Lil' Bluey Because it is destiny that you and I can't live in the same world...

Pearl’s Perap – With Shane in critical condition, you swiftly call for him to come back so you can administer some treatment stat. The Ariados isn’t about to let her prey get away with escaping so easily however, as she immediately charges after him in heavy PURSUIT, pinning the poor puppet beneath her legs. Shane grimaces as he reacts by blasting a ball of darkness point-blank at her face, and she screams as he manages to wiggle away in the confusion and limply lift himself to your side. You hurriedly apply medicine to the scarred spot, and though the sickly color starts to fade at least the damage done still appears pretty nasty, bits of fluff continuing to fall out from the open cloth with nothing to hold it in place.

Despite this, Shane gives a weak grin and thumbs-up as he rotates around to confront his opponent again, who shrieks in rage as she raises her claw, SLASHing directly at Shane with NIGHT’s fury. The Banette winces in pain from the powerful blow but doesn’t budge, taking the severe strike straight-on as it impales and further splits open his stitches, stuffing spilling everywhere. A smirk forms on his zippered lips though as he reveals the trick up his sleeve: a tiny needle stuck surreptitiously into the spider’s side. For a flickering second, a thin red thread attached to the pin shimmers into view, leading right back to Shane’s own faintly beating heart (almost visible now through the ripped fabric), linking the pair and binding their fates together. Sneering in triumph, Shane closes his eyes as he fully succumbs to his injuries, the arachnid writhing in shock and agony as she finds herself simultaneously dragged down with him despite her desperate efforts to cut the line connecting the two. Finally, she too falls completely still.

Ariados is unable to battle! Slowking and Banette each gain +2 Levels!

At this moment, Doug manages to free Flabébé at last, and the two hurry over to check on their fallen comrade. Removing a puff of pollen from her crown, Flabébé gently places it on top of the broken doll, clasping her hands in prayer as she WISHes for the wounds to be fixed. …Miraculously, the tear seems to start to repair itself, slowly mending back together. Flabébé then turns to you with a reassuring smile.

“He’ll be all right. It will just take some time to recover, so long as he rests.”

Just then, you hear a deep groan rumble loudly behind you as you all revolve around to see the Great Tree trembling, as if striving to break free from its cocoon. Strangely, at the same time the Ariados’s comatose body and scattered Spinarak seem to fade into wisps of smoke, rising up and returning as a dark cloud to somewhere far off in the forest. With the source of evil energy seemingly dispelled, the webbing coated over the oak begins to dissolve as well, soon melting into nothing like snow after the spring. A single knot bored into the bark emerges through the dissipating silver, gradually opening to reveal an enormous red eye as it gazes solemnly down at you. The whole earth shakes slightly as what you come to recognize is in fact a titanic Trevenant stretches its roots and branches in relief, drawing up to its full tremendous height to welcome the sun again after so long.

“Thank you for freeing me from the witches’ curse, young one. This scourge was cast upon me by the mischievous Mistresses of the Mansion: four wicked sisters who delight in causing suffering and misfortune to others. Little fairy, you came seeking your friend, correct? From here I see all that goes on within these woods… I witnessed him follow the forbidden flame to their lair, before I was set upon by those horrid monsters… You will surely find him there, if it is not too late…”

How do you respond?

A Horsea and two Ledyba join your company. You quickly order Holster to cloak your movements with a Smokescreen. The Water type is a little unsteady at first, but steadies herself as she emits the smoky haze. You can still make out the faint glow of the eyes, however you're unsure whether or not they can see you. Izzy quickly gets to work fashioning some defensive screens, while Dizzy makes sure you and your Pokemon are safeguarded against statuses.

With the defences in place, you start to inch your way towards Marco, who is slowly regaining his footing. As soon as you start to advance however, the attacks start. Shadow Balls and Shadow Claws burst and scrape against the screens. Will-O-Wisps beat against the Safeguard, but for now your defences hold strong. Through the thin Smokescreen, you can just make out the forms of the Pokemon as they pull themselves from the walls and ceiling. Slabs of stone held together by ghostly tendrils, the Runerigus had you outnumbered easily. Marco stumbles towards you, the Runerigus striking him as he desperately scrambles for safety. There's no telling how much more the Pancham can handle and cracks are beginning to form in the screens. There was no way of knowing when this assault would stop, how long could your defences hold for?

Things were falling apart even faster than Sweeney was accustomed to. Considering the situation, the Bartender is left somewhat bereft, unsure exactly what the trick behind this current trial room was. Try as he might, he couldn't uncover the wrinkle that would allow them to triumph. However, one thing was dramatically clear - Marco was only going to continue to worsen the situation. Deal with the simple, and reassess. Recalling Pokemon until he only had Izzy, Dizzy and Holster near him, the Bartender gives a curt nod, an unambiguous signal to keep doing what they were doing.

Then it hit him. They attacked when he moved. Could it be so simple?

Stopping in his tracks, Sweeney reaches within his bag, pulling out two Poke Balls. One belonged to Marco, with the intention being to recall the Pancham and put an end to his mischief, at least for now. He'd inevitably pop back out once the heat had died down a little, given how involved in this quest he was, but better safe than sorry. The second housed Leonardo. The Chikorita was a newer addition, but he was far more level headed than Marco. Sweeney was sure he could rely on the Grass type.

As Leonardo appears with a flash of crimson, he notices the situation is dire fairly quickly. With a determined nod, the Grass type positions himself just outside the range of the Safeguard created by Dizzy, readying a Grasswhistle. If standing still did in fact halt the assault of the Runerigus, hopefully a short nap would give them time to make a break for the captured Falinks.

With your extremely awkward exit, Andrew stood there puzzled as you returned. The man just patiently awaited your return in the break room and gave you a quick wave as you entered. Walking past you, he motioned for you to follow him out of the facility. With where you currently were at, you were quite a ways away from the temple you needed to head to.

Without hesitation, Andrew immediately lept forward and headed towards the navel, carrying a hefty backpack with him. You could see that from the size of it that he was prepared for about any situation. It was more than likely going to help with what you'd need it to do. But, for now, it was nothing more than a distraction piece, and you were quickly losing ground.

Pace quickening, you manage to catch back up to Andrew, seeing the environment change before your eyes. The trees of the grotto were changing, and the underbrush was becoming thicker by the minute. The amount of foliage was starting to get detrimental, and you were starting to lose your pace.

After what felt like an hour, you finally see a small clearing ahead. Andrew was stopped right before the entrance, hiding within the thicket. Looking out into the clearing, you could see a group of Pansage destroy a small object. It was metallic and looked familiar to the objects used by the poachers you had interacted with before. They were extremely riled up, and looked hostile for anyone that may be coming by. Andrew looked at you, seeming to wait on your decision on how to proceed.

What do you do?

Connor:

Quick on your feet, you take out both Marco's ball as well as your Chikorita's. You are quick to recall the Pancham, hoping that with the panda Pokemon out of the way your challenge will be a lot easier. As for the other one, you send out Leonardo and order him to use a Grass Whistle. The soothing, high pitched sound calms some of the attacking Runerigus and put them to sleep. It wasn't enough to stop the horde from attacking you completely, but it put their numbers at a much more manageable number.

