protect them from drowning immediately, she thought as she recalled them to their shelters. She assumed Slowbro would be fine for a while due to his natural affinity for water, so that only left herself to agonize about.

Jessica swiftly considered her team. She possessed only one flier who could maintain a distance above water, however he certainly didn’t wasn’t familiar with any electric-type moves. The only other suitable candidate for that was…

She gazed at the sphere in her hand, lightly pink and embellished endearingly with a heart. Though it still felt a little early, she understood now was the time. Pressing the key, a burst of light instantly expanded forth, gathering into the form of a sleeping Togepi. As she stared at the innocent face snoozing quietly in her arms, she sensed a pure abundance of love radiating from his tiny body in every direction. Her lips tenderly kissed his forehead, whispering gently, “Wake up, Hermes. Its time for you to earn your wings.”

Drowsy eyes opened, and blissfully regarded their trainer. He nodded once and smiled in appreciation, and she gradually lifted him into a loving embrace. An angelic radiance abruptly filled the corridor, brightening the escalating pool until it was blessed white. When the holiness receded, a seraph hovered smiling above the pool, shining luminously with purity and warmth. Jessica gazed into her angel’s eyes, pride and sadness encompassing her heart. She lightly brushed his soft cheek, inaudibly communicating her faith in him.

“Hermes, will you FLY above the water for now? Please use THUNDERBOLT to strike the sun on the door the moment you see the water level rise over us. Do not worry, I’ll be fine. Please look after us.”

She turned towards the Slowbro. A degree of trust had formed since she witnessed his valiant efforts to aid them, and she offered him a desperate smile.

“Could you please let me hold onto your shell once we have to start to swim? I’m really scared of being underwater…”

Silver Wind: Loretta is clearly relieved that you're apparently willing to take her word for what's going on. She realises it's a far-fetched story, especially for a newcomer to Elyra who really has no idea of the strange happenings in the land recently, so the fact you're willing to take her at her word, at least for the time being, is saving her the trouble of having to convince you. Surprised that you've entrusted Butters to her care, she hesitates for a moment before thinking it over. It probably is best to leave him with her for now anyway considering those responsible for the Teddi napping don't really see her as a Teddiursa kind of girl and wouldn't suspect for a moment that she'd have one on her. She reluctantly agrees, gingerly accepting Butters' Pokéball before shoving it deep into her pocket. She listens intently to what you're saying as you lay out your plan, but the moment you mention trying to forcibly persuade the information out of them, shakes her head.

"They're very strong so you won't have a chance of beating them either physically or in battle unless you have a high levelled, fully trained team at your disposal. Our best bet will be to follow them to find out where they're staying. Once we have that information we may be able to infiltrate their organisation and discover what they're really up to. They know me, so I can't follow them or they'll become suspicious if they catch me tailing them, but you're new to Elyra so you may have a better chance of sliding under their radar. Of course if you're confident you'll stand a good chance against them I'll give you a fifteen minute head start before dropping word of a newcomer having some rare Pokémon in his possession, but if you do decide to ambush them in the Spiritual Hills and don't already have a flying type, then I'd suggest you find yourself one on the way. Otherwise we'll just bide our time, wait for them to leave the ranch, and see where they go. Does that sound okay to you?"
Disappointment quickly consumed Red as he heard his plan would fail. He could not help but wonder if Loretta knew something that she didn’t know. Then, he remembered what a wise old woman once said "Better never to have met you in my dream than to wake and reach for hands that are not there." What sense that made to Red at the time wasn't really thought till now. This vital information she'd given finally made sense. Then, he took out Bandi’s VampireBall and sent him out. Bandit often liked to make a scene upon release and even has his own pose down to the last perfection. With a little spin of his and a double somersault itno a stance that was a mix of cuteness with a touch of tough. “Lets try to blend in, shall we?”

“Ssssquirt” Bandit exclaimed happily as he showed his little fangs with pride.

"Bandit, this is Loretta. We're going to be helping her with something alright?"

The little turtle smiled and nodded happily.

"Alright Loretta, it'd probably be best if we didn't rush into things anyways. I was alittle curious though about something. Has anyone else ever tried to get their pokemon back from these people? Or do the peopel of Elyra just let these things happen without consequence?" Red asked as he smiled. "I mean all this doesn't seem to make much sense, you'd think there would be a angry mob of trainers that would be fighting to get them back. Unless.." he paused, thinking why there was no rebelion, and a good reason would be death. There might not be anyone here to fight for them. "If there is anyone that is still around to help, that would be great. Maybe you know of some of these people?" he paused waiting for a reply.

Red felt a tug at his pants, Bandit was trying to get his attention. He pointed around furiously exclaimed happily as he giggled while looking at Red mischievously. With all that he has learned he had forgotten why he had come here in the first place. For a Steed that he could use during his travels. Seems Bandit had the right idea. Hopefully this little mission doesn't turn into a huge Debouillet he sighed. "Hey Loretta I know nows not the best time, but perhaps you can show me some of the horses you raise around here? I've always been interested in Rapidash but could never find the time to raise one myself." Red said as he laughed while looking aaround to see if there were any around.

Elyra Field - Please reply in lemonchiffon

Silver Wind: Loretta smiles upon witnessing Squirt's enthusiastic arrival on the scene, bending down to pet him on the head and introduce herself, but the moment you ask about anyone having tried to stand up to these people a dark expression crosses her face. She stands up, her smile gone, her eyes taking on a faraway look as her mind recalls past events. You recognise the intense misery in her eyes as belonging to someone who has suffered a deep loss, and almost immediately wish you hadn't asked, but your curiosity is getting the better of you now.

"Some have tried," she replies quietly. "But all have failed." She falls silent for several seconds while you wait for her to continue which she doesn't seem to want to do, but knowing that you're waiting for a response she adds, "If they're not immediately killed they're taken prisoner and never seen again."

At that moment Squirt becomes excited, tugging on your pants to grab your attention and pointing at the stalls, giggling mischievously. With all that's happened you'd forgotten why you'd originally come to the ranch and decide to change the subject seeing as Loretta doesn't seem to be responding very well to your most recent question. Upon asking about the Rapidash raised at Laramie Ranch, Loretta's entire expression changes, a flood of both relief and love crossing her face at the prospect of changing the subject to her beloved steeds.

"Well, this is Cyclone," she replies, guiding you over to one of the stalls holding one of the most gorgeous horses you've ever seen in your life. "The name is fitting," she laughs. "He runs like the wind." She leans over the stall door and calls Cyclone over who quite willingly comes to her, rubbing his nose affectionately against her face which now takes on a clearly delighted expression. She strokes his neck, returning his attention before looking back at you. "He's won championships all across the land, as well as several contests, and is one of our most prized Rapidash." Giving Cyclone a final pat she moves three stalls over and stops again.

"This is Celeste," Loretta continues, affectionately stroking the nose of the Rapidash in the stall. You notice this horse has a star shaped orange-red patch between her eyes, just below her horn which, given your unfamiliarity with horses, even you recognise to be unusual. "Celeste has also won her fair share of championships as well as a couple of contests, and still has many more to go," Loretta continues. "She's barely even two years old but she's extraordinarily skilled for her age." Moving on to another stall, Loretta stops again, gazing adoringly at the Ponyta inside.

