Texas's Pig Problem
Hired Hog Trapper Has Three Years To Clean Out Dallas, NPR reports.
Interesting little news story. I did not know that Texas had such a problem. And I'm astonished that there are as many as 3 million of these feral pigs in Texas right now. With 26 million people living in the state, that's roughly one pig for every nine people. Granted, if one out of every four citizens was an old-school hunter and shot a pig dead with his gun, the entire population could be wiped out in a matter of days; but in modern times, with so few people actually hunting wild animals, this strikes me as a significant number of swine.

The feral pigs are huge too! I saw a video of a wild hog hunt where the pigs were as tall as sheep but as heavy as cows. They're like the pigs in Princess Mononoke!

They should just hire Morg. He'll burninate them all into nice, crisp bacon.

I approve that plan! 83 I'll help out by, uh, dispose of them semi-permanently after Morg's modifications. And make tons of bacon poutine, club sandwiches and whatnot to help out on that task too.

It's not only in Texas, but large portions of the Midwest really. I don't think hiring one trapper to clean out the state would work. They would really need all the states to also do the same or else the new hogs will just migrate to Texas.

1. Texas isn't in the MidWest.
2. I actually heard that (as of 2007) Texas already accounted for 50% of wild pigs in the United States. I can only imagine that that number has gone up in the past six years given that they're the state with the reported-on pig problem. And finally ... 3. While a quick Google search indicates that the wild pigs have made their way into Indiana as well, I don't recall having ever seen a single wild pig in my life here. And I've spent over 20 years of my life here, so ... ^^; Granted, I've lived in suburban or small urban areas, not out in the wilderness, but that doesn't mean much given that the Dallas pigs were apparently going into the city parks messing shit up, so I'd think Hoosier pigs would be no more city shy. (It's hard to compare a huge city like Dallas with the smaller cities and suburbs I've lived in in Indiana ...)

Obviously the only solution is to flood Texas with talking spiders to calm the pigs down. |