Pushing forwards, your defensive formation continues to whither the onslaught from the Runerigus. You inch closer and closer towards the Falinks, before seeing the small figure become more and more prominent within the smokescreen. The leading Falink and its companion gain a look of excitement as you near closer and closer. Though, before you are fully able to reach it, the entire room fills with a black mist.

Before you could process what was going on, the Runerigus move together and start to channel a large scale attack. Large amounts of energy beings to pile up and convulse, before being fired in a straight beam at you. Your Pokemon are quick to move to block the attack and push their defenses forward to help defend from the onslaught.

The first thing to break is the Safeguard, and Dizzy is send flying as her barrier fails to keep up. Izzy holds strong with his Reflect and Light Screen, but you could hear the Reflect shatter as the beam pushes through it. At this point, you were only left with the Light Screen, and you could hear cracks forming on the shield. You needed something to reinforce it fast, or risk being blown to bits.

What do you do?

Hugo, alongside his quirky guide, watched as the Pansage destroyed the poacher’s device. He couldn’t blame them, really. The poachers were, after all, pretty loathsome criminals, so Hugo was certainly in no mood to defend them. Nevertheless, if Hugo intended to find the missing Grookey, it appeared he was going to have to get past this angry monkey mob who would almost undoubtedly assume he was in some way affiliated with the poachers.

Andrew didn’t seem like he had any real idea on what to do next. He was apparently more of a lover than a fighter. But he did get them this far, so Hugo knew it was only fair that he get them past this obstacle.

“Boy, they really are fired up, aren’t they?” Hugo whispered to Andrew. “I guess we need to cool things down a bit.”

Andrew stared blankly at Hugo.

“Ah, forget it.”

Hugo suddenly leapt to his feet and rushed screaming toward the Pansage. Was this really the smartest thing to do? Probably not.

He came to stop just as he reached them; realizing he was just as surprised at his actions as they were. Hugo momentarily forgot what it was he intended to do. Until he remembered.

He quickly pulled two Pokeballs and released their residents nearby. Mr. Mime, who Hugo kept on board, along with a tiny, white snowball of a creature; Galarian Darumaka. The Ice-types were a bit taken aback to be immediately confronted by the enraged Pansage group, and quickly looked to Hugo for direction before they were ripped to pieces.

“Oh gosh, uh…Mr. Mime, cool them off with Triple Axel! Darumaka, use Powder Snow!

With the offer of treatment from his trainer, Shane turns to leave the battle momentarily and is quickly met by the charging body of the Ariados in hot pursuit. Not wanting to lose her lunch, the spider pins the Banette against the ground with her spindly legs. Unable to receive the help from Zak, the Marionette Pokémon summons a ball of shadowy energy to smack the spider in the face. Recoiling from the attack, the Ariados gives Shane the chance to make his way over to his trainer and the Full Heal he had on offer. Though the medicine seemed to work how it should, the spectral doll was not looking in the best of shape, his innards still spilling from the large gash in his cloth. Despite this seemingly serious injury, Shane gives his trainer one of their signature thumbs up before turning to face his foe once more. Retaliating from the last attack, Ariados slashes at her prey once again - her fatal mistake. In the moment the two made contact, the Banette had managed to bond their destinies together via a thin thread and a concealed pin. Despite her best efforts, the giant arachnid cannot sever this tie and, as Shane succumbs to his injuries, so too does she.
Shane the Banette levels up from Lv42 to Lv44 & Doug the Slowking levels up from Lv27 to Lv29

With the conclusion of the battle comes the eventual release of the Flabébé. The moment she frees herself, she quickly accompanies Doug in hurrying to check on the fallen Banette. Removing a pollen puff from atop her crown, the Fairy performs a wishful incantation to relieve Shane's wounds. As Zak watched on in at the sight before him in awe, the tear created by the Ariados begins to disappear as it repairs itself slowly but surely. Miracle complete, the Flabébé advises that with rest the possessed doll would be back to his abnormal self.

Before the man can congratulate and recall either of his team mates, a deep rumbling groan echoes around the clearing. Spinning on his heel, Zak quickly notices the Great Tree attempting to break free of the shackles of the webbing. As he does, the spiders who had been dealt with vanished into puffs of smoke that gathered and dissipated quickly into the woodland. With their departure, the sticky webs begin to vanish as well, eventually freeing the tree and leaving the clearing completely clear of the precarious trappings. With the webs gone, a knot in the tree blinked to reveal a large crimson eye and the earth begins to shake all around. The Great Tree was indeed a great tree in the fact he wasn't a tree at all. The large trunk before the group belonged to a tremendous Trevenant who stretches its now-freed appendages out to the sunlight in relief. Looking down upon the group, the Trevenant thanked them for their assistance and spoke of how the curse that had marred its branches was placed upon the colossal Elder Tree Pokémon by a group of sinister sisters: the Mistresses of the Mansion. These women didn't sound like the sort of people you would want to mess with, apparently delighting in the misfortune of others. Perhaps after some rest, Shane could show they what that really meant but for now, the man simply wanted to help their guide.

"Thank you for your words, Great Tree. If we get going now, we'll hopefully find my companion's friend before they gets themselves into too much danger - are you ready to go, Flabébé?" Zak wasn't sure if he was trying to allay the fears of the fairy or himself as he turned to speak to her but he knew they had to think fast if the lair of the Mistresses was such an unsavoury place. Following his guide's advice, the man turned to the two Pokémon who had assisted him so well and returned them to their capsules to rest up for the time being with a grateful nod. He still had Tim and a few other members of his team that he could rely on but for the time being Zak decided to accompany the Flabébé alone so the pair could make haste.

Perception of time becomes distorted, everything slowing down until the battleground was wiped clear from your peripheral; just the three falling bodies and the raging behemoth ahead. You had to regroup and fast. With the Farium in Impidimp’s mitts about to go nuclear, the plan could quite literally blow up in your face, if gravity didn’t get you first.

You fold your limbs to lower wind resistance, making a bearing for Impidimp – only hoping Corviknight will do the same when he comes to. You’re able to swiftly close the distance, arms snaring him mid-flight and directing him toward the desired target. It crosses your mind the calls for rescue might fall on deaf ears, forcing you to guide your fall directly into the shadowy enemy like a kamikaze plane. Something seems to stir in the Corviknight though and not a moment too soon, his freefall shifting into a glide as he swoops you up and into the eye of the storm. The fallen Guardian attempts a last-ditch volley of Arrows, Thousands of barbs exploding outward yet doing nothing to slow the moving train. Your gallant steed is willing to risk life and limb for the cause, arrows puncturing his steel armour as he inches to the finish line. The newborn knows his cue, fighting the turbulence to clamber up to Corviknight’s crown and plunge headfirst, body combusting with unbridled fairy energy. The Twinkle Tackle propels him ahead like a rocket, painting a streak of rainbow against the monochrome canvas before striking the titan head on.

