Honestly this year looks like massive fun even if it will have a lot of legends.

I mean, it will be but it wouldn't be a fun year to start is my only point.

I can see Yveltal putting in so much work and that makes me happy.

I second this.
I disagree with them, and would say you should go for it at the very least casually. Make a throwaway team -- it doesn't have to be great -- and give the format a try for two games. See what you think.

My heart still belongs to 6v6 Singles, but my disillusionment with Smogon has definitely been a big factor in my foray into VGC which started some time late in the 2014 season.

Wait, what!? How is the Kalos Dex format bad? No, wait -- how is it bad in the same vein as the 2016 format? That's what you seem to be implying -- "2016 is the worst, although 2014 wasn't much better." As though they were both bad for the same reasons but 2016 is just worse in degree, or something. Not only would I say that the Kalos Dex format rocked, but I would also point out that it bore the least resemblance to the 2016 format out of the past three non-2016 formats we've had. 2015 = 2013 with Kalos additions except lol not really it's just Mega Kangaskhan stapled onto VGC 2013, and both of these formats are defined by their obnoxious omnipresence of legendaries. Specifically Cresselia, Heatran, and the genies. That's what VGC 2016 is -- a format that celebrates legendaries. VGC 2014, the Kalos Dex format, was anything but. In a format which banned Mewtwo and saw no relevance from the Kanto bird trio, what legendaries were there in VGC 2014? Oh, that's right: none. You could own your entire team on your actual game cartridge with relatively little difficulty and feel super awesome about it. Not like earlier and later formats which pressure players to either sit out, waste an inordinate amount of time on getting near-perfect legendaries, or cheat. That was always something that really turned me off VGC for years -- the establishment players were all big cheaters insofar as team building is concerned -- and it didn't apply (or need to apply) in VGC 2014 because anyone had reasonable access to creating their own proper VGC 2014 team without cheating. No legendaries = fun times ahead. Legendaries = get ready to waste a lot of hours of your life, or else cheat, or else don't play outside of simulators like Showdown.

I mean, me saying that the Kalos dex was bad is complete bias so I really should've kept that to myself.

The complete bias comes in the form of the fact that I just plain sucked in Kalos dex.

I see '16 being a bad year to start because of all the power being tossed around but again, I'm probably thinking too hard about this.

Well, I mean, I wasn't a medalist either but I still enjoyed the format best out of all the ones I've paid close-ish attention to. I don't think it's an accident that many/most casual and veteran players alike were saying, both last year and this year, that they hoped the next format would be another Kalos Dex-like format. Two years in a row their hopes have been dashed. (Although many/most establishment players seemed contentedly happy with the return of the 2013 format in 2015.)

Hmm, you just reminded me of a topic I was thinking about on the car ride home ...

Limited dex VGCs are the healthiest but also the worst ones to start in. If you start with a limited format, when the Pokemon pool expands people who are used to only thinking about a smaller set of Pokemon have a much harder time adjusting because its only their second year. As an example, I started in the year that was Unova dex only(I think this was 2011), and had a more difficult time adapting to the new threats of 2012 the following year.

I'm curious just because I wouldn't mind getting back into comp. pokemon, specifically because my job/other responsibilities take up so much time that my other hobby (Compettiive Smash) isn't that feasable at this point. The only complication that I have at this point is the whole restarting the game + restarting on obtaining the needed legends. but given the current state of OU it may be better. besides RanBats gets boring after a while. Mega Rayquaza may be silly but only time can tell.

Exactly what it says. I think about exactly what you described in your post; about how Firewater used to say Smogon was wrong to ban all the things that it bans, that it bans too much, that they have ban fever; about how people used to call you crazy; and about how you were proven right in the end and now have me and others for company.

oh fair enough.

Also i've been playing a good bit of randbats, and am around 1400 at this point. Is it just me or at that level it's more about the pokemon you get, and less of the skill?

I dunno. Daisy currently has 87 W to 60 L on the reset ladder and her Elo is already at 1635. Also the cutoff for Top 500 right now is 1654. So unless there are very few people on the reset ladder right now and they are clogging the top 500 with a boatload of alts, I'd say it's a fair bet that true, noteworthy skill can minimum take you at least as far as the 1600s before what you're thinking about would start to apply.

Today I'll be teaching you how to win with Defensive Ice. (Random Battle, 22 turns)

Spoiler: show
Nothing too special aside from the fact that I made a Game Freak staff member cry tears of joy. "It works ... it really does work ... :')" Yes, mystery Game Freak employee: your dream of a "defensive Ice type" that everyone laughed at has been made reality in this battle.

Now if only Avalugg could work this well in unfettered OU ...

Jeri don't even entertain the troll. It would take longer than some of the Pokemon on his "team" have been known of to pull off 19000 battles, let alone wins, if one were doing nothing but eating, sleeping, and battling.

It would take about 2 months and 6 days of battling nonstop to have 19000 wins.

plus about 6 months in order to maintain your 25% winrate :^)