"And this is Kindle," she says, her eyes lighting up whilst watching Ponyta who trots up to the stall door and starts nudging her, hinting for some treats. "Such a bundle of energy, this one," she laughs, patting him affectionately. "Always getting himself into trouble, but just scraping through every time. I sometimes wonder if we'll ever be able to fully train him, but the fun part is trying. There's never a dull moment with him around," she finishes, turning back to you with a thoughtful expression.

"The rest of the horses are out in the grounds," Loretta says, looking you up and down curiously. "Have you ridden before?" she asks, genuinely interested in your response. "There are some amateur races taking place in about half an hour if you'd like to give it a go..."

lilbluecorsola: Bobble's jealousy is the least of your worries at the moment, as the steady stream of water entering the room will surely seal your fate if you don't act immediately. You mull over the words of the riddle while examining the design in the door, coming to the swift conclusion that its only possible meaning is to shoot a Thunderbolt at the flaming sun at just the right moment. However, if the riddle is to be believed, the only way this will work is if only one living being present in the room is left above water to perform the attack. Fear fills your heart, for even though you're concerned for your own safety, the thought of your teammates being harmed just isn't something you're willing to consider. Since neither Alice or Bobble are able to swim, you waste no time in returning them to their respective Pokéballs, noting a hint of disappointment pass across Slowbro's face as Alice disappears into hers, before your mind quickly recalls the movesets of your remaining teammates.

When the tide has engulfed all but one
A bolt of light must strike the sun.

You're going to need a Pokémon who can remain either afloat of airborne who can also use Thunderbolt, and even though you're fully aware of the danger of an electric attack being used in a flooded room while you're underwater, you figure you'll cross that bridge when you come to it. Your mind is spinning, a multitude of thoughts swirling through your mind in a matter of seconds, and with the water level now up to your knees you know you're going to have to act fast. With only one option available to you, with an air of regret at having to do this much earlier than planned, you're thankful you'd taken the time to give this little one all the love you have to offer. Being at his maximum state of happiness it's only been a matter of playing the waiting game, until you're both ready for the inevitable to occur - and that time is now. Gently plucking the Love Ball from your belt you gaze at it for several seconds, feeling the water rising to your waist before finally triggering the release mechanism and releasing the sleeping Togepi into the room. While he lies contentedly in your arms, you can feel the love radiating out of his tiny body, your own heart swelling with the same overwhelming affection you feel coming from him. Tenderly kissing his forehead you whisper, "Wake up, Hermes. Its time for you to earn your wings."

Hermes' eyes flutter open, his sleepy gaze taking in the expression on your face. He smiles and nods, understanding and appreciating what you're asking of him, and when you lift him into your loving embrace a brilliant light erupts from your arms, spilling into the chamber. Hermes rises from your arms, the light surrounding him elongating as his body changes form. His legs, neck and head become longer and thinner, his stubby little arms forming into wings, a tail sprouting as the remains of his shell falls away, and his skin changing from a light tan to a milky white. As the radiant glow fades away, you find yourself looking upon Hermes' newly evolved form, a hint of sadness entering your heart while you gaze at him with loving pride. Reaching out, you gently brush his soft cheek, communicating your faith in him through your touch before drawing his attention to the matter at hand. Upon realising the danger his trainer is in Hermes' eyes cloud with concern, but he nods his understanding in regards to your instructions. By now the water is just below your neck, and your fear is mounting as the very real prospect of drowning really starts to sink in. Hermes hovers above the water, never taking his eyes off you as you turn to Slowbro and ask if you can hold onto his shell.

"Of course, my lady," Slowbro replies, a strained smile on his face. You can see he's just as concerned for your safety as Hermes, and just as baffled by this puzzling room as you are, but he turns around allowing you to take hold of him just as the water begins to lap against your throat. You feel your feet lift off the floor as you begin to float on the surface of the water with Slowbro, the riddle going round and round in your mind until eventually you start repeating it out softly to yourself as the water level continues to rise.

When the tide has engulfed all but one
A bolt of light must strike the sun,
Only then a path will lead the way
Out into the light of day.

Suddenly, Slowbro goes rigid as the words you're repeating start to sink in. "This isn't going to work..." he says fearfully, his eyes upon Hermes who now has less than two metres of headspace in which to hover. "When the tide has engulfed all but one," he says slowly. "I am a water type, so cannot succumb to the tide. I should never have come with you, my lady! My presence here has put you in peril's path!"

With a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach you realise he's right, and with this realisation comes terror for this means that both you and Hermes must be engulfed by the tide if this is to play out accurately which only leaves Slowbro left to Thunderbolt the sun. If there's one thing you've learned about this freaky house, it's that you must play by the rules, and the rules are quite clear in this matter. The only problem is that Slowbro doesn't learn Thunderbolt...

The three of you exchange fearful glances for the next several seconds, the water level now so high that Hermes' head is touching the ceiling and his feet are dipping into the water, when Slowbro suddenly shouts, "I've got it!" He turns around, grasping you in his arms, and looks up at Hermes. "When we disappear beneath the water, wait five seconds and fire off your attack!" Hermes shakes his head vigorously, not liking the sound of this, but also terrified he's going to kill his trainer if he shoots a Thunderbolt into the water while you're submerged. "The rules say, 'When the tide engulfs all but one,'" Slowbro replies urgently. "They don't say how you're engulfed, just that one of us needs to be above the water." He looks up at Hermes. "That one must be you. I'll hold the little lady under, form a protective circle around her to protect her lungs from water and her body from electricity, then you can fire your attack."

Realising this could be your only chance, you nod at Hermes who now has so little room to move that if you don't act fast will be in danger himself. Slowbro wraps his arms around you and asks, "Are you ready?" to which you respond with a nod before taking a deep breath and feeling yourself being dragged underwater. Your initial fear is soon replaced with relief when you feel a warm glow radiating through you as Slowbro's Protective barrier goes into effect. The semi-transparent shield moves outwards, circling around you both, and the next second you find you don't even need to hold your breath within the protective bubble he's created for you. A few seconds later you see a bolt of electricity shooting toward the door, the water filled room buzzing with electricity as Hermes' Thunderbolt hits its mark. You can see the electrical currents crackling against Slowbro's Protective shield, and are worried it may not hold, but when the glass door explodes the electricity subsides, the shield fading away as water rushes through the open doorway, washing you and Slowbro through with it.

The next minute you find yourself sitting in a long corridor with sunlight streaming through at the end, soaking wet with Slowbro laying on the floor beside you with a wide grin on his face. Hermes comes whooshing through the shattered doorway and straight into your arms, relieved to see you're ok, but you don't even have the chance to celebrate the fact you've gotten out of this one alive when a purple lightning bolt zaps down from the ceiling and strikes Slowbro in the chest. He falls back, eyes wide open with shock, and horrified, you realise he's dead. The old hag's manic laugh fills the corridor, and although you can't see her you quickly realise she must have been watching your every move. "That's for cheating!" she laughs hysterically, her insane cackle fading away several seconds later to leave you sitting in the corridor staring at Slowbro's lifeless body...