You feel your seat buckle all over again as Corviknight veers from the blast zone, the colourful detonation threatening to burn your retina as the screech of a hundred cells permeates throughout the warzone. The Raven Pokemon catches a glimpse of the comatose Impidimp ricocheting from the explosion, snatching him in a talon before swerving back toward the beast. What remained was an ugly sight, its head blown clean off with shadowy cells attempting desperately to seal the lesion. You would spare it no such chance, the artefact practically burning as you readied your aim. Time seems to come to a complete stop as you lob it ahead, its pulsing glow reaching a crescendo as it crashes against the open wound...

Spoiler: show

The Hunters Guild

You come to with a weary groan, eyes glazed over with the remnants of a dream… or was it more of a nightmare? The cabin comes into focus with an air of familiarity, bars of morning sun breaking through the windows shedding some light on its rugged, rustic features. You were swaddled in warm furs, your teammates huddled around you in fierce guard. Their ears seem to prick up upon hearing your rumbling, an affectionate pile-on quickly ensuing. Your companions give you some space upon sensing your weakness, the commotion drawing the attention of a pair of familiar faces; Orma greets you with a perky smile while Ammorith hobbles in tow on a set of crutches, otherwise looking considerably healthier than he had during his imprisonment.

“We did it. YOU did it.” He says simply, eyes glazing as though he might break into tears.

“You were in a pretty nasty condition when we found you,” Orma remarks, “We thought you might be a goner but when Tapu Bulu came to, they healed you up like it was nothing!”

“They even used their magic to help Impidimp retrieve Lilev’s soul from the underworld!” The pair of hunters step aside to give you a view of the other beds, which were filled with the sacrificial bodies, alive and well. Impidimp’s cheeks flush purple as he shuffles his foot in a bashful manner; he seems to have gained some closure in righting the wrong of his past life.

“I also took the liberty of making your registration to the Hunter’s guild official. You’re one of us now, I even assembled you a uniform.” Orma gestures to a package at the end of your bed, chock with various gear including an Assault Vest and Rocky Helmet , equipment you could have sorely benefitted from in battle. The pair offer you some privacy and after some time you stagger to the nearest window, its picturesque mountain view soothing to the soul. Then a familiar glint of red and yellow comes into focus; the Guardian had been seemingly watching over you for some time. You amble out to the balcony to greet them, the scene of your covert departure many moons ago.

I must offer my gratitude for your work in saving the Cradle. You endured tortures which no human should have to endure – the Guardians are forever in your debt.

While peace had been restored the Guardian looks stoic as ever, facing out contemplatively at the endless stretch of wildwood.

The purification triggered a reaction so immense that Zygarde’s cells were scattered across every corner of the Cradle. It will take some time for them to reassemble.

I will be taking a more active role in protecting these lands until then. It was my complacency that allowed these events to transpire, a mistake that can only be atoned through action.

I must head back to Zalfarthas to continue work healing the forest, as well as the minds of the creatures that reside in it. But before I do that – I leave you with a small parting gift.

With a swing of its tail, a set of painted armour materialises before you. They were the plates it wore into battle, weathered and punctured with arrow holes. It had seemingly fashioned a new shell since shedding this one, the wood on its back sporting a look of fresh paint. It was an unusual gift by any standard, though it would be wise to mask any emotion short of gratitude. It seems Ammorith and Orma can’t leave you alone for more than one second, breaking onto the balcony shortly after with a look of shared awe.

“Woah, that would make a nifty finish to your Hunter armour”, Ammorith suggests, fawning over the beaten wood.

“I doubt that’s the first thing on his mind Amm’, after all he’s been through. Besides, I could see Xander fashioning armour to match his Corviknight's. Did you see how gallant they looked flying into battle?” You take little notice of Hunters’ playful back and forth, gazing reflectively over the panoramic mountainscape as Tapu Bulu shrinks into it. The sun was peaking over the hilltops, bringing a new day full of new adventures. You had likely had your fill as far as the Arboreal Cradle was concerned but it would ready and waiting for when you returned, as sure as the cycle of life and death. THE END

You are awarded 1x Assault Vest, 1x Rocky Helmet and 1x Bulu Shell (teaches TR Grassy Terrain). Corviknight and Impidimp gain two levels for their role in the battle while the rest of your active party gain one level. This marks the end of your Arboreal Cradle adventure. It was probably my most ambitious in terms of length and scale so it feels incredibly satisfying to see it through to completion – hope you enjoyed yourself, PTSD aside.
Corviknight reached lvl 45!
Impidimp reached lvl 37!
Empoleon reached lvl 52!
Dreepy reached lvl 11!
Ivysaur reached lvl 35!

Claiming the Assault Vest, Rocky Helmet and Bulu Shell (teaches TR Grassy Terrain). Thanks so much for this adventure Emp, it was truly spectacular. I wish I didn't collapse right as it ended but it was epic nonetheless. Now to drown the bad thoughts out with alcohol!

Thinking that Andrew had no clue on how to actually proceed, you decide to go in guns blazing. The Pansage instantly stop destroying the device and looked at you with puzzled confusion as you ran out like a screaming idiot. The group of grass monkeys huddle together and prepare for battle since to them you looked like a hostile predator. Then again, based on your actions, do you really blame them?

Sending out your Galarian Mr. Mine and Galarian Darumaka, you have the ice types prepare to freeze the pants off of these monkeys. With their orders in place, Mr. Mime lets out a Triple Axel on the nearest Pansage, catching it by surprise with the first kick, and hitting it while it is still dealing with the second. With the third, however, the Pansage manages to bounce up into the air and out of the way, bring able to read the telegraphed attack it was about to receive.

Meanwhile, your Darumaka uses a Powder Snow, sending out a frosty chill across all of the monkies. they shriek, not being too used to the cold, but that only lights the fire in their hearts more to strike back. Shaking off the sleet, the biggest Pansage stares directly at your Darumaka. Punching its fists into the ground, the Pansage pulls out explosive seeds and starts to throw them like bombs at your Darumaka. The small ice daruma can take the heat, well, until it starts to get pelted by two other Pansage's seed bombs.

Your Mr. Mime, on the other hand, was dealing with two Pansage. The one that is so gracefully kicked in the face, and another that rushed to its aid. There was a third Pansage you could see over there, the one that's still destroying the object. Seemed it was too consumed with rage to notice everything else that went on. As for your Pokemon, it was dealing with a barrage of Fury Swipes, being both scratched in the face and the legs. You were extremely outnumbered here.

Andrew, sighing as he follows you, takes out a Poke Ball. It was a Nest ball, and it had a banana sticker on it. Sending it out, you could see a Simisage start to take form. THe Pansage, seeing the Simisage, immediately halt their assault, and watch it closely.

"Okay, let out an Uproar!" Andrew ordered, and the Simisage gave a nod before racketed into boisterous song. A few of the Pansage immediately freeze up in terror and leave, but a few are still a little too pissed off b the provocation to leave.

Looking out at the clearing, the ones remaining is the biggest one, the one kicked in the face, and the one destroying the device, still oblivious to the whole situation.

With much more manageable numbers, there was a chance to turn this around. What do you do?

Hugo was relieved – but also surprised – that Andrew and his impressive Simisage. Maybe despite all his eccentricities, Andrew was more capable than he let on. Then again, who was Hugo to judge? Yes, Andrew was weird, but Hugo was the one who ran screaming into a gaggle of enraged primates with a half-baked defense plan in place. Maybe together they would be able to mount a competent plan to reach the monkey king.

