3DS in 2020
Hi!
Is it still valid to buy 3DS nowadays? I have no money for Nintendo Switch but there came a chance to get 3DS cheap. Basically my older cousin wants to part with it for a great price. No games added but it is okay. So how is Pokemon Sun / Moon? Does it hold up now? I am already super excited but I wanted to learn what you guys think. Yay or nay? Also if you say 'yay' should I buy Pokemon Sun or Pokemon Moon? |

Pokémon Sun and Moon aren't the most universally beloved Pokémon games out there, but they have a good story, and I'd say they hold up pretty well. The enhanced versions, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, do boast a number of improvements that shouldn't be overlooked, though as far as the overall story goes, Sun and Moon did it better.
As for the 3DS overall, it honestly depends on what you're looking for. There's a wide library of games- in addition to the 3DS games, of course, there's also anything released for the DS and DSi. There's a lot of games that can be downloaded off the eShop, both for the 3DS specifically and from older systems as well. The Streetpass Mii Plaza games that come with the system are cool as well, and you can pay to download even more games for that, which can be fun if you intend to carry around the 3DS with you (though I don't know how much use Streetpass actually sees in this day and age, though you can always accumulate Play Coins and use those instead). There's even an MP3 player built in that I personally use to listen to music. There's a camera, which, while not the best camera out there, is still perfectly serviceable and offers some fun photo editing capabilties. If any of what I just said sounds good to you, then I'd say a 3DS is worth your while. I still get plenty of use out of mine (well, mine's a New 2DS XL, specifically- probably your best bet in terms of cost, btw- it doesn't have the 3D capabilities, but speaking from experience, the novelty of that wears off eventually anyway), in spite of the fact that I also have a Switch. |

3DS isn't even technically EOL, and tech wise it's not as creeped as the Switch which is running on 2015 tablet hardware.

Its worth it. Most of the games on there won't ever be ported. An if ya somehow missed on the DS an its library, well the 3DS is BC with those games so you'll be in for loads of fun. Dualscreen/touchscreen gaming dies with the 3DS. An while emulation is a thing the experience will be drastically different compared to the real deal, even moreso than usual emulated systems.

It's weird because touch screen gaming isn't dead, the Switch does have a touch screen its just no one really ever uses it anymore, presumably because they don't feel they have to.

NOA's prolly not helping in that regard. Brain Age Switch still hasn't been released in north america last I checked an that game came with/sold alongside a stylus meant for Switch use. Other than that yeah touchscreen gaming definitely lives on alongside mobile gaming. Its not quite the same as stylus touchscreen gaming, though I imagine either type would feel not quite right via emu's.