Shadowshocker: Emma's eyes light up at the prospect of revealing all she knows, but before she can utter a word Owen interjects. "The story hints at the prospect the Chosen Ones aren't actually siblings," he replies hesitantly, seemingly unwilling to say any more than that. "But it's only a story, pure and simple." He stares hard at Emma to emphasise his last words before continuing. "'Andromeda's Tale' was Emma's favourite fairytale growing up, so she tends to get a little carried away with the prophecy that some translate to mean the story has yet to be told." When Emma tries to interrupt, Owen silences her with a wave of his hand, obviously unwilling to let her fill your heads with any more nonsense. "It's ridiculous of course, because there's no way an untold story can possibly already be written."

Glancing at Emma, you notice that she's done trying to argue with Owen, instead standing silently with her lips pressed together in a thin line. The expression on her face is one of pure rage, and even though her eyes seem to be shooting daggers at Owen, there is a distinctly thoughtful look in them. You can't help but feel she's not finished yet, but whatever the case Owen seems to believe he's finally managed to shush her and so continues to address both you and Loretta.

"Like I said," he continues, glancing quickly at Loretta before turning his full attention to you. "I've been visiting Laramie Ranch since I was twelve, so I'm aware of the recent thefts. My research indicates that those responsible are located in the desert, but here's where it gets tricky..."

He stops speaking, glancing at Emma with an uncomfortable expression on his face. She stares back at him with a decidedly, "I'd like to see you explain this one," look, before she turns and wanders over to one of the bookshelves, seemingly randomly scanning the titles.

"I'm not sure how much you've read about the history of Elyra," Owen begins, cracking his neck and tugging on his shirt collar in a manner that demonstrates he's highly uneasy with the details he's about to reveal, "but if you're to believe in the legend of the Avatars then I think I know where the stolen Rapidash are being taken."

"You can't be serious," Loretta says quietly, her tone clearly conveying not only her disbelief, but her rage. You've heard a few rumours yourself and think you know where Owen is headed, finding yourself perfectly able to understand Loretta's reluctance to take the man seriously. "We come here for answers and you give us Aryle?" she asks, her voice dangerously low. "If that's all you have for us we'll leave now, map or no map, because what you're saying is ridiculous."

"But it's not ridiculous, I've been there!" Owen responds desperately, scrambling over to his desk. He yanks open a drawer, scrambling around in it for a few seconds, before carefully removing a small box. He holds it out in front of you, gingerly lifting the lid to reveal a beautiful emerald resting inside the purple velvet lined box. "I made my way through the forest four years ago because I wanted to know if there was any truth to the legend. I passed all of the necessary trials and eventually retrieved the Forest Emerald that I used to access the portal hidden in the forest."

He looks between both of you now, an expression of such earnestness in his eyes that you actually begin to wonder if he may be telling the truth.

"The power contained in this crystal is minimal now, because it's already been used once to travel back and forth between Elyra and Aryle, but there's just enough residual energy left in it to prove what I'm saying is true. If you don't believe me now, you will when you touch it, but I need for you to trust in what I'm telling you or you'll surely fail in your quest."

Glancing at Loretta, you can see she's still very angry, but there's also an expression of curiosity in her eyes. It seems she may just be willing enough to hear Owen out, but are you?"

Forest of Mystery - Please reply in limegreen

S_M: Your concern for Buneary has obviously earned you some brownie points with the boy, for he doesn't appear to be as afraid of you as he was several minutes ago. The fact he'd undoubtedly saved your life probably also has a little something to do with the fact he appears to trust you won't do anything to harm him, but he's still quite edgy which isn't all that surprising considering he's been hiding out in the forest with an army of giant mutant Ariados hunting him down for goodness knows how long. He leans over Buneary while you spray it with the Super Potion, concernedly stroking its soft fur while it begins to stir. The little Rabbit Pokémon's eyes flutter open, but you can tell its been poisoned. Remembering what John had told you earlier, you're relieved to know that the poison won't kill Buneary, and are silently thankful for the fact you'd taken a swig of the antidote the man had given you before you found yourself coming under attack. Buneary is still going to need medical attention though, so the sooner you can find it a poison healing berry, the better. Buneary closes its eyes again, its breathing laboured, and you can't help but feel it's a lucky thing you're in the forest despite what's residing here because what better place will there be to find a berry. The boy's hand resting on your shoulder draws your attention, so you look over at him, once again amazed by how someone so young has survived this long given the circumstances. "Elan," he says, pointing to himself, before nodding off in a direction leading deeper into the forest. "Come."

The boy lifts Buneary from the ground, tenderly holding it as he begins to walk into the forest, so you follow wondering where he's taking you. He stops several times, standing stock still while listening intently to the sounds of the forest around him, sometimes diverting from the current path he's on, at other times continuing along the same route. His complete affinity with nature and familiarity with his surroundings leads you to believe he's grown up in the forest which is highly likely judging from the fact you'd found him lurking upon the outskirts of the secluded village, but you have a bad feeling in the pit of your stomach telling you that something is desperately wrong considering it had been abandoned quite hurriedly some time ago and is now a nesting ground for the mutant Ariados. After about half an hour the boy stops beside a line of trees whose vines are dangling to the ground, and pushes them aside to reveal a man made tunnel that leads underground on quite a steep angle. Elan steps through, holding the vines aside whilst waiting for you to follow, before making his way down the steep incline. Darkness slowly closes in on you as the sunlight from behind begins to fade while you make your way further underground, an unsettling feeling of claustrophobia is starting to creep in, but a few minutes later you notice the faint flicker of firelight ahead. Elan keeps walking at a steady pace before eventually stopping at the entrance to a large, underground chamber. He looks up at you, tears welling in his eyes, before looking into the chamber helplessly.

The sight that greets you is like something out of a horror movie, as you notice large Ariados eggs covering almost every inch of the inner chamber, but the most frightening part is that you've found the missing villagers. One single torch is standing in the middle of the chamber, its flame illuminating the area just enough for you to see dozens of humans bound up in sticky webbing that is attached to the walls. Some of them are quite obviously dead, but others are barely alive. Even as you stand there watching, one of the eggs begins to hatch, Elan grabbing you and guiding you into a thin crevice in the wall. He shuts his eyes tightly, unable to watch what is about to unfold, but you're mesmerised. A baby Spinarak three times the size of a regular Ariados slowly breaks free of its shell, blinking rapidly as it takes in its surroundings. Upon spying the humans glued to the wall it begins to salivate before making its way over to one of them. You can sense what is about to happen, and look away, placing your hands over Elan's ears as inhuman screams fill the chamber. The boy is shaking so hard you feel he's about to convulse, and hope to God he hasn't witnessed the demise of his own parents. When the screaming subsides, you look back into the chamber to see the baby Spinarak scuttling along the passage you'd just used to enter the chamber as it makes its way out into the forest. Elan then steps out of the crevice, still visibly shaken, and hurries over to one of the humans still stuck to the wall. You can see he's attempted to free some of the people but hasn't had a great deal of success, and realise this is why he's brought you here. He needs your help...