Regardless, Simisage’s appearance on the scene helped even out the odds with the Pansage crew, but they weren’t in the clear yet. They still had three more monkeys to go through, and they were pissed. Hugo had a nagging suspicion that the poacher’s tracking device may be significant in trying to find the missing Grookey, so he would need to get it before one of the last remaining Pansage reduced it to spare parts. Needless to say, the big Pansage and the kicked-in-the-face Pansage weren’t going to let them pass without a fight. Kicked-in-the-face was staring daggers at Mr. Mime, and who could blame him? Mr. Mime was going to need to take him down. As for the big Pansage, Hugo got the feeling that Simisage would be better set dealing with him than little Darumaka. But that would mean Darumaka would need to get his hands on the device. Hugo thought he could do it.

“Andrew, can Simisage take on the big one? Leave the rest to me.”

He surveyed the scene. Kicked-in-the-face was rearing back to attack, and Mr. Mime was bracing for impact in lieu of direction from Hugo.

“Mr. Mime, stop it in its tracks with Icy Wind! Then knock it back with Ice Shard!”

He turned to Darumaka. The tiny snow creature danced anxiously from foot to foot.

“Alright, Darumaka, see that Pansage there? He’s got something we need. I’m going to need you to cool him down, okay? Can you do that? I think you can. Knock him off guard with Take Down and then shut him down with Freeze-Dry!”

Lil' Bluey An evil wind is blowing...

Pearl’s Perap – Flabébé nods fervently in response to your query, eager to set off in search of her friend.

“Yes, let’s hurry please. I dread to think what could’ve become of the poor child…” Turning to the towering Trevanant, she bows deeply in gratitude. “Thank you, o Great Tree. We will be off now.”

“Fare well, young one. I pray that you find your friend swiftly. I must rest now to recover my strength, for a deep slumber calls… May fortune be at your side.”

With that, the colossal creature quietly closes its eye, growing as still and silent as the surrounding grove. Flabébé lifts her head and looks at you once again, determination filling the fae’s face.

“Come on, I know where the Mansion lies. It’s a dangerous place, so be careful.” Biting her lip, she mutters softly to herself. “We’ve always been warned not to go near, so why…”

Her tone trails off as she shakes her head and starts to lead the way, and you tag after with mounting concern. Twisting and turning along the winding paths, it feels almost as if the forest itself is trying to throw you off track, but your little fairy guide firmly presses on. Eventually, a beacon of light beckons up ahead, and you step into a wide clearing to behold the…

Magical Mansion

A grand manor made of solid gray brick stands tall before you, resembling perhaps an ancient castle more than a modern monument. The building’s beauty is breathtaking in all its extravagant splendor – but at the same time seemingly bereft of living beings (besides the numerous vines of ivy and glory clambering up the sizeable sides of the stone construct). Despite such pristine majesty and well-groomed grounds, any personal sign of the homeowner’s presence appears to be missing, almost as if too immaculate to be inhabited. Rather, the house itself seems to teem with some kind of spiritual energy – the same sensed from the spiders before they dispersed. The structure sighs as its wooden gate creaks open in obvious invitation, and a chill wind practically pushes you towards the front porch steps. Doubtfully, you ascend the staircase and enter inside the foyer, as the temporarily granted access gradually swings shut behind you.

The main entrance hall is just as magnificent as its exterior, floor covered with a thick, regal red carpet extending from the entryway to two dividing stairwells. Framed between them is a pedestal commanded by a giant suit of armor, sword and shield imposed in either hand. Behind the statue hangs a massive painting depicting what appears to be the mansion’s own silhouette in the distance, but darkened in shadow as night descends upon the woods. Above the center of the circular chamber, an impressively intricate wire chandelier dangles from the ceiling – yet none of its receptacles are apparently illuminated at the moment. As you crane your neck to absorb the crystals’ striking sight, you suddenly hear giggling voices echo through the air:

“Welcome to our home, dear traveler
Would you like to play a game?
Defeat each of us in turn
And light the four flames
But beware, for if you lose
Your soul belongs to us
Now, which way do you choose?”

From the second level, you perceive the sound of more doors opening – presumably one on either side of the stairs – as well as to the left and right walls of the lobby. Clearly you’re meant to pass some sort of test if you have any hope of progressing – or leaving in one piece with soul intact, for that matter.

Which way do you go?

Andrew nods towards you as he recalls his Simisage, replacing the pokemon with an Infernape. The area was already a lot quieter, and it allowed you to focus more on your next move. With a plan already formulated, you order your Mr. Mime and Darumaka to go after the other two Pokemon as Andrew focused on the larger than normal Pansage.

Your Mr. Mime continues his icy assault against his foe, tapping a few steps before spewing out an icy wind. The frigid air washes over the Pansage, chilling it to the bone. The grass monkey doesn't take this too kindly and unleashes a Seed Bomb of its own to bombard your Pokemon. You can only watch as they explode around the mime, the ice and psychic type yowling in pain.

But, this only fuels Mr. Mime's determination even more. Creating frozen shards of ice, he prepares to fire them at his foe. With a wry grin, the Mr/ Mime does a little tap dance and sends the shards flying. The Pansage is caught completely off guard by the speed of the attack and gets hit with the full brunt of the attack. It realizes that this battle will only end in it losing and runs away.

Meanwhile, your Darumaka tackles the Pansage destroying the device with a powerful take down attack. THe Pansage is completely caught off guard, and suddenly screeches out when it realizes what exactly is happening. But, at this point, it was getting a freeze-dry straight to the face. This cleanly knocks the Pansage out, who seemed to use most of its strength and energy working towards destroying the device.

Your pokemon have gained a level from their quick battle!

At this point, you smell charred fur and burning leaves as you look towards the bigger Pansage. It was completely knocked out and singed, with Andrew's Infernape's fist alight with bright flames. They soon go out, and the fire monkey is recalled. Walking over to the bigger Pansage, Andrew pulls out a revive and a sitrus berry and uses both on the Pansage. The bigger monkey looks around before running off as well.

"Something riled them up, and I don't think it was just the strange object," Andrew muttered, a serious expression on his face. While eccentric, he certainly was devoted to the preservation of the primates here in the grotto.

That just left the Pansage who was beating up the device, and the device itself. Looking at the object, you suddenly feel a chill crawl up your spine. Was someone, or something watching you? Of course, you could take it, help the Pansage, do both, or just press forwards. There was a myriad of possibilities that could happen here, but it was for you to decide on.

What do you do?

Hugo recalled Mr. Mime and Darumaka to their Pokeballs, giving the Ice-types some well deserved rest after having dispatched of the furious Pansage. But there was certainly something eerie going on, he decided, as he examined the tracking device. Who was doing this to the Pansage? More importantly, why were they doing this to the Pansage?

Hugo looked down at Darumaka’s fallen opponent, still conked out from the Freeze-Dry. Sure, it was an obstacle Hugo needed to get past in order to find the missing Grookey, but Hugo couldn’t help but pity the creature. Something…someone…was trying to mess with it, and it was only trying to defend itself. And Hugo had a nagging suspicion that whatever was going on with the Pansage somehow had something to do with the missing Grookey, though he couldn’t quite explain what or why.