It seems she may just be willing enough to hear Owen out, but are you?
The legend of the Avatars. While Shadow hadn't researched deeply into the history of Elyra, he knew just enough to know that Aryle was a dangerous place. Above the fantasy elements there was the growing risk that he, Loretta and their team might easily forfeit their lives journeying in such a region.

But then, Shadow thought, Owen's proposal wasn't without merits. Escaping to another parallel dimension could be the reason why no one had successfully apprehended the team in black all this time, with no means to travel to Aryle and arrest them. The emotionless, evil-eyed Fearow he had seen then seemed to justify that a nastier world must exist for such a soulless creature to originate from. Part of his mind was still dwelling on Emma's tale; its truth appeared to be further reinforced with Owen's suggestion of the heroes' lack of blood ties, but the young man had a hunch that so long as Emma and Owen were in the same room he wouldn't be able to get anything out of the bespectacled girl, what with the two librarians contradicting each other.

"Still, if Owen was attempting to affirm truth in Andromeda's Tale, it's clear that the story involves Aryle somehow," reasoned Shadow. "I don't like where things are going any more than Loretta, but it's still the only lead we have. Perhaps I can get Emma to tell us the story once we can get her alone; there's too much similarity we've heard to simply dismiss the legend."

"I believe your story, Mister Owen," he says, "But before we let you prove the existence of Aryle to us, I just have one question. What makes you so sure that the kidnapped Pokémon are been taken to Aryle?"

She jumps from one ledge to another, almost falling from one particularly fragile outcrop, before scuttling her way up again. Golem is none too pleased to see her climbing further and further out of its reach and begins using Mega Punch, smashing its fist into the mountainside over and over again. Having nowhere left to go, a very long drop beneath her, and an unstable cliffside as the only ground she has to hold, Arcanine is left with no other choice than to jump before one of the rocks falling down around her actually knock her off. She leaps for it, Golem racing out to meet her on her downward plunge, its fist glowing white with energy, prepared to slam her for a six. Arcanine has other ideas though, tensing herself and concentrating on putting all of her Strength into a brutal physical attack. Just before she reaches Golem, the rock type notices a metallic sheen coating Arcanine's tail, and in that instant knows it's in very big trouble. Arcanine spins in the air, her Iron clad Tail whipping around to come smashing into the side of Golem's head. Golem drops like a brick, knocked out, while Arcanine comes to a graceful landing on the ground and stands over the rock type, a low growl rumbling in her throat as though she's expecting it to get up and retaliate. It's a good thing your plan has worked though, because Arcanine is spent and it looks like she might not have the energy needed to help you reach the Empyrean Mountain Crater as quickly as you had hoped. Noticing something on the ground next to Golem, you scoop it up to find it's a Lava Cookie. Seems Golem must have dropped it when it was knocked out...
When Golem starts slamming the mountain and rocks start falling around Arcanine, Inferno thinks he's made a big mistake telling her to go up there, but Arcanine is smart and performs her next attacks perfectly. Inferno grins when he sees the look of shock on Golem's face and jumps up, punching the air when Arcanine's Iron Tail knocks it out. Golem drops something so Inferno picks it up. It's a Lava Cookie. Inferno hasn't seen one before but he's heard about them. They're supposed to be able to cure any status effect, so he puts it in his pocket because it might come in useful.

"You did great Arcanine, but you're tired so you have to rest." Inferno says, patting her. He gets a Potion (#2/9) out of his bag and sprays her with it. "I'm going to give you a nice reward for helping me when you're feeling better. I have some TMs for you, but you have to get heaps of rest before you can learn them so we can practice them right away, ok?" He pats her again and returns her to her Fire Ball so she can rest then looks up the mountain path. It's going to be a long trip without Arcanine to help him, but he has to get to the crater as quickly as he can. He's heard Flying Pokemon can be in danger if they try to fly into the crater but if he uses Charizard they can stop before they reach the summit and Inferno can walk the rest of the way. He puts Arcanine's ball away and takes Charizard's out, releasing him. The black dragon roars, happy to be smelling fresh air, and stretches his wings.

"We're going to Empyrean Mountain Crater Charizard, but we can't get too close by air because of the rocks erupting from the volcano from time to time. If we're caught in them we'll be in heaps of trouble so we'll have to try and get as close as we can" Inferno explains. Charizard looks up at the mountain summit and snorts. He doesn't care about rocks, but Inferno does. "I know you're not scared Charizard but we have to be careful. Can you get us close?" Charizard nods, and Inferno climbs on his back, ready to continue his journey so he can see Professor Happo's Bazooka Pokemon for himself. It sounds like its really cool and Inferno wants to catch it if he can.

lilbluecorsola: Bobble's jealousy is the least of your worries at the moment, as the steady stream of water entering the room will surely seal your fate if you don't act immediately.

Slowbro smiled obliquely and responded with courteous welcome to her request. She enfolded her arms around his shell, breathing deeply as the water began to chillingly stroke her neck. She felt her height gradually ascend, lifted by the water’s increasing strength. The words of the riddle circled ceaselessly around in her mind, until they expanded persistently into the air through her faint whispers.

When the tide has engulfed all but one
A bolt of light must strike the sun,
Only then a path will lead the way
Out into the light of day.

Suddenly, Jessica felt her companion’s body grow as stiff as the exterior she held after a series of quiet repetitions. His eyes broadened in fear, and they glanced anxiously towards Hermes, who strove to hover tranquilly in the declining space. "This isn't going to work..." the Slowbro announced in a dreadful timbre. "When the tide has engulfed all but one," he echoed significantly. "I am a Water Type, so cannot succumb to the tide. I should never have come with you, my lady! My presence here has put you in peril's path!"

Jessica’s heart sank into the water as she understood his meaning, and panic gripped her chest as she frantically turned her gaze from Slowbro to Hermes, and hesitating between the two of them. This would imply that both she and her Pokémon had to submerge in order to leave Slowbro to surpass the surface and cast THUNDERBOLT towards the sun. Unfortunately, the being in question did not possess any knowledge of such attacks.

“What can we do?” Her mind raced, pressured by the rising tide. Nothing positive occurred to her, and her hands clung more severely to Slowbro’s casing, panic reinforcing their hold. Hermes hovered anxiously aside – his head reluctantly greeted the ceiling while his legs barely entered the surface of the water. Silence overpowered as the three traded their terrified expressions.

“I’ve got it!” Slowbro whirled around with his sudden proclamation, securing her position whilst gazing imperatively towards Hermes. "When we disappear beneath the water, wait five seconds and fire off your attack!"

Hermes objected forcefully, unwilling to pose a risk to his trainer while she remained submerged. The rules say, 'When the tide engulfs all but one,'" Slowbro insisted immediately. "They don't say how you're engulfed, just that one of us needs to be above the water." He fixed Hermes with a meaningful stare. "That one must be you. I'll hold the little lady under, form a protective circle around her to protect her lungs from water and her body from electricity, then you can fire your attack."

Jess recognized that this arrangement could promote their only prospect of escape. She assented to Hermes, who submitted tentatively in return. Slowbro’s arms wrapped securely around her, and he questioned softly, “Are you ready?” She nodded, reserving her breath as her height began to gradually descend under the surface, persuaded by her companion’s influence. Her eyes sealed shut as water shrouded her vision; she could never bear the sensation of water covering her entire face, as a child even up until today. Panic was already gradually seeping into her lungs. Oh God, what if I drown? Help! Please get me out of here!

A warmth surpassed her, enclosing her in a vision. She opened her eyes, and observed in awe as the barrier spread itself to safeguard the two. The water’s impression vanished from her senses, and she swallowed hesitantly, finding breath readily available to her. She smiled gratefully at Slowbro, and glanced upwards towards the surface, scanning for Hermesiel’s luminous body. A flash of radiance marked his presence as it traveled straight towards the exit, flooding the room with electricity. The streams conducted along the shield’s surface, and she prayed worriedly that the plane could withstand the strain.

The door itself stood its ground, and despite the accessibility of air she held her breath, exhaling in triumph when she witnessed the glass ultimately shatter. The crackle of energy surrounding the room collapsed, as did the barrier. The flood exhausted through the open doorway, conveying a fatigued Jess and Slowbro into a long, empty corridor. As the water swept away, the two gradually noticed each other and their location and grinned. Hermes dropped through the exit and directly into her embrace, reassured of her wellbeing.

Before they could rejoice in their success, lightning abruptly screamed down from overhead to collide with Slowbro’s chest. His eyes extended in shock, and his body subsided quietly to the floor. Jessica sensed herself rush to his side, checking his life. …There was no response.

The woman’s crazed cackle resounded through the hallway, and Jess’s heart clenched as she realized that she must have been observing the girl’s actions from afar. "That's for cheating!" the witch declared emphatically, her insane laughter withering away as Jessica stared hopelessly at Slowbro’s motionless form, lost in repentance.

“This… Can’t be happening. I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have asked you to come with me. It’s all my fault…”

Her hands trembled with emotion, and tears dripped steadily from her eyes. Hermesiel caught them and brushed her face comfortingly, and she embraced his warmth in desperation.

You did your best. That’s enough. He’s gone to a better place now.

Hermesiel’s love spoke to her through his gesture, and she shuddered, breaking into sobs. He held her close while she cried, and eventually her emotions settled to the point where she could withdraw from the need of his support. She knelt beside Slowbro and softly touched his arm, still warm from recent life.

“I am sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you…”

Her throat failed. She didn’t know what else to say, and she couldn’t pronounce it if she did. And so she stood, turning her gaze towards the expanse of the corridor. Light filtered through at its conclusion, beckoning her towards the retreat from shadowed enclosures. She did not look back again, but addressed Hermesiel in a quiet, fearsome tone of voice.

“Hermes, say a prayer for Slowbro. And you should say one for that witch as well. Because if I see her again, I will definitely make her pay...

When you’re done, we’re getting out of here. Be on your guard. If she’s waiting for us outside, use LIGHT SCREEN immediately as a precaution, understand?”

lilbluecorsola: Justifiably distraught and angry over Slowbro's premature demise, you exit the corridor with payback in mind. Sunlight washes over you as you enter an overgrown garden courtyard, the sun's welcoming rays warming you against the chills that are setting in due to your wet clothing. You look around only to find yourself in a maze and sigh, wondering when this is going to end. The hedges are at least six metres high so there is no chance of seeing over top of them, and if you take a wrong turn could find yourself lost deeper within the depths of the witch's prison rather than finding yourself closer to freedom. There are paths leading from each of the four corners of the little courtyard you're in so you can only hope one of them will lead you out of here but the question is, which one? While you're contemplating the matter you hear a howl slice the air. Your skin crawls, for you sense there is something seriously wrong, and as you stand there the howling continues. You're not sure if you should run towards it, or away from it, but it seems Hermes has picked up on something you haven't as is heading for one of the paths leading into the maze. He stops and waits for you, his eyes full of concern, and figuring your path has been chosen for you, follow him. He zips along the path, making a couple of sharp turns, and within moments you find yourself standing beside a Vulpix whose front paw is caught in a nasty looking metal jawed trap. It's in excruciating pain as it tries to free itself, only injuring its foot further, and you know you're going to have to do something in order to stop it from permanently maiming itself. Part of you wants to get angry, for this witch is not only insane, she's downright sadistic. Killing Slowbro was horrifying enough, but to see a harmless little Fox Pokémon trapped in such a lethal object... Hermes tries to calm Vulpix, telling it you're there to help, but just as it begins to stop struggling its eyes widen with fear when they fall upon something behind you. You turn, spying a Pinsir walking along the path toward you. Its eyes are blank and soulless, as though it's in a trance, and there is no doubt in your mind that it's after Vulpix and will attack anything in its way. Vulpix starts to struggle again, desperately trying to escape, but yelps as the lethal metal jaws sink further into its paw. Hermes immediately places himself between you and Vulpix, and Pinsir, prepared to fight if need be...

Shadowshocker: "I've seen one of these men before," Owen replies quietly, staring at the emerald. He seems to be in another world while reminiscing on a past event, the sadness and loss in his expression making you wonder exactly what it is he'd supposedly experienced in Aryle. "Aryle is a dark and dangerous land ruled over by armies controlled by Lord Razon. Each army is delegated to one of the land's regions, dispersed amongst the general population to keep them.. under control." These last words are practically spat out, Owen's face contorting into a mask of angry disapproval. "While I've had no personal contact with him before, I'll never forget his face..." Owen continues before falling silent, unable to speak.

Suddenly Emma doesn't seem as angry, for her own eyes have filled with tears that she's struggling to contain. Whatever happened to Owen whilst in Aryle must have been painful, and although he doesn't appear willing to share this information with you it's clear that Emma is fully aware of the events. "As hard as it is to believe, Aryle is as real as you and I," she says, wiping the tears from her eyes. "I was the one who healed Owens wounds when he returned. I nursed him through his long and painful recovery, sat by his side while he screamed and wept in his sleep. I saw enough through his suffering to believe in the twin worlds, and to know that travelling to Aryle isn't a decision one should take lightly."

"We shouldn't be wasting time talking," Owen interrupts, apparently uncomfortable with Emma's revelations and wanting to change the subject. He flicks the lid of the box containing the Forest Emerald closed, placing it back into his drawer before removing a folded paper. "This is a map of the Incura Valley region," he says, unfolding it and placing it on the desk. "And this is a map of Death Valley," he continues, retrieving a clear plastic sheet with several unrecognisable markings on it from between two books on one of the shelves. When he places the sheet over top of the Incura Valley map, you're amazed as the original map transforms, adding several extra details that aren't on Incura Valley's layout.