He cradled the Grass-type’s head in his hands gently, and looked to Andrew.

“Quite the impressive ape collection you’ve got there yourself,” Hugo mentioned, referencing Simisage and Infernape. “You have any more of those revives and berries for this one?

Something is wrong here, as you’ve alluded to. I know we have to find the Grookey, but I…we need to help these Pansage. Whatever this is and whoever put it here,” he said gesturing toward the device, “we need to get to the bottom of it.”

He gently placed the Pansage back down and grabbed the device, examining it. “Seems like some sort of…tracking device? Surveillance? I’m not sure. But we need to figure it out. Where should we begin?”

With the tremendous Trevenant in need of slumber followings its arachnid infestation and the Flabébé keen to press on through the forest, it was time for Zak and his Fairy type guide to leave the now-quiet clearing and head in the direction of the mysterious manor in search of the missing infant. Though the Flabébé had always been taught to be cautious of the manor and its inhabitants, the fairy seemed to flit confidently through the trees, leading to the man along paths that wound hither and thither, back and forth. If it wasn’t for his guide, Zak thought about how hopelessly lost he would have found himself in such woodland, even with his team mates to help. Eventually, though, light could be seen coming from a clearing up ahead and the towering grey manor came into sight for the pair.

Taking in the sheer size and majesty of the mansion, Zak was taken aback by such a large building being built so deep within an inaccessible forest. The two hadn’t followed a proper road to get there yet there it was, castle-like in its stature, towering over most of the trees that surrounded it. Deciding to get a closer look and see if he could scope out any signs of life, the man wandered towards a small fence around the property, trying to glance into the ornate windows as he did. The place looked deserted and practically untouched, unnerving the trainer slightly and causing his hand to instinctively head towards the capsules containing his team mates. In a moment, he had disengaged a Psychic Ball on his belt and the humanoid form of a Gardevoir appeared in the clearing before him.

“Andrew, I want you to try and stay abreast of anything amiss here - I can’t see anything right now but this place is leaving me with a funny feeling...”

At once, the majestic Psychic type nodded and placed himself between his trainer and the mansion. Having consoled himself with the presence of his Gardevoir, Zak motioned towards the Flabébé to get her attention before pointing his index finger towards the manor. Before the two could properly formulate a plan of action, though, a strange wind saw the trio practically pushed towards a phantom gate which swung open upon at their arrival. With the strange building seeming to implore them to come inside, the group ascended stone steps and passed through the doors which ominously thudded behind them at once.

The inside of the structure is just as beautiful and magnificent as its outside, with regal red carpets and a set of impressive stairwells. Between them, a giant suit of armor stands atop a pedestal with sword and shield in hand and a scene hangs above with the mansion in silhouette. High above the room, an unlit chandelier made of what looked to be crystal. Though the manor’s decor was beyond opulent and there didn’t seem to be a hair out of place inside much like in the grounds and something continued to niggle at the man about the strange place. There was a eerie feeling that clung to him from the moment he crossed the threshold, bristling at the tiny hairs on the back of his neck as he stood side by side with the Flabébé behind the protective Andrew. All of a sudden, a series of disembodied giggling voices manifest themselves, startling the man and causing the Gardevoir to assume a defensive pose before his two companions:

“Welcome to our home, dear traveler
Would you like to play a game?
Defeat each of us in turn
And light the four flames
But beware, for if you lose
Your soul belongs to us
Now, which way do you choose?”

Nearby, the opening of numerous doors could be heard in unison, two of which sounded as if they had echoed down from the staircases either side of the lobby. Given that it sounded like doors had opened on the same level as the trio found themselves stood, one of those seemed like the best place to start. With a decision made, Zak turned to the Gardevoir to see if he had any contest to this but he did not seem to, choosing to instead change his position to once again stand defensively between the man, their guide and the unknown that awaited behind the doorway to the left of the lobby...

Lil' Bluey How inconsiderate!

Pearl’s Perap – With Gardevoir on guard leading the way, your group approaches the doorway to the immediate left of the lobby with great caution, peering warily within. Your gaze is immediately greeted with what appears to be – of all things – an enormous grand bathroom. Gold and white ceramic tiles stretch across the expansive floor, brightly shining and spotless. Everything is pristinely polished to such a point it’s almost blinding. Long counters line either side of the room, with deluxe plush benches before them; even the sink faucet fixtures and massive mirror frames are gilded with lavish floral trim. Marveling at the marble setup, your eyes are inevitably drawn to the chamber’s centerpiece: a giant circular washtub, almost the size of a small pool. A fanciful Roselia fountain poised gracefully like a ballerina replenishes water from above, complementing the rococo relief on the ceiling. The domed fresco depicts a detailed fantasy scene of a fleet of ships sailing over the sea, as the setting’s background slowly shifts from sun to stars the further it scrolls. Matching the maritime mural, you curiously spot a miniature boat in a bottle sitting by the rim of the central basin, which is already filled to the brim with bountiful soap foam and scented flower petals.

Amidst the round rainbow spheres, one particularly pink one stands out, for it is plainly much larger than its bubbly brethren. As you squint through the veil of steam and iridescent effervescence, you become aware of a beautiful song echoing against the space’s acoustics, like a siren’s haunting croon. Clearly close to the source of the sound, you frown in concentration whilst focusing on the frothy form where the humming seems to be coming from, and can make out the shape of what seems to be a royal crown adorning its crest. The regal figure then gradually revolves around to reveal a pair of pursed ruby lips and sapphire eyes with thick, dark lashes – which blink in surprise at the sight of an intruder, before the owner unleashes an ungodly shriek and shrinks deeper into the tub.

“Eek, a Peeping Tom! How rude! Don’t you know to knock first? How dare you barge in on a lady when she’s in the washroom?”

The pink ball puffs up in rage, bath boiling beneath her as she rises up again, floating just above the surface in order to expose her full body – which you realize belongs to a female Jellicent. You stare in puzzlement, baffled by the fact you’re being accused of invading a Pokémon’s privacy in the powder room when you were practically invited inside (nevermind at this point she apparently has no more shame to hide).

How do you respond?

The situation was beginning to look grim. Leonardo had managed some success, but it wasn't enough to complete halt the relentless assault, the stony Runerigus continuing with their merciless brutality. It isn't long before the Safeguard surrounding the group blinks out of existence, sputtering pitifully as it falls. Soon after sparks of pink light shower the surroundings as the Reflect pane implodes, leaving only the somewhat flimsy Light Screen - but cracks were already starting to form, and sweat dotted the brow of Sweeney, unseen behind his helmet. Considering his options, the Bartender is left despondent for a moment, the mocking image of the captured Falinks floating tantalisingly just out of reach. Clenching his fists, hearing the leather strain, Sweeney huddles for a moment's respite, grasping at straws until finally the inkling of an idea begins to take root.

At this point it seemed evident that the Smokescreen was doing little to help, so Sweeney began by recalling Holster, making a mental note to indulge the Horsea later. She had tried her best, even if the ultimate result was found wanting. With Izzy and Dizzy flanking him, Sweeney calls Athena and Sophie back out, relaying the slightly more complex plan.