"Incura Valley and Death Valley are almost identical, but there are differences," Owen states, frowning at the map. "From the intelligence I was able to acquire, I've marked out three hidden army bases in Death Valley but I doubt you'll need to visit these locations to find your Rapidash." He glances at Loretta for a split second, and for just a moment you're sure you see pity in his eyes, but a moment later he's talking again. "I can't tell you why they're stealing your Rapidash, or what they're doing with them, but I can tell you that Lord Razon only wishes to acquire the best of the best for his personal use. Elite Pokémon. These men are not fools, and if they did their homework upon arriving in Elyra will have discovered that Laramie Ranch has a reputation for breeding the world's best Rapidash, and that's a drawcard they'll not pass up." Loretta purses her lips and you can tell she's just dying to interrupt, but for once she keeps her mouth shut and allows Owen to finish.

"Laramie Ranch is very different in Aryle," Owen says, his demeanour telling you it's not a place Loretta will enjoy. "I don't believe they've been taken there but it can't be ruled out although I can think of three reasons for your Rapidash being taken, and where they've ended up. While it's possible they've been taken to Cawley Ranch, Aryle's version of Laramie Ranch, my guess is they've been stolen for Lord Razon's personal guard, for breeding, or..." Owen hesitates for a few seconds, "...taken to the Desolate Fortress." He looks up at Loretta, his expression guarded. "Whatever the reason for them being stolen, none are good and it will be extremely dangerous trying to steal them back. I'm afraid that even if you do find them it will be too late to rescue them because-"

"... Because their hearts will be tainted." Emma finishes, her face very pale while she avoids making eye contact with Owen. "The story says-" but before she has a chance to continue Owen interrupts, obviously not wanting Emma rattling on about the legend again.

"The story is irrelevant Emma, and even if there were any truth to it you cannot tell them or history will be changed."

"That's the whole point, isn't it?!" she retorts angrily, every fibre of her being seeming to be bristing with rage. "Changing history. Warning of the dangers, telling them where not to go and who not to trust? We can stop it, Owen! Don't you see that?!"

Owen dismisses her with a wave of his hand and Emma, frustrated to no end with Owen's righteous babble, turns on her heel with a huff and continues scanning book title on the shelf.

"I'm sorry," Owen apologises, glancing at you both. "But fairy tales are just that, and if you're to have any chance of finding your Rapidash alive then there's no time for the telling of this nonsense." Emma snorts at this, to which Owen responds by glaring at her back. "The first thing you need to do is access the portal between the two worlds which I know is here," Owen continues, pointing at a spot on the map marked with the words, 'Guardians of Time'. "It's not as easy as it sounds, though, because you'll need to have a special stone, the Soul Topaz, in your possession, and obtaining it is quite a task in itself. When you have it, take it to the Guardians of Time to activate the portal. Once activated, your crossover will be instantaneous, but you need to remember that as long as the portal remains active then Lord Razon and his armies will have a door with which to travel to this world. It won't close until you return with the Soul Topaz, so if you lose it you'll be stuck there forever."

At this point Owen turns around to remove something from his desk drawer, and glancing at Loretta you see her staring back at you with her eyebrow raised. "This is the biggest load of rubbish I've heard in my life," she whispers in your ear, leaning over so that Owen can't hear her, but before you can respond Owen has a satchel on his back and has taken out several strangely designed Pokéballs.

"If your Rapidash have been turned their original Pokéballs will be useless," he says, handing one each of the balls to you and Loretta. "These Twilight Balls are the only Pokéball you can use that will be able to capture them again. Once you've captured them, don't release them again for they will not listen to any orders given. Keep the balls safe, and we can work on re-training your Rapidash when you return to Elyra." He then hands you the entire satchel, and glancing inside you see there must be about a dozen Twilight Balls inside. "Avoid Lord Razon's Guards at all costs, don't be too quick to trust anyone you meet, and above all don't travel with your Pokémon. Travelling on foot is far safer as you won't be drawing attention to yourselves."

With this Owen ushers you both to the door, handing you the map in the process. "There is still so much to do before you can leave Elyra, so we can't waste any more time. If my intelligence is correct they're using Elyra Field's portal to travel between dimensions which will be heavily guarded on both sides. You'll have no chance of getting through undetected so you'll need to use the Guardians of Time in the desert. It's the most remote and uninhabited region of Aryle so you'll have time to blend in before being spotted by locals who may alert Lord Razon's guards to the presence of strangers in the land."

Before he can shut the door behind you Emma does something completely out of character and rushes forward to hug Loretta who appears rather taken aback. Emma then hugs you, and as she does you feel something drop into your backpack. She gives you a knowing glance and says, "Be careful," before stepping back and allowing you to leave. A moment later you're standing outside the door, Loretta already stomping off down the hallway. "I do believe my Rapidash are in the desert, but Aryle?" she rants. "I don't think so!" As she storms of down the hallway and begins to descend the stairs you hear Emma's raised voice from behind the closed door.

"You're such a hypocrite, Owen! Why did you lie to them?!" she yells. "You've already changed history by leading them to the desert! You've already stopped-"

"Shut up, Emma!" Owen retorts, frustrated. "I don't want to see them suffer losses any more than you, and you know what will happen if they access the Sky Chasm's portal. At least now they have a fighting chance of saving her."

Their discussion continues, but far less heated so you're unable to make out what they're saying. One thing you do know, however, is that if you try to access the same portal the dark men are using then someone, whether human or Pokémon, will die. If you can manage to convince Loretta there may be some truth in what Owen has said, then you're going to have to ensure you access the more remote portal in the desert...

Empyrean Mountain - Please reply in red

Inferno: With Arcanine taking a well deserved rest, you contemplate your next choice of action. Although flying close to the summit will be dangerous, it'll be the next quickest way to get there, and with Professor Happo waiting for you to retrieve his tool kit you don't want to be keeping him waiting all day. The allure of the Bazooka Pokémon he'd mentioned is an additional incentive to make this trip as quickly as possible, so you release Charizard and ask him to take you as far as he can. Charizard doesn't seem at all pleased with having to take precautions, snorting indignantly at the prospect, but reluctantly agreeing to take the safe path. Once you've climbed onto his back he takes off, staying close to the ground while flying above Rollers Road. Several minutes later the trail ends and he emerges into a beautiful field covered with lush foliage while two trainers are standing beside a bridge on the far side of the field looking rather confused. Charizard pays no attention to them, only concerned with proceeding up the mountainside, and wastes no time in crossing the large expanse of open plain. That is until he crashes headlong into an invisible barrier directly in front of the bridge. He grunts, surprised, falling to the ground while you topple off to land on the grass beside him. Tinkling laughter fills the air, but it's not the trainers who find the situation amusing, in fact they appear quite concerned and immediately rush over to help you up, it's the hysterical giggles of a little Mime Jr. that is infuriating Charizard. He gets up, snorting flames, enraged this little cretin has the audacity to humiliate him, and blasts out a Flamethrower intent on teaching the little Mime Pokémon a lesson. Mime Jr. only laughs more, however, when an invisible barrier in front of it absorbs the flames. Charizard roars angrily, smoke streaming from his nostrils, and you know you're going to have to do something to calm him before he really loses it. Mime Jr. is laughing so hard it has tears streaming from its eyes, but finally managed to control itself enough to squeak in a little voice.

"Threats are not the way to pass
Fight me and you'll never last,
To enter the city that lays beyond
You and your Pokémon must form a bond,
Shows of strength matter not to me
But knowledge fills me with glee,
The two of you must pass a test
So you can continue upon your quest,
Answer my question to enter the city
Get it wrong and your fate you'll pity."

Charizard looks at you with a cocky expression. All you need to do is answer a question and he'll be free to flatten this little pink blob to a pulp. Not too hard...

"You first!" squeaks Mime Jr., pointing at one of the male trainers who had helped you to your feet. He's quite young and appears to be the most inexperienced of the three trainers, but you're hoping this won't matter any when Mime Jr. suddenly begins to rattle off its question. "When I'm free I live underground but if I'm owned by a trainer when I evolve, how does he get two of me instead of one?"

The female trainer standing beside you immediately raises her hand. "I know! I know!" she cries excitedly, wanting to answer Mime Jr's question.

"It's not your turn," Mime Jr. replies, resulting in her disappointment as she lowers her hand.

"Umm..." murmurs the boy, thinking hard. You feel like yelling out the answer because it's so obvious, but the boy apparently isn't all that familiar with all of the different types of Pokémon in the world and is having trouble figuring it out. "If you use Double Team when you're evolving you'll split into two?" he says hesitantly, his answer more of a question than a statement.

"Hehehe! Let's see if you're right!" Mime Jr. giggles, standing to the side of the bridge. "Come on over."

The boy looks between the two of you and takes a few hesitant steps forward, and when he's crossing the bridge a plank gives way beneath his feet and he falls into the water below with a splash. Suddenly he starts screaming blue murder and it's immediately evident it's not a, "I can't swim" cry, but an absolutely terrified one. You rush the bank of the stream and are horrified to see two Carvanha closing in on the child. Charizard roars with fury, swooping down and lifting the boy out of the water before he can be attacked, bringing him back to land and placing him gently on the ground where he proceeds to sob uncontrollably.

"Wrong!" Mime Jr. giggles, clapping excitedly. "Now it's YOUR turn!" it says, pointing at the girl who gulps with fear. "If I'm happy under the stars the light of the moon will make me dark, but if I'm out in the light of day I'll become psychic in the sun's rays."

"Eevee," she replies without hesitation, and although you're absolutely certain she's right you can't help but worry about what will happen next.

"Come on over!" Mime Jr. squeals, jumping up and down excitedly. A minute later the girl is on the other side of the bridge and Mime Jr. is looking at you.

"Let's see if you pass," it says, its tone making you want to wring its scrawny little neck. "The symbols of Unniloctium, Beryllium, and Carbon combine to make me. Line them up, mix them around, and you'll see that I'm from the ground. What am I?"

The soaking wet boy on the grass looks up at you, his eyes wide and filled with fear. "Don't do it," he says, worried you may end up in the stream, especially now that several more Carvanha have gathered under the bridge, eager for a feed...

The new information buzzed about Shadow's brain like a Combee hive against an Ursaring horde, causing him to bring a hand to his pounding forehead. Owen had mentioned a most sizeable amount of data, some of which Shadow had never heard of or knew of how to investigate such information. How were they to go to Aryle through Incura Valley if Owen had not informed them how to get the key item involved? Hearing the argument happen behind him, even in snippets, drew another sigh from the young man, torn between exasperation and confusion.

Rubbing his temples he attempted to sort out his thoughts. There were several locations where the Rapidash were hypothesised to have been taken, mirrored locations of Elyra Field, Atrea City and Incura Valley. Navigation would not be the most difficult of tasks; staying alive held the position of highest authority. Other concerns of intel gathering and supply maintenance wracked his mind in chaos, but at the moment he had a pressing matter to address. Loretta, understandably, had discounted Owen's claims, but Shadow felt there was little to disprove the truth behind what the veteran scholar had told them. Few of the footnotes that had mentioned Shadow Pokémon claimed of a possible region that lived, breathed and existed as darkness... could Aryle be the answer? Perhaps it was too convenient a coincidence, but it was inarguably the only lead they held, and the ranchgirl was about to throw it away.

"Loretta, wait up!" called Shadow, desperate to halt the angry girl but also cautious about attracting attention, rushing up to her even as she descended the stairway. "I know it all sounds incredulous. I know how dangerous the implications might be. But this is the only clue we managed to unearth; we can't simply discount what Emma and Owen has said, and they wouldn't have reason to lie to us. Not after what they've shown." Pausing for breath to arrange his thoughts, the young man continued.

"Look, Loretta. It's not possible to deny how things are matching up here. The least we could do is go by the Incura Valley like we planned in our investigations; if we turn up with no conclusive finds of the Rapidash there we'll still be on the potential trail to track them in Aryle," he rationalised. "At the very least we should check whatever Emma dropped into my backpack; it might hold another lead..."

Fumbling in his carrier, Shadow began to search for the mystery item Emma had covertly passed him...

Elyra, The Light World

Atrea, City of Fortune - Please reply in hotpink

Shadowshocker: Finally catching up with Loretta at the bottom of the stairs you realise from the fierce expression of rage in her eyes that you're not going to be able to convince her that Owen and Emma's story has even an ounce of credibility to it, so you're quick to acknowledge that hence she end up turning on you as well, and at the very least try to convince her to follow your original plan to search for her Rapidash in the desert. After all, if the legend is true there must be some clues laying about that may eventually sway her around to your way of thinking. She doesn't look at all convinced that you haven't bought into their story, but nods in agreement in regards to following your initial plans. As you rummage around in your backpack for the item Emma dropped into it, Loretta becomes impatient again, a frown creasing her brow when you pull out a book. Reading the title, 'Andromeda's Tale', you can't help but be taken aback. It's the same title that Emma had said told your story, and upon glancing at Loretta find that she's paled slightly, a look of complete bewilderment plastered upon her face.

"You're not actually falling for this, are you?" she asks, her gaze scanning the storybook's cover which details a Rapidash as well as two humans bearing a striking resemblance to you both. "It's a trick!" she exclaims, drawing the attention of several people nearby who frown their disapproval of her raised voice. "Can't you see Emma is manipulating you?" she whispers so as not to annoy anyone else in the library. "She wants you to believe that ridiculous story so that we'll go off in search of some gem, what did Owen call it, the Soul Topaz, because she probably wants it for herself and thinks we're stupid enough to hunt it down for her!" Although you can see there may be just a smidgeon of logic to this, you can also see that Loretta doesn't actually believe this herself, and use this opening to your advantage, leading her over to one of the vacant tables so that you're able to read the opening chapter if nothing more. If there's still nothing useful in it, then you can continue on into the desert without giving the book a second thought. Loretta reluctantly agrees, seating herself beside you as you open the book and begin reading the first chapter.