Izzy would focus on reinforcing his Light Screen and conjuring another Reflect, while Dizzy would set Safeguard up, summoning a Tailwind afterwards, hopefully allowing them to make that final push and cross the remaining distance quicker. Athena and Sophie would be on a cycling protective duty - alternating between Protect and Snarl and Protect and Charm respectively, blocking as many incoming attacks as possible to give Izzy whatever cover they could manage for his screens while weakening the impact of each individual blow. Leonardo would continue his Grass Whistle - ideally he could once again lull a few of their assailants to sleep.

Andrew ponders for a bit, trying to think of the best action with the Pansage you were cradling. Compared to the other Pansage's he had seen, this one was a little different. Stronger, but more prone to rage.

"I think this one was released by a trainer," Andrew states as he rummages through his bag. He blinks a little bit, shaking the bag a bit before sighing.

"I'm out of standard Revives. I do have this." He produces a Revival Herb from his bag. "They are incredibly bitter, so it'll probably react poorly, but it does need to be revived."

Walking over, he gently opens the Pansage's mouth and puts the herb in. He gently makes it chew the item, the bitterness bringing the Pansage to life. It bolts awake and looks at you with curious eyes. It then spits in your face, the bitterness finally overcoming it.

The grass-type then gets out of your arms and looks around curiously. It has calmed down for now, and that was definitely a good sign. It ran aback a bit, wary of both you and Andrew. You could tell it was definitely on edge around humans but was curious about you specifically. It seemed to crave human affection but didn't know how to handle it.

You turn your attention to the tracking device. There was something definitely wrong here, and you could tell the Pansage were being targetted now. With the device here, and how the group was acting, it didn't feel like this was the first time it happened.

"Hmm, if they were targeting the Grookey, and now the Pansage, they are probably trying to attract the King of the Forest. The main home of the Pansage is further along the path to the temple," Andrew stated, still watching the Pansage. He gave it a hand motion as if the assuage the Pansage it was safe to go.

"We should be a little wary as we head forwards."

What do you do?

Connor-

Recalling two of your Pokemon, your send out your Chikorita in their stead. With his assistance, you're able to re-erected the barrier enough to fend off the attack. The entire area explodes in flashing light, and once its fades the Runerigous are gone. Izzy let out a sigh, glad that he was able to hold off the attack.

All participating Pokemon have earned a level!

You manage to reach the Falink, your team keeping their defenses up in case the ghost-type Pokemon reappear. With that, the orb containing it disperses. Brass, and the one you saved so far, go up and greet their comrade. The trio rejoices in being together again and gives you a look of thanks. Though, this was far from over, as there were three more trials to go.

Falinks has gained two levels, becoming Lv. 6! It has learned Iron Defense!

You hear a rumbling sound as the wall behind the Falink begins to fade into the ground. A passageway appears, beckoning you onwards into your next trial. Heading forwards, you notice that the hallway was brightly lit, compared to the dim one you went into for the previous room. Seeing the chamber, you quickly head inside to see a bright light.

Despite the eerie voices that had rang through the entrance hall moments ago, Zak and his companions decided to press deeper onwards into the manor through the now-open door to the left hand side of the foyer with Andrew the Gardevoir taking the lead. Through the door, the trio found themselves stepping out in to the most glorious and grand bathroom the man had ever seen in his life - not exactly the scare the three were expecting.

In the centre of the lavish space, a huge washtub that was more akin to a paddling pool in its size served as the room's central feature. At the edge of the bath, a Roselia-shaped fountain poured water from above, complimenting the decor of the space perfectly. Whoever was in charge of decorating certainly had taste and Zak began to daydream about taking a soak in the bounteous bubbles, barely even noticing the mysterious vocals that seemed to be floating out from the water. He couldn't remember the last time he had taken a good soak and the bath looked just perfect. Taking a step closer to further admire the bath, a bigger bubble could be seen through the steam, all round and pink.

Stepping closer still to the huge pink bubble and the song that seemed to be emanating from within, it soon became clear that this wasn't a bubble after all; the sphere revolving to reveal a female Jellicent who was instantly taken by surprise. By the time the man had realised what he was gawking at in the tub, the Jellicent had already assumed that he was invading her private time to peep on her in the bath and cried out from within the bubbles, hiding herself at first from the trio who had wandered into her space.

“My apologies, m’lady - I didn’t realise this splendid bathroom was occupied!” Zak found himself adding flattery to his every word in his attempts to not offend the Jellicent as he turned to face any direction but towards where she was enjoying her soak. Andrew was much calmer, simply turning himself away from the situation with the slightest grin forming on his face at the predicament his trainer had wandered them all in to. This soon passed though with the Gardevoir taking a more offensive stance, sensing the jellyfish raising herself from the nearby water.

“We are currently looking for a friend of my companion - I don’t suppose you can help us?” Zak motioned in the direction of their Flabébé guide as he spoke, not knowing if the Floating Pokémon was even looking at him and his fellow trespassers but not daring to check either. He had a Frillish of his own and he knew that a powerful and potentially dangerous Pokémon lay just behind their pastel beauty.

Hugo couldn’t help but pity the Pansage. Clearly it had been through quite a bit already, and now it was being subject to anonymous targeting. It had apparently learned to mistrust humans, and why not? Had it been abandoned? Who had hurt this creature?

As Andrew alluded to, it certainly appeared that the monkeys were being used as a means to an end, the end being finding the King of the Forest. Hugo didn’t like the sound of that. Clearly whoever was behind this had no issue harassing innocent Grookey and Pansage; with that being the case, what could they possibly want with the King of the Forest? Poaching was an activity beneath disdain. Hugo was never one to tolerate cruelty toward Pokemon, and that wasn’t about to change now. He would get to the bottom of this.

“Something’s very wrong here,” he said to Andrew. “The King of the Forest…he’s a king for a reason, right? There must be something special about him. Something that poachers could almost certainly make a lot of money from, I’d imagine. Clearly they’re zeroing in on him, and it doesn’t appear that they really care who they hurt along the way. Okay then, fine. Let them pick on someone their own size.”

He turned to the Pansage.

“Little fella, I’m not going to hurt you. And I’m going to try to stop whoever is trying to hurt you and your friends. But I don’t know these parts. Andrew over here, he’s a big monkey guy. We both want to be your friend, but we need you to show us the way forward.

Can you help us?”

Seeing the Falink high in the middle, you wonder what sort of trial you'll face here.

The brief moment of relief Sweeney felt upon securing another Falinks was soon dashed mercilessly. Heading into the next trial chamber, the Bartender has a mock breakdown, slamming his gloved hands against his helmet in an admittedly exaggerated display. It just had to be chess.

Sweeney had never liked the game. It held particularly distasteful memories for him, forced to spend hours of his childhood deliberating over a board across from a grandfather who not once considered nor felt the need to hold his punches. The worst of it was the old man wasn't even necessarily cruel - he just had a borderline destructive competitive streak, an innate burning drive to never concede defeat, even to a child. With one final, despondent stare at the ceiling, Sweeney considers the board.