Chapter 1: The Waywatcher

Arriving amidst the hustle and bustle of the thriving Elyra Port, the gangly teen known only as 'Shadow' winds his way through the bustling crowd with his Duskull in tow, with only a single destination in mind. Several minutes later he emerges into a large expanse of open plains to see Laramie Ranch which is the place he's eagerly looking forward to visiting. He smiles, paying little attention to the mountains in the distance, or the people enjoying a relaxing day in the field, for he's almost there. As he walks around a small hill he sees several young children sitting on the edge of a meter-tall stone wall, noticing how they're talking animatedly to one another, but falling silent as he approaches. One of them, seemingly the oldest, and certainly the tallest of the boys, jumps down from his vantage point and stands in the middle of the way, hands on his hips, and a smile on his face.

"Halt!" he demands, eyeing Shadow from head to toe. "As the waywatcher, it is my duty to find out if you are worthy of attending the ranch. Therefore, I challenge you to a one-on-one duel!" he declares, sounding very cocky in front of his friends. Shadow wonders if there is any possibility of a sillier name to this boys occupation and glances quizzically at his Duskull as the boy motions toward a single Pokéball on his belt. "Well? What be it? I demand an answer!"

Some of the children still sitting on the wall are now pointing and whispering, the object of attention being Shadow's Duskull, Grim. From the looks of it, this boy probably couldn't stop Shadow if he really wants to pass by, but with the thought of a battle being a reward in itself, with some gained experience to boot, Shadow contemplates-

Before you can get any further Loretta pushes her chair back and stands up. "We're wasting time reading this nonsense," she hisses "So this character has your name, so what? It means nothing!" Turning on her heel Loretta stalks out of the library. "I'm going to the desert so you can come with me or sit here reading your storybook. Your call!" A moment later she's gone, but you know that the name isn't a mere coincidence like Loretta seems to think. Something in her reaction doesn't seem to fit, however, as she seemed more spooked by what she was reading than angry. Could it be that she already believes there to be truth in the tale and is in a state of denial? Whatever the case it may be a good idea to keep the book tucked away safely for the time being, but you're finding yourself torn between reading further or catching up with her before she puts too much distance between the two of you...

A sensation gripped Shadow's gut, reminiscent of his heart sinking. A part of him had been hoping that Andromeda's Tale was nothing but mere legend, perhaps out of fear from living along a path dictated centuries ago. Was the future locked, dictated inside these finite pages? What would happen, now that Owen and Emma had changed the story, as he overheard through the shut observatory door? Placing the book back in his haversack, Shadow dismissed the story momentarily from his mind; the scarily accurate detail already mentioned having formed a mental model in his thought processes. The subsequent chapters were likely to hold the story of what he already knew, and Loretta was the more pressing of priorities.

Loretta... Something didn't feel right about the ranchgirl, since they were brought to see Owen. Loretta was unsettled to say the least, almost bordering on upset. Given the circumstances, it wouldn't be surprising -- most people wouldn't feel pleasant at the prospects of a greater force imperiously watching over them. Regardless, Shadow knew that he couldn't let himself be separated from Loretta; in any case, they were partners, comrades on this mission, and he couldn't leave her to brave the world and the enemy alone. Rising from his seat Shadow broke into a run for Loretta; actions, at this point, would speak louder than anything he could ever say for the moment...

lilbluecorsola: Justifiably distraught and angry over Slowbro's premature demise, you exit the corridor with payback in mind.
Stepping into sunlight, Jessica allowed the stifled breath to escape her throat. Her soaked clothing and skin welcomed the heat, contentedly washing away her shivers and shadows. Blinking double to rinse off the dazzling glares of brightness from her vision, her heart sank as she realized that what she had found was not freedom, but in fact a maze, patterned by overgrown hedges surpassing at least six meters. Four mobiles rested in the corners of the courtyard, each leading off into its own darkness. Jessica released a sigh, shaking her head in wonder at the witch’s ostensibly endless supply of trials and traps. How determined she must be to keep her prisoners confined! The inmate briefly pondered the scheme of letting Hermesiel FLY above the maze to direct her, but remembering the severe punishment that Slowbro received for “cheating”, she perished the thought quickly.

Suddenly, a ghastly howl screamed through the air, and she stiffened straight away in terror. The howls continued, undulating both above and below her normal range, lugubrious, like a plaintive wail, although she couldn’t be sure whether it belonged to a ghost or to a creature, whether she should approach the sound or run away. She glanced between the paths, dithering and uncertain. What if this too was a trap?

Hermes, without hesitation, flew to the entrance of one of the mobiles, stopping only to stare at her with fixed eyes full of concern. Jessica balked in panic from his insistent gaze, then she chided herself ashamedly for her indecision. She followed him into the labyrinth, cutting through sharp twists and turns, sprinting to keep pace with his steadfast wingbeats. As the blurred jungle of vines and leaves streaked by her vision, she was reminded suddenly of a setting similar to this, where she’d encountered monsters before. Was her life destined to repeat like this? No, this time would be different, she had changed, I’m sure of it.

Moments lapsed, and as Jessica turned a corner, she unexpectedly stumbled onto a break in the path. Ahead of her, Hermes abruptly halted and reversed, steadying the girl to prevent her foot from descending straight into the gleaming trap of a metal beast, which lay in deviously-positioned wait for an unsuspecting prey. Its steel jaws were already clamped over its previous victim: a tiny Vulpix, crying and struggling against its merciless captor. As the fox desperately tried to free its paw, Jessica saw that resistance only forced the wicked fangs to clench tighter, tearing at their prisoner’s delicious skin and bone. Rage built up within the girl, festering on the crone’s previous injustices. This woman must be insane, not to mention thoroughly sadistic. Her hand clenched severely, wanting to punch the loathsome hag right now in the face.

Now was not to the time for rage, she remembered. She needed to act quickly in order to help the poor creature escape. Hermes dropped down to the Vulpix’s height, soothing it and promising that the two were there to help. The Vulpix trembled and nodded, slowly beginning to cease its floundering…

Suddenly its eyes widened, gazing fearfully past her. An ominous pit forming in her stomach, Jessica turned around and realized with dismay the expected sight of a Pinsir lumbering unsteadily towards the group, its eyes vacant and uncomprehending, almost like a trance. Vulpix reasserted its attempts to escape, yelping as the insistent fangs only drove themselves deeper into its paw. They were determined to see through their sweet victim’s demise.

Hermes immediately rose between them and the looming menace, refusing to allow any harm to come to his charges. Jessica understood, and hastily threw two Pokéballs to the ground, releasing Bobble and Alice back onto the scene to help her rescue Vulpix, while Hermes graciously operated as a distraction. The two Psychics received their surroundings, the ensnared Vulpix on one side, and the alarming Pinsir opposite, with swift recognition. They both turned promptly to their trainer, expecting orders.

“Guys, use your combined PSYCHIC to try to disarm the trap. Bobble, also be prepared to SAFEGUARD Vulpix from any attacks. Hermes, pray to heaven with LUCKY CHANT, then try to blow Pinsir back with RAZOR WIND. Use FIRE PUNCH if it manages to get close. Please be careful, we’re counting on you.”