Two of the missing pieces were easily filled in his mind. The Queen was invaluable, indisputably the strongest piece on the board. Having anybody but the most level headed act in that capacity was a death sentence - so Sophie it would be. Marco was too egotistical to act as a Pawn, and would feel his pride encroached on were he to share his status, so as much as it pained he would need to take the Knight spot. It felt cruel to separate Izzy and Dizzy; hopefully the seriousness of the situation would allow the former to exert a little more control than normal on the latter. Which would leave Athena and Leonardo as the Pawns. That might be a little hard to sell, but appealing to their protective natures should convince them that standing on the frontlines is a sacrificial service worthy of their standing.

With his decision made, Sweeney relays his orders through Sophie, the room bathed in crimson light as the selected squadron appear to take their places.

The Pansage watches you with wide eyes as you ask for help. It wasn't use to actually being relied on, and it showed. Once you finished asking it for help, it instantly let out a happy chirp. It signaled for you to follow it, and both you and Andrew head deeper into the forest.

At this point, the light was beginning to fade. You certainly weren't in the Grotto anymore, as you could feel the power leaving from the forest. This was a different kind of feeling. A sort of choking feeling, as if you were diving straight into the unknown. The fading of the light certainly didn't help ease yourself, but the Pansage kept pushing forwards.

"Wait," Andrew calmly stated, causing both you and the Pansage to stop.

Looking back at him, he seemed a little bit on the uneasy side. Was he not use to actually being here? You knew he had a map, so he was at least somewhat familiar with the area. So was there another reason he basically had you guys stop?

"I need to pee real quick," He stated, trying to hold back his more eccentric nature as he headed into the woods.

You just kind of stand there. That was it? He just needed to pee? Though, looking ahead of you you could sort of telling why. You were at the point where there was almost no light ahead. THe Pansage looked at you, seeming raring and ready to go. It seems to be taking you straight to the heart of the navel. Were the poachers really going this far?

Hearing a rustling of the leaves, you could see Andrew return, looking a lot more relieved. Just how long had he held it in? Actually, that was a question you probably didn't want to ask. He began to rummage through his bag, and pulled out what seemed to be oil lanterns? He hands you one, unlit.

"So, uh, we're gonna needs these lit for sure. If I'm right, uh..." he spaced out before pulling his map out. All the seriousness he had was gone. Was it just a ploy to hide him having to go? This was really no time to ponder as you hear him speak up again

"We're about here." He pointed at a spot on the map. "This is the entrance into the navel, and well if we aren't careful we can fall and die! Or even worse!" He laughed a little, but you could tell he was very much on edge. "Just, uh, turn the knob on the side when you're ready to go."

What as lurking in that deep darkness? You didn't really know, but if that's where you needed to head to save the Grookey, so be it. It seems both Andrew and the Pansage were waiting on your decision.

What do you do?

Connor-

With your team set, your Solosis relays orders as they begin to fill out the board. Of course, that really wasn't all that helpful since you hadn't given them any orders of where to move. You were on the white side, and well, they do go first. With the failing, the three pawns before you come to life, being replaced by Baltoy.

The Baltoy all move one space forward, breaking the standard rules of chess. If this was a puzzle, then you needed to figure out how to exactly proceed. For everyone wrong step, the board would warp in a way that would harm your chances of winning. There was a solution here that you needed to figure out, but you needed to make sure you were actually following the rules of the trial.

Each Baltoy looked poised to attack. Of course, they were weak to your Pawns. You had a full board, and the opposing side didn't. Though, that wasn't necessarily an advantage here. With how everything was set up, and your base knowledge, you could see that even one small mistake would lead you to go into checkmate. It was a perfect trap, and you needed to play to the best of your ability or you wouldn't be able to move forwards.

The Falinks goes from behind you and whispers something to Sophie. The Solosis looks at you and relays a few potential plays you could do. The one that seemed to most likely get you out of the situation was to sacrifice one of your pawns. The question was, do you sacrifice one of the ones that were already there or one of your teammates?

What do you do?

What do you do?
Being the paranoid person that he was, Hugo had to take pause at Andrew’s sudden bizarre behavior. Bizarre even for him, that is. He seemed to be going back and forth between calm serenity and a bit of manic, frenzied uneasiness.

And suddenly, he had to pee. I mean, okay, we all have to pee sometimes. That was a fact. Nothing abnormal about that. The timing, though, seemed a bit suspicious. Andrew had trounced off into the jungle, alone, for an extended period of time. In hindsight, Hugo knew he should have followed him and said he had to go himself. Just to keep an eye out. After all, he barely knew Andrew. Or Flora, or any of those people for that matter. On the surface they seemed to do good work, and perhaps they really were good people after all and Hugo was just in his own head. Then again, he had always believed that no person was all of anything; not all bad, and not all good. Was it possible Andrew – and maybe others – are actually a bit more nefarious than they may seem and this is an inside job?

Unfortunately, Hugo lacked hard evidence at this point. All he had was his suspicions, and it wouldn’t be the first time those were totally off base. If he turned out to be wrong and falsely accused Andrew of wrongdoing, it could completely derail the mission and leave the Grookey and the Pansage vulnerable to whatever was coming after them. Hugo would have to play along, to some extent, until he was able to draw more definitive conclusions.

“Had to pee, huh? Well, nature calls, right? Who amongst us can afford not to answer?” he said to Andrew

He turned to the darkness. There was no way he’d be able to see through that on his own. Though now he was even suspicious of this oil lantern Andrew was offering. Was he setting himself up to be a target? Was whatever was lurking in the darkness waiting for Hugo to shine the light and leap out from the abyss to trap him? Was it some sort of secret tracking device? He didn’t know, but he had to play along.

But that didn’t mean he couldn’t do it without backup.

“Alright, flip the knob, shine the light. Seems easy enough. Let’s head out, but before we go, we might need some assistance.”

He pulled a Pokeball from his waist and released a hulking winged menace. It was Crobat. The beast flapped her four powerful wings in sequence, allowing her to seemingly hover in slow motion.

“Being part of the guild, you must certainly know about Crobat and its adeptness at flying in the dark and use of echolocation. Perhaps if she tagged along, she could help us avoid, you know like, falling to our deaths. Let’s get going.”

When he believed Andrew was out of earshot, he turned to his massive bat. “Watch my six and keep an eye on him. If things go south, spare the monkey, but otherwise no mercy.”

And off to the forest they went…

Distrusting of Andrew's sudden need to pee, you send out your Crobat and let her know to keep a watchful eye on him. This could be your paranoia kicking in, but at the same time, you could feel that you were overthinking this. After all, nature calls at the most inconvenient time. But, you could never be too careful, especially with the descent into the darkness of the navel you were about to do.

Heading down, your lamp could barely make out the outline of the Pansage. The fitting here was incredibly unstable, and you could feel the debris of dead leaves under your feet. It was mushy and crunchy in all the wrong ways. Andrew carefully paced behind you, taking each step one at a time. Your Crobat flew above you, being alert in case anything was coming at you guys.

And then you hear a sort of ringing in your ears. Everyone stopped on the fragile path and looked around. What was that? You could see the Pansage starting to get irritated again before Andrew let out a small chirping noise. This managed to calm down the grass monkey before it went into a rampage, but the noise persisted.

Looking around, you could see faint lights underneath you. From the look of it, it was a sort of hole, but it was almost hard to make out. Your Crobat swiftly dives down, her four wings making her descent silent. She soon flies back, worry on her face. You could tell she found something nasty down there.

"That's the entrance into the navel proper," Andrew states, his voice filled with unease. You could tell at this point the path was a downwards spiral, and whatever was at the end of it would not make a pleasant landing if you fell.

"At this point, well, the map won't really help us. It's almost impossible to properly navigate without a guide, or well, echolocation," Andrew states as he raises his lantern. He looks at your Crobat, both with awe and unease.

"I don't know what we'll find down there, but we need to try and not rush..." you hear the worry in his voice. It sounds like he had experience going down here before. Though, for what purpose? The weird chatter bug was certainly full of mysteries. But, for now, you had a more immediate problem.

What do you do?

Hugo hadn’t really been much afraid of what was going on until Crobat had done her reconnaissance. The Flying type was big and fierce and could take on most foes, so to see her showing a look of distress gave Hugo pause. Something bad was down there, he knew, but they had come this far. Turning back now wouldn’t do anyone any good.

And he was still suspicious of Andrew. As their trek continued, Hugo got the impression that the young lad knew more than he was letting on about this place and the mysterious events that had brought them here. Even so, he did seem genuinely uneasy, so either he was a good actor or they were approaching some sort of real peril.

“Well, then I guess we’re in luck,” Hugo announced, barely able to see several feet in front of him while the buzzing in his ears began to reach a bit of a fevered pitch. “I guess we will need to follow the path very slowly and very carefully. Crobat, we are going to need you lead the way, but do not get a head of us. We need you to be with us each step of the way, and keep us safely on the path. Use your Supersonic and try to identify any hazards for us. Can you do that?”

The giant bat fluttered her powerful, silent wings; her expression remained the same, but somehow Hugo could tell she was signaling her agreement.

“You,” he said to the Pansage, “you’ve got the natural equipment for scaling walls and climbing trees, but the two us aren’t so fortunate. So try and stay close by, okay?”

“Alright, well, I guess that settles that then.” He swallowed hard and gazed down toward the bottom of the pit which was mysteriously illuminated.

“Guess we should get moving…”

Your Crobat nods and tries to use her supersonic abilities to try to keep you all safe, but she seems to find nothing as your group goes down the spiral. There, the path gets slimmer and slimmer as you head towards the bottom, seeming to be a way to filter out the Pokemon that go up and down this path to things that shouldn't be here. The Pansage stops every so often, and you could tell why. There was some sort of metal debris lining the path as you headed down. There was definitely something suspicious going on here.

Your little group eventually reaches the end of the spiral, and Andrew turns off his lantern for now. While your paranoia was going at a thousand miles on hour at the move, you soon could see why. There was a group of the poachers that you encountered earlier, a campfire in the middle of the clearing. There was a sort of large device they were using. One of them pressed a button on it, and the loud ringing returns. Were they using a sonic device to try and map out the navel? For what purpose?

Before you could even react, Andrew reached over you and grabbed your lantern to turn it off. You couldn't even react to his nimbleness as the device was turned off. It was totally dark where you were now, as your little group was huddled at the end of the path.

"Those are those people that hurt the Grookey, right?" you could hear anger and disgust in his voice. If he was lying, well, he was doing it every damn well at this point. "We can't rush, no rushing would be bad. We need a plan, to well, distract them in order to slip through. We- we can't fight all of them at once..."

Besides the campfire and the device, you notice a few torches surrounding some of the equipment they were using. The strange thing was that they had no poached Pokemon with them. Was that stray Grookey so important? But it wouldn't make sense for them to go after just one starter Pokemon. Especially if it came down here.

"Hey boss, mapping is almost complete. We'll be able to find the target soon. Yeah, didn't think we'd find one of those rare butes in a group of Grookey. Right, well, we'll keep you updated located Target Z," you hear a loud voice coming from the group of poachers. It was a larger, muscled man who seemed to be no-nonsense. The rest of the group went up to him at times to whisper things. Then the sonic device stopped.

"And analysis complete. We've located it. I'm sending the coordinates to you now. You would've thought we'd find a Zar-"

Before the man could finish speaking, you could hear a small gasp of surprise come from Andrew. While you couldn't see him anymore, you could hear something snap from behind you, and could see the rough outline of him sitting on his ass. Did he fall over from shock? Well, the noise was loud enough to alert the poachers.

"Wait, who's there!?" the head poachers yells as he grabs a torch. You need a plan, now.

What do you do?

”What’s wrong? Andrew? Are you there? Are you okay?”

Hugo tried to check on his guide, but the darkness made that nearly impossible. He couldn’t see Andrew, but based on his reaction to the chatter between the poachers, Hugo had to assume that whatever they were talking about hit close to home for Andrew.

But there was only a limited amount of time to check on Andrew. His emotional response seemingly alerted the poachers to their presence. So much for being able to develop a plan. Now Hugo knew he and his crew would need to act quickly, and they would not be able to think this through as thoroughly as he would have preferred…and as much as they should have, really.

“We need to get away from them,” Hugo said aloud. The darkness provided some coverage, but they had a fire and lanterns and that would only help so much. He turned to Crobat, and also called forth Mr. Mime again.

“I need you both to obscure us. Crobat, set a Haze. Mr. Mime, use Misty Terrain. Hopefully that will provide some more coverage. Crobat, being the Infiltrator that you are, I need you to lead us through the clouds and the darkness past these guys. If any of them get to close, smack them with Aerial Ace.”

Hugo turned to Andrew, or where he thought Andrew was. And Pansage too. “Look, whatever it is that they said, I know it’s upset you, but we need to keep moving. We can’t take on all of them at once. Maybe we can try and isolate them a few at a time, but at this point, we can’t stop. Let’s keep moving. Hopefully we’ll find what you’re looking for.”

Sweeney was a little taken aback. He hadn't expected the trial to begin quite so abruptly, but in hindsight the state of play should've been painfully obvious to him. Cursing himself for his short-sightedness, the trainer looks over the board. It shouldn't be terribly difficult considering his numerical advantage, but it would likely require being somewhat aggressive. The fact three pieces moved on the opposing side nagged at the back of his mind though. It seemed to be some sort of reprimand for his inaction, but it still struck him as odd. Sophie makes the recommendation of sacrificing a piece - and to an extent, Sweeney agrees. However, there was something else he wanted to test. If it blew up in their face, he couldn't have one of his Pokemon take the fall so blatantly.

Sophie is less convinced by the idea. The Solosis narrows her eyes, scolding Sweeney for a moment before sighing heavily. Once a thought got into her trainers head, it was hard to shake, no matter what was done. With a roll of her eyes, the Psychic type begins to manipulate the pieces with her telekinetic powers. Selecting three pawns, she mimics the movements made by the Baltoy, positioning pawns in front of each - and relaying an order to Athena. Inevitably, at least one of the pawns would be toppled - potentially all - and in that brief period the Pawniard was to unleash a Snarl, hopefully striking the trio of Baltoy. They could probably weather a punishment at this point, and the potential benefit was huge. If Sweeney could avoid playing by the strict rules - whatever they may be - he would seize that opportunity with both hands.
